Abstract
Poly(2,5-alkylene furanoate)s are bio-based, smart, and innovative polymers that are considered the most promising materials to replace oil-based plastics. These polymers can be synthesized using ecofriendly approaches, starting from renewable sources, and result into final products with properties comparable and even better than those presented by their terephthalic counterparts. In this work, we present the molecular dynamics of four 100% bio-based poly(alkylene 2,5-furanoate)s, using broadband dielectric spectroscopy measurements that covered a wide temperature and frequency range. We unveiled complex local relaxations, characterized by the simultaneous presence of two components, which were dependent on thermal treatment. The segmental relaxation showed relaxation times and strengths depending on the glycolic subunit length, which were furthermore confirmed by high-frequency experiments in the molten region of the polymers. Our results allowed determining structure-property relations that are able to provide further understanding about the excellent barrier properties of poly(alkylene 2,5-furanoate)s. In addition, we provide results of high industrial interest during polymer processing for possible industrial applications of poly(alkylene furanoate)s.

Abstract
Specific heat spectroscopy (SHS) employing AC nanochip calorimetry was used to investigate the glassy dynamics of ultra-thin films (thicknesses: 10 nm-340 nm) of a polymer blend, which is miscible in the bulk. In detail, a Poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME)/Polystyrene (PS) blend with the composition of 25/75 wt. % was studied. The film thickness was controlled by ellipsometry while the film topography was checked by atomic force microscopy. The results are discussed in the framework of the balance between an adsorbed and a free surface layer on the glassy dynamics. By a self-assembling process, a layer with a reduced mobility is irreversibly adsorbed at the polymer/substrate interface. This layer is discussed employing two different scenarios. In the first approach, it is assumed that a PS-rich layer is adsorbed at the substrate. Whereas in the second approach, a PVME-rich layer is suggested to be formed at the SiO2 substrate. Further, due to the lower surface tension of PVME, with respect to air, a nanometer thick PVME-rich surface layer, with higher molecular mobility, is formed at the polymer/air interface. By measuring the glassy dynamics of the thin films of PVME/PS in dependence on the film thickness, it was shown that down to 30 nm thicknesses, the dynamic Tg of the whole film was strongly influenced by the adsorbed layer yielding a systematic increase in the dynamic Tg with decreasing the film thickness. However, at a thickness of ca. 30 nm, the influence of the mobile surface layer becomes more pronounced. This results in a systematic decrease in Tg with the further decrease of the film thickness, below 30 nm. These results were discussed with respect to thin films of PVME/PS blend with a composition of 50/50 wt. % as well as literature results.

Abstract
In this article we review the recent polymer literature where dielectric spectroscopy has been used to investigate the segmental dynamics of polymers under the constraints produced by self-structuring. Specifically, we consider three cases: (i) semicrystalline polymers, (ii) segregated block-copolymers, and (iii) asymmetric miscible polymer blends. In these three situations the characteristics of the dielectric relaxation associated with the polymer segmental dynamics are markedly affected by the constraints imposed by the corresponding structural features. After reviewing in detail each of the polymer systems, the most common aspects are discussed in the context of the use of dielectric relaxation as a sensitive tool for analyzing structural features in nanostructured polymer systems.

Abstract
The fate of matter when decreasing the temperature at constant pressure is that of passing from gas to liquid and, subsequently, from liquid to crystal. However, a class of materials can exist in an amorphous phase below the melting temperature. On cooling such materials, a glass is formed; that is, a material with the rigidity of a solid but exhibiting no long-range order. The study of the thermodynamics and dynamics of glass-forming systems is the subject of continuous research. Within the wide variety of glass formers, an important sub-class is represented by glass forming polymers. The presence of chain connectivity and, in some cases, conformational disorder are unfavourable factors from the point of view of crystallization. Furthermore, many of them, such as amorphous thermoplastics, thermosets and rubbers, are widely employed in many applications. In this review, the peculiarities of the thermodynamics and dynamics of glass-forming polymers are discussed, with particular emphasis on those topics currently the subject of debate. In particular, the following aspects will be reviewed in the present work: (i) the connection between the pronounced slowing down of glassy dynamics on cooling towards the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the thermodynamics; and, (ii) the fate of the dynamics and thermodynamics below Tg. Both aspects are reviewed in light of the possible presence of a singularity at a finite temperature with diverging relaxation time and zero configurational entropy. In this context, the specificity of glass-forming polymers is emphasized.

Abstract
A parameter that is often used to characterize the dynamics of supercooled liquids is the dynamic fragility, however it is still debated how the fragility is related to other physical properties. Recent experimental data on colloidal systems have found that fragility decreases with increasing softness of the intermolecular potential. This result is in apparent disagreement with recent molecular dynamics simulations reporting the opposite behavior. Herein, using the thermodynamical scaling exponent γ as a measure of the steepness of the potential we show how these different results can be reconciled and also agree with previous results obtained for the dynamics of supercooled liquids at high pressures.

Abstract
Binary blends of polystyrene with oligostyrene are perfectly miscible (χ=0) yet dynamically heterogeneous. This is evidenced by independent probing of the dipole relaxation perpendicular to the backbone by dielectric spectroscopy and molecular dynamics. The self-concentration model with a single intramolecular length scale qualitatively describes the slower segmental dynamics. A quantitative comparison based on MD, however, requires a composition-dependent length scale. The pertinent dynamic length scale that best describes the slow segmental dynamics in miscible blends relates to both intra- and intermolecular contributions.

Abstract
The behavior of water dynamics confined in hydrated calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel has been investigated using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS; 10(-2)-10(6) Hz) in the low-temperature range (110-250 K). Different water contents in C-S-H gel were explored (from 6 to 15 wt%) where water remains amorphous for all the studied temperatures. Three relaxation processes were found by BDS (labeled 1 to 3 from the fastest to the slowest), two of them reported here for the first time. We show that a strong change in the dielectric relaxation of C-S-H gel occurs with increasing hydration, especially at a hydration level in which a monolayer of water around the basic units of cement materials is predicted by different structural models. Below this hydration level both processes 2 and 3 have an Arrhenius temperature dependence. However, at higher hydration level, a non-Arrhenius behavior temperature dependence for process 3 over the whole accessible temperature range and, a crossover from low-temperature Arrhenius to high-temperature non-Arrhenius behavior for process 2 are observed. Characteristics of these processes will be discussed in this work.

Abstract
Dielectric relaxation (DR) has shown to be a very useful technique to study dielectric materials like polymers and other glass formers, giving valuable information about the molecular dynamics of the system at different length and time scales. However, the standard DR techniques have a fundamental limitation: they have no spatial resolution. This is of course not a problem when homogeneous and non-structured systems are analyzed but it becomes an important limitation for studying the local properties of heterogeneous and/or nano-structured materials. To overcome this constrain we have developed a novel approach that allows quantitatively measuring the local dielectric permittivity of thin films at the nanoscale by means of Electrostatic Force Microscopy. The proposed experimental method is based on the detection of the local electric force gradient at different values of the tip-sample distance. The value of the dielectric permittivity is then calculated by fitting the experimental points using the Equivalent Charge Method. Even more interesting, we show how this approach can be extended in order to obtain quantitative dielectric images of insulating thin films with an excellent lateral resolution.

Abstract
Homogeneous diethyl phthalate/phenylphthalein-dimethylether (DEP/PDE) mixtures have been investigated by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Contrarily to the widespread view that homogenous binary mixtures should give rise to a single glass transition, the mixture displays two dynamics giving rise to two glass transitions. Such a finding can be rationalized invoking the self-concentration concept that relies on the localized nature of the glass transition phenomenon. In such a way, the analogy with miscible polymer blends, for which this concept has been introduced, is highlighted. A model based on the combination of the Adam-Gibbs (AG) theory of the glass transition and the self-concentration concept resulted to be fully predictive once the only unknown variable, namely, the glass-former specific parameter (alpha) connecting the characteristic length for the glass transition to the configurational entropy, is extracted applying the model itself to DEP/toluene and DEP/PDE solutions highly concentrated, respectively, in DEP and PDE. The alpha parameter obtained in such a way allows the precise determination of the most probable relaxation time even for those DEP/PDE mixtures displaying a strong overlap of the dielectric response. The model incorporating the self-concentration concept to the AG theory also provides the characteristic length scale for the glass transition for both DEP and PDE. Such a length scale was found to be on the order of 1-2 nm. This is comparable to that obtained for other glass formers.

Abstract
Plasticizers are usually added to polymers to give them the desired flexibility and processability by changing the dynamical properties of the polymer chains. It is therefore important to give a quantitative description about how the dynamic behavior of a given polymer is modified by the incorporation of a second component. We analyze in this work, by means of dielectric spectroscopy, the dynamics of poly(vinyl acetate)/diethyl phthalate mixtures, at different concentrations, over a broad range of frequency, pressure, and temperature. The dynamics of these particular mixtures show only one main relaxation process contrarily to what is observed in athermal miscible polymer mixtures. From the dielectric spectra the maximum relaxation time as a function of pressure and temperature was obtained and analyzed. We studied the pressure dependence of the glass transition temperature as well as the fragility of both the neat components and the mixtures at different concentrations (on the rich polymer range). Finally, the experimental data were rationalized within the framework of an Adam-Gibbs (AG) based approach recently developed [G. A. Schwartz et al., J. Chem. Phys. 127, 154907 (2007)]. The model, originally developed for athermal blends, is here modified to take into account the non-negligible interaction between polymer and plasticizer. We found that the temperature-pressure dependence of the alpha-relaxation time is very well described by this AG extended model.

Abstract
A systematic investigation by dielectric spectroscopy of 18 different water-rich mixtures with very different hydrophilic substances shows universal features for the water dynamics. The temperature dependence of the relaxation times exhibits a crossover from non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius behavior at the T(g) range of the mixtures. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the relaxation times presents a universal behavior both above and below the crossover temperature. We also show that these features suggest that the observed crossover is associated with the emergence of confinement effects.

Abstract
We present in this work a new model to describe the component segmental dynamics in miscible polymers blends as a function of pressure, temperature, and composition. The model is based on a combination of the Adam-Gibbs (AG) theory and the concept of the chain connectivity. In this paper we have extended our previous approach [D. Cangialosi et al. J. Chem. Phys. 123, 144908 (2005)] to include the effects of pressure in the component dynamics of miscible polymer blends. The resulting model has been tested on poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME)/polystyrene (PS) blends at different concentrations and in the temperature range where the system is in equilibrium. The results show an excellent agreement between the experimental and calculated relaxation times using only one fitting parameter. Once this parameter is known the model allows calculating the size of the relevant length scale where the segmental relaxation of the dielectrically active component takes place, i.e., the so called cooperative rearrangement region (CRR) in the AG framework. Thus the size of the CRR for PVME in the blends with PS has been determined as well as its dependence with pressure, temperature, and concentration.
