Abstract
It is imperative to advance the structural design of conjugated materials to achieve a practical impact on the performance of photovoltaic devices. However, the effect of the linkage positions (meta-, para-) of the backbone on the molecular packing has been relatively little explored. In this study, we have synthesized two wide-bandgap polymer photovoltaic materials from identical monomers with different linkage positions, using dibenzo[c,h][2,6]-naphthyridine-5,11-(6H,12H)-dione (DBND) as the building block. This study shows that the para-connected polymer exhibits an unexpected 0.2 eV higher ionization potential and a resultant higher open-circuit voltage than the meta-connected counterpart. We found that different linkage positions result in different intermolecular binding energies and molecular aggregation conformations, leading to different HOMO energy levels and photovoltaic performances. Specifically, theoretical calculations and 2D-NMR indicate that P(p-DBND-f-2T) performs a segregated stacking of f-2T and DBND units, while P(m-DBND-f-2T) films form π-overlaps between f-2T and DBND. These results show that linkage position adjustment on the polymeric backbone exerts a profound influence on the molecular aggregation of the materials. Also, the effect of isomerism on the polymer backbone is crucial in designing polymer structures for photovoltaic applications.

Abstract
Organic semiconductor materials, especially donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers, have been increasingly applied in organic optoelectronic devices, such as organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic solar cells (OSCs). Plenty of high-performance OFETs and OSCs have been achieved based on varieties of structurally modified D-A polymers. As the basic building block of D-A polymers, acceptor moieties have drawn much attention. Among the numerous types, lactam- and imide-functionalized electron-deficient building blocks have been widely investigated. In this review, the structural evolution of lactam- or imide-containing acceptors (for instance, diketopyrrolopyrrole, isoindigo, naphthalene diimide, and perylene diimide) is covered and their representative polymers applied in OFETs and OSCs are also discussed, with a focus on the effect of varied structurally modified acceptor moieties on the physicochemical and photoelectrical properties of polymers. Additionally, this review discusses the current issues that need to be settled down and the further development of new types of acceptors. It is hoped that this review could help design new electron-deficient building blocks, find a more valid method to modify already reported acceptor units, and achieve high-performance semiconductor materials eventually.

Abstract
A simple route to the preparation of benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) based monomeric building blocks containing 2,2':6',2″-terpyridines is reported from a common precursor 4'-(4-pinacolatoboronphenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine via Suzuki coupling reaction. Self-assembly polymerization with ruthenium (II) ions under mild conditions yielded a series of novel metallo-supramolecular polymers with weak donor-acceptor (D-A) structures based on benzodipyrrolidone. The structure of the bridge connected BDP with terpyridine have a significant impact on the wavelength and intensity of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) absorption peak. The resulting metallo-polymers exhibited strong double absorption bands around 315 nm and 510 nm involved in π-π* transitions and ICT or metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands. The forming of D-A structure and coordination with ruthenium (II) ions is favorable to narrow the energy gap and the energy gaps of the resulting metallo-supramolecular polymers are 2.01 and 1.62 eV, respectively.

Abstract
Singlet fission (SF), the conversion of one high-energy singlet to two low-energy triplets, provides the potential to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. In the SF chromophores with C2h symmetry, exemplified by polyenes, singlet-to-triplet conversion generally involves a low-lying 21Ag dark state, which serves as either a multiexciton (ME) intermediate to promote the SF process or a parasitic trap state to shunt excited-state populations via internal conversion. This controversial behavior calls for a deep understanding of dark-state-related photophysics involving the higher-lying singlet state. However, the optical "dark" and "transient" nature of these dark states and strong correlation feature of double exciton species make their characterization and interpretation challenging from both experimental and computational perspectives. In the present work combining transient spectroscopy and multireference electronic structure calculations (XDW-CASPT2), we addressed a new photophysical model, i.e., a high-lying 31Ag dark-state-mediated ultrafast SF process in the benzodipyrrolidone (BDPP) skeleton. Such a 31Ag dark state with distinctive double excitation character, described as the ME state, could be populated from the initial 11Bu bright state on an ultrafast time scale given the quasi-degeneracy and intersection of the two electronic states. Furthermore, the suitable optical band gap and triplet energy, high triplet yield, and excellent photostability render BDPP a promising SF candidate for photovoltaic devices. These results not only enrich the arsenal of SF materials but also shed new insights into the understanding of dark-state-related photophysics, which could promote the development of new SF-active materials.

Abstract
π-Conjugated organic donor-acceptor (D-A) type polymers are widely developed and used in electronic device. Among which, diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based polymers have received the most attention due to their high performances. The novel chromophores named 1,3,4,6-tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2,5-dione (isoDPP), benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) and naphthodipyrrolidone (NDP) are resemble DPP in chemical structure. IsoDPP is an isomer of DPP, with the switching position of carbonyl and amide units. The cores of BDP and NDP are tri- and tetracyclic, whereas isoDPP is bicyclic. π-Conjugation extension could result polymers with distinct optical, electrochemical and device performance. It is expected that the polymers containing these high-performance electron-deficient pigments are potential in the electronic device applications, and have the potential to be better than the DPP-based ones. IsoDPP, BDP, and NDP based polymers are synthesized since 2011, and have not receive desirable attention. In this work, the synthesis, properties (optical and electrochemical characteristics), electronic device as well as their relationship depending on core-extension or structure subtle optimization have been reviewed. The final goal is to outline a theoretical scaffold for the design the D-A type conjugated polymers, which is potential for high-performance electronic devices.

Lee KC, Park WT, Noh YY, Yang C. Benzodipyrrolidone (BDP)-based polymer semiconductors containing a series of chalcogen atoms: comprehensive investigation of the effect of heteroaromatic blocks on intrinsic semiconducting properties. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2014; 6:4872-4882. [PMID: 24620709 DOI: 10.1021/am405917a] [Citation(s) in RCA: 13] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 06/03/2023]
Abstract
In order to determine the effects of actual 'chalcogen atoms' on semiconducting properties for application in a variety of optoelectronic devices, a class of donor (D)-acceptor (A) polymer semiconductors, namely PBDP-Fu, PBDP-Th, and PBDP-Se, containing the recently formulated benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) accepting unit and furan (Fu), thiophene (Th), or selenophene (Se) as a donating unit has been synthesized, characterized, and used in an active layer of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). With the LUMO levels being comparatively consistent for all three polymers (-3.58 to -3.60 eV) due to the dominant BDP contribution to the polymer backbone, the HOMO energies are somewhat sensitive to the structurally distinctive feature of the donor counits used. Utilizing a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), it is apparent that further crystalline domains occur with edge-on orientation for the polymers (PBDP-Th and PBDP-Se) with relatively heavier chalcogen atoms such as Th and Se, compared with PBDP-Fu which has a rather amorphous nature. Investigation of their OFET performance indicates that all the polymers show well balanced ambipolar operations. The desirable morphological structures of both the PBDP-Th and PBDP-Se result in higher mobilities in OFETs than those of PBDP-Fu. In particular, 200 °C annealed PBDP-Se OFETs results in ambipolarity being mobile for both holes of up to 1.7 × 10(-2) cm(2)/V·s and electrodes of up to 1.9 × 10(-2) cm(2)/V·s. In addition, OFETs with PBDP-Th show nearly equivalent charge carrier mobilities for both holes (μ(h) = 1.2 × 10(-2) cm(2)/V·s) and electrons (μ(e) = 1.1 × 10(-2) cm(2)/V·s). Consequently, we systematically demonstrate how the manipulation of existing heteroaromatics can modulate the electronic properties of conjugated D-A polymers, elucidating structure-property relationships that are desirable for the rational design of next generation materials.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and characterization of two solution-processable pyromellitic diimide (PyDI)-acetylene-based conjugated homopolymers. Adjacent PyDI cores were connected with triple bond linkages by reacting 3,6-dibromo-N,N'-dialkyl pyromellitic diimides with bis(tributylstannyl)acetylene under Stille coupling conditions. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that these polymers have sufficient electron affinity to accept electrons. Absorption spectra revealed that one polymer, with a simple octyl chain, has greater intermolecular interaction or conjugation after forming a thin film, and that film exhibited electron transport in top-gate bottom-contact mode organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results show that the octyl polymer is amorphous on the bulk scale. The polymer exhibited electron mobility of about 2 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 with on/off ratio of 103 and is the simplest n-channel polymer yet reported. A 4-trifluoromethylphenethyl side chain did not result in measurable electron mobility. The octyl polymer exhibited negative Seebeck coefficient on the order of -40 μV/K in thermoelectric devices, further substantiating its n-channel activity. The demonstration of electron transport from such a simple polymer has opened a new path for obtaining n-channel semiconducting activity from polymer films.
