Design and Synthesis of Polymers for Chiral Photonics

Annealing temperature-dependent induced supramolecular chiroptical response of copolymer thin films studied by pump-modulated transient circular dichroism spectroscopy

Copolymer thin films showing induced supramolecular chirality are of considerable interest for optoelectronic applications such as organic light-emitting diodes. Here, we introduce a new helicene-like chiral additive with two octyloxy substituents which displays excellent chiral induction properties in an achiral polyfluorene copolymer, leading to a circular dichroism (CD) response of up to 10,000 mdeg. This chiral inducer also displays very good thermal stability, which enables us to perform an extended study on the induced chiroptical properties of the cholesteric copolymer thin films annealed at different temperatures in the range 140-260 °C. Starting from about 180 °C, a distinct change in the morphology of the CD-active film is observed by CD microscopy, from micrometre-size granular to extended CD-active regions, where the latter ones display skewed distributions of the dissymmetry parameter gabs. Broadband Müller matrix spectroscopy finds a pronounced CD and circular birefringence (CB) response and only weak linear dichroism (LD, LD') and linear birefringence (LB, LB'). Ultrafast transient CD spectroscopy with randomly polarised excitation reveals a clean mirror-image-type transient response, which shows a second-order decay of the S1 population due to singlet-singlet annihilation processes.

Plasticizer-Induced Enhancement of Mesoscale Dissymmetry in Thin Films of Chiral Polymers with Variable Chain Length

Conjugated polymers with chiral side chains are of interest in areas including chiral photonics, optoelectronics, and chemical and biological sensing. However, the low dissymmetry factors of most neat polymer thin films have limited their practical application. Here, a robust method to increase the absorption dissymmetry factor in a poly-fluorene-thiophene (PF8TS series) system is demonstrated by varying molecular weight and introducing an achiral plasticizer, polyethylene mono alcohol (PEM-OH). Extending chain length within the optimal range and adding this long-chain alcohol significantly enhance the chiroptical properties of spin-coated and annealed thin films. Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry (MMSE) analysis shows good agreement with the steady-state transmission measurements confirming a strong chiral response (circular dichroism (CD) and circular birefringence (CB)), ruling out linear dichroism, birefringence, and specific reflection effects. Solid-state NMR studies of annealed hybrid chiral polymer systems show enhancement of signals associated with aromatic π-stacked backbone and the ordered side-chain conformations. Further studies using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and polarized optical microscopy (POM) indicate that PEM-OH facilitates mesoscopic crystal domain ordering upon annealing. This provides new insights into routes for tuning optical activity in conjugated polymers.

Stereoselective Plasmonic Interaction in Peptide-tethered Photopolymerizable Diacetylenes Doped with Chiral Gold Nanoparticles

Designing polymeric systems with ultra-high optical activity is instrumental in the pursuit of smart artificial chiroptical materials, including the fundamental understanding of structure/property relations. Herein, we report a diacetylene (DA) moiety flanked by chiral D- and L-FF dipeptide methyl esters that exhibits efficient topochemical photopolymerization in the solid phase to furnish polydiacetylene (PDA) with desired control over the chiroptical properties. The doping of the achiral gold nanoparticles provides plasmonic interaction with the PDAs to render asymmetric shape to the circular dichroism bands. With the judicious design of the chiral amino acid ligand appended to the AuNPs, we demonstrate the first example of selective chiral amplification mediated by stereo-structural matching of the polymer-plasmonic AuNP hybrid pairs. Such ordered self-assembly aided by topochemical polymerization in peptide-tethered PDA provides a smart strategy to produce soft responsive materials for applications in chiral photonics.

Influence of the dispersity and molar mass distribution of conjugated polymers on the aggregation type and subsequent chiral expression

This study aims to determine the influence of the dispersity on the aggregation of conjugated polymers and their subsequent chiral expression. Dispersity has been thoroughly investigated for industrial polymerizations, but research on conjugated polymers is lacking. Nonetheless, knowledge thereof is crucial for controlling the aggregation type (type I versus type II) and its influence is therefore investigated. For that purpose, a series of polymers is synthesized via metered initiator addition, resulting in dispersities ranging from 1.18-1.56. The lower dispersity polymers yield type II aggregates and the resulting symmetrical electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra while the higher dispersity polymers are predominantly type I due to the longer chains effectively acting as a seed and therefore yield asymmetrical ECD spectra. Furthermore, a monomodal and bimodal molar mass distribution of similar dispersity are compared, demonstrating that bimodal distributions show both aggregation types and therefore more disorder, leading to a decrease in chiral expression.

Modulating the Chiroptical Response of Chiral Polymers with Extended Conjugation within the Structural Building Blocks

Advancing the emerging area of chiral photonics requires modeling-guided concepts of chiral material design to enhance optical activity and associated optical rotatory dispersion. Herein, we introduce conformational engineering achieved by tuning polymer backbone conjugation through introduction of thiophene structural units in a chiral fluorene polymer backbone. Our theoretical calculations reveal a relationship between the structural conformation and the resultant rotational strength. We further synthesize a series of chiral fluorene-based polymers copolymerized with thiophene whose optical chirality trend is in qualitative agreement with predictions of our quantum chemical calculations. Varying the number of thiophene units in the monomer building block allows us to modulate the rotational strength by tuning the intrafibril helicity of single-stranded polymer chains, whereby the monomer conjugation is retained throughout the whole length of the polymer backbone. Our design concept delineates an underexamined approach: the concept of tuning backbone conjugation and helicity within the main chain to enhance the optical activity of chiral polymer systems.

Correlation of electronic and vibrational properties with the chiro-optical activity of polyfluorene copolymers

The rationale of this paper is to shed some light on the origin of the optical response of two similar chiral fluorene copolymers in correlation with their vibrational modes, to understand how a chiral center placed in a ramification affects the optical properties of the main chain. Various spectroscopic ellipsometric techniques, in the scope of the Stokes theory were used to characterize the optical-vibrational behavior of the polyfluorenes: ellipsometry in emission (EE), transmission (TE), and Raman (ERS). The results showed that the optical activity and the emission of the circularly polarized light depends substantially on the interaction of the chiral carbon in the ramification and the main chain through specific optically active vibrational modes, for each sample. One interesting achievement was to find the absolute dextrorotatory configuration of the studied molecules, that could induce a helicoidal structure to the entire material.

Blending as a Strategy to Attain Chiro-Optically Activity Polymers

Two copolymers, one containing a chiral center and another without any asymmetric site are studied regarding their chiro-optical properties. The pure polymers do not show any signal of chiro-optical activity, only a smooth line is observed in the circular dichroism spectra, even for the chiral material. However, blends containing the achiral one as a major component show striking chiro-optical activity, originating by stable supramolecular structures whose size and shape remain unchanged, regardless of the blend composition. Only the number of such structures (composed by the chiral one), vary with blend composition. The results suggest that working with supramolecular morphology can be an important strategy to attain chiro-optical active polymers.

Controlling Ultra-Large Optical Asymmetry in Amorphous Molecular Aggregations

Although ultra-large optical asymmetry appears in crystalline materials, distractions from the mesoscopic ordering often causes inauthenticity in chiropticity. In amorphous materials, however, it remains challenging and elusive to achieve large chiropticity. Herein, we report the quantitative control of chiral amplification, on amorphous supramolecular structures of cholesteryl-linked bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II), to an exceptionally high level. A proper chiral packing of the building block at several molecular scale considerably contributes to the absorptive dissymmetry factor g_abs , although the system is overall disordered. The intense and tunable aggregation strength renders a variable g_abs value up to +0.10 and +0.31 in the solution and in film state. On this basis, a superior ON-OFF switching of chiropticity is realized under external stimuli. This work establishes a general design principle to control over ultra-large optical asymmetry on a wider scope of chiral materials.

Chiroptical Properties in Thin Films of π-Conjugated Systems

Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (g_abs and g_lum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Chiral Photonic Liquid Crystalline Polyethers with Widely Tunable Helical Superstructures

Liquid crystalline polymers with tunable structures on the scale of visible wavelength are important in optical technology due to their enhanced mechanical stability, processability, and structural integrity. Herein, we report a series of cholesteric liquid crystalline (CLC) polyethers with a widely tunable pitch length and a broad CLC phase window through a bottom-up structural design. The well-defined multicomponent polyethers were successfully synthesized by utilizing monomer-activated anionic ring-opening polymerization. Through adjustment of the composition of chiral cholesteryl (Ch) and photochromic azobenzene (Az) mesogenic moieties, rich phase behaviors have been discovered, and a phase boundary diagram was constructed consequently, wherein cholesteric helical superstructures in a broad composition range and temperature window straight down to the glassy state at room temperature were achieved. Particularly, the planar oriented helical superstructures can exhibit widely tunable and switchable reflections over the entire visible range across red, green, and blue colors through temperature and light control, which are closely related to the extraordinary flexibility of the polyether backbone. Their thermo-light dual-responsive properties provide an alternative opportunity to fabricate smart and switchable polymeric LC materials for optical applications.

Chiral expression of co-crystallizing poly(thiophene)-block-poly(selenophene) copolymers

In this research, the chiral expression of co-crystallizing block copolymers is investigated for the first time.

Ultrafast Broadband Transient Absorption and Circular Dichroism Reveal Relaxation of a Chiral Copolymer

We present a study of the photoinduced dynamics of the chiral polyfluorene-phenylene copolymer PFPh in THF and in cholesteric thin films. After photoexcitation at 370 nm in THF, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) transient absorption spectra show fast subpicosecond to picosecond intrachain migration of singlet excitons, solvation dynamics, and an exciton lifetime of 410 ps. The PFPh thin film features also interchain singlet exciton migration and exhibits shorter (2.1 and 240 ps) and longer lifetime components (2800 ps, interchain recombination). Furthermore, a setup for ultrafast UV-vis broadband transient circular dichroism (TrCD) spectroscopy has been developed. Fast supramolecular relaxation processes are observed, which are linked to changes in the anisotropic polarizability and pitch length of the cholesteric film. Such combined ultrafast transient CD and absorption experiments hold promise to reveal not only details of relaxation processes in supramolecular arrangements but also structural rearrangements of chiral molecular systems featuring CD signals in the UV-vis region.

Giant intrinsic circular dichroism of prolinol-derived squaraine thin films

Molecular chirality and the inherently connected differential absorption of circular polarized light (CD) combined with semiconducting properties offers great potential for chiral opto-electronics. Here we discuss the temperature-controlled assembly of enantiopure prolinol functionalized squaraines with opposite handedness into intrinsically circular dichroic, molecular J-aggregates in spincasted thin films. By Mueller matrix spectroscopy we accurately probe an extraordinary high excitonic circular dichroism, which is not amplified by mesoscopic ordering effects. At maximum, CD values of 1000 mdeg/nm are reached and, after accounting for reflection losses related to the thin film nature, we obtain a film thickness independent dissymmetry factor g = 0.75. The large oscillator strength of the corresponding absorption within the deep-red spectral range translates into a negative real part of the dielectric function in the spectral vicinity of the exciton resonance. Thereby, we provide a new small molecular benchmark material for the development of organic thin film based chiroptics.

Organic photodiodes from homochiral l-proline derived squaraine compounds with strong circular dichroism

We demonstrate the feasibility of inserting highly circular dichroic active layers into an organic photodiode as a potential detector for circular polarized light.

Characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons in a dielectrically chiral-metal-chiral waveguiding structure

We demonstrate theoretically the characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with an asymmetric chiral-metal-chiral (CMC) waveguide structure, under realistic frequency dependencies of the permittivity and chirality parameters. Generalized dispersion relations are derived which can be applied to the nonchiral SPPs. We find that the existence of cutoffs in different modes for the CMC structures may facilitate the design of mode-selective surface plasmon waveguides. CMC-SPPs also exhibit an interesting dependence of the polarization on the chiral strength. These novel characteristics of CMC-SPPs provide new possibilities for the design of more compact nanophotonic devices.

New fluorene-based chiral copolymers with unusually high optical activity in pristine and annealed thin films

Polyfluorene (PF)-based chiral alternating copolymers, i.e., PFPh and PFTh, were successfully synthesized to obtain high circular dichroism (CD) in pristine thin films.
