Synthesis of Near-Monodisperse Acidic Homopolymers and Block Copolymers from Hydroxylated Methacrylic Copolymers Using Succinic Anhydride under Mild Conditions

Biodegradable, Strong, and Hydrophobic Regenerated Cellulose Films Enriched with Esterified Lignin Nanoparticles

The scientific community is pursuing significant efforts worldwide to develop environmentally viable film materials from biomass, particularly transparent, high-performance regenerated cellulose (RC) films, to replace traditional plastics. However, the inferior mechanical performance and hydrophilic nature of RC films are generally not suitable for use as a substitute for plastics in practical applications. Herein, lignin homogenization is used to synthesize high-performance composite films. The esterified lignin nanoparticles (ELNPs) with dispersible and binding advantages are prepared through esterification and nanometrization. In the presence of ELNPs, RC films exhibit a higher tensile strength (110.4 MPa), hydrophobic nature (103.6° water contact angle, 36.6% water absorption at 120 min, and 1.127 × 10-12 g cm cm-2 s-1 Pa-1 water vapor permeability), and exciting optical properties (high visible and low ultraviolet transmittance). The films further display antioxidant activity, oxygen barrier ability, and thermostability. The films completely biodegrade at 12 and 30% soil moisture. Overall, this study offers new insights into lignin valorization and regenerated cellulose composite films as novel bioplastic materials.

pH-Responsive Nanogels Generated by Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly of a Succinate-Functional Monomer

Colloidal nanogels formed from a pH-responsive poly(succinate)-functional core and a poly(sulfonate)-functional corona were prepared via a previously unreported reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT)-mediated aqueous emulsion polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) route. Specifically, a poly(potassium 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PKSPMA50) macromolecular chain-transfer agent (macro-CTA) was synthesized via RAFT solution polymerization followed by chain-extension with a hydrophobic, carboxylic acid-functional, 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl succinate (MES) monomer at pH 2. Colloidal nanoparticles with tunable diameters between 66 to 150 nm, depending on the core composition, and narrow particle size distributions were obtained at 20% w/w solids. Well-defined pH-responsive nanogels that swell on increasing the pH could be prepared even without the addition of a cross-linking comonomer, and introducing an additional cross-linker to the core led to smaller nanogels with lower swelling ratios. These nanogels could reversibly change in size on cycling the pH between acidic and basic conditions and remain colloidally stable over a wide pH range and at 70 °C.

Spontaneous, One-Pot Assembly of pH-Responsive Hydrogen-Bonded Polymer Capsules

We demonstrate a facile, one-pot spontaneous assembly of hydrogen-bonded polymer containers of controllable size in aqueous solution. Electron microscopy shows that capsule formation is nucleated by a pH-induced phase separation of an amphiphilic poly(carboxylic acid), followed by binding and in-growth of polymer complexes within the phase separated droplets. The simple selection of different molecular weights of a stabilizing polymer affords a wide array of capsule sizes, including those in a submicron range, which are difficult to prepare using the alternative layer-by-layer technique. The capsules can spontaneously coat silica particles, and be reversibly removed by varying pH. Furthermore, the capsule walls can be photo-cross-linked to preserve their integrity over the entire pH scale, resulting in pH-triggered "breathing" containers or responsive coatings on silica particles useful for encapsulation and controlled release.

Synthesis and characterization of novel polyacid-stabilized latexes

A series of novel polyacid macromonomers based on 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via a two-step route. First, a range of well-defined PHPMA homopolymer precursors were synthesized by ATRP using a tertiary amine-functionalized initiator, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl-2-bromoisobutyrylamide, and a CuCl/2, 2'-bipyridine (bpy) catalyst in alcoholic media at 50 °C. ATRP polymerizations were relatively slow and poorly controlled in pure isopropanol (IPA), especially when targeting higher degrees of polymerization (DP > 30). Improved control was achieved by addition of water: low polydispersity (M(w)/M(n) < 1.25) PHPMA homopolymers of DP = 30, 40, 50, 60, or 70 were successfully prepared using a 9:1 w/w % IPA/water mixture at 50 °C. These PHPMA homopolymer precursors were then derivatized to produce the corresponding poly(2-(succinyloxy)propyl methacrylate) (PSPMA) macromonomers by quaternizing the tertiary amine end-group with excess 4-vinylbenzyl chloride, followed by esterification of the pendent hydroxyl groups using excess succinic anhydride at 20 °C. These polyacid macromonomers were evaluated as reactive steric stabilizers for polystyrene latex synthesis under either aqueous emulsion polymerization or alcoholic dispersion polymerization conditions. Near-monodisperse polystyrene latexes were obtained via aqueous emulsion polymerization using 10 wt % PSPMA macromonomer (with respect to styrene monomer) with various initiators as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy, disk centrifuge photosedimentometry and light scattering studies. PSPMA macromomer concentrations as low as 1.0 wt % also produced near-monodisperse latexes, suggesting that these PSPMA macromonomers are highly effective stabilizers. Alcoholic dispersion polymerization of styrene conducted in various ethanol/water mixtures with 10 wt % PSPMA(50) macromonomer produced relatively large near-monodisperse latexes. Increasing the water content in such formulations led to smaller latexes, as expected. Control experiments conducted with 10 wt % PSPMA(50) homopolymer produced relatively large polydisperse latexes via emulsion polymerization and only macroscopic precipitates via alcoholic dispersion polymerization. Thus the terminal styrene group on the macromonomer chains is essential for the formation of well-defined latexes. FT-IR spectroscopy indicated that these latexes contained PSPMA macromonomer, whereas (1)H NMR spectroscopy studies of dissolved latexes allowed stabilizer contents to be determined. Aqueous electrophoresis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirmed that the PSPMA macromonomer chains were located at the latex surface, as expected. Finally, these polyacid-stabilized polystyrene latexes exhibited excellent freeze-thaw stability and remained colloidally stable in the presence of electrolyte.

Functionalization of monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles

We report a new strategy for the preparation of monodisperse, water-soluble magnetic nanoparticles. Oleic acid-stabilized magnetic nanocrystals were prepared by the organic synthesis route proposed by Sun et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2004, 126, 273.), with size control obtained via seeded-mediated growth. The oleic groups initially present on the nanoparticle surfaces were replaced via ligand exchange reactions with various capping agents bearing reactive hydroxyl moieties. These hydroxyl groups were (i) exploited to initiate ring opening polymerization (ROP) of polylactic acid from the nanoparticle surfaces and (ii) esterified by acylation to permit the addition of alkyl halide moieties to transform the nanoparticle surfaces into macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). By appropriate selection of the ligand properties, the nanoparticle surfaces can be polymerized in various solvents, providing an opportunity for the growth of a wide variety of water-soluble polymers and polylectrolyte brushes (both cationic and anionic) from the nanoparticle surfaces. The nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), electron microscopy, and light scattering. Light scattering measurements indicate that the nanoparticles are mostly present as individual nonclustered units in water. With pH-responsive polymers grown on the nanoparticle surfaces, reversible aggregation of nanoparticles could be induced by suitable swings in the pH between the stable and unstable regions.
