Abstract
Janus particles with different compositions and properties segmented to different regions on the surface of one objector provide more opportunities for interfacial engineering. As a novel interfacial active material, Janus particles integrate the amphiphilic properties of molecular surfactants and the Pickering effect of homogeneous particles. In this research, the outstanding properties of Janus particles on various interfaces are examined from both theoretical and practical perspectives, and the advantages of Janus particles over molecular surfactants and homogeneous particle surfactants are analyzed. We believe that Janus particles are ideal tools for interface regulation and functionalization in the future.

Abstract
Cross-linked epoxy resin (EP) single-hole Janus hollow spheres are prepared by cross-linking induced phase separation within an emulsion droplet and selective modification. The droplet is composed of an EP oligomer, toluene, and hexadecane. 2-Ethyl-4-methylimidazole is used as the cross-linker added to the aqueous phase. During the cross-linking, hexadecane forms an eccentric core in the cross-linked EP sphere. A single hole forms across the shell after dissolving the solvents, and a single-hole hollow sphere is achieved. The hole and cavity size are controlled by adjusting the solvent content and cross-linker concentration. Furthermore, frozen wax is used as the core material instead of hexadecane to effectively protect the sphere's interior surface. Selective modification of the exterior and interior surfaces is thus permitted. As an example, a responsive single-hole Janus hollow sphere is prepared by the favorable growth of a silica-polyoxyethylene composite layer onto the exterior surface and a selective grafting of poly(2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) onto the interior. The Janus sphere is water-dispersible and controllably captures and releases oil from the aqueous environment as triggered by the pH value.

Abstract
Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) refer to the integration of two or more chemically discrepant composites into one structure system. Studies into JNPs have been of significant interest due to their interesting characteristics stemming from their asymmetric structures, which can integrate different functional properties and perform more synergetic functions simultaneously. Herein, we present recent progress of Janus particles, comprehensively detailing fabrication strategies and applications. First, the classification of JNPs is divided into three blocks, consisting of polymeric composites, inorganic composites, and hybrid polymeric/inorganic JNPs composites. Then, the fabrication strategies are alternately summarized, examining self-assembly strategy, phase separation strategy, seed-mediated polymerization, microfluidic preparation strategy, nucleation growth methods, and masking methods. Finally, various intriguing applications of JNPs are presented, including solid surfactants agents, micro/nanomotors, and biomedical applications such as biosensing, controlled drug delivery, bioimaging, cancer therapy, and combined theranostics. Furthermore, challenges and future works in this field are provided.

Abstract
A robust thermo-responsive polymeric Janus cage with a PNIPAM-cPVBC-PEO sandwiched shell is synthesized. The Janus cage provides a general method of thermally triggered separation of oil/water emulsions independent of the type of surfactant and emulsion. It can selectively capture organic compounds at a higher temperature and release them at a lower temperature.

Abstract
The one-pot synthesis of hybrid hollow nanoparticles of symmetric and asymmetric shapes is a challenging task and has rarely been reported. This work proposes a method for a high-yield synthesis of hybrid hollow carbon particles. In the first step, hexadecane/styrene (HD/St) is encapsulated in a silica shell. Then, by the polymerization of St, a silica/polystyrene double shell is formed. Finally, hollow carbon particles with bowl-like and crumpled shapes are obtained by carbonization. The results show that the ratio of diameter to thickness (D/H) for obtaining crumpled particles is ∼4-12, whereas this ratio is ∼7-18 for bowl-like particles. We study the effects of HD and St concentrations on the D/H ratio and the composition of hybrid particles. In contrast to suspensions of hollow carbon spheres, the suspensions of hybrid nanoparticles show shear-thinning behavior over the examined range of shear rates, which is attributed to their enhanced packing. The shape effect of hybrid particles also increases their adsorption on human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) compared to the hollow carbon spheres.

Abstract
Effective synthesis of anisotropic nano-/microparticles (APs) by the copolymers is of great significance in nanomaterials and nanotechnology. However, achieving regulation of the morphology, composition, property, and particle size of anisotropic nano-/microparticles (APs) with diversified copolymers is difficult due to complex mechanism and formation conditions. In this work, a versatile one-pot solvent-mediated self-assembly (SmSa) strategy had been proposed for the facile one-pot synthesis of shape-tunable anisotropic nano-/microparticles (StAPs). In addition, the formation mechanism of StAPs was determined through numerous characterization methods related to morphology and element distribution. The results revealed that the anisotropic architectures of StAPs were closely related to the nature of poly(methylacrylic acid-methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) (L1) and poly(butyl acrylate-styrene) (L2) polymer chains imparted by polymer blocks of different domains. Therefore, the ordered assembly of the rigid and hydrophobic L2 polymer chains in micelles consisting of the flexible and amphiphilic L1 and solvent could be successfully carried out under the mediation of increasing solvent polarity and the strong adsorption of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) for L2. Furthermore, the developed versatile SmSa strategy and the obtained StAPs play an essential role in the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Particularly given its adjustable emulsifying properties at different pH values, as well as numerous sites for further modification by fluorescent or other components, it can be employed to synthesize a wide range of functional materials.

Abstract
Janus particles (JPs) have attracted increasing attention from the communities of materials science, chemistry, physics, and biology. However, the nanoscale JPs that can switch shapes in response to an environmental stimulus is a significant challenge. In this article, we have demonstrated a simple procedure to fabricate the amphipathic Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) composed of hydrophilic body and hydrophobic lobe via using sudden negative pressure technique. Moreover, in response to temperature, the nanoparticles can recover to their initial nanosphere state by a switchable process, showing promising shape memory effect. Here, we can monitor the switchable nanostructures with hydrophilic and hydrophobic changes in the shape memory process of the JNPs by transmission electron microscope, dynamic light scattering, and water contact angle. Furthermore, we successfully compare the differences in shape deformation ratio and shape recovery ratio using the three test methods by the statistical analysis of Student's t-test for independent samples. In addition, we also develop hybrid magnetic Janus nanoparticles, changed from the amphipathic JNPs by the selective attachment of magnetic nanoparticles with hydrophobic molecules, which show new Janus nanostructure and shape memory property.

Abstract
Janus colloids are functional particles consisting of two surfaces (or internal materials) with distinct physical or chemical properties in the same particle. Owing to their amphiphilic nature, Janus colloids composed of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic faces provide a powerful tool to generate functional surfaces and to manipulate the properties of interfaces. Amphiphilic Janus colloids have shown promising applications as particulate surfactants in oil/water separation, as interfacial compatibilizers in polymer blends, and as assembly blocks in robust coatings with unique wettability. In this Feature Article, we summarize recent advances in engineering interfaces by using Janus colloids.

Abstract
Magnetic-fluorescent bifunctional materials have received global attention owing to their potential in many fields. Herein, we reported a novel magnetic-fluorescent bifunctional Janus nanofiber membrane (NFM) by adding the as-prepared magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) side (m-PAN) and the fluorescent molecules of 1,8-naphthalene anhydride (1,8-NAD) into the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) side (f-PVP) via electrospinning method. The obtained m-PAN/f-PVP Janus NFM exhibited excellent magnetic performance and high fluorescent properties due to the unique structure. Compared with the m-PAN/f-PVP composite NFM, the Janus NFM showed higher fluorescent performance because the fluorescent molecules were isolated from the magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, the Janus NFM not only maintain the good self-supporting state in water but also realize a directional movement attracted by a magnet. The unique structure of Janus nanofiber is of great importance and demonstrates great potential applications.

Abstract
The polymer/inorganic composite trilayered Janus mesoporous nanodiscs are synthesized by coassembly of gelable poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(3-triethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PTEPM-b-PS) and PEO-b-PS via a sol-gel process at an emulsion interface. Bimodal phase separations are responsible for the formation of isolated nanodiscs and mesopores within the discs. The Janus mesoporous nanodiscs are amphiphilic to form superstructures in dispersions. They can serve as a solid surfactant to stabilize emulsions.

Abstract
A Janus porous sphere with a coral-like microstructure is prepared by stepwise dealloying a metallic alloy sphere and sequential modification (for example, using silanes and polymers). Nanoscale coral-like microstructure of the internal skeleton gives remarkable capillary force, thus accelerating the mass transportation. Starting from the outer layer of the sphere, stepwise dealloying can achieve different layers inwardly, thus introducing different composition and performance. As an example, poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PEG-PNIPAM)- and poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(N,N-diethylamino-2-ethylmethacrylate) (PEG-PDEAEMA)-responsive Janus porous spheres can quickly capture oil by simply changing temperature or pH. Similarly, release is also triggered.

Abstract
The platelet-shaped Janus nanocages with a mesoporous silica shell are prepared. PEG moiety onto the exterior surface is responsible for good dispersity in water. The graphene sheet inside the cavity is responsible for hydrophobic performance to selectively capture hydrophobic species, and photothermal effect by NIR irradiation. As a biocompatible DOX-loaded Janus platelet delivery, HeLa cell cytotoxicity is greatly enhanced under NIR irradiation. There exists a synergetic effect between the chemotherapy and photothermal therapy.

Abstract
Janus composites with two different components divided on the same object have gained growing interest in many fields, such as solid emulsion stabilizers, sensors, optical probes and self-propellers. Over the past twenty years, various synthesis methods have been developed including Pickering emulsion interfacial modification, block copolymer self-assembly, microfluidics, electro co-jetting, and swelling emulsion polymerization. Anisotropic shape and asymmetric spatial distribution of compositions and functionalities determine their unique performances. Rational design and large scale synthesis of functional Janus materials are crucial for the systematical characterization of performance and exploitation of practical applications.
