Abstract
Here, we present a detailed study of the metathesis activity of conjugated 1,3 diene derivatives in ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using Grubbs' 3rd generation catalyst (G3). A comprehensive screening of those derivatives revealed that monosubstituted 1,3 dienes show similar reactivities towards G3-alkylidenes as norbornene derivatives. Therefore, they represent perfect candidates for chain transfer agents in a kinetically controlled catalytic ROMP. This unprecedented reactivity allowed us to catalytically synthesize mono-end-functional poly(norborneneimide)s on the gram scale. Much more complex architectures such as star-shaped polymers could also be synthesized catalytically for the very first time via ROMP. This inexpensive and greener route to produce telechelic ROMP polymers was further utilized to synthesize ROMP block copolymers using bifunctional ROMP and ATRP/NCL initiators. Finally, the regioselective reaction of G3 with 1,3 diene derivatives was also exploited in the synthesis of a ROMP-PEG diblock copolymer initiated from a PEG macroinitiator.

Abstract
Block copolymers form the basis of the most ubiquitous materials such as thermoplastic elastomers, bridge interphases in polymer blends, and are fundamental for the development of high-performance materials. The driving force to further advance these materials is the accessibility of block copolymers, which have a wide variety in composition, functional group content, and precision of their structure. To advance and broaden the application of block copolymers will depend on the nature of combined segmented blocks, guided through the combination of polymerization techniques to reach a high versatility in block copolymer architecture and function. This review provides the most comprehensive overview of techniques to prepare linear block copolymers and is intended to serve as a guideline on how polymerization techniques can work together to result in desired block combinations. As the review will give an account of the relevant procedures and access areas, the sections will include orthogonal approaches or sequentially combined polymerization techniques, which increases the synthetic options for these materials.

Abstract
Enol ethers are widely used as quenching reagents for Grubbs catalysts. However, we report the surprisingly effective ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclic enol ethers, because the resulting electron-rich ruthenium alkylidene complex remains active toward metathesis of electron-rich olefins, despite its deactivation toward hydrocarbon olefins. We demonstrate the first example of ROMP of cyclic enol ethers, using 2,3-dihydrofuran as the monomer, producing a new type of degradable and depolymerizable poly(enol ether). The polymers exhibited perfect regioregularity, and their molecular weights can be regulated by the loading of Grubbs initiators or by the use of a linear vinyl ether as the chain transfer agent. We also developed protocols to deactivate the catalyst following metathesis of enol ethers and cleave the catalyst off the resulting polymers using H2O2 oxidation. The resulting poly(dihydrofuran) can be recycled to monomer via depolymerization with Grubbs catalyst or degraded to small molecules by hydrolysis under acidic conditions. This work opens exciting opportunities for a new class of ROMP monomers that lead to degradable polymers.

Abstract
Block copolymers with unique architectures and those that can self-assemble into supramolecular structures are used in medicine as biomaterial scaffolds and delivery vehicles for cells, therapeutics, and imaging agents. To date, much of the work relies on controlling polymer behavior by varying the monomer side chains to add functionality and tune hydrophobicity. Although varying the side chains is an efficient strategy to control polymer behavior, changing the polymer backbone can also be a powerful approach to modulate polymer self-assembly, rigidity, reactivity, and biodegradability for biomedical applications. There are many developments in the syntheses of polymers with segmented backbones, but these developments are not widely adopted as strategies to address the unique constraints and requirements of polymers for biomedical applications. This review highlights dual polymerization strategies for the synthesis of backbone-segmented block copolymers to facilitate their adoption for biomedical applications.

Abstract
This Viewpoint highlights the viability and increasing variety of functionalized polypentenamers as unique and valuable materials created through enthalpy-driven ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of low ring strain cyclopentene monomers. The terms "low ring strain" and "enthalpy-driven" are typically conflicting ideologies for successful ROMP; however, these monomers possess a heightened sensitivity to reaction conditions, which may be leveraged in a number of ways to provide performance elastomers with good yield and precise functional topologies. Over the last several years, a rekindled interest in these systems has led to a renaissance of research aimed at improving their synthesis and exploring their potential. Their chemistry, applications, and future outlook are discussed.

Abstract
Living ROMP has become an important technique for preparing well-controlled, highly functional polymers; however, installing functional groups at the end of living ROMP polymers is not as straightforward as ROMP itself. We report a simple, efficient strategy to introduce functionalities at the chain end of living polynorbornenes via highly selective single addition of disubstituted 1,1-cyclopropenes (CPEs) with no homopropagation. Unlike many other methods for ROMP chain end functionalization, our method does not result in catalyst termination, allowing for further functionalization after CPE addition. The remarkable reactivity of such CPEs allowed for quantitative chain end functionalization to install a variety of useful functionalities, including halides, aldehydes, ketones, amines, and dyes, without using a large excess of CPEs. These polymer chain ends can be readily modified using a range of postpolymerization modifications.

Abstract
The intra-chain radical polymerization of pendant methacryloyl decorated poly(norbornene) imides is a viable route to single-chain nanoparticles, however this process is complicated by adventitious molecular oxygen.

Abstract
Functionalizable monotelechelic polymers are useful materials for chemical biology and materials science. We report here the synthesis of a capping agent that can be used to terminate polymers prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization of norbornenes bearing an activated ester. The terminating agent is a cis-butene derivative bearing a Teoc (2-trimethylsilylethyl carbamate) protected primary amine. Post-polymerization modification of the polymer was accomplished by amidation with an azido-amine linker followed by Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition with propargyl sugars. Subsequent Teoc deprotection and conjugation with pyrenyl isothiocyanates afforded well-defined end-labeled glycopolymers.

Abstract
Poly(tert-butyl ester norbornene imide) homopolymers and poly(tert-butyl ester norbornene imide-b-N-methyloxanorbornene imide) copolymers were prepared by pulsed-addition ring-opening metathesis polymerization (PA-ROMP). PA-ROMP is a unique polymerization method that employs a symmetrical cis-olefin chain transfer agent (CTA) to simultaneously cap a living polymer chain and regenerate the ROMP initiator with high fidelity. Unlike traditional ROMP with chain transfer, the CTA reacts only with the living chain end, resulting in narrowly dispersed products. The regenerated initiator can then initiate polymerization of a subsequent batch of monomer, allowing for multiple polymer chains with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity to be generated from one metal initiator. Using the fast-initiating ruthenium metathesis catalyst (H(2)IMes)(Cl)(2)(pyr)(2)RuCHPh and cis-4-octene as a CTA, the capabilities of PA-ROMP were investigated with a Symyx robotic system, which allowed for increased control and precision of injection volumes. The results from a detailed study of the time required to carry out the end-capping/initiator-regeneration step were used to design several experiments in which PA-ROMP was performed from one to ten cycles. After determination of the rate of catalyst death, a single, low polydispersity polymer was prepared by adjusting the amount of monomer injected in each cycle, maintaining a constant monomer/catalyst ratio. Additionally, PA-ROMP was used to prepare nearly perfect block copolymers by quickly injecting a second monomer at a specific time interval after the first monomer injection, such that chain transfer had not yet occurred. Polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography with multiangle laser light scattering.
