Role of the Comonomeric Units in Reaching Linear Backbone, High Solid-State Order and Charge Mobilities in Heptacyclic Arene-Based Alternating Copolymers

Enhanced N-type Semiconducting Performance of Asymmetric Monochlorinated Isoindigo-based Semiregioregular Polymers under Dynamic Forces

The asymmetric monochlorination strategy not only effectively addresses the steric issues in conventional dichlorination but also enables the development of promising acceptor units and semiregioregular polymers. Herein, monochlorinated isoindigo (1CIID) is successfully designed and synthesized by selectively introducing single chlorine (Cl) atoms. Furthermore, the 1CIID copolymerizes with two donor counterparts, centrosymmetric 2,2'-bithiophene (2T) and axisymmetric 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT), forming two polymers, P1CIID-2T and P1CIID-DTBT. These polymers exhibit notable differences in backbone linearity and dipole moments, influenced by the symmetry of their donor counterparts. In particular, P1CIID-2T, which contains a centrosymmetric 2T unit, demonstrates a linear backbone and a significant dipole moment of 10.20 D. These properties contribute to the favorable film morphology of P1CIID-2T, characterized by highly ordered crystallinity in the presence of fifth-order (500) X-ray diffraction peaks. Notably, P1CIID-2T exhibits a significant improvement in molecular alignment under dynamic force, resulting in over 8-fold improvement in the performance of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices, with superior electron mobility up to 1.22 cm2 V-1 s-1. This study represents the first synthesis of asymmetric monochlorinated isoindigo-based conjugated polymers, highlighting the potential of asymmetric monochlorination for developing n-type semiconducting polymers. Moreover, our findings provide valuable insights into the relationship between the molecular structure and properties.

Crucial Role of Fluorine in Fully Alkylated Ladder-Type Carbazole-Based Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells

Two fused ladder-type nonfullerene acceptors, DTCCIC and DTCCIC-4F, based on an electron-donating alkylated dithienocyclopentacarbazole core flanked by electron-withdrawing nonfluorinated or fluorinated 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (IC or IC-4F), are prepared and utilized in organic solar cells (OSCs). The two new molecules reveal planar structures and strong aggregation behavior, and fluorination is shown to red-shift the optical band gap and downshift energy levels. OSCs based on DTCCIC-4F exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 12.6%, much higher than that of DTCCIC-based devices (6.2%). Microstructural studies reveal that while both acceptors are highly crystalline, bulk heterojunction blends based on the nonfluorinated DTCCIC result in overly coarse domains, while blends based on the fluorinated DTCCIC-4F exhibit a more optimal nanoscale morphology. These results highlight the importance of end group fluorination in controlling molecular aggregation and miscibility.

Simplified synthetic routes for low cost and high photovoltaic performance n-type organic semiconductor acceptors

The application of polymer solar cells (PSCs) with n-type organic semiconductor as acceptor requires further improving powder conversion efficiency, increasing stability and decreasing cost of the related materials and devices. Here we report a simplified synthetic route for 4,4,9,9-tetrahexyl-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno [1,2-b:5,6-b'] dithiophene by using the catalyst of amberlyst15. Based on this synthetic route and methoxy substitution, two low cost acceptors with less synthetic steps, simple post-treatment and high yield were synthesized. In addition, the methoxy substitution improves both yield and efficiency. The high efficiency of 13.46% was obtained for the devices with MO-IDIC-2F (3,9-bis(2-methylene-5 or 6-fluoro-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone)-4,4,9,9-tetrahexyl-5,10-dimethoxyl-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b'] dithiophene) as acceptor. Based on the cost analysis, the PSCs based on MO-IDIC-2F possess the great advantages of low cost and high photovoltaic performance in comparison with those PSCs reported in literatures. Therefore, MO-IDIC-2F will be a promising low cost acceptor for commercial application of PSCs.

Electropolymerization of thienyl tethered comonomers and application towards the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrobenzene

The synthesis of different π-spacered thiophene comonomers via Suzuki cross-coupling in good synthetic yields was accomplished. Potentiodynamic electropolymerization of these precursors on ITO electrode by constant potential electrolysis results in the deposition of thin films of polymers between 0.05 and 0.2 μM. Interestingly, the as synthesized π-conjugated polymers exhibit electrochromic behaviour upon electrochemical oxidation. On the application side, the synthesized electropolymers showed catalytic activity better than glassy carbon towards electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene.

Novel D-A-π-A-Type Organic Dyes Containing a Ladderlike Dithienocyclopentacarbazole Donor for Effective Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

A novel ladderlike fused-ring donor, dithienocyclopentacarbazole (DTCC) derivative, is used to design and synthesize three novel donor-acceptor-π-acceptor-type organic dyes (C1-C3) via facile direct arylation reactions, in which the DTCC derivative substituted by four p-octyloxyphenyl groups is served as the electron donor and the carboxylic acid group is used as the electron acceptor or anchoring group. To fine-tune the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the three dyes, various auxiliary acceptors, including benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole (BT), 5,6-difluorobenzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole (DFBT), and pyridal[2,1,3]thiadiazole (PT), are incorporated into the dye backbones. The results indicate that all of the three dyes exhibit strong light-capturing ability in the visible region and obtain relatively high molar extinction coefficients (>31 000 M^-1 cm^-1) due to their strong charge transfer (CT) from donor to acceptor. Moreover, theoretical model calculations demonstrate fully separated highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels for the three dyes, which is helpful for efficient charge separation and electron injection. Using the three dyes as sensitizers, conventional dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on liquid iodide/triiodide redox electrolytes are fabricated. Our results indicate that the BT-containing dye C1 affords the highest power conversion efficiency of up to 6.75%, much higher than that of the DFBT-containing dye C2 (5.40%) and the PT-containing dye C3 (1.85%). To our knowledge, this is the first example reported in the literature where the DTCC unit has been used to develop novel organic dyes for DSSC applications. Our work unambiguously demonstrates that the ladderlike DTCC derivatives are the superb electron-donating blocks for the development of high-performance organic dyes.
