Abstract
Herein, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) measurements were carried out to study the kinetics of cold-crystallized poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) at the molecular level via qualitative analysis. The amplification of the VCD signals from intra- and inter-chain chiral interactions suggests the formation of partially ordered PDLA, followed by heterogeneous nucleation for crystallization. These results were further supported by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses.

Abstract
Nanonetwork-structured materials can be found in nature and synthetic materials. A double gyroid (DG) with a pair of chiral networks but opposite chirality can be formed from the self-assembly of diblock copolymers. For triblock terpolymers, an alternating gyroid (GA) with two chiral networks from distinct end blocks can be formed; however, the network chirality could be positive or negative arbitrarily, giving an achiral phase. Here, by taking advantage of chirality transfer at different length scales, GA with controlled chirality can be achieved through the self-assembly of a chiral triblock terpolymer. With the homochiral evolution from monomer to multichain domain morphology through self-assembly, the triblock terpolymer composed of a chiral end block with a single-handed helical polymer chain gives the chiral network from the chiral end block having a particular handed network. Our real-space analyses reveal the preferred chiral sense of the network in the GA, leading to a chiral phase.

Abstract
Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (gabs and glum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Abstract
![]()
As
computing power increases, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD)
calculations on molecules of larger sizes and complexities become
possible. At the same time, the spectra resulting from these computations
become increasingly more cumbersome to analyze. Here, we describe
the GUI implementation into the Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF)
software package of VCDtools, a toolbox that provides a user-friendly
means to analyze VCD spectra. Key features are the use of the generalized
coupled oscillator analysis methods, as well as an easy visualization
of the atomic electric and magnetic transition dipole moments which
together provide detailed insight in the origin of the VCD intensity.
Using several prototypical examples we demonstrate the functionalities
of the program. In particular, we show how the spectra can be analyzed
to detect differences between theory and experiment arising from large-amplitude
motions or incorrect molecular structures and, most importantly, how
the program can be used to prevent incorrect enantiomeric assignments.

Abstract
Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) studies are reported on a chiral compound in which a fullerene C60 moiety is used as an electron acceptor and local VCD amplifier for an alanine-based peptide chain. Four redox states are investigated in this study, of which three are reduced species that possess low-lying electronic states as confirmed by UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry. VCD measurements in combination with (TD)DFT calculations are used to investigate (i) how the low-lying electronic states of the reduced species modulate the amplification of VCD signals, (ii) how this amplification depends on the distance between oscillator and amplifier, and (iii) how the spatial extent of the amplifier influences amplification. These results pave the way for further development of tailored molecular VCD amplifiers.

Abstract
In this manuscript, we designed and synthesized three core cross-linked micelles (M-5L, P-5L, and P-5D) with redox-responsive disulfide bonds in the core and carrying optically active helical polyisocyanide arms. Their arms were different in the helicity of the main chain and the chirality of the side groups. These micelles showed excellent redox-responsiveness to reducing agent. However, because of the different chiralities of the arms, the three micelles exhibited different performances in drug delivery and controlled release. The M-5L micelle carrying left-handed helical arms showed better therapeutic effect than the other two due to the rapid cell membrane permeability.

Abstract

C-terminal truncations
of monomeric wild-type alpha-synuclein (henceforth
WT-αS) have been shown to enhance the formation of amyloid aggregates
both in vivo and in vitro and have
been associated with accelerated progression of Parkinson’s
disease (PD). The correlation with PD may not solely be a result of
faster aggregation, but also of which fibril polymorphs are preferentially
formed when the C-terminal residues are deleted. Considering that
different polymorphs are known to result in distinct pathologies,
it is important to understand how these truncations affect the organization
of αS into fibrils. Here we present high-resolution microscopy
and advanced vibrational spectroscopy studies that indicate that the
C-terminal truncation variant of αS, lacking residues 109–140
(henceforth referred to as 1–108-αS), forms amyloid fibrils
with a distinct structure and morphology. The 1–108-αS
fibrils have a unique negative circular dichroism band at ∼230
nm, a feature that differs from the canonical ∼218 nm band
usually observed for amyloid fibrils. We show evidence that 1–108-αS
fibrils consist of strongly twisted β-sheets with an increased
inter-β-sheet distance and a higher solvent exposure than WT-αS
fibrils, which is also indicated by the pronounced differences in
the 1D-IR (FTIR), 2D-IR, and vibrational circular dichroism spectra.
As a result of their distinct β-sheet structure, 1–108-αS
fibrils resist incorporation of WT-αS monomers.

Abstract
The significance of chirality transfer is not only involved in biological systems, such as the origin of homochiral structures in life but also in man-made chemicals and materials. How the chiral bias transfers from molecular level (molecular chirality) to helical chain (conformational chirality) and then to helical superstructure or phase (hierarchical chirality) from self-assembly is vital for the chemical and biological processes in nature, such as communication, replication, and enzyme catalysis. In this Account, we summarize the methodologies for the examination of homochiral evolution at different length scales based on our recent studies with respect to the self-assembly of chiral polymers and chiral block copolymers (BCPs*). A helical (H*) phase to distinguish its P622 symmetry from that of normal hexagonally packed cylinder phase was discovered in the self-assembly of BCPs* due to the chirality effect on BCP self-assembly. Enantiomeric polylactide-containing BCPs*, polystyrene-b-poly(l-lactide) (PS-PLLA) and polystyrene-b-poly(d-lactide) (PS-PDLA), were synthesized for the examination of homochiral evolution. The optical activity (molecular chirality) of constituted chiral repeating unit in the chiral polylactide is detected by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) whereas the conformational chirality of helical polylactide chain can be explicitly determined by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). The H* phases of the self-assembled polylactide-containing BCPs* can be directly visualized by 3D transmission electron microscopy (3D TEM) technique at which the handedness (hierarchical chirality) of the helical nanostructure is thus determined. The results from the ECD, VCD, and 3D TEM for the investigated chirality at different length scales suggest the homochiral evolution in the self-assembly of the BCPs*. For chiral polylactides, twisted lamellae in crystalline banded spherulite can be formed by dense packing scheme and effective interactions upon helical chains from self-assembly. The handedness of the twisted lamella can be determined by using rotation experiment of polarized light microscopy (PLM). Similar to the self-assembly of BCPs*, the examined results suggest the homochiral evolution in the crystallized chiral polylactides. The results presented in this Account demonstrate the notable progress in the spectral and morphological determination for the examination of molecular, conformational, and hierarchical chirality in self-assembled twisted superstructures of chiral polymers and helical phases of block copolymers and suggest the attainability of homochiral evolution in the self-assembly of chiral homopolymers and BCPs*. The suggested methodologies for the understanding of the mechanisms of the chirality transfer at different length scales provide the approaches to give Supporting Information for disclosing the mysteries of the homochiral evolution from molecular level.

In this review, we describe the recent advances in supramolecular helical assemblies formed from chiral and achiral small molecules, oligomers (foldamers), and helical and nonhelical polymers from the viewpoints of their formations with unique chiral phenomena, such as amplification of chirality during the dynamic helically assembled processes, properties, and specific functionalities, some of which have not been observed in or achieved by biological systems. In addition, a brief historical overview of the helical assemblies of small molecules and remarkable progress in the synthesis of single-stranded and multistranded helical foldamers and polymers, their properties, structures, and functions, mainly since 2009, will also be described.

Abstract
An optically transparent thin-layer electrochemical (OTTLE) cell with a locally extended optical path has been developed in order to perform vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy on chiral molecules prepared in specific oxidation states by means of electrochemical reduction or oxidation. The new design of the electrochemical cell successfully addresses the technical challenges involved in achieving sufficient infrared absorption. The VCD-OTTLE cell proves to be a valuable tool for the investigation of chiral redox-active molecules.
