Dynamic Confinement Effects in Polymer Blends. A Quasielastic Neutron Scattering Study of the Dynamics of Poly(ethylene oxide) in a Blend with Poly(vinyl acetate)

Microscopic versus Macroscopic Glass Transition(s) in Blends of Industrial Interest

We investigate by neutron scattering and calorimetry a mixture of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and a commercial resin. The neat materials present a large dynamic contrast, having SBR a much lower glass-transition temperature than the resin. The focus is to exploit neutron scattering selectivity in an isotopically labelled sample where deuterated SBR is the majority component. This direct insight into the resin atomic motions within the mixture allows determining the ‘microscopic’ glass transition of the resin in the presence of the a priori much more mobile SBR. This transition takes place in the vicinity of the initial calorimetric glass transition temperature, mainly dictated by the majority component.

Breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation in supercooled water: the jump-diffusion perspective

Although water is the most ubiquitous liquid it shows many thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies. Some of the anomalies further intensify in the supercooled regime. While many experimental and theoretical studies have focused on the thermodynamic anomalies of supercooled water, fewer studies explored the dynamical anomalies very extensively. This is due to the intricacy of the experimental measurement of the dynamical properties of supercooled water. Violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation (SER), an important relation connecting the diffusion of particles with the viscosity of the medium, is one of the major dynamical anomalies. In absence of experimentally measured viscosity, researchers used to check the validity of SER indirectly using average translational relaxation time or α-relaxation time. Very recently, the viscosity of supercooled water was accurately measured at a wide range of temperatures and pressures. This allowed direct verification of the SER at different temperature-pressure thermodynamic state points. An increasing breakdown of the SER was observed with decreasing temperature. Increasing pressure reduces the extent of breakdown. Although some well-known theories explained the above breakdown, a detailed molecular mechanism was still elusive. Recently, a translational jump-diffusion (TJD) approach has been able to quantitatively explain the breakdown of the SER in pure supercooled water and an aqueous solution of methanol. The objective of this article is to present a detailed and state-of-the-art analysis of the past and present works on the breakdown of SER in supercooled water with a specific focus on the new TJD approach for explaining the breakdown of the SER.

Study of the Segmental Dynamics and Ion Transport of Solid Polymer Electrolytes in the Semi-crystalline State

Solid polymer electrolytes are promising in fulfilling the requirements for a stable lithium metal anode toward higher energy and power densities. In this work, we investigate the segmental dynamics, ionic conductivity, and crystallinity of a polymer electrolyte consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and lithium triflate salt, in the semi-crystalline state. Using quasi-elastic neutron scattering, the segmental dynamics of PEO chains confined between the crystalline lamellae is quantified, using Cole-Cole analysis. We show that the structural relaxation time, τ0, of PEO equilibrated near room temperature is six-fold longer than the same sample that had just cooled down to room temperature. This corresponds to a three-fold smaller ionic conductivity in the equilibrated condition. This work reveals that the segmental dynamics of semi-crystalline polymer electrolytes is very sensitive to thermal history. We demonstrate that quasi-elastic neutron scattering can be used to characterize the ion transport and segmental dynamics in the semi-crystalline state.

Melt Rheological Behavior and Morphology of Poly(ethylene oxide)/Natural Rubber-graft-Poly(methyl methacrylate) Blends

The influence of morphology on the rheological properties of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and natural rubber-graft-poly(methyl methacrylate) (NR-g-PMMA) blends in the melt was investigated. The blends were prepared at different blend compositions by a solution-casting method. Linear viscoelastic shear oscillations measurements were performed in order to determine the elastic and viscous properties of the blends in the melt. The rheological results suggested that the blending of the two constituents reduced the elasticity and viscosity of the blends. The addition of an even small amount of NR-g-PMMA to PEO changed the liquid-like behavior of PEO to more solid-like behavior. Morphological investigations were carried out by optical microscopy to establish the relationship between morphology and melt viscosity. Depending on the blend compositions and viscosities, either droplet-matrix or co-continuous morphologies was observed. PEO/NR-g-PMMA blends exhibited a broad co-continuity range, and phase inversion was suggested to occur at the PEO/NR-g-PMMA blend with a mass ratio of 60/40 (m/m), when NR-g-PMMA was added to PEO as a matrix.

Deformation of Chemically Heterogeneous Interfacial Layers of Polymer Nanocomposites

Dynamics of entangled interfacial polymer layers around nanoparticles determine the linear rheological properties of polymer nanocomposites. In this study, the nonlinear elastic properties of nanocomposites are examined under large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) flow to reveal the effect of interfacial chemical heterogeneity on the deformation mechanism of polymer-grafted and polymer-adsorbed nanoparticle composites. Adsorbed-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layers presented stronger interfacial stiffening and reinforcement than PMMA-grafted layers. Chemical heterogeneities of interfacial layers, provided by polymer-adsorbed and low graft density particles, deformed at smaller strains than the poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix. Interfaces of loosely bound PMMA and PEO exhibited stiffening at low strains due to the enhanced chain mixing and entanglements. These results demonstrate that chemical and dynamic heterogeneities in interfacial layers have significant importance in designing adaptive polymer nanocomposites for large shear deformation.

Dynamics of Architecturally Engineered All-Polymer Nanocomposites

We present nanocomposite materials formed by using glassy star-shaped polymers as nanofillers and dispersing them in soft matrices. The resulting "architecturally engineered" polymer nanocomposites structurally reside between the linear homopolymer blends and the conventional polymer nanocomposites with inorganic fillers, inducing reinforcement, which can be as strong as that of solid nanoparticles, or softening depending on the compactness and concentration of the nanoparticles. Such behavior can be traced back to the dynamical features at the local segmental and the chain level, which we investigated using neutron scattering over a wide range of time and length scales in the glassy and melt states of the nanocomposites. The local and segmental dynamics as well as the degree of chain-chain entanglements are all modified by the star-shaped fillers. The presented approach to tuning the physical properties of all-polymer-based nanocomposites is readily adaptable to other polymer architectures with immediate applications in numerous areas including gas separation membranes, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and functional coatings.

Reversible Thermal Stiffening in Polymer Nanocomposites

Miscible polymer blends with different glass transition temperatures (Tg) are known to create confined interphases between glassy and mobile chains. Here, we show that nanoparticles adsorbed with a high-Tg polymer, poly(methyl methacrylate), and dispersed in a low-Tg matrix polymer, poly(ethylene oxide), exhibit a liquid-to-solid transition at temperatures above Tg's of both polymers. The mechanical adaptivity of nanocomposites to temperature underlies the existence of dynamically asymmetric bound layers on nanoparticles and more importantly reveals their impact on macroscopic mechanical response of composites. The unusual reversible stiffening behavior sets these materials apart from conventional polymer composites that soften upon heating. The presented stiffening mechanism in polymer nanocomposites can be used in applications for flexible electronics or mechanically induced actuators responding to environmental changes like temperature or magnetic fields.

Kinetic Polymer Arrest in Percolated SWNT Networks

Particle-polymer attractions in nanocomposites can cause significant heterogeneities in the polymer dynamics and remarkably impact the material properties. Dynamical perturbations are generally expected to be limited to interfacial polymer segments. However, composites with highly anisotropic nanoparticles usually exhibit very low percolation thresholds. In such systems, the overlapping interfacial regions could result in a complex polymer relaxation behavior that is unanticipated from dilute nanoparticle dispersions in polymer matrices. To understand this behavior, we examine a system of percolated single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in a polymer matrix, PMMA, which is known to have strong interfacial binding. Neutron spectroscopy measurements on the composites reveal not only an interfacial polymer layer that is transiently pinned to the SWNT surface, but suggest that the percolated network forms a kinetic cage that dramatically restricts both local and cooperative relaxations of noninterfacial polymer segments. These findings should help guide theories and simulations of hierarchical polymer dynamics in nanocomposites.

Quasielastic neutron scattering study of hydrogen motions in an aqueous poly(vinyl methyl ether) solution

We present a quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) investigation of the component dynamics in an aqueous Poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) solution (30% water content in weight). In the glassy state, an important shift in the Boson peak of PVME is found upon hydration. At higher temperatures, the diffusive-like motions of the components take place with very different characteristic times, revealing a strong dynamic asymmetry that increases with decreasing T. For both components, we observe stretching of the scattering functions with respect to those in the bulk and non-Gaussian behavior in the whole momentum transfer range investigated. To explain these observations we invoke a distribution of mobilities for both components, probably originated from structural heterogeneities. The diffusive-like motion of PVME in solution takes place faster and apparently in a more continuous way than in bulk. We find that the T-dependence of the characteristic relaxation time of water changes at T ≲ 225 K, near the temperature where a crossover from a low temperature Arrhenius to a high temperature cooperative behavior has been observed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) [S. Cerveny, J. Colmenero and A. Alegría, Macromolecules, 38, 7056 (2005)]. This observation might be a signature of the onset of confined dynamics of water due to the freezing of the PVME dynamics, that has been selectively followed by these QENS experiments. On the other hand, revisiting the BDS results on this system we could identify an additional "fast" process that can be attributed to water motions coupled with PVME local relaxations that could strongly affect the QENS results. Both kinds of interpretations, confinement effects due to the increasing dynamic asymmetry and influence of localized motions, could provide alternative scenarios to the invoked "strong-to-fragile" transition.

Neutron scattering study of the dynamics of a polymer melt under nanoscopic confinement

Poly(ethylene oxide) confined in an anodic aluminum oxide solid matrix has been studied by different neutron scattering techniques in the momentum transfer (Q) range 0.2<or=Q=/Q/<or=1.9 A(-1). The cylindrical pores of the matrix present a diameter (40 nm) much smaller than their length (150 microm) and are parallel and hexagonally ordered. In particular, we investigated the neutron intensity scattered for two orientations of the sample with respect to the incident beam, for which the Q direction was either parallel or perpendicular to the pores for a scattering angle of 90 degrees . Diffuse neutron scattering at room temperature has shown that the aluminum oxide has amorphous structure and the polymer in the nanoporous matrix is partially crystallized. Concerning the dynamical behavior, for Q<1 A(-1), the spectra show Rouse-like motions indistinguishable from those in the bulk within the uncertainties. In the high-Q limit we observe a slowing down of the dynamics with respect to the bulk behavior that evidences an effect of confinement. This effect is more pronounced for molecular displacements perpendicular to the pore axis than for parallel displacements. Our results clearly rule out the strong corset effect proposed for this polymer from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies and can be rationalized by assuming that the interactions with the pore walls affect one to two adjacent monomer monolayers.

Consequence of excess configurational entropy on fragility: the case of a polymer-oligomer blend

By taking advantage of the molecular weight dependence of the glass transition of polymers and their ability to form perfectly miscible blends, we propose a way to modify the fragility of a system, from fragile to strong, keeping the same glass properties, i.e., vibrational density of states, mean-square displacement, and local structure. Both slow and fast dynamics are investigated by calorimetry and neutron scattering in an athermal polystyrene-oligomer blend, and compared to those of a pure 17-mer polystyrene considered to be a reference, of the same Tg. Whereas the blend and the pure 17-mer have the same heat capacity in the glass and in the liquid, their fragilities differ strongly. Thus, the difference in fragility is related to an extra configurational entropy created by the mixing process and acting at a scale much larger than the interchain distance, without affecting the fast dynamics and the structure of the glass.

Characterization of the "simple-liquid" state in a polymeric system: coherent and incoherent scattering functions

By means of time-of-flight neutron scattering, we have characterized the dynamic structure factor and the hydrogen motions of polyethylene above its melting point. As signatures of simple-liquid dynamics, we observe that (i) in the explored dynamic window, the intermediate scattering functions display a single-step decay, without reminiscence of cage effects, and (ii) the structural relaxation as observed at the intermolecular structure factor peak shows a weak temperature dependence, indicating a low degree of interchain cooperativity. However, stretched functional forms are observed for all length scales and temperatures investigated. An apparent direct crossover from the microscopic regime to Rouse-like dynamics suggests an essential role of connectivity in the observed stretching. Finally, while at momentum-transfer values above the structure factor peak the relation between coherent and incoherent characteristic times is reasonably described by the de Gennes narrowing, at larger length scales it is not reproduced by any existing approach.

Segmental dynamics in miscible polymer blends: recent results and open questions

In this short review we summarize the outcome of the large amount of effort made during the past decade from both the experimental and the theoretical point of view in order to understand the effect of blending on the segmental dynamics in polymers. Each of the two families of models proposed-one based on thermally activated concentration fluctuations, the other on chain connectivity effects-account for each of the two main experimental observations: the broadening of the component response with respect to that of the homopolymer and the dynamic heterogeneity, respectively. The complementarity of these approaches, their main achievements and failures, are critically revised. We also include recent results on blends of components with very different mobilities. In the neighbourhood of the glass-transition of the slow polymer, the dynamics of the other component seem to be confined within the frozen chains. We suggest possible ingredients and new routes to be considered in order to elaborate more predictive theoretical frameworks for all these phenomena.

Polymer chain dynamics in a random environment: heterogeneous mobilities

We present a neutron scattering investigation on a miscible blend of two polymers with greatly different glass-transition temperatures Tg. Under such conditions, the nearly frozen high-Tg component imposes a random environment on the mobile chain. The results demand the consideration of a distribution of heterogeneous mobilities in the material and demonstrate that the larger scale dynamics of the fast component is not determined by the average local environment alone. This distribution of mobilities can be mapped quantitatively on the spectrum of local relaxation rates measured at high momentum transfers.
