Layer-by-Layer Poly(phenylene ethynylene) Films on Silica Microspheres for Enhanced Sensory Amplification

Self-assembled organic and hybrid materials derived from oligo-(p-phenyleneethynylenes)

Oligo-(p-Phenyleneethynylenes) (OPEs) have garnered widespread interest over the past three decades due to their excellent opto-electronic properties. However, the chief focus has been on the use of mainly small molecules or polymeric systems for the study of their structural diversity in opto-electronic applications. Recently, researchers have started delving deeper into their utility in material applications. Purely organic materials such as supramolecular polymers, self-assembled nanostructures, nanostructured organogels and single-crystalline materials derived from OPEs have already been developed and researched. Chirality has also been introduced into these systems. Additionally, these have shown physical properties such as polymorphism, liquid crystallinity, melt formation, mechanochromism, etc. All these materials have also shown excellent luminescence properties with high quantum yield and some have even shown energy harvesting properties. There have also been sporadic reports on OPE linker based hybrid systems such as metallogels and metal-organic framework (MOF) structures where structural analysis reveals the origin of tunable emission in these materials. Furthermore, by innovative structural design, unexplored properties of OPEs such as water repellency, bioimaging, drug delivery, photocatalysis, energy transfer, nanomorphology control, photoconductivity, and colour tunability could be achieved. This feature article will, therefore, encompass a detailed discussion on the development of this field as well as the analysis of the properties realized in OPE derived self-assembled supramolecular materials. The main focus will be on the following classes of materials: soft supramolecular materials, crystalline supramolecular π-systems, nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) and bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and how their application horizon has been expanded by integrating OPEs into their structures.

Controlled Phase Separation in Poly( p-phenyleneethynylene) Thin Films and Its Relationship to Vapor-Sensing Properties

In this paper, we report the synthesis and mesoporous film formation of hydrophobic rodlike poly( p-phenyleneethynylene)s (PPEs) and present porosity-dependent quenching studies using 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene (TNT) vapors. Nonsolvent vapor-induced phase separation was used to induce pore formation during film casting, and the concentration of PPEs in the casting solution was controlled carefully to prevent excimer formation. We found that the structures of the sidechains of the PPEs strongly influence the range of relative humidity at which controlled pore generation occurs, which could be rationalized from interfacial energies calculated from contact angle measurements. Porosity of the PPE films resulted in increased efficiency of fluorescence quenching toward TNT vapors, which previously required very thin films (below 5 nm) for sensing applications. The control of the porous structure as well as film thickness constitutes a promising strategy for enhancing the efficiency of chemosensors and in more general applications requiring fine-tuned polymer-gas interactions.

Interaction of anionic phenylene ethynylene polymers with lipids: from membrane embedding to liposome fusion

Here we report spectroscopic studies on the interaction of negatively charged, amphiphilic polyphenylene ethynylene (PPE) polymers with liposomes prepared either from negative, positive or zwitterionic lipids. Emission spectra of PPEs of 7 and 49 average repeat units bearing carboxylate terminated side chains showed that the polymer embeds within positively charged lipids where it exists as free chains. No interaction was observed between PPEs and negatively charged lipids. Here the polymer remained aggregated giving rise to broad emission spectra characteristic of the aggregate species. In zwitterionic lipids, we observed that the majority of the polymer remained aggregated yet a small fraction readily embedded within the membrane. Titration experiments revealed that saturation of zwitterionic lipids with polymer typically occurred at a polymer repeat unit to lipid mole ratio close to 0.05. No further membrane embedding was observed above that point. For liposomes prepared from positively charged lipids, saturation was observed at a PPE repeat unit to lipid mole ratio of ∼0.1 and liposome precipitation was observed above this point. FRET studies showed that precipitation was preceded by lipid mixing and liposome fusion induced by the PPEs. This behavior was prominent for the longer polymer and negligible for the shorter polymer at a repeat unit to lipid mole ratio of 0.05. We postulate that fusion is the consequence of membrane destabilization whereby the longer polymer gives rise to more extensive membrane deformation than the shorter polymer.

Organic semiconductors for device applications: current trends and future prospects

With the rich experience of developing silicon devices over a period of the last six decades, it is easy to assess the suitability of a new material for device applications by examining charge carrier injection, transport, and extraction across a practically realizable architecture; surface passivation; and packaging and reliability issues besides the feasibility of preparing mechanically robust wafer/substrate of single-crystal or polycrystalline/amorphous thin films. For material preparation, parameters such as purification of constituent materials, crystal growth, and thin-film deposition with minimum defects/disorders are equally important. Further, it is relevant to know whether conventional semiconductor processes, already known, would be useable directly or would require completely new technologies. Having found a likely candidate after such a screening, it would be necessary to identify a specific area of application against an existing list of materials available with special reference to cost reduction considerations in large-scale production. Various families of organic semiconductors are reviewed here, especially with the objective of using them in niche areas of large-area electronic displays, flexible organic electronics, and organic photovoltaic solar cells. While doing so, it appears feasible to improve mobility and stability by adjusting π-conjugation and modifying the energy band-gap. Higher conductivity nanocomposites, formed by blending with chemically conjugated C-allotropes and metal nanoparticles, open exciting methods of designing flexible contact/interconnects for organic and flexible electronics as can be seen from the discussion included here.

Conjugated amplifying polymers for optical sensing applications

Thanks to their unique optical and electrochemical properties, conjugated polymers have attracted considerable attention over the last two decades and resulted in numerous technological innovations. In particular, their implementation in sensing schemes and devices was widely investigated and produced a multitude of sensory systems and transduction mechanisms. Conjugated polymers possess numerous attractive features that make them particularly suitable for a broad variety of sensing tasks. They display sensory signal amplification (compared to their small-molecule counterparts) and their structures can easily be tailored to adjust solubility, absorption/emission wavelengths, energy offsets for excited state electron transfer, and/or for use in solution or in the solid state. This versatility has made conjugated polymers a fluorescence sensory platform of choice in the recent years. In this review, we highlight a variety of conjugated polymer-based sensory mechanisms together with selected examples from the recent literature.

Preparation of a pH-Sensitive Polystyrene Fluorescent Microsphere based on a Cyanine Dye

A novel pH-sensitive near-IR (NIR) fluorescent dye was synthesised and utilised in the preparation of fluorescent polystyrene microspheres. Their photochemical properties, as well as the pH-dependent optical properties were investigated and showed high sensitivity to changes of pH in the range of 3.3–8.1. The fluorescence became stronger with the increase in pH. Importantly, the microspheres were able to work in aqueous media, which is highly valuable for use in biological applications.

Sensitivity gains in chemosensing by optical and structural modulation of ordered assembly arrays of ZnO nanorods

Nanomaterials and -structures have attracted much attention owing to their applications to ultrasensitive nanodevices. In this work, ordered assembly arrays of ZnO nanorods have been hydrothermally fabricated and used as optical substrates of fluorescence sensors for toxic vapors. The unique fastigiate nanorod assembly combines merits of single fibers and clusters, possessing identical orientation, large surface-to-volume ratio, evanescent transmission, and evanescent coupling. As coated on the assembly arrays, different sensing materials all generated amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) action such that the fluorescence intensity of the narrowed spectrum was 52.4-fold enhanced. Results of sensing experiments indicate that sensors based on the assembly arrays displayed 100% elevated normalized quenching rate and several times longer full-load time compared with reference sensors. This work provides a facile method to fabricate secondary structures of 1D rigid material and presents a new way to design highly sensitive optic sensors. Furthermore, evanescent excitation caused ASE action of fluorescent organics, and the correlative sensitivity gain is of interest in both theoretical research and the applications field.

Deposition of anionic conjugated poly(phenylenevinylene) onto silica nanoparticles via electrostatic interactions — Assembly and single-particle spectroscopy

Fluorescent nanoparticles were prepared via adsorption of the conjugated polyelectrolyte poly[5-methoxy-2-(3-sulfopropoxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MPS-PPV) onto 50 and 100 nm aminosilane functionalized silica beads. The particles were investigated via ensemble and single-molecule or -particle spectroscopy techniques to quantify the effect of the silica bead core on the exciton migration efficiency within the polymer. Ensemble emission spectra and ensemble fluorescence quenching studies with methyl viologen are consistent with good exciton migration along the polymer in the polymer-coated bead. The silica nanobead scaffolding preserves the sensitivity of the free polymer and provides a controllable architecture that minimizes nonspecific interactions. Single-particle spectroscopy studies were conducted on particles immobilized onto the positively charged surface of glass cover slips. Particle immobilization enabled us to monitor the effect of oxygen scavenger solutions on individual particles by changing the surrounding solution. The intensity–time trajectories of individual beads provide a mechanism of signal transduction with potential applications in multiplexing studies. Hundreds of individual beads can be imaged in a rapid parallel fashion.

Surface immobilization of poly(ethyleneimine) and plasmid DNA on electrospun poly(L-lactic acid) fibrous mats using a layer-by-layer approach for gene delivery

The method of coating electrospun ultrafine poly(L-lactic acid) fibers with DNA, by building up polyelectrolyte layer(s) of poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) and plasmid DNA using an electrostatic layer-by-layer deposition method, for gene delivery is presented. The pGL3 encoding luciferase was applied as plasmid DNA. The quantity of pGL3 immobilized on individual fibers increased with increasing pGL3 concentration in the immersion solution (0.017-0.870 mg/mL) and increasing bilayer number of PEI/pGL3 (single-triple). With the exception of one specimen prepared under the condition 0.870 mg/mL pGL3 solution and double PEI/pGL3 layers, the transfection efficiency of COS-7 cells, defined by the ratio of fluorescence intensity (resulting from the presence of luciferase) with respect to the quantity of cellular protein on the fibrous mat increased with increasing quantity of pGL3 on the fibers. In addition to the ease of controlling the quality of polyelectrolyte bilayer(s) by simply changing the concentrations of substances and number of immersing cycles, the features of the electrospun fibrous mat such as a very large surface-to-volume ratio and flexibility, could potentially be employed as a strategy for gene therapy combined with tissue engineering technology.

Design of Cationic Conjugated Polyelectrolytes for DNA Concentration Determination

Cationic conjugated polyelectrolytes poly110 and poly120 were designed, synthesized, and characterized with the anticipation of function in the determination of double-stranded DNA concentration [dsDNA]. Their structures contain a pi-delocalized optically active backbone composed of phenylene-fluorene segments copolymerized with 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT) units and charged pendant groups that allow excellent solubility in water. The subscript in poly1x refers to the molar percent of BT units in the chain. Addition of dsDNA to poly110 or poly120 results in a change in the color of emission from blue to green. These spectral changes can be treated to obtain the parameter delta, which can be used to generate calibration curves that indicate [dsDNA]. Analysis of photoluminescence spectra reveals that dsDNA addition gives rise to more efficient FRET from blue emitting segments to the BT sites, an increase in the BT emission quantum yield, and partial quenching of the phenylene-fluorene segments. Studies were also carried out to maximize the range of [dsDNA] determination. We find that by combining the response from two different initial concentrations of poly110, it is possible to generate calibration curves that respond with a difference in [dsDNA] of over 7 orders of magnitude.

Conjugated polyelectrolyte-grafted silica microspheres

A direct method for preparation of conjugated polymer-grafted silica particles is reported. Silica particles (0.3 and 5 mum diameter) are treated with a 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylamine derivative that is functionalized with an aryl iodide unit. A solution step-growth polymerization reaction is performed in solution that contains a dispersion of the aryl iodide-functionalized particles. The reaction is a Pd(0)-catalyzed (Sonogashira) A-B-type polymerization of an oligo(ethylene glycol)-fuctionalized diiodobenzene and a bis(propyloxy)sulfonate-substituted diethynylbenzene. The overall process affords silica particles that feature a surface graft layer of an anionic poly(phenylene ethynylene)-type conjugated polyelectrolyte. The particle surface modification process was monitored by infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the polymer-grafted silica particles were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The conjugated polyelectrolyte-grafted silica particles are highly fluorescent, and a Stern-Volmer quenching study of the particles' fluorescence with electron-transfer- and energy-transfer-type quenchers shows that the quenching response depends on the type of quenching mechanism.

Quantification of amplified quenching for conjugated polymer microsphere systems

A series of nonaggregating carboxylate-functionalized poly(phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) have been synthesized for immobilization via electrostatic adsorption onto Eu3+-polystyrene microspheres with a mean diameter of 0.2 microm. This system is shown to constitute a ratiometric system that measures fluorescence quenching with high fidelity. The fluorescence quenching properties of the polymer-coated particles in response to methyl viologen and a naphthyl-functionalized viologen have been investigated in aqueous solutions to study the influence of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with pentiptycene-incorporated as well as macrocycle-containing polymers.
