Abstract
We present an overview of state-of-the-art theory of (i) conformational properties of molecular bottlebrushes in solution, (ii) self-assembly of di- and triblock copolymers comprising comb-shaped and bottlebrush blocks in solutions and melts, and (iii) cross-linked and self-assembled gels with bottlebrush subchains. We demonstrate how theoretical models enable quantitative prediction and interpretation of experimental results and provide rational guidance for design of new materials with physical properties tunable by architecture of constituent bottlebrush blocks.

Abstract
Phytoglycogen nanoparticles (PhG NPs), a single-molecule highly branched polysaccharide, exhibit excellent water retention, due to the abundance of close-packed hydroxyl groups forming hydrogen bonds with water. Here we report lubrication properties of close-packed adsorbed monolayers of PhG NPs acting as boundary lubricants. Using direct surface force measurements, we show that the hydrated nature of the NP layer results in its striking lubrication performance, with two distinct confinement-controlled friction coefficients. In the weak- to moderate-confinement regime, when the NP layer is compressed down to 8% of its original thickness under a normal pressure of up to 2.4 MPa, the NPs lubricate the surface with a friction coefficient of 10-3. In the strong-confinement regime, with 6.5% of the original layer thickness under a normal pressure of up to 8.1 MPa, the friction coefficient was 10-2. Analysis of the water content and energy dissipation in the confined NP film reveals that the lubrication is governed by synergistic contributions of unbound and bound water molecules, with the former contributing to lubrication properties in the weak- to moderate-confinement regime and the latter being responsible for the lubrication in the strong-confinement regime. These results unravel mechanistic insights that are essential for the design of lubricating systems based on strongly hydrated NPs.

Abstract
We studied the structure of brushes consisting of branched oligolactide (OLA) chains grafted onto the surface of cellulose nanoparticles (CNPs) in polylactide (PLA) and compared the outcomes to the case of grafting linear OLA chains using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The systems were considered in a melt state. The branched model OLA chains comprised one branching point and three branches, while the linear OLA chains examined had a molecular weight similar to the branched chains. It was shown that free branches of the branched OLA chains tend to fold back toward the CNPs due to dipole-dipole interactions within the grafted layer, in contrast to the well-established behavior of the grafted uncharged branched chains. This result, however, is in qualitative agreement with the conformational behavior known for linear OLA chains. At the same time, no significant difference in the effectiveness of covering the filler surface with grafted branched or linear OLA chains was found. In terms of the expelling ability of the grafted chains and the interaction between PLA and CNP or OLA, the linear chains were broadly similar (sparse grafting) or better (intermediate or dense grafting) compared to the branched ones. Thus, the grafted lactide chains with a linear architecture, rather than their branched counterpart, may be preferable for the covalent modification of cellulose nanoparticles.

Abstract
Langevin dynamics (LD) simulations have been performed to study the conformations and stratification of grafted three-arm polyelectrolyte (PE) stars in response to external electric fields. The grafted chains with neutral stems and fully charged branches were immersed in a salt-free solution sandwiched between the grafting electrode and a second oppositely charged electrode. The branching points of neutral-stem PE brushes at low grafting densities exhibit a bimodal distribution normal to the grafting electrode. With increasing grafting density, the molecular conformations in the brush layer become more complex with the emergence of multi-mode distributions of the branching point monomers. Under strong electric fields, the fraction of grafted chains with either nearly completely stretched stems or collapsed branches onto the grafting electrode gradually decreases with increasing grafting density due to the stronger electrostatic screening from counterions and monomer charges at higher grafting densities. Simulation results revealed that a collapsing electric field promotes the stratification within the brush layer, leading to high degrees of charge overcompensation from charged monomers collapsed onto the oppositely charged grafting electrode. An approximate analytical self-consistent field model was developed to examine the stratification within the brush layer. Regarding the fraction of grafted chains with the free branches in the upper layer, the prediction of the analytical model qualitatively agrees with the simulation results.

Abstract
Polymer-tethered colloidal particles (aka "particle brush materials") have attracted interest as a platform for innovative material technologies and as a model system to elucidate glass formation in complex structured media. In this contribution, Brillouin light scattering is used to sequentially evaluate the role of brush architecture on the dynamical properties of brush particles in both the individual and assembled (film) state. In the former state, the analysis reveals that brush-brush interactions as well as global chain relaxation sensitively depend on grafting density; i.e., more polymer-like behavior is observed in sparse brush systems. This is interpreted to be a consequence of more extensive chain entanglement. In contrast, the local relaxation of films does not depend on grafting density. The results highlight that relaxation processes in particle brush-based materials span a wider range of time and length scales as compared to linear chain polymers. Differentiation between relaxation on local and global scale is necessary to reveal the influence of molecular structure and connectivity on the aging behavior of these complex systems.

Abstract
We present a study focused on characterizing the interaction forces between mica surfaces across solutions containing star-shaped polymers with cationic ends. Using the surface forces apparatus, we show that the interaction forces in pure water between surfaces covered with the polymers can be adequately described by the dendronized brush model. In that framework, our experimental data suggest that the number of branches adsorbed at the surface decreases as the concentration of polymer in the adsorbing solution increases. The onset of interaction was also shown to increase with the concentration of polymer in solution up to distances much larger than the contour length of the polymer, suggesting that the nanostructure of the polymer film is significantly different from that of a monolayer. High compression of the polymer film adsorbed at low polymer concentration revealed the appearance of a highly structured hydration layer underneath the polymer layer. These results support that charged polymer chains do not necessarily come into close contact with the surface even if strong electrostatic interaction is present. Altogether, our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the interfacial behavior of star-shaped polymers and reveal the unexpected role of hydration water in the control of the polymer conformation.

Abstract
We present numerical results for the thermodynamic rigidity and induced persistence length of dendronized polymers with systematically varied topology of their grafts obtained by the Scheutjens-Fleer self-consistent field method. The results were compared to predictions of an analytical mean-field theory. The two approaches have marked different predictions. In particular, the analytical theory predicts that the induced persistence length and the effective segment aspect ratio of dendronized polymers are increasing functions of the degree of branching of their side chains, whereas numerical calculations provide evidence of the opposite dependences. This discrepancy is argued to be due to the ability of side chains to repartition from the compressed to the dilated regions of a curved bottle brush, which is accounted for by the numerical, but not by the analytical method. The difference is most crucial in the light of the expected ability of dendronized polymers to have a liquid crystalline ordering in semi-dilute solutions.

Abstract
We present a theoretical analysis targeted to describe the structural properties of brushes formed by Ψ-shaped macromolecules tethered by terminal segment of stem to planar surface while exposing multiple free branches to the surrounding solution. We use an analytical self-consistent field approach based on the strong stretching approximation, and the assumption of Gaussian elasticity for linear chain fragments of the tethered macromolecules. The effect of weak and strong polydispersity of branches is analyzed. In the case of weakly polydisperse macromolecules, variations in length of branches lead to a more uniform polymer density distribution with slight increase in the brush thickness compared to the case of monodisperse chains with the same degree of polymerization. We demonstrate that in contrast to linear chains, strong polydispersity of Ψ-shaped macromolecules does not necessarily lead to strong perturbations in polymer density distribution. In particular, mixed brushes of the so-called "mirror" dendrons (in which number of stem monomers in one component coincides with number of monomers in a branch of the other component, and vice versa) give rise to a unified polymer density distribution with shape independent of the brush composition. The predictions of analytical theory are systematically compared to the results of numerical self-consistent field modeling based on the Scheutjens-Fleer approach.
