Synthesis and Surface Properties of Amphiphilic Star-Shaped and Dendrimer-like Copolymers Based on Polystyrene Core and Poly(ethylene oxide) Corona

Dendrimer as a momentous tool in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

Dendrimers have been comprehensively used for cargo delivery, nucleic acid delivery (genes, miRNA/siRNAs), delivery of macromolecules, and other various biomedical applications. Dendrimers are highly versatile in function and can be engineered as multifunctional biomacromolecules by modifying the surface for fulfilling different applications. Dendrimers are being used for crosslinking of existing synthetic and natural polymeric scaffolds to regulate their binding efficiency, stiffness, biocompatibility, transfection, and many other properties to mimic the in vivo extracellular matrix in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM). Dendritic inter-cellular linkers can enhance the linkages between cells and result in scaffold-independent tissue constructs. Effectively engineered dendrimers are the ideal molecules for delivering bioactive molecules such as cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, etc., and other metabolites for efficaciously regulating cell behavior. Dendrimeric nanostructures have shown tremendous results in various TERM fields like stem cells survival, osteogenesis, increased crosslinking for eye and corneal repair, and proliferation in cartilage. This review highlights the role and various aspects of dendritic polymers for TERM in general and with respect to specific tissues. This review also covers novel explorations and insights into the use of dendrimers in TERM, focusing on the developments in the past decade and perspective of the future.

Phase Behaviors of Giant Surfactants with Different Numbers of Fluorinated Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane "Heads" and One Poly(ethylene oxide) "Tail" at the Air-Water Interface

Giant surfactants with different numbers of aryl-trifluorovinyl ether-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (FVPOSS) heads and one poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) tail, (FVPOSS)_n-PEO₂₂₇, are precisely synthesized. The phase behaviors of (FVPOSS)_n-PEO₂₂₇ at the air-water interface were investigated through surface pressure measurements (isotherm and hysteresis experiments) and the Brewster angle microscopy. Upon increasing the number of FVPOSS heads, the interfacial behaviors of these giant surfactants greatly change. More phase transitions occur during the compression as the number of FVPOSS heads increased from one to two and three. The evolution of morphologies of Langmuir films and compression-expansion hysteresis curves further illustrate phase transitions at the air-water interface. Furthermore, molecular mechanisms to describe phase transitions of (FVPOSS)_n-PEO₂₂₇ at the interface are put forward. This study deepens the understanding of interfacial phase behaviors of special giant surfactants and provides knowledge of nanostructure design and construction at the interface.

Unimolecular Micelles from Layered Amphiphilic Dendrimer-Like Block Copolymers

In this report, we synthesized layered amphiphilic dendrimer-like block copolymers containing a polystyrene core and poly(p-tert-butoxystyrene)/poly(p-hydroxylstyrene) shell (coded G4-PtBOS/G4-PHOS). The synthetic method is easy involving anionic polymerization, epoxidation, ring-opening reaction and hydrolysis reaction. The hydrolyzed G4-PtBOS was soluble in alkaline water and behaved as unimolecular micelle, as demonstrated by the results of DLS, cryo- and normal TEM, and pyrene entrapping experiment. The stability of the unimolecular micelles was investigated via ζ-potential measurements.

Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Triblock Terpolymers with Complex Macromolecular Architecture

Two star triblock terpolymers (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO)₃ and one dendritic-like terpolymer [PS-b-P2VP-b-(PEO)₂]₃ of PS (polystyrene), P2VP (poly(2-vinylpyridine)), and PEO (poly(ethylene oxide)), never reported before, were synthesized by combining atom transfer radical and anionic polymerizations. The synthesis involves the transformation of the -Br groups of the previously reported Br-terminated 3-arm star diblock copolymers to one or two -OH groups, followed by anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide to afford the star or dendritic structure, respectively. The well-defined structure of the terpolymers was confirmed by static light scattering, size exclusion chromatography, and NMR spectroscopy. The self-assembly in solution and the morphology in bulk of the terpolymers, studied by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, respectively, reveal new insights in the phase separation of these materials with complex macromolecular architecture.

Synthesis and characterization of novel dumbbell shaped copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)x-b-polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)x with tunable side arms by combination of efficient thiol-ene addition reaction with living polymerization mechanism

A series of well-defined dumbbell shaped copolymers consisting of PEO and PS segments were successfully synthesized by LAP and ROP mechanisms and the efficient thiol-ene addition reaction. This versatile synthetic route might be used to synthesize other similar copolymers.

Synthesis, characterization, micellization and application of novel multiblock copolymers with the same compositions but different linkages

Several novel multiblock copolymers, (PEO-b-PS-b-PEO-Diyne)_s, [PEO-b-PS-b-PEO-(OH)₄]_s and (PEO-b-PS-b-PEO-Acetal)_s, with the same compositions but different linkages were constructed, and their micellization and application were studied.
