Surface Structures, Particles, and Fibers of Shape-Memory Polymers at Micro-/Nanoscale

Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are one kind of smart polymers and can change their shapes in a predefined manner under stimuli. Shape-memory effect (SME) is not a unique ability for specific polymeric materials but results from the combination of a tailored shape-memory creation procedure (SMCP) and suitable molecular architecture that consists of netpoints and switching domains. In the last decade, the trend toward the exploration of SMPs to recover structures at micro-/nanoscale occurs with the development of SMPs. Here, the progress of the exploration in micro-/nanoscale structures, particles, and fibers of SMPs is reviewed. The preparation method, SMCP, characterization of SME, and applications of surface structures, free-standing particles, and fibers of SMPs at micro-/nanoscale are summarized.

Rapid ordering of block copolymer thin films

Block-copolymers self-assemble into diverse morphologies, where nanoscale order can be finely tuned via block architecture and processing conditions. However, the ultimate usage of these materials in real-world applications may be hampered by the extremely long thermal annealing times-hours or days-required to achieve good order. Here, we provide an overview of the fundamentals of block-copolymer self-assembly kinetics, and review the techniques that have been demonstrated to influence, and enhance, these ordering kinetics. We discuss the inherent tradeoffs between oven annealing, solvent annealing, microwave annealing, zone annealing, and other directed self-assembly methods; including an assessment of spatial and temporal characteristics. We also review both real-space and reciprocal-space analysis techniques for quantifying order in these systems.

Stereoengineering of poly(1,3-methylenecyclohexane) via two-state living coordination polymerization of 1,6-heptadiene

External control over the rate of dynamic methyl group exchange between configurationally stable active species and configurationally unstable dormant species with respect to chain-growth propagation within a highly stereoselective and regiospecific living coordination polymerization of 1,6-heptadiene has been used to generate a spectrum of different physical forms of poly(1,3-methylenecyclohexane) (PMCH) in which the stereochemical microstructure has been systematically varied between two limiting forms. The application of this strategy to manipulate the bulk properties of PMCH and the solid-state microphase behavior of well-defined PMCH-b-poly(1-hexene) block copolymers is further demonstrated.

In situ study of the breakout crystallization in the poly(butadiene)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) thin film

Despite its wide occurrence in soft confined block co-polymers, breakout crystallization remains poorly understood and is difficult to control. In this work, thin films of cylinder-forming poly(butadiene)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PB-b-PCL) diblock co-polymers, with PCL being the minority block, have been chosen as the study subject. We demonstrate a new route to study the breakout crystallization by obtaining the microphase separation structure within terraced lamellae first and then in situ tracking down the lamellar coalescence, resulting from the development of the crystal growth front. We find that the crystal growth front has sucked materials from the surrounding amorphous lamellae, which lead to the decrease of the lamellar zones and coalescence of the microphase separation structure. Dividing the breakout crystallization into parallel breakout and vertical breakout, we illustrate that it is the crystallization-driven molecular diffusion that make the molecules overcome the topography constraint and grow into large-scale spherulite. Moreover, the results show that the polymer microphase separation structure has a significant influence on the crystal nucleation and greatly retarded the crystal growth rate. With a well-designed microphase separation structure within terraces and an easily tunable atomic force microscopy in situ imaging technique, an intensive study of the breakout crystallization and concomitant microdomain coalescence has been offered.

Surface-induced breakout crystallization in cylinder-forming P(I-b-EO) diblock copolymer thin films

We have found very slow crystallization in thin films of cylinder-forming poly(isoprene-b-ethyleneoxide) (P(I-b -EO)) diblock copolymers with PEO being the minority block. The film was crystallized at room temperature after melting at 62 °C. Imaging methods were combined with X-ray reflectometry and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering and diffraction. Initially, hexagonally packed, amorphous PEO cylinders lie in the film plane. After 148 days, crystallized, finger-like terraces were observed over the entire film surface. The terrace height is 20% higher than the repeat distance in the as-prepared film. Thus, at the film surface, the cylinders have been destroyed by crystalline lamellae lying in the film plane. The PEO chain stems are perpendicular to the substrate surface and are once-folded and fully interdigitated. The substrate-near layers still consist of the hexagonally packed, amorphous PEO cylinders within the PI matrix.

Crystal growth transition from flat-on to edge-on induced by solvent evaporation in ultrathin films of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)

The transition of lamellar crystal orientation from flat-on to edge-on in ultrathin films of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) via solvent vapor (toluene) treatment was investigated. When the as-prepared film was treated in saturated solvent vapor, breakout crystals could form quickly, and then they transformed from square single crystals (flat-on lamellae) to dendrites and finally to nanowire crystals (edge-on lamellae). Initially, heterogeneous nucleation at the polymer/substrate interface dominated the structure evolution, leading to flat-on lamellar crystals orientation. And the transition from faceted habits to dendrites indicated a transition of underlying mechanism from nucleation-controlled to diffusion-limited growth. As the solvent molecules gradually diffused into the polymer/substrate interface, it will subsequently weaken the polymer-substrate interaction. In this case, lower free energy lamellae of an edge-on orientation could be obtained by the gain of free volume of the soluble PS block.

Carving Out Niches for Nanostructures: Implementation and Interplay of Building Blocks, Methods, and Tools

The number and diversity of techniques to create well-defined polymeric architectures has set the foundation to reinvent macromolecular chemistry’s tenor. This development offers the chance to build refined structures with multifaceted, cross-disciplinary applications. We discuss a few advances in the design and development of selected nanoobjects with far-reaching potential. Herein, well-defined building blocks and introduced methods to establish three-dimensional architectures will be presented. Sequential attachment strategies and tools taken from biological chemistries achieve new levels of specificity.
