Molecular Nanoparticles Are Unique Elements for Macromolecular Science: From “Nanoatoms” to Giant Molecules

Phenyl-Substituted Cage Silsesquioxane-Based Star-Shaped Giant Molecular Clusters: Synthesis, Properties, and Surface Segregation Behavior

The crystallinity, solubility, and physical properties of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) compounds are highly dependent on their organic substituents. We previously synthesized a series of isobutyl-substituted star-shaped POSS derivatives with aliphatic chain linkers of different length. In this study, we prepared C3- and C6-linked phenyl-substituted star-shaped POSS derivatives (3Ph-C3 and 3Ph-C6) by the hydrosilylation of heptaphenylallyl- and hexenyl-POSS (1a and 1b) and octadimethylsiloxy-Q8-silsesquioxane (Q8M8H) (2), respectively, and their properties were compared with those of the corresponding isobutyl-substituted derivatives (5iBu-C3 and 5iBu-C6). Although 3Ph-C6 was only soluble in chloroform and insoluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and toluene, 3Ph-C3 was soluble even in THF and toluene, suggesting that the shorter linkers of the derivative afford a wider range of solvents for dissolution. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that 3Ph-C3 exhibited a baseline shift at 190 °C and an endothermic peak at 316 °C. However, no clear baseline shift was observed for 3Ph-C6. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the shorter linker in the phenyl-substituted star-shaped POSS derivative significantly increased the decomposition temperature compared with the longer linker. The annealed cast film of 3Ph-C3 at 340 °C above its melting temperature formed a transparent film even after cooling to room temperature. However, an opaque whitish film was formed in the case of 3Ph-C6. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films containing 2 wt % 3Ph-C3 and 3Ph-C6 were prepared by casting their chloroform solutions onto glass substrates overnight at room temperature. The static water contact angle measurements and XPS analysis for the castings film containing 3Ph-C3 and 3Ph-C6 suggested that degree of the segregation amount of 3Ph-C3 was larger than that of 3Ph-C6. The shorter linker length in the phenyl-substituted star-shaped POSS derivative, 3Ph-C3, with its greater predicted solubility in PMMA, exhibited entropy-driven surface segregation.

Cage-rearranged and cage-intact syntheses of azido-functionalized larger T10 and T12 POSSs

Herein, we investigate the product type and distribution during the synthesis of azido-functionalized larger polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) using 3-chloropropyl- and chloromethyldimethylsilylethyl-functionalized T8, T10, and T12 POSSs as precursors. Our findings indicate that cage rearrangement occurs for the 3-chloropropyl-functionalized POSS cages with a stability order of T12 > T10 > T8, while the chloromethyldimethylsilylethyl-functionalized POSS cages remain structurally intact after the nucleophilic substitution.

High-Performance Polyurea Improved by Reactive Nanocluster for Antibiofouling

Polyurea has found applications in protective coatings. Yet, the too fast polymerization and lack of functions limit its application. Herein, we report a high-performance polyurea via the stepwise polymerization of an isocyanate (NCO)-terminated prepolymer consisting of poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol) (PPG-b-PEG-b-PPG) with a nanocluster synthesized via the hydrolysis of N-phenylaminomethyltriethoxysilane. Such a nanocluster contains low-reactivity secondary amines, so the polymerization of polyurea can be slowed down (over 1 h), which improves its wetting and adhesion to a substrate. The residual silanol groups on the nanocluster further increase the adhesion. Such polyurea exhibits high adhesion on various substrates, including glass, ceramic, steel, copper, titanium, wood, and natural rubber (∼2.35-14.64 MPa). Besides, the nanoclusters can cross-link the prepolymer into a tough network, endowing the polyurea with a high mechanical strength of ∼25 MPa, much higher than the traditional polyaspartic ester polyurea. On the other hand, the PEG segments enable the polyurea to have good fouling resistance against proteins (fibrinogen absorption was reduced by over 90%), bacteria (RBA of S. aureusE. coli and Pseudomonas sp. was less than 10%), as well as diatom (diatom density was less than 100 cells/mm2). The polyurea is expected to find applications in biomedical engineering and marine antifouling.

Exploration of Molecular Nanoparticles as Soft Structural Materials and Their Structure-Property Relationship

The search for alternative chemical systems other than polymers with chain topologies for soft structural materials raises general interests in fundamental materials and chemical sciences. It is also appealing from an engineering perspective for the urgent need to resolve the typical trade-offs of polymer systems. Herein, a subnanometer molecular cluster, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, is assembled into molecular nanoparticles (MNPs) with star topology. Broadly tunable viscoelasticity can be realized by fine-tuning the MNPs' deformability. Being analogous to polymeric systems, the hierarchical structural relaxation dynamics can be observed, and their relaxation time and temperature dependence are dominated by the linker flexibilities. This not only provides microscopic understanding on MNP's unique viscoelasticity but also offers enormous opportunities for modulating their mechanical properties via linker engineering. Our work proves the possibility of applying structural units with particle topologies for the design of soft structural materials.

Trehalose-polyamine/DNA nanocomplexes: impact of vector architecture on cell and organ transfection selectivity

A novel family of precision-engineered gene vectors with well-defined structures built on trehalose and trehalose-based macrocycles (cyclotrehalans) comprising linear or cyclic polyamine heads have been synthesized through procedures that exploit click chemistry reactions. The strategy was conceived to enable systematic structural variations and, at the same time, ensuring that enantiomerically pure vectors are obtained. Notably, changes in the molecular architecture translated into topological differences at the nanoscale upon co-assembly with plasmid DNA, especially regarding the presence of regions with short- or long-range internal order as observed by TEM. In vitro and in vivo experiments further evidenced a significant impact on cell and organ transfection selectivity. Altogether, the results highlight the potential of trehalose-polyamine/pDNA nanocomplex monoformulations to achieve targeting transfection without the need for any additional cell- or organ-sorting component.

Unique Viscoelasticity and Hierarchical Relaxation Dynamics of Molecular Granular Materials

Resulting from the dense packing of subnanometer molecular clusters, molecular granular materials (MGMs) are shown to maintain high elasticity far above their apparent glass transition temperature (Tg*). However, our microscopic understanding of their structure-property relationship is still poor. Herein, 1 nm polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) are appended to a backbone chain in a brush configuration with different flexible linker chains. Assemblies of these brush polymers exhibit hierarchical relaxation dynamics with the glass transition arising from the cooperative dynamics of packed POSSs. The interaction among the assemblies can be strengthened by increasing the rigidity of linkers with the MGM relaxation modes changing from colloid- to polymer chain-like behavior, rendering their tunable viscoelasticity. This finally contributes to the decoupling of mechanical and thermal properties by showing elasticity dominant mechanical properties at a temperature 150 K above the Tg*.

Interfacial Behaviors of Giant Amphiphilic Molecules Composed of Hydrophobic Isobutyl POSS and Hydrophilic POSS Bearing Carboxylic Acid Groups at the Air-Water Interface

The behavior of giant amphiphilic molecules at the air-water interface has become a subject of concern to researchers. Small changes in the molecular structure can cause obvious differences in the molecular arrangement and interfacial properties of the monolayer. In this study, we have systematically investigated the interfacial behaviors of the giant amphiphilic molecules with different number of hydrophobic BPOSS blocks and one hydrophilic ACPOSS block ((BPOSS)n-ACPOSS (n = 1-5)) at the air-water interface by the surface pressure-area (π-A) isotherm, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), compression modulus measurement, and hysteresis measurement. We found that both the number of BPOSS blocks and the compression rate can significantly influence the interfacial behaviors of giant molecules. The π-A isotherms of giant molecules (BPOSS)n-ACPOSS (n = 2-5) exhibit a "cusp" phenomenon which can be attributed to the transition from monolayer to multilayer. However, the cusp is dramatically different from the "collapse" of the monolayer studied in other molecular systems, which is highly dependent on the compression rate of the monolayer. In addition, the compression modulus and hysteresis measurements reveal that the number of BPOSS blocks of (BPOSS)n-ACPOSS plays an important role in the static elasticity, stability, and reversibility of the Langmuir films.

Multi-Stimuli-Responsive Nanoparticles Formed of POSS-PEG for the Delivery of Boronic Acid-Containing Therapeutics

Polymeric vehicles often exhibit batch-to-batch variations due to polydispersity, limiting their reproducibility for biomedical applications. In contrast, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) has emerged as an attractive candidate for drug delivery due to its precise chemical structure and rigid molecular shape. A promising strategy to enhance drug efficacy while reducing systemic toxicity is the development of multi-stimuli-responsive delivery systems capable of targeted drug release at a disease site. Herein, we developed a drug delivery platform based on POSS-polymer conjugates. By functionalizing the POSS with amino groups and establishing B-N coordination with boronic acids, the nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit responsive behavior to stimuli, including adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP), acidic pH, and nucleophilic reagents. We successfully encapsulated two boronic acid-containing molecules: tetraphenylethylene (TPE), serving as a fluorescent probe, and bortezomib (BTZ), an anticancer drug. The TPE@NPs were employed to visualize the cellular uptake of NPs by tumor cells, while the BTZ@NPs exhibited increased cytotoxicity in tumor cells compared with normal cells. This POSS-PEG conjugate offers a nanoparticle platform for encapsulating versatile boronic acid-containing molecules, thereby enhancing drug efficacy while minimizing systemic toxicity. Given the wide-ranging applications of boronic acid-containing molecules in biomedicine, our platform holds significant promise for the development of intelligent drug delivery systems for diagnostics and therapeutics.

A Thiol-Michael Approach Towards Versatile Functionalized Cyclic Titanium-Oxo Clusters

In expanding our research activities of superlattice engineering, designing new giant molecules is the necessary first step. One attempt is to use inorganic transition metal clusters as building blocks. Efficient functionalization of chemically precise transition metal clusters, however, remains a great challenge to material scientists. Herein, we report an efficient thiol-Michael addition approach for the modifications of cyclic titanium-oxo cluster (CTOC). Several advantages, including high efficiency, mild reaction condition, capability of complete addition, high atom economy, as well as high functional group tolerance were demonstrated. This approach can afford high yields of fully functionalized CTOCs, which provides a powerful platform for achieving versatile functionalization of precise transition metal clusters and further applications.

Recent Trends in Macromolecule-Based Approaches for Hair Loss Treatment

Macromolecules are large, complex molecules composed of smaller subunits known as monomers. The four primary categories of macromolecules found in living organisms are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids; they also encompass a broad range of natural and synthetic polymers. Recent studies have shown that biologically active macromolecules can help regenerate hair, providing a potential solution for current hair regeneration therapies. This review examines the latest developments in the use of macromolecules for the treatment of hair loss. The fundamental principles of hair follicle (HF) morphogenesis, hair shaft (HS) development, hair cycle regulation, and alopecia have been introduced. Microneedle (MN) and nanoparticle (NP) delivery systems are innovative treatments for hair loss. Additionally, the application of macromolecule-based tissue-engineered scaffolds for the in vitro and in vivo neogenesis of HFs is discussed. Furthermore, a new research direction is explored wherein artificial skin platforms are adopted as a promising screening method for hair loss treatment drugs. Through these multifaceted approaches, promising aspects of macromolecules for future hair loss treatments are identified.

Solution Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Tadpole-like Giant Molecules Constructed by Monotethering Diblock Copolymer Chain onto a Nanoparticle

The self-assembly behavior of a tadpole-like giant molecule (TGM) constructed from a hydrophobic nanoparticle (NP) monotethered by a single amphiphilic AB diblock copolymer chain was investigated by combining self-consistent field theory and density functional theory in solution. The effects of the hydrophobicities of the B blocks and NPs (i.e., solvent properties) on the self-assembly behavior of the TGMs were investigated in the cases of weak and strong intramolecular interactions (i.e., incompatibilities) between the components of giant molecules, respectively. Besides conventional ordered aggregates (such as spheres, rings, and vesicles) with hydrophobic B-cores covered by NP shells, several aggregates with novel hierarchical structures, including vesicles with NP-inserted hydrophobic walls, bead-string-like micelles, and long cylindrical micelles with NP bumps, were obtained by tuning the solvent properties under different intramolecular interactions. Noteworthy that the simulation results show that the arrangement of the NP bumps on the long cylindrical micelles may have a certain degree of helicity, which means that these micelles may have some unique electromagnetic features such as circular dichroism. Phase diagrams as a function of the hydrophobicities of the B blocks and NPs were constructed to show the formation conditions of these novel structures. These findings can not only offer new insights into understanding of the self-assembly behavior of the TGM in solution but also provide useful guidance for simple and efficient regulation of the morphology, as well as the NP distribution and arrangement of the ordered aggregates in experiments.

Functional Molecular Granular Materials: Advances and Perspectives

Molecular granular materials (MGMs) are constructed with sub-nanoscale molecular clusters (MCs) as the building units and they have recently been observed to possess enriched functionalities distinct from granular materials of colloid nanoparticles. Herein, the birth and recent research advances in MGMs are summarized with the topics covering the precise synthesis of MC assemblies with target topologies, the hierarchical relaxation dynamics and tuneable viscoelasticity, impact-resistant capacity, and proton conductivity performance. The extremely small size of MC renders them two features: bulk diffusive dynamics with energy scale close to thermal fluctuation energy and the dominant volume fraction of surface structures. This finally leads to the hierarchical relaxation dynamics and broadly tuneable viscoelasticity of MGMs although the structural units are with small sizes and low M_w . Therefore, MGMs have been applied as impact resistant materials and proton conductors for the highly tuneable relaxation dynamics.

Hydrogen Bonded Foldamers with Axial Chirality: Chiroptical Properties and Applications

Folding phenomenon refers to the formation of a specific conformation widely featured by the intramolecular interactions, which broadly exist in biomacromolecules, and are closely related to their structures and functions. A variety of oligomeric folded molecules have been designed and synthesized, namely "foldamer", exhibiting potentials in pharmaceutical and catalysis. Molecular folding is a promising strategy to transfer chirality from substituents to the whole skeleton, when chirality transfer, amplification, evolution, and other behaviors could be achieved. Investigating chirality using foldamer model deepens the understanding of the structure-function correlation in biomacromolecules and expands the molecular toolbox towards chiroptical and asymmetrical chemistry. Substitutes with abundant hydrogen bonding sites conjugated to a rotatable aryl group afford a parallel β-sheet-like conformation, which enables the emergence and manipulation of axial chirality. This concept aims to give a brief introduction and summary of the hydrogen bonded foldamers with anchored axial chirality, by taking some recent cases as examples. Design principles, control over axial chirality and applications are also reviewed.

Regioisomeric Giant Triblock Molecules: Role of the Linker

In this study, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) based giant triblock molecules with precisely defined regio-configuration are modularly prepared through highly efficient coupling reactions. The length of the linker connecting neighboring nanoparticles is elaborately designed to regulate the geometric constraints. The triblock molecules adopt a folded packing during phase separation, and the regio-configuration imparts direct influence on the self-assembly behaviors. The ortho-isomers form periodic structures with a larger domain size, larger interfacial curvature, and enhanced phase stability. The regio-effect is closely related to the length and symmetry of the linker. As the linker extends, the neighboring particles gradually decouple, and the regio-effect diminishes. The symmetry of the linker shows an even more profound impact. This work quantitatively scrutinized the role of the linker, opening an avenue for engineering the assembled structures with molecular precision.

ABC-Type, Bola-Form Giant Surfactants: Synthesis and Self-Assembly

Due to the fast phase separation kinetics and small feature size, the self-assembly of giant molecules has attracted lots of attention. However, there is not much study on multicomponent giant surfactants. In this work, through a modular synthetic strategy, different polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based molecular nanoparticles are installed with diverse functionalities (hydrophobic octavinyl POSS (VPOSS), hydrophilic dihydroxyl-functionalized POSS (DPOSS), and omniphobic perfluoroalkyl-chain-functionalized POSS (FPOSS)) on the ends of one polystyrene (PS) chain to build up a series of triblock bola-form giant surfactants denoted as XPOSS-PS_n -FPOSS (X represents V or D). The target molecules are prepared by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), esterification, as well as Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and thiol-ene "click" reactions. These macromolecules are thoroughly characterized by combined technologies including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analyses. It is revealed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that VPOSS-PS_n -FPOSS adopts a two-phase separation scenario where VPOSS and POSS are segregated in one phase. DPOSS-PS_n -FPOSS with a third hydrophilic DPOSS shows a three-phase separation scenario, where highly ordered phase structures are difficult to develop owing to the competition of mutual phase separation processes and may be trapped in kinetically metastable states.

Solvent-Free Templated Synthesis of Core-Crosslinked Star-Shaped Polymers in Supramolecular Body-Centered Cubic Phase

This study reports the exploration of a solvent-free supramolecular templated synthesis strategy toward highly core-cross-linked star-shaped polymers (CSPs). To achieve this, a kind of cross-linkable giant surfactant, based on a functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) head tethered with a diblock copolymer tail containing reactive benzocyclobutene groups, is designed and prepared. By varying the volume fraction of linear block copolymer tail, these giant surfactants can self-assemble into a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure in bulk, in which the supramolecular spheres are composed of a core of POSS cages, a middle shell of crosslinkable poly(4-vinylbenzocyclobutene) (PBCB) blocks, and a corona of inert polystyrene (PS) blocks. The solvent-free thermally induced cross-linking reaction of the benzocyclobutene groups can be finished in 5 min upon heating, resulting in well-defined polymeric spheres with over 90 linear chains surrounding the cross-linked cores. The outer PS blocks serve as the protection corona to ensure that cross-linking of giant surfactants occurs in each supramolecular spherical domain. Given the modular design and diversity of the POSS-based giant surfactants, it is believed that the strategy may enable access to a wide range of CSPs.

Click Chemistry: A Promising Tool for Building Hierarchical Structures

The hierarchical structures are utilized at different levels in nature. Moreover, a wide spectrum of nature’s properties (e.g., mechanical, physical and biological properties) has been attributed to this hierarchy. Different reviews have been published to cover the use of click chemistry in building hierarchical structures. However, each one of those reviews focused on a narrow area on this topic, i.e., specific chemical reaction, such as in thiol-ene chemistry, or a specific molecule or compound such as polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, or a certain range of hierarchical structures between the nano to micro range, e.g., nanocrystals. In this review, a frame to connect the dots between the different published works has been demonstrated. This article will not attempt to give an exhaustive review of all the published work in the field, instead the potential of click chemistry to build hierarchical structures of different levels using building blocks of different length scales has been shown through two main approaches. The first is a one-step direct formation of 3D micro/macrometer dimensions structures from Pico dimensions structures (molecules, monomers, etc.). The second approach includes several steps Pico ➔ 0D nano ➔ 1D nano ➔ 2D nano ➔ 3D nano/micro/macro dimensions structures. Another purpose of this review article is to connect between (a) the atomic theory, which covers the atoms and molecules in the picometer dimensions (picoscopic chemistry set); (b) “nano-periodic system” model, which covers different nanobuilding blocks in the nanometers range such as nanoparticles, dendrimers, buckyball, etc. which was developed by Tomalia; and (c) the micro/macrometer dimensions level.

Nanopolymers for magnetic applications: how to choose the architecture?

Directional assembly of nanoscale objects results in morphologies that can broadly be classified as supra-molecular nanopolymers. Such morphologies, given a functional choice of the monomers used as building blocks, can be of ubiquitous utility in optical, magnetic, rheological, and medical applications. These applications, however, require a profound understanding of the interplay between monomer shape and bonding on one side, and polymeric properties - on the other. Recently, we fabricated nanopolymers using cuboid DNA nanochambers, as they not only allow fine-tuning of the resulting morphologies but can also carry magnetic nanoparticles. However, it is not known if the cuboid shape and inter-cuboid connectivity restrict the equilibrium confirmations of the resulting nanopolymers, making them less responsive to external stimuli. In this work, using Molecular Dynamics simulations, we perform an extensive comparison between various nanopolymer architectures to explore their polymeric properties, and their response to an applied magnetic field if magnetic nanoparticles are embedded. We explain the impact of monomer shape and bonding on the mechanical and magnetic properties and show that DNA nanochambers can build highly responsive and magnetically controllable nanopolymers.

Topological Interaction among Molecular Cluster Assemblies Affords Tunable Viscoelasticity

In the assemblies of subnanoscale polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, topological interaction makes the dominant contribution to their viscoelasticity with broad tunability. The assembly molecules are designed with dumbbell, triangular, and tetrahedral shapes, and they demonstrate an intrinsic glassy feature with neither long-range ordering nor supramolecular assembly formation in their bulk. Their viscoelasticity can be broadly tuned through the tailoring of molecular topologies, while the trimer and tetramer assemblies afford elastic moduli comparable to those of rubbers (∼0.5 MPa) even 80 K above their glass transition temperatures. Molecular dynamics studies reveal the topological constraints resulting from the topology-disrupted cooperative dynamics among the cluster assemblies, and this finally leads to the typical caging dynamics of the structural units and the elasticity of the bulk materials. Further broadband dielectric spectroscopy studies uncover the unique hierarchical relaxation dynamics, inspiring the strategy for the decoupling of mechanical strengths and toughness for the design of impact resistant materials.

Progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrids

This Review describes recent progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic POSS hybrids derived from mono-, di-, and multi-functionalized POSS cages. We highlight the self-assembled structures and physical properties of giant surfactants and chain-end- and side-chain-type hybrids derived from mono-functionalized POSS cages; main-chain-type hybrids derived from di-functionalized POSS cages; and star-shaped hybrids derived from multi-functionalized POSS cages; with various polymeric attachments, including polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), phenolic, PVPh, and polypeptides.

The Use of the Thiol-Ene Addition Click Reaction in the Chemistry of Organosilicon Compounds: An Alternative or a Supplement to the Classical Hydrosilylation?

This review presents the main achievements in the use of the thiol-ene reaction in the chemistry of silicones. Works are considered, starting from monomers and ending with materials.The main advantages and disadvantages of this reaction are demonstrated using various examples. A critical analysis of the use of this reaction is made in comparison with the hydrosilylation reaction.

Connecting Molecular and Supramolecular Shapeshifting by the Ostwald's Nucleation Stages of a Star Giant Molecule

The shapeshifting behavior for synthetic matters was found at either the molecular or supramolecular level, but the connection between shapeshifting at the two hierarchical levels remains missing. In this study, an 8-arm star giant molecule, NPOSS, was synthesized to connect the molecular and supramolecular shapeshifting. Controlling the conditions of bulk self-assembly allowed us to bring NPOSS into three different Ostwald's stages of nucleation. The high conformational flexibility of NPOSS facilitates molecular shapeshifting and allows NPOSS to take the discotic, rod-like and star-like geometries in different Ostwald's stages. Simultaneous changes in the supramolecular scaffolds were observed as the discotic, rod-like and star-like NPOSS molecules self-assembled into the supramolecular scaffolds of 1D columns, 2D lamellae, and 3D networks, respectively. These changes in the hierarchical structures also affect the CO₂ affinity of NPOSS. Therefore, the connection between the molecular/supramolecular shapeshifting and the structure-driven property changes of NPOSS were established by taking advantage of the high conformational freedom of the 8-arm star giant molecule and its diverse self-assembly pathways leading to the different Ostwald's stages.

Role of Foliar Biointerface Properties and Nanomaterial Chemistry in Controlling Cu Transfer into Wild-Type and Mutant Arabidopsis thaliana Leaf Tissue

Seven Arabidopsis thaliana mutants with differences in cuticle thickness and stomatal density were foliar exposed to 50 mg L^-1 Cu₃(PO₄)₂ nanosheets (NS), CuO NS, CuO nanoparticles, and CuSO₄. Three separate fractions of Cu (surface-attached, cuticle, interior leaf) were isolated from the leaf at 0.25, 2, 4, and 8 h. Cu transfer from the surface through the cuticle and into the leaf varied with mutant and particle type. The Cu content on the surface decreased significantly over 8 h but increased in the cuticle. Cu derived from the ionic form had the greatest cuticle concentration, suggesting greater difficulty in moving across this barrier and into the leaf. Leaf Cu in the increased-stomatal mutants was 8.5-44.9% greater than the decreased stomatal mutants, and abscisic acid to close the stomata decreased Cu in the leaf. This demonstrates the importance of nanomaterial entry through the stomata and enables the optimization of materials for nanoenabled agriculture.

Chiral molecular nanosilicas

Molecular nanoparticles including polyoxometalates, proteins, fullerenes and polyhedral oligosiloxane (POSS) are nanosized objects with atomic precision, among which POSS derivatives are the smallest nanosilicas. Incorporation of molecular nanoparticles into chiral aggregates either by chiral matrices or self-assembly allows for the transfer of supramolecular chirality, yet the construction of intrinsic chirality with atomic precision in discrete molecules remains a great challenge. In this work, we present a molecular folding strategy to construct giant POSS molecules with inherent chirality. Ferrocenyl diamino acids are conjugated by two or four POSS segments. Hydrogen bonding-driven folding of diamino acid arms into parallel β-sheets facilitates the chirality transfer from amino acids to ferrocene and POSS respectively, disregarding the flexible alkyl spacers. Single crystal X-ray structures, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, circular dichroism and vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopy clearly verify the preferential formation of one enantiomer containing chiral molecular nanosilicas. The chiral orientation and chiroptical properties of POSS show pronounced dependence on the substituents of α-amino acids, affording an alternative way to control the folding behavior and POSS chirality in addition to the absolute configuration of amino acids. Through the kinetic nanoprecipitation protocol, one-dimensional aggregation enables chirality transfer from the molecular scale to the micrometer scale, self-assembling into helices in accordance with the packing propensity of POSS in a crystal phase. This work, by illustrating the construction of chiral molecular nanosilicas, paves a new way to obtain discrete chiral molecular nanoparticles for potential chiroptical applications.

Advances in preparation, mechanism and applications of graphene quantum dots/semiconductor composite photocatalysts: A review

Due to the low efficiency of single-component nano materials, there are more and more studies on high-efficiency composites. As zero dimensional (0D) non-metallic semiconductor material, the emergence of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) overcomes the shortcomings of traditional photocatalysts (rapid rate of electron-hole recombination and narrow range of optical response). Their uniqueness is that they can combine the advantages of quantum dots (rich functional groups at edge) and sp² carbon materials (large specific surface area). The inherent inert carbon stabilizes chemical and physical properties, and brings new breakthroughs to the development of benchmark photocatalysts. The photocatalytic efficiency of GQDs composite with semiconductor materials (SCs) can be improved by the following three points: (1) accelerating charge transfer, (2) extending light absorption range, (3) increasing active sites. The methods of preparation (bottom-up and top-down), types of heterojunctions, mechanisms of photocatalysis, and applications of GQDs/SCs (wastewater treatment, energy storage, gas sensing, UV detection, antibiosis and biomedicine) are comprehensively discussed. And it is hoped that this review can provide some guidance for the future research on of GQDs/SCs on photocatalysis.

Aqueous Self-Assembly of Hydrophobic Molecules Influenced by the Molecular Geometry

Water, in addition to acting as a solvent, plays a constructional role in aqueous self-assembly. The hydrophobic molecule of POSS-PDI-POSS (POSS = polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, PDI = perylene diimide) has a shape anisotropy in which POSS is a ball-like bulky group and PDI is a flat aromatic group. The self-assembly of this molecule in water created assemblies with inner spaces due to the steric effect, which suppressed aromatic interactions of PDI and trapped water for the colloidal stability. By replacing POSS with dodecyl (C₁₂), C₁₂-PDI-C₁₂ aggregated with extended aromatic interaction of PDI and less inner water. The resulting aggregates tended to agglomerate and precipitate. This discovery extended the scope of aqueous self-assembly by using the building blocks without amphiphilicity and created knowledge for biophysics.

Interfacial Behavior of Giant Amphiphiles Composed of Azobenzene and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Giant amphiphiles containing azobenzene and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) units are synthesized by linking 4,4'-azodianiline (ADA) and POSS derivatives by stepwise amidation and further modification. The synthesized giant amphiphiles are photoresponsive and show trans-cis isomerization under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. These giant amphiphiles are spread on the air-water interface and compressed by the barrier without and under UV irradiation. By compression, the giant amphiphiles undergo a phase transition from gas (G), liquid expanded (LE), liquid condensed (LC), and solid (S) to a final collapse on the water surface. The giant amphiphiles are cis-isomer-rich under UV irradiation and are trans-isomer-rich without UV irradiation. The trans-isomers are straight-shaped, while the cis-isomers are bent, and hence, their phase transition behaviors on the water surface exhibit a distinct difference.

Investigation of eight-arm tapered star copolymers prepared by anionic copolymerization and coupling reaction

A series of eight-arm tapered star copolymers 8[P(I-co-S)x]-POSS were synthesized by the coupling reaction between octavinyl POSS and the tapered living copolymer chains obtained from statistical anionic copolymerization.

Divalent Multilinking Bonds Control Growth and Morphology of Nanopolymers

Assembly of nanoscale objects into linear architectures resembling molecular polymers is a basic organization resulting from divalent interactions. Such linear architectures occur for particles with two binding patches on opposite sides, known as Janus particles. However, unlike molecular systems where valence bonds can be envisioned as pointlike interactions nanoscale patches are often realized through multiple molecular linkages. The relationship between the characteristics of these linkages, the resulting interpatch connectivity, and assembly morphology is not well-explored. Here, we investigate assembly behavior of model divalent nanomonomers, DNA nanocuboid with tailorable multilinking bonds. Our study reveals that the characteristics of individual molecular linkages and their collective properties have a profound effect on nanomonomer reactivity and resulting morphologies. Beyond linear nanopolymers, a common signature of divalent nanomonomers, we observe an effective valence increase as linkages lengthened, leading to the nanopolymer bundling. The experimental findings are rationalized by molecular dynamics simulations.

Protein Assembly by Design

Proteins are nature's primary building blocks for the construction of sophisticated molecular machines and dynamic materials, ranging from protein complexes such as photosystem II and nitrogenase that drive biogeochemical cycles to cytoskeletal assemblies and muscle fibers for motion. Such natural systems have inspired extensive efforts in the rational design of artificial protein assemblies in the last two decades. As molecular building blocks, proteins are highly complex, in terms of both their three-dimensional structures and chemical compositions. To enable control over the self-assembly of such complex molecules, scientists have devised many creative strategies by combining tools and principles of experimental and computational biophysics, supramolecular chemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials science, and polymer chemistry, among others. Owing to these innovative strategies, what started as a purely structure-building exercise two decades ago has, in short order, led to artificial protein assemblies with unprecedented structures and functions and protein-based materials with unusual properties. Our goal in this review is to give an overview of this exciting and highly interdisciplinary area of research, first outlining the design strategies and tools that have been devised for controlling protein self-assembly, then describing the diverse structures of artificial protein assemblies, and finally highlighting the emergent properties and functions of these assemblies.

Phase Behaviors of Giant Surfactants with Different Numbers of Fluorinated Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane "Heads" and One Poly(ethylene oxide) "Tail" at the Air-Water Interface

Giant surfactants with different numbers of aryl-trifluorovinyl ether-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (FVPOSS) heads and one poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) tail, (FVPOSS)_n-PEO₂₂₇, are precisely synthesized. The phase behaviors of (FVPOSS)_n-PEO₂₂₇ at the air-water interface were investigated through surface pressure measurements (isotherm and hysteresis experiments) and the Brewster angle microscopy. Upon increasing the number of FVPOSS heads, the interfacial behaviors of these giant surfactants greatly change. More phase transitions occur during the compression as the number of FVPOSS heads increased from one to two and three. The evolution of morphologies of Langmuir films and compression-expansion hysteresis curves further illustrate phase transitions at the air-water interface. Furthermore, molecular mechanisms to describe phase transitions of (FVPOSS)_n-PEO₂₂₇ at the interface are put forward. This study deepens the understanding of interfacial phase behaviors of special giant surfactants and provides knowledge of nanostructure design and construction at the interface.
