Theoretical Study of Phase Behavior of Frustrated ABC Linear Triblock Copolymers

Polymerization Induced Microphase Separation of ABC Triblock Copolymers for 3D Printing Nanostructured Materials

Polymerization-induced microphase separation (PIMS) is a versatile technique for producing nanostructured materials. In previous PIMS studies, the predominant approach involved employing homopolymers as macromolecular chain transfer agents (macroCTAs) to mediate the formation of nanostructured materials. In this article, the use of AB diblock copolymers as macroCTAs to design PIMS systems for 3D printing of nanostructured materials is investigated. Specifically, the influence of diblock copolymer composition and block sequence on the resulting nanostructures, and their subsequent impact on bulk properties is systematically investigated. Through careful manipulation of the A/B block ratios, the morphology and size of the nanodomains are successfully controlled. Remarkably, the sequence of A and B blocks significantly affects the microphase separation process, resulting in distinct morphologies. The effect can be attributed to changes in the interaction parameters (χAB, χBC, χAC) between the different block segments. Furthermore, the block sequence and composition exert profound influence on the thermomechanical, tensile, and swelling properties of 3D printed nanostructured materials. By leveraging this knowledge, it becomes possible to design advanced 3D printable materials with tailored properties, opening new avenues for material engineering.

Cross-domain Chirality Transfer in Self-Assembly of Chiral Block Copolymers

Chirality transfer is essential to acquire helical hierarchical superstructures from the self-assembly of supramolecular materials. By taking advantage of chirality transfers at different length scales through intra-chain and inter-chain chiral interactions, helical phase (H*) can be formed from the self-assembly of chiral block copolymers (BCPs*). In this study, chiral triblock terpolymers, polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PEO-PLLA), and polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-P4VP-PLLA) are synthesized for self-assembly. For PS-PEO-PLLA with an achiral PEO mid-block that is compatible with PLLA (chiral end-block), H* can be formed while the block length is below a critical value. By contrast, for the one with achiral P4VP mid-block that is incompatible with PLLA, the formation of H* phase would be suppressed regardless of the length of the mid-block, giving cylinder phase. Those results elucidate a new type of chirality transfer across the phase domain that is referred as cross-domain chirality transfer, providing complementary understanding of the chirality transfer at the interface of phase-separated domains.

Preparation, Properties, and Bioapplications of Block Copolymer Nanopatterns

Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly has emerged as a feasible method for large-scale fabrication with remarkable precision - features that are not common for most of the nanofabrication techniques. In this review, recent advancements in the molecular design of BCP along with state-of-the-art processing methodologies based on microphase separation alone or its combination with different lithography methods are presented. Furthermore, the bioapplications of the generated nanopatterns in the development of protein arrays, cell-selective surfaces, and antibacterial coatings are explored. Finally, the current challenges in the field are outlined and the potential breakthroughs that can be achieved by adopting BCP approaches already applied in the fabrication of electronic devices are discussed.

Solution Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Tadpole-like Giant Molecules Constructed by Monotethering Diblock Copolymer Chain onto a Nanoparticle

The self-assembly behavior of a tadpole-like giant molecule (TGM) constructed from a hydrophobic nanoparticle (NP) monotethered by a single amphiphilic AB diblock copolymer chain was investigated by combining self-consistent field theory and density functional theory in solution. The effects of the hydrophobicities of the B blocks and NPs (i.e., solvent properties) on the self-assembly behavior of the TGMs were investigated in the cases of weak and strong intramolecular interactions (i.e., incompatibilities) between the components of giant molecules, respectively. Besides conventional ordered aggregates (such as spheres, rings, and vesicles) with hydrophobic B-cores covered by NP shells, several aggregates with novel hierarchical structures, including vesicles with NP-inserted hydrophobic walls, bead-string-like micelles, and long cylindrical micelles with NP bumps, were obtained by tuning the solvent properties under different intramolecular interactions. Noteworthy that the simulation results show that the arrangement of the NP bumps on the long cylindrical micelles may have a certain degree of helicity, which means that these micelles may have some unique electromagnetic features such as circular dichroism. Phase diagrams as a function of the hydrophobicities of the B blocks and NPs were constructed to show the formation conditions of these novel structures. These findings can not only offer new insights into understanding of the self-assembly behavior of the TGM in solution but also provide useful guidance for simple and efficient regulation of the morphology, as well as the NP distribution and arrangement of the ordered aggregates in experiments.

Phase Behavior of Binary Blends of Diblock Copolymers: Progress and Opportunities

The phase behavior of binary blends of diblock copolymers has been examined extensively in the past decades. Experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated that mixing two different block copolymers provides an efficient and versatile route to regulate their self-assembled morphologies. A good understanding of the principles governing the self-assembly of block copolymer blends has been obtained from the study of A1B1/A2B2 diblock copolymer blends. The second (A2B2) diblocks could act synergistically as fillers and cosurfactants to regulate the domain size and interfacial properties, resulting in the formation of ordered phases not found in the parent (A1B1 or A2B2) diblock copolymer melts. The study of A1B1/A2B2 block copolymer blends further provides a solid foundation for future research on more complex block copolymer blends.

Multiblock copolymer synthesis via RAFT emulsion polymerization

A multiblock copolymer is a polymer of a specific structure that consists of multiple covalently linked segments, each comprising a different monomer type. The control of the monomer sequence has often been described as the "holy grail" of synthetic polymer chemistry, with the ultimate goal being synthetic access to polymers of a "perfect" structure, where each monomeric building block is placed at a desired position along the polymer chain. Given that polymer properties are intimately linked to the microstructure and monomer distribution along the constituent chains, it goes without saying that there exist seemingly endless opportunities in terms of fine-tuning the properties of such materials by careful consideration of the length of each block, the number and order of blocks, and the inclusion of monomers with specific functional groups. The area of multiblock copolymer synthesis remains relatively unexplored, in particular with regard to structure-property relationships, and there are currently significant opportunities for the design and synthesis of advanced materials. The present review focuses on the synthesis of multiblock copolymers via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization implemented as aqueous emulsion polymerization. RAFT emulsion polymerization offers intriguing opportunities not only for the advanced synthesis of multiblock copolymers, but also provides access to polymeric nanoparticles of specific morphologies. Precise multiblock copolymer synthesis coupled with self-assembly offers material morphology control on length scales ranging from a few nanometers to a micrometer. It is imperative that polymer chemists interact with physicists and material scientists to maximize the impact of these materials of the future.

Periodic Patchy Spheres Self-Assembled by AmBCAn' Multiblock Terpolymers

We have designed A_mBCA_n^' multiblock terpolymers and studied their self-assembly using self-consistent field theory, aiming to generate the periodically arranged patchy spheres and thus to clarify the regulation mechanism of the number of patches. A number of two-dimensional phase diagrams are constructed for three typical architectures A₂BCA₂^', A₂BCA₃^', and A₃BCA₂^'. Four kinds of stable patchy spheres with the number of patches as 2 (S₂), 4 (S₄), 5 (S₅), and 6 (S₆) are obtained. These phases follow a common transition sequence of S₂ → S₄ → S₅ → S₆ along with the increasing of the volume fraction of C-block (f_C), which forms the core sphere patched with B-domains. Moreover, the S₆ phase exhibits the widest stability window, while S₅ has the narrowest one. The increased arms of A'-blocks in A₂BCA₃^' architecture deflect the phase boundaries toward large f_C and accordingly expand the regions of these patchy spheres due to the amplified effect of spontaneous curvature. In contrast, the increased arms of A-blocks in A₃BCA₂^' remarkably expands the window of S₆ but narrows those of the other patchy spheres, which is mainly caused by increased packing frustration resulting from the reduced extension of the more divided A-blocks. The widest window of the S₆ phase reaches Δf_C ∼ 0.13, which is readily accessed by experiment. Our work not only demonstrates a self-assembly strategy to engineer the patchy spheres, but also sheds light on the regulation mechanism of the patchy number.

Hierarchically Chiral Nanostructures Self-Assembled from Nanoparticle Tethered Block Copolymers

Chiral nanostructures of nanoparticle assemblies have attracted tremendous interest for their fascinating functional properties. Herein, through theoretical simulations, we show that nanoparticle tethered block copolymers can self-assemble into hierarchically chiral nanostructures. Two-fold helices are formed in the hierarchically chiral nanostructures: the diblock copolymers form helical supercylinders while the nanoparticles arrange into chiral assemblies wrapped around the helical supercylinders. The hierarchically chiral nanostructures can be formed in a large parameter window. Circular dichroism calculations demonstrate that the coexistence of polymeric helices and chiral nanoparticle assemblies improves the chiroptical activity. These findings can provide guidelines for designing hierarchically ordered chiral nanostructures with advanced functional properties. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Mesoscale networks and corresponding transitions from self-assembly of block copolymers

A series of cubic network phases was obtained from the self-assembly of a single-composition lamellae (L)-forming block copolymer (BCP) polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) through solution casting using a PS-selective solvent. An unusual network phase in diblock copolymers, double-primitive phase (DP) with space group of [Formula: see text], can be observed. With the reduction of solvent evaporation rate for solution casting, a double-diamond phase (DD) with space group of [Formula: see text] can be formed. By taking advantage of thermal annealing, order-order transitions from the DP and DD phases to a double-gyroid phase (DG) with space group of [Formula: see text] can be identified. The order-order transitions from DP (hexapod network) to DD (tetrapod network), and finally to DG (trigonal planar network) are attributed to the reduction of the degree of packing frustration within the junction (node), different from the predicted Bonnet transformation from DD to DG, and finally to DP based on enthalpic consideration only. This discovery suggests a new methodology to acquire various network phases from a simple diblock system by kinetically controlling self-assembling process.

Order and Disorder in ABCA' Tetrablock Terpolymers

Self-assembly of poly(styrene)-block-poly(isoprene)-block-poly(lactide)-block-poly(styrene) (PS-PI-PLA-PS' or SILS') tetrablock terpolymers, where the volume fractions of the first three blocks are nearly equivalent, was studied both experimentally and using the self-consistent field theory (SCFT). SCFT indicates that addition of the terminal PS' chain to a low-molecular-mass, hexagonally packed cylinders forming, SIL precursor can produce a disordered state due to preferential mixing of the polystyrene end-blocks with the PI and PLA midblocks in the SILS' tetrablock, alleviating the unfavorable contact between the highly incompatible PI and PLA segments. In contrast, SCFT predicts that higher-molar-mass triblock precursors will maintain an ordered morphology upon addition of the terminal PS' block due to stronger overall segregation strengths. These predictions were tested using three sets of SILS' polymers that were synthesized based on three precursor SIL triblock polymers differing in total molar mass (14, 30, and 47 kg mol^-1) and varying the length of the terminal PS' chain. In the lowest-molar-mass set of tetrablock polymers, the shift from order to disorder was observed in the materials at ambient temperature as the molar mass of the terminal PS' block was increased, consistent with SCFT calculations. Disorder with longer S' chain lengths was not found in the two higher-molar-mass polymer sets; the medium-molar-mass set showed both microphase separation and long-range order based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), while the largest of these block polymers microphase separated but showed limited long-range order. The combination of the experimental and theoretical results presented in this work provides insights into the self-assembly of ABCA'-type polymers and highlights potential complications that arise from frustration in accessing well-ordered materials.

Tunable helical structures formed by ABC triblock copolymers under cylindrical confinement

Block copolymers confined in nanopores provide unique achiral systems for the formation of helical structures. With AB diblock copolymers, stable single and double helical structures are observed. Aiming to obtain more different helical structures, we replace the AB diblock copolymer with linear ABC triblock copolymers. We speculate that a core-shell superstructure is formed within the nanopore, which is composed of a C-core cylinder wrapped by B-helices within the A-shell. Accordingly, the pore surface is set to be most attractive to the majority A-block and a typical set of interaction parameters is chosen as χACN ≪ χABN = χBCN = 80 to generate the frustrated interfaces. Furthermore, the volume fraction of B-block is fixed as fB = 0.1 to form helical cylinders. A number of helical structures with strands ranging from 1 to 5 are predicted by self-consistent field theory, and in general, the number of strands decreases as the volume fraction of C-block fC increases in a given nanopore. More surprisingly, the variation of helical strand in the confined system has an opposite trend to that in the bulk, which mainly results from the constraint of the cylindrical confinement on the change of the curvature between the outer A-layer and the inner B/C-superdomain. Our work demonstrates a facile way to fabricate different helical superstructures.

Core-Shell and Zigzag Nanostructures from a Thin Film Silicon-Containing Conformationally Asymmetric Triblock Terpolymer

The self-assembly of multiblock copolymers generates diverse hierarchical nanostructures and greatly extends the range of microdomain geometries beyond those produced by diblock copolymers. We report the synthesis of a conformationally asymmetric ABC triblock terpolymer in which the end blocks are a mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer and poly(dimethylsiloxane), respectively, and its self-assembly under mixed solvent vapor annealing forms a range of sphere, cylinder, and perforated lamellar core-shell morphologies, as well as stacked multilevel structures. Sub-7 nm diameter SiO_x nanopatterns were generated by selective plasma etching of the small volume fraction Si-containing core block giving a line/space ratio of ∼1:4. Moreover, the conformational asymmetry of this terpolymer leads to zigzag cylinders on a flat substrate and stable cylinder alignment transverse to template sidewalls within lithographically patterned trenches.

Janus Nanostructures from ABC/B Triblock Terpolymer Blends

Lamella-forming ABC triblock terpolymers are convenient building blocks for the synthesis of soft Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) by crosslinking the B domain that is "sandwiched" between A and C lamellae. Despite thorough synthetic variation of the B fraction to control the geometry of the sandwiched microphase, so far only Janus spheres, cylinders, and sheets have been obtained. In this combined theoretical and experimental work, we show that the blending of polybutadiene homopolymer (hPB) into lamella morphologies of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polymethylmethacrylate (SBM) triblock terpolymers allows the continuous tuning of the polybutadiene (PB) microphase. We systematically vary the volume fraction of hPB in the system, and we find in both experiments and simulations morphological transitions from PB-cylinders to perforated PB-lamellae and further to continuous PB-lamellae. Our simulations show that the hPB is distributed homogeneously in the PB microdomains. Through crosslinking of the PB domain and redispersion in a common solvent for all blocks, we separate the bulk morphologies into Janus cylinders, perforated Janus sheets, and Janus sheets. These studies suggest that more complex Janus nanostructures could be generated from ABC triblock terpolymers than previously expected.

Self-assembly of phospholipid molecules in solutions under shear flows: Microstructures and phase diagrams

Shear-induced microstructures and their phase diagrams were investigated for phospholipid molecules in aqueous solution by dissipative particle dynamic simulation. Self-assembled microstructures, including spherical and cylindrical micelles, spherical vesicles, lamellae, undulated lamellae, perforated lamellae, and continuous networks, were observed under various shear flows and phospholipid concentrations, where the spatial inhomogeneity and symmetry were analysed. A series of phase diagrams were constructed based on the chain lengths under various phospholipid concentrations. The phase distributions showed that the structures with spherical symmetry could be shear-induced to structures with cylindrical symmetry in the dilute solutions. In the semi-concentrated solutions, the lamellae were located in most spaces under zero shear flows, which could be shear-induced into undulated lamellae and then into cylindrical micelles. For the concentrated solutions, the strong shear flows oriented the directions of multilayer lamellae and phase transitions appeared between several cylindrical network structures. These observations on shear-induced microstructures and their distributions revealed a promising approach that could be used to design bio-microstructures based on phospholipid molecules under shear flows.

Effect of Chain Architecture on Phase Behavior of Giant Surfactant Constructed from Nanoparticle Monotethered by Single Diblock Copolymer Chain

The phase behaviors of the giant surfactant constructed from a nanoparticle (NP) monotethered by a single AB diblock copolymer chain were investigated by combining self-consistent field theory and density functional theory. Three types of giant surfactants with different chain architectures were constructed via changing the location of NP on the diblock copolymer chain. The simulation results show that the introduction of the NP can induce phase separation of the originally disordered AB diblock copolymers, and phase diagrams as a function of the chain length ratio of A block and the attraction between A block and NP were constructed for the three giant surfactant systems. Via changing the location of NP from the end of B block to the AB-junction point and to the end of A block, the conformational entropies of the systems gradually decrease, leading to a significant difference in phase behaviors. When the NP is tethered to the end of B block, the giant surfactant system has the smallest phase-separation region in the phase diagram, and the resulting ordered structures have the smallest feature sizes. However, when the NP is tethered to the end of A block, the giant surfactant system has the largest phase-separation region, as well as the largest feature sizes of ordered structures. Moreover, the distributions of the NPs within microphase-separated domain can be well tailored by changing the chain length ratio of A block or the attraction between A block and NP in all of the three giant surfactant systems. These findings provide the guideline for the preparation of polymer-nanoparticle composites with controllable morphologies, desirable feature sizes, and precise NP distributions in experiments.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Double-Comb Triblock Terpolymers

Involving supramolecular chemistry in self-assembling block copolymer systems enables design of macromolecular architectures that are challenging to obtain through conventional all-covalent routes. In this work we present supramolecular double-comb triblock terpolymers in which both outer blocks are able to interact with a surfactant via hydrogen bonding and thereby form a comb-shaped architecture upon complexation. While the neat triblock terpolymer only formed a triple lamellar morphology, multiple hierarchical structures were observed in these supramolecular comb-coil-comb triblock terpolymers by simply adjusting the surfactant concentration. Structures included spheres on tetragonally packed cylinders-in-lamellae and spheres on double parallel lamellae-in-lamellae, as evidenced by electron microscopy and X-ray scattering. Incorporation of a middle coil block thus allowed an even higher macromolecular complexity than the previously reported double-comb diblock copolymers.

Thin Films with Perpendicular Tetragonally Packed Rectangular Rods Obtained from Blends of Linear ABC Block Terpolymers

A binary blend of poly(isoprene-block-styrene-block-(2-vinylpyridine)) (ISP) triblock terpolymers, having the same chain length but different compositions, was used to achieve an ordered lattice with 4-fold symmetry of rectangular-shaped rods of poly(isoprene) (I) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P). In given conditions, the I and P domains were oriented perpendicularly to the substrate, providing an appealing type of templates for nanopatterning. Thin films were prepared by spin coating, exposed to solvent vapor (providing morphological reorganization), and then characterized by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering. Selective I and P identifications were carried out by AFM and TEM on a model ISP, as well as development of a technique of electronic contrast enhancement to better assign the self-assembly structure in GISAXS.

Core-shell cylinder (CSC) nanotemplates comprising mussel-inspired catechol-containing triblock copolymers for silver nanoparticle arrays and ion conductive channels

Catechol moieties, which are found in mussel-adhesive proteins, allow the interaction of various kinds of materials that results in substantial adhesion to a wide variety of materials and in the reduction of metal ions to solid metals. Various types of catechol-containing polymers mimicking adhesion and reduction properties have been reported, however, due to its reactivity to a wide variety of functional groups, only a few reports about the formation of block and sequence controlled copolymers containing catechol groups. This is the first report about the synthesis of triblock copolymers containing catechol groups by reversible-addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The synthesized triblock copolymer forms a core-shell cylinder (CSC) phase-separated structure, in which PVCa domains located the surface of cylinders, and it works as a template for silver nanoparticle arrays and a proton conductive channel. Since triblock copolymer has broader latitude to form phase-separated structures, the triblock copolymer containing catechol groups can be suitable for templates of inorganic nanoparticle arrays.

Manipulating the ABCs of self-assembly via low-χ block polymer design

Block polymer self-assembly typically translates molecular chain connectivity into mesoscale structure by exploiting incompatible blocks with large interaction parameters (χ_ij). In this article, we demonstrate that the converse approach, encoding low-χ interactions in ABC bottlebrush triblock terpolymers (χ_AC [Formula: see text] 0), promotes organization into a unique mixed-domain lamellar morphology, which we designate LAM_P Transmission electron microscopy indicates that LAM_P exhibits ACBC domain connectivity, in contrast to conventional three-domain lamellae (LAM₃) with ABCB periods. Complementary small-angle X-ray scattering experiments reveal a strongly decreasing domain spacing with increasing total molar mass. Self-consistent field theory reinforces these observations and predicts that LAM_P is thermodynamically stable below a critical χ_AC, above which LAM₃ emerges. Both experiments and theory expose close analogies to ABA' triblock copolymer phase behavior, collectively suggesting that low-χ interactions between chemically similar or distinct blocks intimately influence self-assembly. These conclusions provide fresh opportunities for block polymer design with potential consequences spanning all self-assembling soft materials.

Self-Assembled Morphologies of Linear and Miktoarm Star Triblock Copolymer Monolayers

Monolayers of linear and miktoarm star ABC triblock copolymers with equal A and C blocks were investigated using self-consistent field theory. Monolayers of ABC triblock copolymers were formed between two parallel surfaces that were attractive to the A and C blocks. The repulsive interaction parameter χ_ACN between the A and C blocks was chosen to be weaker than the A/B and B/C interactions, quantified by χ_ABN and χ_BCN, respectively, such that the B blocks were confined at the A/C interface, resulting in various B domains with different geometries and arrangements. It was observed that two variables, namely, the strength of the surface fields and the film thickness, were dominant factors controlling the self-assembly of the B blocks into various morphologies. For the linear triblock copolymers, the morphologies of the B domains included disks, stripes (parallel cylinders), and hexagonal networks (inverse disks). For the miktoarm star triblock copolymers, the competition between the tendency to align the junction points along a straight line and the constraint on their arrangement from the surface interactions led to richer ordered morphologies. As a result of the packing of the junction points of the ABC miktoarm star copolymers, a counterintuitive phase sequence from low-curvature phases to high-curvature phases with increasing length of B block was predicted. The study indicates that the self-assembly of monolayers of ABC triblock copolymers provides an interesting platform for engineering novel morphologies.

Stability of the Frank-Kasper σ-phase in BABC linear tetrablock terpolymers

The phase behavior of B1AB2C tetrablock terpolymer melts is systematically studied using the self-consistent field theory, focusing on the emergence and stability of the complex Frank-Kasper σ-phase. Our study starts with an investigation of the stability region of the σ phase for a generic model of B1AB2C terpolymers, in which the C-blocks form spherical domains immersed in the A/B matrix. Then, we examine the stability of the σ phase for a model system with a specific set of parameters mimicking poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene-b-ethylene oxide) (SISO) block copolymers which were examined in recent experiments. Our results reveal that the formation of the σ phase is mainly governed by two factors. The first factor is the conformational asymmetry between the A/B-blocks and the C-block, similar to that in conformationally asymmetric AB-type block copolymers. The second factor is the specific chain architecture of B1AB2C. The tetrablock architecture with a specific set of interaction parameters and compositions leads to the formation of large core-shell spherical domains, which amplifies the effect of interfacial energy and thereby stabilizes the σ phase.

Phase behavior of ABC-type triple-hydrophilic block copolymers in aqueous solutions

The phase behavior of symmetric ABC triple-hydrophilic triblock copolymers in concentrated aqueous solutions is investigated using a simulated annealing technique. Two typical cases, in which the hydrophilicity of the middle B-block is either stronger or weaker than that of the end A- and C-blocks, are studied. In these two cases, a variety of phase diagrams are constructed as a function of the volume fraction of the B-block and the copolymer concentration ([Formula: see text] for both non-frustrated and frustrated copolymers. Structures, such as two-color alternatingly packed cylinders or gyroid, and lamellae-in-lamellae etc. that do not occur in the melt system, are obtained in solutions. Rich phase transition sequences, especially re-entrant phase transitions involving complex continuous networks of alternating gyroid and alternating diamond are observed for a given copolymer with decreasing [Formula: see text] . The difference in hydrophilicity among different blocks can result in inhomogeneous distribution of solvent molecules in the morphology, and with the decrease of [Formula: see text] , the distribution of solvent molecules presents a non-monotonic variation. This results in a non-monotonic variation of the effective volume fraction of each domain with the decrease of [Formula: see text] , which induces the re-entrant phase transitions. The presence of a good solvent for all the blocks can cause changes in the effective segregation strengths between different blocks and also in chain conformations, hence can alter the bulk phases and results in the occurrence of new structures and phase transitions. Especially, structures having A-C interfaces or A-C mixed domains can be obtained even in the non-frustrated copolymer systems, and structures obtained in the frustrated systems may be similar to those obtained in the non-frustrated systems. The window of the alternating gyroid structures may occupy a large part of the phase diagram for non-frustrated copolymers with stronger B-hydrophilicity. This behavior can be used to tune the self-assembled structures of block copolymers.

Cornucopia of Nanoscale Ordered Phases in Sphere-Forming Tetrablock Terpolymers

We report the phase behavior of a series of poly(styrene)-b-poly(isoprene)-b-poly(styrene)'-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (SIS'O) tetrablock terpolymers. This study was motivated by self-consistent field theory (SCFT) calculations that anticipate a rich array of sphere-forming morphologies with variations in the molecular symmetry parameter τ = NS/(NS + NS'), where N is the block degree of polymerization and the volume fraction of O is less than about 0.22. Eight SIS'O samples, with τ ranging from 0.21 to 0.73, were synthesized and investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy, yielding evidence of nine different spherical phases: hexagonal, FCC, HCP, BCC, rhombohedral (tentative), liquid-like packing, dodecagonal quasicrystal, and Frank-Kasper σ and A15 phases. At temperatures close to the order-disorder transition, these tetrablocks behave as pseudo-[SIS']-O diblocks and form equilibrium morphologies mediated by facile chain exchange between micelles. Transition from equilibrium to nonequilibrium behavior occurs at a temperature (Terg) several tens of degrees below the order-disorder transition temperature, speculated to be coincident with the loss of ergodicity, as chain exchange is arrested due to increased segregation strength between the core (O) and corona (SIS') blocks. Nonequilibrium ordered structures form when T < Terg; these are interpreted using SCFT calculations to elucidate the free energy landscape driving ordering in the S and I block matrix. These experiments demonstrate a profound dependence on phase stability with variations in τ and temperature, providing insights into the formation of ordered phase symmetry in this class of asymmetric multiblock polymers.

Formation of Nonclassical Ordered Phases of AB-Type Multiarm Block Copolymers

The formation of ordered phases from block copolymers is driven by a delicate balance between the monomer-monomer interaction and chain configurational entropy. The configurational entropy can be regulated by designed chain architecture, resulting in a new entropy-driven mechanism to control the self-assembly of ordered phases from block copolymers. An effective routine to regulate the configurational entropy is to utilize multiarm architecture, in which the entropic contribution to the free energy could be qualitatively controlled by the fraction of bridging configurations. As an illustration of this mechanism, the phase behavior of two AB-type multiarm block copolymers, B0-(Bi-Ai)m and (B1-Ai-B2)m where the minority A blocks form cylindrical or spherical domains, are examined using the self-consistent field theory (SCFT). The SCFT results demonstrate that the packing symmetry of the cylinders or spheres can be controlled by the length of the bridging B blocks. Several nonclassical ordered phases, including a novel square array cylinder with p4mm symmetry, are predicted to form from the AB-type multiarm block copolymers.

Tunable Affinity and Molecular Architecture Lead to Diverse Self-Assembled Supramolecular Structures in Thin Films

The self-assembly behavior of specifically designed giant surfactants is systematically studied in thin films using grazing incidence X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy, focusing on the effects of molecular nanoparticle (MNP) functionalities and molecular architectures on nanostructure formation. Two MNPs with different surface functionalities, i.e., hydrophilic carboxylic acid functionalized [60]fullerene (AC60) and omniphobic fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (FPOSS), are utilized as the head portions of the giant surfactants. By covalently tethering these functional MNPs onto the end point or junction point of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymer, linear and star-like giant surfactants with different molecular architectures are constructed. With fixed length of the PEO block, changing the molecular weight of the PS block leads to the formation of various ordered phases and phase transitions. Due to the distinct affinity, the AC60-based and FPOSS-based giant surfactants form two- or three-component morphologies, respectively. A stretching parameter for the PS block is introduced to characterize the PS chain conformation in the different morphologies. The highly diverse self-assembled nanostructures with high etch resistance between components in small dimensions obtained from the giant surfactant thin films suggest that these macromolecules could provide a promising and robust platform for nanolithography applications.
