Dielectric Relaxation and Rheological Behavior of Supramolecular Polymeric Liquid

Rheological characterization of complex dynamics in Na-Zn metaphosphate glass-forming liquids

The viscoelastic behavior and shear relaxation in supercooled [NaPO₃]_x[Zn(PO₃)₂]_1-x metaphosphate liquids with 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 1.0 are investigated using a combination of small amplitude oscillatory and steady shear parallel plate rheometry, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results demonstrate that these liquids are thermorheologically complex with the coexistence of a fast and a slow relaxation process, which could be attributed to the segmental motion of the phosphate chains and the Zn-O bond scission/renewal dynamics, respectively. The segmental motion of the phosphate chains is found to be the dominant process associated with the shear relaxation for all metaphosphate liquids. The compositional evolution of the calorimetric fragility of these liquids is shown to be related to the conformational entropy of the constituent phosphate chains, which is manifested by the width of the relaxation time distribution for the segmental chain motion. This entropy decreases and the temporal coupling between the chain dynamics and Zn-O bond scission-renewal increases with the increasing Zn content as the higher field strength Zn modifier ions provide more effective cross-linking between the phosphate chains.

The dielectric response of phenothiazine-based glass-formers with different molecular complexity

We examined a series of structurally related glass-forming liquids in which a phenothiazine-based tricyclic core (PTZ) was modified by attaching n-alkyl chains of different lengths (n = 4, 8, 10). We systematically disentangled the impact of chemical structure modification on the intermolecular organization and molecular dynamics probed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns evidenced that all PTZ-derivatives are not 'ordinary' liquids and form nanoscale clusters. The chain length has a decisive impact on properties, exerting a plasticizing effect on the dynamics. Its elongation decreases glass transition temperature with slight impact on fragility. The increase in the medium-range order was manifested as a broadening of the dielectric loss peak reflected in the lower value of stretching parameter β_KWW. A disagreement with the behavior observed for non-associating liquids was found as a deviation from the anti-correlation between the value of β_KWW and the relaxation strength of the α-process. Besides, to explain the broadening of loss peak in PTZ with the longest (decyl) chain a slow Debye process was postulated. In contrast, the sample with the shortest alkyl chain and a less complex structure with predominant supramolecular assembly through π-π stacking exhibits no clear Debye-mode fingerprints. The possible reasons are also discussed.

Influence of High Pressure on the Local Order and Dynamical Properties of the Selected Azole Antifungals

Dielectric studies under various temperature (T) and pressure (p) conditions on five active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with antifungal properties-itraconazole (ITZ), posaconazole (POS), terconazole (TER), ketoconazole (KET), and fluconazole (FLU)-were carried out. We have thoroughly studied the connection between the pressure coefficient of the glass transition temperature (dT_g/dp) and the activation volume of both relaxation modes (ΔV_α, ΔV_δ/α') with respect to the molecular weight (M_w) or molar volume (V_m) in these systems. Besides, high pressure data revealed that the time scale separation between α- and δ- or α'-processes increases with pressure in ITZ and TER. What is more, the activation entropy, which is a measure of cooperativity, calculated from the Eyring model for the secondary (β)-relaxation in ITZ and POS, increased and decreased, respectively, in the compressed samples. To understand these peculiar results, we have carried out X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on the pressure-densified glasses and found that pressure may induce frustration in molecular organization and destroy the medium-range order while enhancing the short-range correlations between molecules. This finding allowed us to conclude that varying molecular spatial arrangement is responsible for the extraordinary dynamical behavior of ITZ, POS, and TER at high pressure.

Are hydrogen supramolecular structures being suppressed upon nanoscale confinement? The case of monohydroxy alcohols

In this paper, the molecular dynamics, H-bonding pattern and wettability of the primary and secondary monohydroxyalcohols, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (2E1H), 2-ethyl-1-butanol (2E1B) and 5-methyl-3-heptanol (5M3H) infiltrated into native and functionalized silica and alumina pores having pore diameters, d = 4 nm and d = 10 nm, have been studied with the use of Broadband Dielectric (BDS) and Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopies, as well as contact angle measurements. We found significant differences in the behavior of alcohols forming chain- (2E1H, 2E1B) or micelle-like (5M3H) supramolecular structures despite of their similarities in the wettability and interfacial energy. It turned out that nanoassociates as well as H-bonds are more or less affected by the confinement dependently on the chemical structure and alcohol order. Moreover, a peculiar behavior of the self-assemblies at the interface was noted in the latter material (5M3H). Finally, it was found that irrespectively to the sample, type of pores, functionalization, the temperature evolution of Debye relaxation times, τ_D, of the confined systems deviates from the bulk behavior always at similar τ_D due to vitrification of the interfacial layer. This finding is a clear indication that unexpectedly dynamics (mobility) of the supramolecular structures close to the hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces is similar in each system.

A Critical Approach to Polymer Dynamics in Supramolecular Polymers

Over the past few years, the concurrent (1) development of polymer synthesis and (2) introduction of new mathematical models for polymer dynamics have evolved the classical framework for polymer dynamics once established by Doi-Edwards/de Gennes. Although the analysis of supramolecular polymer dynamics based on linear rheology has improved a lot recently, there are a large number of insecurities behind the conclusions, which originate from the complexity of these novel systems. The interdependent effect of supramolecular entities (stickers) and chain dynamics can be overwhelming depending on the type and location of stickers as well as the architecture and chemistry of polymers. This Perspective illustrates these parameters and strives to determine what is still missing and has to be improved in the future works.

Nonlinear electrical and rheological spectroscopies identify structural and supramolecular relaxations in a model peptide

Supercooled liquid secondary amides display an electrical absorption peak characterized by an almost Debye-like shape, indicative of a close-to-exponential polarization response. This response, believed to be supramolecular in nature, is so enormously intense that the amide's structural process, contributing only a few percent to the total relaxation strength, is hard to resolve reliably using standard dielectric spectroscopy. To overcome this issue, nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy involving field-induced structural recovery and temperature-induced physical aging, was applied near the calorimetric glass transition of a mixture of N-methylformamide and N-ethylacetamide. Without the need to rely on cumbersome deconvolution procedures, it is thus demonstrated that the supramolecular response is by a factor of 6 slower than the structural relaxation. Conversely, in linear rheological experiments only the structural relaxation could be resolved, but not the supramolecular one. However, medium-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments carried out at 160 K do reveal the supramolecular process. Hence, the combination of linear and nonlinear mechanical measurements corroborates the dielectrically uncovered spectral separation of the two processes.

Molecular View on Supramolecular Chain and Association Dynamics

The chain and association dynamics of supramolecular polymer ensembles decisively determines their properties. Using neutron spin echo (NSE) spectroscopy we present molecular insight into the space and time evolution of this dynamics. Studying a well characterized ensemble of linearly associating telechelic poly(ethylene glycol) melts carrying triple H-bonding end groups, we show that H-bond breaking significantly impacts the mode spectrum of the associates. The breaking affects the mode contributions and not the relaxation times as was assumed previously. NSE spectra directly reveal the so far intangible H-bond lifetimes in the supramolecular melt and demonstrate that for both the microscopic and the macroscopic dynamics of the supramolecular ensemble the instantaneous average of the M_{w} distribution governs the system response at least as long as the Rouse picture applies.

An asymmetric A-B-A' metallo-supramolecular triblock copolymer linked by Ni(2+)-bis-terpyridine complexes at one junction

A metallo-supramolecular triblock copolymer polystyrene-b-polyisoprene-[Ni(2+)]-polystyrene (SI-[Ni(2+)]-S') has been efficiently prepared using a one-pot, two-step procedure, where the blocks are held by bis-terpyridine complexes at the junction of SI-S'. This specific metallo-supramolecular chemistry is demonstrated to be a robust approach to potentially broaden the diversity of block copolymers. The location of the metal-ligand complexes has a profound influence on the phase separation of the triblock copolymer in the bulk, which results in a distinctive phase segregation between the end blocks and leads to an unexpected asymmetry of the triblock copolymer. The metal-ligand complexes are found to be preferentially located on the adjacent spherical domain and form a core-shell structure. The resulting multiphase material exhibits distinct elastomeric properties with significant toughness and creep recovery behavior. This type of triblock copolymer is anticipated to be a novel class of hybrid thermo-plastic elastomeric material with wide tunability and functionality.

Proton Transport in Imidazoles: Unraveling the Role of Supramolecular Structure

The impact of supramolecular hydrogen bonded networks on dynamics and charge transport in 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (2E4MIm), a model proton-conducting system, is investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy, depolarized dynamic light scattering, viscometry, and calorimetry. It is observed that the slow, Debye-like relaxation reflecting the supramolecular structure in neat 2E4MIm is eliminated upon the addition of minute amounts of levulinic acid. This is attributed to the dissociation of imidazole molecules and the breaking down of hydrogen-bonded chains, which leads to a 10-fold enhancement of ionic conductivity.

Dielectric relaxation of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol around the glass transition by thermally stimulated depolarization currents

We explore new routes for characterizing the Debye-like and α relaxation in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (2E1H) monoalcohol by using low frequency dielectric techniques including thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) techniques and isothermal depolarization current methods. In this way, we have improved the resolution of the overlapped processes making it possible the analysis of the data in terms of a mode composition as expected for a chain-like response. Furthermore the explored ultralow frequencies enabled to study dynamics at relatively low temperatures close to the glass transition (Tg). Results show, on the one hand, that Debye-like and α relaxation timescales dramatically approach to each other upon decreasing temperature to Tg. On the other hand, the analysis of partial polarization TSDC data confirms the single exponential character of the Debye-like relaxation in 2E1H and rules out the presence of Rouse type modes in the scenario of a chain-like response. Finally, on crossing the glass transition, the Debye-like relaxation shows non-equilibrium effects which are further emphasized by aging treatment and would presumably emerge as a result of the arrest of the structural relaxation below Tg.

Compliance of the Stokes-Einstein model and breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye model for a urea-based supramolecular polymer of high viscosity

Impedance spectroscopy was used for the study of the static and dynamic behavior of the electrical conductivity of a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymer of high viscosity. The experimental data are discussed in the frame of the Stokes-Einstein and Stokes-Einstein-Debye models. It was found that the translational movement of the ions is due to normal Brownian diffusion, which was revealed by a fulfillment of Ohm's law by the electric current and a strictly exponential decay of the current after removing the electric stimulus. The dependence of the dc conductivity on the viscosity of the medium fulfills the Stokes-Einstein model quite well. An extension of the model, by including in it the conductivity relaxation time, is proposed in this paper. A breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye model is revealed by the relations of the dipolar relaxation time to the viscosity and to the dc ionic conductivity. The importance of the C=O···H-N hydrogen bonds in that breakdown is discussed.

Supramolecular x-ray signature of susceptibility amplification in hydrogen-bonded liquids

Mixing two nonconducting hydrogen-bonded liquids, each exhibiting a low dielectric relaxation strength, can result in a highly electrically absorbing fluid. This susceptibility amplification effect is demonstrated for mixtures of monohydroxy alcohols. Whereas in the pure liquids a tendency to form ringlike low-dipole moment clusters prevails, in the mixtures such supramolecular structures are disfavored leading to an up to tenfold enhancement of the dielectric loss. The compositional evolution of density and mean cluster-cluster separation is traced using x-ray scattering and indicates deviations from ideal mixing with decreased C-C but simultaneously increased O-O correlation lengths. Thus, the variation in the supramolecular absorption strength could be tracked using a static scattering technique. These observations are in harmony with volume exclusion and ring open effects that predict an optimized susceptibility amplification for mixtures in which the two components occupy equal volume fractions as experimentally observed.

Insights into ordered microstructures and ordering mechanisms of ABC star terpolymers by integrating dynamic self-consistent field theory and variable cell shape methods

A theoretical approach coupling dynamic self-consistent field (SCF) theory for inhomogeneous polymeric fluids and variable cell shape (VCS) method for automatically adjusting cell shape and size is developed to investigate ordered microstructures and the ordering mechanisms of block copolymer melts. Using this simulation method, we first re-examined the microphase separation of the simplest AB diblock copolymers, and tested the validity and efficiency of the novel method by comparing the results with those obtained from the dynamic SCF theory. An appropriate relaxation parameter of the VCS method effectively accelerates the system towards a stable morphology without distortions or defects. The dynamic SCF/VCS method is then applied to identify the richness morphologies of ABC star terpolymers and explore the ordering mechanisms of star terpolymer melts quenched from homogenous states. A diverse range of ordered microstructures, including two-dimensional tiling patterns, hierarchical structures and ordinary microstructures, are predicted. Three types of ordering mechanisms, namely, one-step, quick-slow and step-wise procedures, are discovered in the disorder-to-order transition of ABC star terpolymers. The procedures of microphase separation in the ABC star terpolymer melts are remarkably affected by the composition of star terpolymers and the strength of interaction parameters.

Shear-modulus investigations of monohydroxy alcohols: evidence for a short-chain-polymer rheological response

Liquids composed of small-molecule monohydroxy alcohols are demonstrated to display rheological behavior typical for oligomeric chains. This observation was made possible by rheological experiments in which more than seven decades in frequency and more than five decades on the mechanical modulus scale are covered. The singly hydrogen-bonded monohydroxy alcohols were chosen because they display significant, but surprisingly poorly understood effects of intermolecular association. Based on the present shear study, one can apply theoretical concepts of polymer science to understand the anomalous physical behavior of a wide range of hydrogen-bonded liquids.

Supramolecular self-assembly and photovoltaic property of soluble fluorogallium phthalocyanine

Fluorogallium tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanine (ttbPcGaF) can self-organize into well-ordered cofacial structures to obtain one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular polymers in the solid state using a solution-coating technique. The ttbPcGaF-based BHJ OSC provided a profoundly improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.41%.
