A novel bis-pillar[5]arene dicarboxylic acid self-assembles in the presence of 1,12-diaminododecane to yield overall neutral, internally ion-paired supramolecular polymers. Their aggregation, binding mode, and morphology can be tuned by external stimuli such as solvent polarity, concentration, and base treatment.

Copolymers of ε-caprolactone and ε-caprolactam via polyesterification: towards sequence-controlled poly(ester amide)s

Alternating Sequence Control for Poly(ester amide)s by Organocatalyzed Ring-Opening Polymerization

Sequence-controlled polymerization is the forefront of polymer chemistry. Herein, the feasibility of sequence regulation by using organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP) is demonstrated. In particular, ring expansion strategy is employed to synthesize pre-organized monomers 1 and 2. ROP is conducted by using 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene and benzyl alcohol as the catalyst and initiator, respectively. Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) P1-P3 comprising glycolic acid, lactic acid, and 7-aminoheptanoic acid units are obtained in high molecular weights and good yields. NMR and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry results verify the microstructural integrity of P1 and P2. Differential scanning calorimetry results show that PEA without methyl branches is crystalline. Moreover, thermal stability, surface wettability, and degradation profiles of P1-P3 are also investigated.

Ring/Chain Morphology Control in Overall-Neutral, Internally Ion-Paired Supramolecular Polymers

The self-assembly of internally ion-paired, neutral AA/BB-type supramolecular polymers composed of complementary di-ionizable homoditopic pairs of monomers is reported. Host-to-guest double-proton transfer mediates the recognition between bis-calix[5]arenedicarboxylic acids and α,ω-diaminoalkanes to yield cyclic, doughnut-shaped assemblies with morphologies (i.e., cyclic vs. linear) that can be controlled by means of external chemical stimuli. The behavior of these intriguing aggregates, both in solution and on surfaces, has been investigated by a combination of ¹ H and DOSY NMR spectroscopy, light-scattering, and atomic force microscopy.

Sequence-controlled supramolecular terpolymerization directed by specific molecular recognitions

Nature precisely manipulates primary monomer sequences in biopolymers. In synthetic polymer sequences, this precision has been limited because of the lack of polymerization techniques for conventional polymer synthesis. Engineering the primary monomer sequence of a polymer main chain represents a considerable challenge in polymer science. Here, we report the development of sequence-controlled supramolecular terpolymerization via a self-sorting behavior among three sets of monomers possessing mismatched host-guest pairs. Complementary biscalix[5]arene-C60, bisporphyrin-trinitrofluorenone (TNF), and Hamilton's bis(acetamidopyridinyl)isophthalamide-barbiturate hydrogen-bonding host-guest complexes are separately incorporated into heteroditopic monomers that then generate an ABC sequence-controlled supramolecular terpolymer. The polymeric nature of the supramolecular terpolymer is confirmed in both solution and solid states. Our synthetic methodology may pave an avenue for constructing polymers with tailored sequences that are associated with advanced functions.Nature can precisely control monomer sequences in biopolymers, but this is somewhat problematic in the formation of synthetic polymers. Exclusive One-Way Cycle Sequence Control in Cationic Terpolymerization of General-Purpose Monomers via Concurrent Vinyl-Addition, Ring-Opening, and Carbonyl-Addition Mechanisms

Cationic terpolymerization of vinyl ether (VE), oxirane, and ketone successfully proceeded via unprecedented concurrent vinyl-addition, ring-opening, and carbonyl-addition mechanisms. In particular, the use of cyclohexene oxide as an oxirane resulted in terpolymerization via an exclusive one-way cycle, i.e., the reactions occurred only in the VE → oxirane, oxirane → ketone, and ketone → VE directions. Terpolymers that have repeating units of (VE_∼2-oxirane_∼2-ketone)_n were obtained under appropriate conditions. In addition, no two-monomer combination achieved efficient copolymerization, which suggests that three specific types of crossover reactions are required for successful terpolymerization. The presence of a ketone, a compound that has rarely been employed as a monomer, is indispensable for a one-way cycle: terpolymerization also proceeded with an aliphatic aldehyde but resulted in two-way crossover reactions at the aldehyde-derived propagating ends.

Synthesis of Sequence-Regulated Polymers: Alternating Polyacetylene through Regioselective Anionic Polymerization of Butadiene Derivatives

We hereby report a strategy to synthesize sequence-regulated substituted polyacetylenes using living anionic polymerization of designed monomers, that is, 2,4-disubstituted butadienes. It is found that proper substituents, such as 2-isopropyl-4-phenyl, lead to nearly 100% 1,4-addition during the polymerization, thus, giving product with high regioregularity, precise molecular weight, and narrow molecular weight distribution. The product is convertible into sequence-regulated substituted polyacetylene by oxidative dehydrogenation using 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ). Block copolymers containing polyacetylene segment are also prepared. Owing to the versatility of the anionic reactions, the present strategy can serve as a powerful tool of precise control on polymer chain microstructure, architecture, and functionalities in the same time.

Combination of ATRA and ATRC for the synthesis of periodic vinyl copolymers

A new approach to periodic vinyl copolymers via combination of atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) and atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) is reported. The two examples are methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) periodic copolymer (P(SMMS)) and acrylonitrile (AN) and St periodic copolymer (P(SAAS)). First, two monomer sequence units (MSU) with built-in sequence, SMMS and SAAS, are synthesized through the controlled ATRA of two ATRP initiators with St. Then, the ATRC of SMMS and SAAS are conducted at high radical conditions to generate two types of high-molecular-weight copolymers, P(SMMS) and P(SAAS). Though side reactions can not be totally avoided, characterizations of the polymer structure with a variety of means confirm that the main chain structures of P(SMMS) and (PSAAS) are predominantly with the periodic sequences from the MSUs. Attempts to suppress the side reactions are successful via the MNP-mediated ATRC of SMMS and SAAS.

Synthesis of Sequence-Specific Vinyl Copolymers by Regioselective ROMP of Multiply Substituted Cyclooctenes

A variety of multisubstituted cyclooctenes were prepared and employed as monomers for ring-opening metathesis polymerization using the Grubbs second or third generation catalysts. The resulting polymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. Monomers possessing a substituent at the 3-position afforded highly regio- and stereoregular polyalkenamers, from which the corresponding sequence-specific vinyl quaterpolymers were obtained upon hydrogenation. Simultaneous control of tacticity was also demonstrated by employing monomers with defined stereochemistry.
