Comparative Study of Temperature-Induced Association of Cyclic and Linear Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Chains in Dilute Solutions by Laser Light Scattering and Stopped-Flow Temperature Jump

Topology-Directed Coassembly of Linear and Cyclic Amphiphilic Diblock Copolymers: A Monte Carlo Study

The self-assembly behaviors of the mixtures composed of linear and cyclic AB diblock copolymers in A-selective solvents are investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation results indicate that a typical morphological transition of the aggregate from sphere to cylinder, to lamella, and then to vesicle can be achieved via solely adjusting the molar fraction of the cyclic diblock copolymers in the mixture. Furthermore, the simulation results show that under the condition that the pure cyclic and linear diblock copolymers can both form vesicles, the structure characteristics (e.g., the inner radius and hydrophobic membrane thickness of the vesicle) and the formation pathway of the vesicles formed by the mixtures can also be regulated via solely changing the molar fraction of the cyclic diblock copolymers in the mixture. It is worth noting that the inner radius of the vesicle can be considerably increased by increasing the molar fraction of the cyclic diblock copolymers in the mixture, which results in a remarkable increase in the inner capacity of the vesicle. This phenomenon has a unique significance in the field of drug delivery. Our simulation works can provide a new approach to the preparation of polymer materials with novel properties and functions.

Phase Separation of Aqueous Poly(diisopropylaminoethyl methacrylate) upon Heating

Poly(diisopropylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDPA) is a pH- and thermally responsive water-soluble polymer. This study deepens the understanding of its phase separation behavior upon heating. Phase separation upon heating was investigated in salt solutions of varying pH and ionic strength. The effect of the counterion on the phase transition upon heating is clearly demonstrated for chloride-, phosphate-, and citrate-anions. Phase separation did not occur in pure water. The buffer solutions exhibited similar cloud points, but phase separation occurred in different pH ranges and with different mechanisms. The solution behavior of a block copolymer comprising poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and PDPA was investigated. Since the PDMAEMA and PDPA blocks phase separate within different pH- and temperature ranges, the block copolymer forms micelle-like structures at high temperature or pH.

Topology and Sequence-Dependent Micellization and Phase Separation of Pluronic L35, L64, 10R5, and 17R4: Effects of Cyclization and the Chain Ends

The topology effects of cyclization on thermal phase transition behaviors were investigated for a series of amphiphilic Pluronic copolymers of both hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic and hydrophobic-hydrophilic-hydrophobic block sequences. The dye solubilization measurements revealed the lowered critical micelle temperatures (TCMT) along with the decreased micellization enthalpy (ΔHmic) and entropy (ΔSmic) for the cyclized species. Furthermore, the transmittance and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements indicated a block sequence-dependent effect on the clouding phenomena, where a profound decrease in cloud point (Tc) was only found for the copolymers with a hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic block sequence. Thus, the effect of cyclization on these critical temperatures was manifested differently depending on its block sequence. Finally, a comparison of the linear hydroxy-terminated, methoxy-terminated, and cyclized species indicated the effect of cyclization to be unique from a simple elimination of the terminal hydrophilic moieties.

Thermoresponsive Molecular Brushes with a Rigid-Chain Aromatic Polyester Backbone and Poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline Side Chains

A new polycondensation aromatic rigid-chain polyester macroinitiator was synthesized and used to graft linear poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline as well as poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline by cationic polymerization. The prepared copolymers and the macroinitiator were characterized by NMR, GPC, AFM, turbidimetry, static, and dynamic light scattering. The molar masses of the polyester main chain and the grafted copolymers with poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline and poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline side chains were 26,500, 208,000, and 67,900, respectively. The molar masses of the side chains of poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline and poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline and their grafting densities were 7400 and 3400 and 0.53 and 0.27, respectively. In chloroform, the copolymers conformation can be considered as a cylinder wormlike chain, the diameter of which depends on the side chain length. In water at low temperatures, the macromolecules of the poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline copolymer assume a wormlike conformation because their backbones are well shielded by side chains, whereas the copolymer with short side chains and low grafting density strongly aggregates, which was visualized by AFM. The phase separation temperatures of the copolymers were lower than those of linear analogs of the side chains and decreased with the concentration for both samples. The LCST were estimated to be around 45 °C for the poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline graft copolymer, and below 20 °C for the poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline graft copolymer.

Features of Solution Behavior of Polymer Stars with Arms of Poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines Copolymers Grafted to the Upper Rim of Calix[8]arene

Star-shaped polymers with arms of block and gradient copolymers of 2-ethyl- and 2-isopropyl-2-oxazolines grafted to the upper rim of calix[8]arene were synthesized by the "grafting from" method. The ratio of 2-ethyl- and 2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline units was 1:1. Molar masses and hydrodynamic characteristics were measured using molecular hydrodynamics and optics methods in 2-nitropropane. The arms of the synthesized stars were short and the star-shaped macromolecules were characterized by compact dimensions and heightened intramolecular density. The influence of the arm structure on the conformation of star molecules was not observed. At low temperatures, the aqueous solutions of the studied stars were not molecular dispersed but individual molecules prevailed. One phase transition was detected for all solutions. The phase separation temperatures decreased with a growth of the content of more hydrophobic 2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline units. It was shown that the way of arms grafting to the calix[8]arene core affects the behavior of aqueous solutions of star-shaped poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline copolymers. In the case of upper rim functionalization, the shape of calix[8]arene resembles a plate. Accordingly, the core is less shielded from the solvent and the phase separation temperatures are lower than those for star-shaped poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines with lower rim functionalization of the calix[8]arene.

Phototunable Cloud Point Temperatures Stemming from Cyclic Topology: Synthesis and Thermal Phase Transition Behavior of Cyclic Poly(N-acryloylsarcosine methyl ester)

Cyclic polymers possess distinct properties compared with their linear counterparts, such as smaller hydrodynamic volume, lower viscosity, and higher glass-transition temperature, etc. To explore the impact of the cyclic topology on the thermo-induced phase transition behavior of poly(N-acryloylsarcosine methyl ester) (PNASME), the anthracene-terminated telechelic PNASMEs are synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of monomer NASME using a bifunctional chain transfer agent (CTA) with two anthryl groups. Subsequently, cyclic PNASMEs are prepared via UV-induced cyclization under 365 nm UV. There are considerable increases (up to 50 °C) for the cloud point temperatures (T_cp s) of cyclic PNASMEs compared with the linear counterparts. In view of the increment, the T_cp of PNASME is tuned by varying the cyclic/linear ratio (the molar ratio between cyclic PNASME and linear PNASME in the product) with different irradiation time.

Amphiphilic Molecular Brushes with Regular Polydimethylsiloxane Backbone and Poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline Side Chains. 2. Self-Organization in Aqueous Solutions on Heating

The behavior of amphiphilic molecular brushes in aqueous solutions on heating was studied by light scattering and turbidimetry. The main chain of the graft copolymers was polydimethylsiloxane, and the side chains were thermosensitive poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline. The studied samples differed in the length of the grafted chains (polymerization degrees were 14 and 30) and, accordingly, in the molar fraction of the hydrophobic backbone. The grafting density of both samples was 0.6. At low temperatures, macromolecules and aggregates, which formed due to the interaction of main chains, were observed in solutions. At moderate temperatures, heating solutions of the sample with short side chains led to aggregation due to dehydration of poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline and the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. In the case of the brush with long grafted chains, dehydration caused the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds and the compaction of molecules and aggregates. The lower critical solution temperature for solutions of the sample with long side chains was higher than LCST for the sample with short side chains. It was shown that the molar fraction of the hydrophobic component and the intramolecular density are the important factors determining the LCST behavior of amphiphilic molecular brushes in aqueous solutions.

Effect of the microstructure of n-butyl acrylate/N-isopropylacrylamide copolymers on their thermo-responsiveness, self-organization and gel properties in water

HYPOTHESIS

Polymer composition, microstructure, molar mass, architecture… critically affect the properties of thermoresponsive polymers in aqueous media.

EXPERIMENTS

The behaviour of n-isopropylacrylamide and n-butyl acrylate-based copolymers of variable composition and structure (statistical, diblock or triblock) was studied in solution at different temperatures and concentrations with turbidimetry measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, electronic microscopy, rheology and scattering experiments.

FINDINGS

This study illustrates how it is possible through chemical engineering of the microstructure of amphiphilic thermoresponsive polymers to modulate significantly the self-assembly, morphological and mechanical properties of these materials in aqueous media. Statistical structures induced a strong decrease of cloud point temperature compared to block structures with similar composition. Moreover, block structures lead below the transition temperature to the formation of colloidal structures. Above the transition temperature, the formation of colloidal aggregates is observed at low concentrations, and at higher concentrations the formation of gels. Neutron scattering and light scattering measurements show that for a given composition diblock structures lead to smaller colloids and mesoglobules than their triblock counterparts. Moreover, diblock structures, compared to triblock analogs, allow the formation of gels that do not demix with time (no synaeresis) but that are softer than triblock gels.

Topological Polymer Chemistry Enters Materials Science: Expanding the Applicability of Cyclic Polymers

Polymer-topology effects can alter technologically relevant properties when cyclic macromolecules are applied within diverse materials formulations. These include coatings, polymer networks, or nanostructures for delivering therapeutics. While substituting linear building blocks with cyclic analogues in commonly studied materials is itself of fundamental interest, an even more fascinating observation has been that the introduction of physical or chemical boundaries (e.g., a grafting surface or cross-links) can amplify the topology-related effects observed when employing cyclic polymer-based precursors for assembling multidimensional objects. Hence, the application of cyclic polymers has enabled the fabrication of coatings with enhanced biorepellency and superior lubricity, broadened the tuning potential for mechanical properties of polymer networks, increased the thermodynamic stability, and altered the capability of loading and releasing drugs within polymeric micelles.

Influence of Cross-Linking Degree on Hydrodynamic Behavior and Stimulus-Sensitivity of Derivatives of Branched Polyethyleneimine

Cross-linked derivatives of acylated branched polyethyleneimine containing 2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline units were investigated in chloroform and aqueous solutions using methods of molecular hydrodynamics, static and dynamic light scattering, and turbidity. The studied samples differed by the cross-linker content. The solubility of the polyethyleneimines studied worsened with the increasing mole fraction of the cross-linker. Cross-linked polyethyleneimines were characterized by small dimensions in comparison with linear analogs; the increase in the cross-linker content leads to a growth of intramolecular density. At low temperatures, the aqueous solutions of investigated samples were molecularly dispersed, and the large aggregates were formed due to the dehydration of oxazoline units and the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. For the cross-linked polyethyleneimines, the phase separation temperatures were lower than that for linear and star-shaped poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazolines. The low critical solution temperature of the solutions of studied polymers decreased with the increasing cross-linker mole fraction. The time of establishment of the constant characteristics of the studied solutions after the jump-like change in temperature reaches 3000 s, which is at least two times longer than for linear polymers.

Hydration and Dehydration Kinetics: Comparison between Poly( N-isopropyl methacrylamide) and Poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate) Films

Thermoresponsive films of poly( N-isopropyl methacrylamide) (PNIPMAM) and poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate) (PMDEGA) are compared with respect to their hydration and dehydration kinetics using in situ neutron reflectivity. Both as-prepared films present a homogeneous single-layer structure and have similar transition temperatures of the lower critical solution temperature type (TT, PNIPMAM 38 °C and PMDEGA 41 °C). After hydration in unsaturated D₂O vapor at 23 °C, a D₂O enrichment layer is observed in PNIPMAM films adjacent to the Si substrate. In contrast, two enrichment layers are present in PMDEGA films (close to the vapor interface and the Si substrate). PNIPMAM films exhibit a higher hydration capability, ascribed to having both donor (N-H) and acceptor (C═O) units for hydrogen bonds. While the swelling of the PMDEGA films is mainly caused by the increase of the enrichment layers, the thickness of the entire PNIPMAM films increases with time. The observed longer relaxation time for swelling of PNIPMAM films is attributed to the much higher glass transition temperature of PNIPMAM. When dehydrating both films by increasing the temperature above the TT, they react with a complex response consisting of three stages (shrinkage, rearrangement, and reswelling). PNIPMAM films respond faster than PMDEGA films. After dehydration, both films still contain a large amount of D₂O, and no completely dry film state is reached for a temperature above their TTs.

Quantitative determination of the spring entropy effect and its indication of the conformational change of polymer coils with varying concentration in aqueous poly(N-isopropylamide) solutions

The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase separation behaviors of thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) aqueous solutions were investigated by power-compensation differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The entropic effect and hence the change of swelling state of PNIPAM polymer coils in homogeneous concentrated aqueous solutions with varied solution composition was elucidated by the isothermal enthalpy demixing recovery behaviors in distinct concentration regions.

Formation and Growth of Mesoglobules in Aqueous Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Solutions Revealed with Kinetic Small-Angle Neutron Scattering and Fast Pressure Jumps

The phase transition from swollen chains to polymer mesoglobules of an aqueous solution of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) is investigated with kinetic small-angle neutron scattering with 50 ms time resolution in conjunction with millisecond pressure jumps across the coexistence line. The time-resolved study evidenced three distinct regimes: fractal clusters form during the first second and transform into compact mesoglobules. During the following ∼20 s, these grow by diffusion-limited coalescence. The final step consists of a slow growth characterized by an energy barrier of several k_BT. The method opens opportunities for kinetic structural studies of multicomponent systems over wide length and time scales and gives a structural picture spanning from the chain collapse to mesoscopic phase separation.

Emerging Applications of Fluorogenic and Non-fluorogenic Bifunctional Linkers

Homo- and hetero-bifunctional linkers play vital roles in constructing a variety of functional systems, ranging from protein bioconjugates with drugs and functional agents, to surface modification of nanoparticles and living cells, and to the cyclization/dimerization of synthetic polymers and biomolecules. Conventional approaches for assaying conjugation extents typically rely on ex situ techniques, such as mass spectrometry, gel electrophoresis, and size-exclusion chromatography. If the conjugation process involving bifunctional linkers was rendered fluorogenic, then in situ monitoring, quantification, and optical tracking/visualization of relevant processes would be achieved. In this review, conventional non-fluorogenic linkers are first discussed. Then the focus is on the evolution and emerging applications of fluorogenic bifunctional linkers, which are categorized into hetero-bifunctional single-caging fluorogenic linkers, homo-bifunctional double-caging fluorogenic linkers, and hetero-bifunctional double-caging fluorogenic linkers. In addition, stimuli-cleavable bifunctional linkers designed for both conjugation and subsequent site-specific triggered release are also summarized.

Synthesis of multi-arm star thermo-responsive polymers and topology effects on phase transition

Linear and star thermo-responsive polymers of poly(N-acryloylsarcosine methyl ester) [(PNASME)_n] and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [(PNIPAM)_n] with arm number n = 1, 2, 3 and 4 were synthesized following a core-first method via solution RAFT polymerization employing a series of mono- and multi-functional chain transfer agents.

Hyperbranched polyglycerol derivatives exhibiting normal or abnormal thermoresponsive behaviours in water: facile preparation and investigation by turbidimetry and fluorescence techniques

Polymers exhibiting an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour, in which increase in the polymer concentration in water leads to an increase in the phase transition temperature, are few, and no plausible strategy has been addressed to prepare these polymers. For illuminating a feasible common strategy to prepare polymers with an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour, in this study, we systematically prepared a series of hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) derivatives through a facile esterification reaction between HPG and aliphatic acids having different carbon numbers (X). Turbidimetry measurements demonstrate that thermoresponsive HPGs can be obtained only when HPGs are conjugated with aliphatic units of X ≤ 8. The conjugation of HPG with aliphatic units of X ≤ 4 resulted in thermoresponsive HPGs with a normal thermoresponsive behaviour. For the preparation of thermoresponsive HPGs with an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour, X should be controlled in the range of 5-8. Fluorescence measurements with nile red as the fluorescent probe demonstrate that the existence of relatively strong hydrophobic interaction is a key factor to ensure that the polymer exhibits an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour in water. Moreover, turbidimetry and fluorescence techniques are complementary for measuring the phase transition behaviour and suitable for different polymer concentration regions.

Smart Cellulose Nanofluids Produced by Tunable Hydrophobic Association of Polymer-Grafted Cellulose Nanocrystals

Cellulose fibrils, unique plant-derived semicrystalline nanomaterials with exceptional mechanical properties, have significant potential for rheology modification of complex fluids due to their ability to form a physically associated semiflexible fibrillary network. Here, we report new associative cellulose nanocrystals (ACNCs) with stress-responsive rheological behaviors in an aqueous solution. The surface-mediated living radical polymerization was employed to graft poly(stearyl methacrylate-co-2-methacryloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) brushes onto the nanofibrils, and then 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation was conducted to produce nanoscale ACNCs in the aqueous solution. The ACNCs displayed interfibril association driven by the hydrophobic interaction that resulted in the formation of a nanofibrillar crystalline gel phase. We observed that the viscosity of the ACNC fluid showed reversible shear thinning and temperature-induced thickening in response to applied shear stress and thermal shock. Moreover, thanks to generation of a mechanically robust nanofibrillar crystalline gel network, the ACNC suspension showed extraordinary stability to changes in salinity and pH. These results highlighted that the interfibril hydrophobic association of ACNCs was vital and played an essential role in regulation of stimuli-responsive sol-gel transitions.

Multi-Dimensional Self-Assembly of a Dual-Responsive ABC Miktoarm Star Terpolymer

This letter reports the first 2D self-assembly of ABC miktoarm star terpolymers based on dual-responsive polycaprolactone-arm-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-arm-poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (μ-CID), which self-assembled into multilayer nanosheets comprising polycaprolactone single crystals in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/methanol mixed solvents. Interestingly, the nanosheets showed pH-responsive morphological transitions in aqueous solutions, yielding multidimensional assemblies, including 2D hexagonal aggregates, patchy nanofibrils, and patchy vesicles, at different pH values. The nanosheets also exhibited thermoresponsive transition to spherical patchy micelles at a temperature above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) block. This study offers a novel system for fundamental study on the self-assembly of miktoarm star terpolymers.

Unusual molecular mechanism behind the thermal response of polypeptoids in aqueous solutions

The molecular mechanism behind the thermal response of the aqueous solutions of two identical polypeptoids with different architecture was studied. It was found the thermal response is initiated by a conformational change of the polymer backbone irrespective of the architecture.

A novel approach to controlled self-assembly of pH-responsive thermosensitive homopolymer polyelectrolytes into stable nanoparticles

This review addresses the recent research progress in introducing and elaborating a novel approach to controlled polymer self-assembly into stable nanoparticles using pH-responsive thermosensitive homopolymer polyelectrolytes. Interesting aspect of this approach is that stable polymeric nanoparticles are formed from homopolymers of one type only and without any assembly-triggering additives. The process of their formation can be monitored online e.g. by light scattering and particle size can be finely custom tuned. Obtained nanoparticles have interesting properties and are very stable over long periods of time and over a broad range of salt concentrations including physiological conditions. Much effort was devoted not only to finding optimum experimental protocols and to characterizing resulting nanoparticles in detail, but also to understanding physical processes behind these successful protocols.

Fate of Host-Stabilized Charge Transfer Complexation Based on Cucurbit[8]uril: Inducing Cyclization of PNIPAM and Dissociation in Self-Assembly of the Cyclic Polymer

Host-stabilized charge transfer (HSCT) complex based on cucurbit[8]uril has been widely used in building novel supramolecular structures, which could further self-assemble into nano-objects. High stability of the HSCT interaction during the assembly process is always assumed or defaulted. However, the stability during self-assembly has never been well characterized in previous studies. In this work, we realized cyclization of linear PNIPAM by CB[8]-based HSCT interaction first. And then we found unexpectedly that during the heating-induced self-assembly of the cyclic PNIPAM, dissociation of the HSCT interaction took place. In this process, charged CB[8] complex was released from the aggregates of the cyclic polymer to solution, and it could be recaptured by newly added guest molecules. This HSCT dissociation was driven by the incompatibility of the hydrophobicity of the PNIPAM aggregates and the cationic nature of the HSCT complex. To the best of our knowledge, this assembly induced dissociation phenomenon has not been reported in literature.

Cyclic Graft Copolymer Unimolecular Micelles: Effects of Cyclization on Particle Morphology and Thermoresponsive Behavior

The synthesis of cyclic amphiphilic graft copolymers with a hydrophobic polycarbonate backbone and hydrophilic poly(N-acryloylmorpholine) (PNAM) side arms via a combination of ring-opening polymerization (ROP), cyclization via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is reported. The ability of these cyclic graft copolymers to form unimolecular micelles in water is explored using a combination of light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryoTEM) analyses, where particle size was found to increase with increasing PNAM arm length. Further analysis revealed differences in the solution conformations, loading capabilities, and morphologies of the cyclic graft copolymers in comparison to equivalent linear graft copolymer unimolecular micelle analogues. Furthermore, the cyclic and linear graft copolymers were found to exhibit significantly different cloud point temperatures. This study highlights how subtle changes in polymer architecture (linear graft copolymer versus cyclic graft copolymer) can dramatically influence a polymer's nanostructure and its properties.

PNIPAmx–PPO36–PNIPAmx thermo-sensitive triblock copolymers: chain conformation and adsorption behavior on a hydrophobic gold surface

Influence of Confinement on the Chain Conformation of Cyclic Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

In thin and ultrathin supported films, the conformations of flexible linear polymer chains might be considerably confined, in particular, for film thicknesses smaller than a few times the radius of gyration. For ring polymers in solution or in melt, the radii of gyration are significantly reduced as compared to those of their linear counterparts. We study here the influence of geometrical confinement on the chain conformation of cyclic PNIPAM in silicon-supported films. Measurements are performed by grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS). For all films, the component of the radius of gyration parallel to the substrate, R_gc∥, is significantly higher than the unperturbed R_gc determined under theta solvent or melt conditions. We attribute this effect to a preferential selection of stretched PNIPAM ring conformations in thin films and a preferential orientation of macromolecules parallel to the film interfaces with the substrate and air.
