Synthesis of Shape Amphiphiles Based on Functional Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane End-Capped Poly(l-Lactide) with Diverse Head Surface Chemistry

pH Effect on Particle Aggregation of Vanillin End-Capped Polylactides Bearing a Hydrophilic Group Connected by a Cyclic Acetal Moiety

To enhance the pH-responsiveness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) particles, desired vanillin acetal-based initiators were synthesized and functional PLA was initiated at the chain end. PLLA-V6-OEG₃ particles were prepared using polymers with various M_n values of 2400-4800 g/mol. PLLA-V6-OEG₃ was appropriated to achieve a pH-responsive behavior under physiological conditions within 3 min via the six-membered ring diol-ketone acetal. Moreover, it was found that the polymer chain length (M_n) influenced the aggregation rate. TiO₂ was selected as the blending agent to improve the aggregation rate. The PLLA-V6-OEG₃ blended with TiO₂ was found to accelerate the aggregation rate compared with that without TiO₂, and the best ratio of polymer/TiO₂ was 1:1. To study the effect of the chain end for stereocomplex polylactide (SC-PLA) particles, PLLA-V6-OEG₄ and PDLA-V6-OEG₄ were successfully synthesized. The obtained results of SC-PLA particle aggregation implied that the types of chain end and the molecular weight of polymer could influence the aggregation rate. The SC-V6-OEG₄ blended with TiO₂ could not make our target to aggregate under physiological conditions within 3 min. This study motivated us to control the particle aggregation rate under physiological conditions for applying as a target drug carrier which is significantly influenced by not only the molecular weight but also the hydrophilicity of the chain-end as well as the number of acetal bonds.

Discrete Giant Polymeric Chains Based on Nanosized Monomers

As size-amplified analogues of canonical macromolecules, polymeric chains built up by "giant" monomers represent an experimental realization of the "beads-on-a-string" model at larger length scales, which could provide insights into fundamental principles of polymer science. In this work, we modularly constructed discrete giant polymeric chains using nanosized building blocks (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, POSS) as basic repeat units through an efficient and robust iterative exponential growth approach, with precise control on molecular parameters, including size, composition, regioconfiguration, and surface functionalities. Their chemical structures were fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. With elaborately designed amphiphilic block POSS chains and their analogues made of conventional monomers, the size effects were delicately studied and highlighted. Interesting assembly behaviors emerge as a result of distinct interactions and molecular dynamics. This category of molecules shares general self-assembly characteristics as the conventional counterparts in terms of phase transition and evolution. Meanwhile, it turns out that the monomer size has profound impacts on phase stability, as a trade-off between entropic and enthalpic contributions. It may open up a door for modular and programmable design of interesting materials with complex structures and diverse functions.

Cage-like silsesquioxanes-based hybrid materials

Cage-like silsesquioxanes are considered to be ideal and versatile building blocks of hybrid materials due to their unique structures and excellent performance. This Perspective highlights recent advances in the field of cage-like silsesquioxane-based hybrid materials, ranging from monomer functionalization and materials preparation to application. The existing issues are reviewed and the challenges and prospects in this field are also discussed for further development and exploitation.

Analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: An update for 2011-2012

This review is the seventh update of the original article published in 1999 on the application of MALDI mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2012. General aspects such as theory of the MALDI process, matrices, derivatization, MALDI imaging, and fragmentation are covered in the first part of the review and applications to various structural types constitute the remainder. The main groups of compound are oligo- and poly-saccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosides, and biopharmaceuticals. Much of this material is presented in tabular form. Also discussed are medical and industrial applications of the technique, studies of enzyme reactions, and applications to chemical synthesis. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hierarchical Colloidal Polymeric Structure from Surfactant-Like Amphiphiles in Selective Solvents

We investigated the self-assembly of surfactant-like amphiphiles consisting of a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail using the dissipative particle dynamics method. By controlling the interaction parameter between the hydrophilic head and the solvent, the length of the hydrophobic tail, the size of the hydrophilic head, and the polymer concentration, we found seven self-assembled morphologies, including spherelike micelles, pomegranate-like micelles, hierarchical colloidal polymeric (HCP) structures, pomegranate-like columnar structures, branched hybrid structures, disklike micelles, and vesicles. Importantly, the HCP structure widely existing in this system has a regular two-component alternating structure and prospective application in soft-matter nanotechnology. The formation process and the structural properties of the HCP structure are intensively studied. The dimension of the HCP structure is largely controlled by the hydrophobic tail and the polymer concentration.

Engineering π–π interactions for enhanced photoluminescent properties: unique discrete dimeric packing of perylene diimides

This article reports the unique dimeric packing of POSS-PDI-POSS shape amphiphile which has great enhanced photoluminescent properties in the crystals compared with the more amorphous solid state.

Surfactant Behavior of Amphiphilic Polymer-Tethered Nanoparticles

In recent years, an emerging research area has been the surfactant behavior of polymer-tethered nanoparticles. In this feature article, we have provided a general introduction to the synthesis, self-assembly, and interfacial activity of polymer-tethered inorganic nanoparticles, polymer-tethered organic nanoparticles, and polymer-tethered natural nanoparticles. In addition, applications of the polymer-tethered nanoparticles in colloidal and materials science are briefly reviewed. All research demonstrates that amphiphilic polymer-tethered nanoparticles exhibit surfactant behavior and can be used as elemental building blocks for the fabrication of advanced structures by the self-assembly approach. The polymer-tethered nanoparticles provide new opportunities to engineer materials and biomaterials possessing specific functionality and physical properties.

Tube-graft-Sheet Nano-Objects Created by A Stepwise Self-Assembly of Polymer-Polyoxometalate Hybrids

In this work, we report the preparation of complex nano-objects by means of a stepwise self-assembly of two polymer-polyoxometalate hybrids (PPHs) in solution. The PPHs are designed and synthesized by tethering two linear poly(ε-caprolactone)s (PCL) of different molecular weights (MW) on a complex of a Wells-Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM) cluster and its countraions. The higher MW PCL-POM self-assembled into nanosheets, while the lower MW PCL-POM assembled into nanotubes just by altering the ratio of water in the DMF-water mixed solvent system. The two nano-objects have a similar membrane structure in which a PCL layer is sandwiched by the two POM-based complex layers. The PCL layer in the nanosheets is semicrystalline, while the PCL layer in the nanotubes is amorphous. We further exploited this MW-dependence to self-assemble the nanotubes on the nanosheet edges to create complex tube-graft-sheet nano-objects. We found that the nanotubes nucleate on the four {110} faces of the PCL crystal and then further grow along the crystallographic b-axis of the PCL crystal. Our findings offer hope for the further development of nano-objects with increasing complexity.

Star-Shaped and Linear POSS-Polylactide Hybrid Copolymers

Novel octakis-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (POSS-S-OH) as well as heptaisobutyl-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-S-OH) were synthesized. POSS structures, bearing both types of groups i.e., 2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl and the vinyl ones, pendant from the octahedral cage are also described. The synthetic pathway involved thiol-ene click reaction of 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH) to octavinyloctasilsesquioxane (POSS-Vi), and heptaisobutylvinyloctasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-Vi), in the presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile. The functionalized silsesquioxane cages of regular octahedral structure were used further as initiators for ring opening polymerization of L,L-dilactide, catalyzed by tin (II) 2-ethylhexanoate. The polymerization afforded biodegradable hybrid star shape and linear systems with an octasilsesquioxane cage as a core, bearing polylactide arm(s).

Supramolecular self-assembly of linear oligosilsesquioxanes on mica--AFM surface imaging and hydrophilicity studies

Linear oligomeric [2-(carboxymethylthio)ethylsilsesquioxanes] (LPSQ-COOH) adsorb spontaneously on muscovite mica and form smooth, well-ordered lamellar structures at the liquid-solid interface. Side carboxylic groups, having donor-acceptor character with regard to hydrogen bonds, are engaged both in multipoint molecule-to-substrate interactions and intermolecular cross-linking. The unique arrangement of silsesquioxane macromolecules, with COOH groups situated at the interface with air, produces highly hydrophilic surfaces of good thermal and solvolytic stability. Supramolecular assemblies of LPSQ-COOH were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) FTIR spectroscopy. Comparative height profile analysis combined with ATR-FTIR studies of the spectral regions characteristic of carboxylic groups and C1s core level envelope by XPS confirmed specific interactions between LPSQ-COOH and mica.

T10 Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Based Shape Amphiphiles with Diverse Head Functionalities via "Click" Chemistry

Head diversification of shape amphiphiles not only broadens the scope of supramolecular engineering for new self-organizing materials but also facilitates their potential applications in high technologies. In this letter, T₁₀ azido-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticle was used to construct new shape amphiphiles via sequential "click" chemistry for addressing two issues: (1) new symmetry of T₁₀ POSS head could enrich the self-assembly behaviors of shape amphiphiles, and (2) copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC)-based head functionalization strategy allows the introduction of diverse functionalities onto POSS heads, including bulky ligands (i.e., isobutyl POSS) and UV-attenuating ones (i.e., ferrocene and 4-cyano-4'-biphenyl). This study expands the library of POSS-based shape amphiphiles with numerous possibilities for head manipulations, offering an important step toward new shape amphiphiles beyond traditional hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature for potential applications in giant molecule-based nanoscience and technology.

Cascading One-Pot Synthesis of Single-Tailed and Asymmetric Multitailed Giant Surfactants

Rapid and precise synthesis of macromolecules has been a grand challenge in polymer chemistry. In this letter, we describe a convenient, rapid, and robust strategy for a one-pot synthesis of various precisely defined giant surfactants based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). The method combines orthogonal oxime ligation, strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC), and thiol-ene "click" coupling. The process is usually completed within 0.5-2 h and does not require chromatography methods for purification. With near quantitative conversion efficiency, the method yields giant surfactants with distinct topologies, including single-tailed and asymmetric, multitailed giant surfactants. Both polymer tail composition and POSS surface chemistry are controlled precisely and tuned independently, enabling the design and preparation of new classes of giant surfactants.
