Abstract
A series of rare earth alkoxides bearing amine-bridged bis(phenolato) ligands were synthesized through sequential reactions of RE(C5H5)3(THF) (RE = Y, Lu) or Nd[N(SiMe3)2]3 with bis(phenols) LH2 and CF3CH2OH. Complexes REL(OCH2CF3)(THF)n (1-6) bearing different aryl-substituents were obtained in good yields of 59-70 %. They were applied in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-β-butyrolactone (rac-BBL), which showed good activity (TOF up to 27,300 h-1), resulting in syndiotactically enriched poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) (Pr up to 0.86) with narrow polydispersities (PDI ≤ 1.27). The yttrium complex 3 bearing bulky o-1,1-diphenylethyl substituents outperformed other complexes, suggesting that the smaller ionic radii of metal centers and bulky ortho substituents of ancillary ligands play crucial roles in controlling the activity and stereoselectivity in ROP of rac-BBL. Kinetics of the polymerization of rac-BBL initiated by complex 3 was investigated, which revealed first order dependences on the monomer and initiator concentrations, respectively.

Abstract
Polymers with well-defined structures, synthesized through metal-catalyzed processes, and having end groups exhibiting different polarity and reactivity than the backbone, are gaining considerable attention in both scientific and industrial communities. These polymers show potential applications as fundamental building blocks and additives in the creation of innovative functional materials. Investigations are directed toward identifying the most optimal and uncomplicated synthetic approach by employing a combination of living coordination polymerization mediated by rare-earth metal complexes and C-H bond activation reaction by σ-bond metathesis. This combination directly yields catalysts with diverse functional groups from a single precursor, enabling the production of terminal-functionalized polymers without the need for sequential reactions, such as termination reactions. The utilization of this innovative methodology allows for precise control over end-group functionalities, providing a versatile approach to tailor the properties and applications of the resulting polymers. This perspective discusses the principles, challenges, and potential advancements associated with this synthetic strategy, highlighting its significance in advancing the interface of metalorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and materials science.

Abstract
Herein, we report that (S,S)-prophenolMg2(μ-OnBu)(THF)2 ((S,S)-1, prophenol = (S,S)-2,6-bis[2-(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl]-4-methylphenol) is a highly enantioselective (kR/kS = 140) precatalyst for ring-opening polymerization of rac-β-butyrolactone (β-BL) to isotactic poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (i-PHB), a high performance, biodegradable polyester. Precatalyst (S,S)-1 polymerizes (R)-β-BL with an inversion of stereochemistry to (S)-PHB with a m% (percentage of adjacent linkages with a meso configuration) of 98% at 41% conversion and Tm of 165 °C under a variety of conditions. Complex (S,S)-1 demonstrates unique polymerization kinetics, as it does not polymerize the preferred enantiomer, (R)-β-BL, alone. Mechanistic studies revealed that (S)-β-BL is needed to convert (S,S)-1 into the active enantioselective polymerization catalyst. To the best of our knowledge, (S,S)-1 produces i-PHB with the highest degree of isotacticity observed from a polymerization of rac-β-BL. This study informs the design and understanding of future enantioselective and earth-abundant metal catalysts for ring-opening polymerization of β-lactones.

Abstract
Within bioplastics, natural poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) stands out as fully biocompatible and biodegradable, even in marine environments; however, its high isotacticity and crystallinity limits its mechanical properties and hence its applications. PHB can also be synthesized with different tacticities via a catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-β-butyrolactone (BBL), paving the way to PHB with better thermomechanical and processability properties. In this work, the catalyst family is extended based on aluminum phenoxy-imine methyl catalyst [AlMeL2], that reveals efficient in the ROP of BBL, to the halogeno analogous complex [AlClL2]. As well, the impact on the ROP mechanism of different initiators is further explored with a particular focus in dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), a hardly studied initiator for the ROP of BBL. A thorough mechanistic study is performed that evidences the presence of two concomitant DMAP-mediated mechanisms, that lead to either a DMAP or a crotonate end-capping group. Besides, in order to increase the possibilities of PHB post-polymerization functionalization, the introduction of a side-chain functionality is explored, establishing the copolymerization of BBL with β-allyloxymethylene propiolactone (BPLOAll), resulting in well-defined P(BBL-co-BPLOAll) copolymers.

Abstract
Precise control over polymer microstructure can enable the molecular tunability of material properties and represents a significant challenge in polymer chemistry. Stereoblock copolymers are some of the simplest stereosequenced polymers, yet the synthesis of stereoblock polyesters from prochiral or racemic monomers outside of "simple" isotactic stereoblocks remains limited. Herein, we report the development of irreversible chain-transfer ring-opening polymerization (ICT-ROP), which overcomes the fundamental limitations of single catalyst approaches by using transmetalation (e.g., alkoxide-chloride exchange) between two catalysts with distinct stereoselectivities as a means to embed temporally controlled multicatalysis in ROP. Our combined small-molecule model and catalytic polymerization studies lay out a clear molecular basis for ICT-ROP and are exploited to access the first examples of atactic-syndiotactic stereoblock (at-sb-st) polyesters, at-sb-st polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). We achieve high levels of control over molecular weight, tacticity, monomer composition, and block structures in a temporally controlled manner and demonstrate that stereosequence control leads to polymer tensile properties that are independent of thermal properties.

Abstract
The low percentage of recyclability of the polymeric materials obtained by olefin transition metal (TM) polymerization catalysis has increased the interest in their substitution with more eco-friendly materials with reliable physical and mechanical properties. Among the variety of known biodegradable polymers, linear aliphatic polyesters produced by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters occupy a prominent position. The polymer properties are highly dependent on the macromolecule microstructure, and the control of stereoselectivity is necessary for providing materials with precise and finely tuned properties. In this review, we aim to outline the main synthetic routes, the physical properties and also the applications of three commercially available biodegradable materials: Polylactic acid (PLA), Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid) (PLGA), and Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), all of three easily accessible via ROP. In this framework, understanding the origin of enantioselectivity and the factors that determine it is then crucial for the development of materials with suitable thermal and mechanical properties.

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), aliphatic polyesters synthesized by microorganisms, have gained considerable attention as biodegradable plastics. Recently, α-carbon-methylated PHAs have been shown to exhibit several interesting properties that differ from those of conventional PHAs, such as their crystallization behavior and material properties. This study investigated α-carbon methylated (S)- and (R)-3-hydroxy-2-methylpropionate (3H2MP) as new repeating units. 3H2MP units were homopolymerized or copolymerized with (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) by manipulating the culture conditions of recombinant Escherichia coli LSBJ. Consequently, PHAs with 3H2MP units ranging from 5 to 100 mol % were synthesized by external addition of (R)- and (S)-enantiomers or the racemic form of 3H2MPNa. The (S)-3H2MP precursor supplemented into the culture medium was almost directly polymerized into PHA while maintaining its chirality. Therefore, a highly isotactic P(3H2MP) (R:S = 1:99) was synthesized, which displayed a melting temperature of 114-119 °C and a relatively high enthalpy of fusion (68 J/g). In contrast, in cultures supplemented with (R)-3H2MP, the precursor was racemized and polymerized into PHA, resulting in the synthesis of the amorphous polymer atactic P(3H2MP) (R:S = 40:60). However, racemization was not observed at a low concentration of the (R)-3H2MP precursor, thereby synthesizing P(3HB-co-8 mol % 3H2MP) with 100% (R)-3H2MP units. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the thermal degradation temperatures at 5% weight loss of P(3H2MP)s occurred at approximately 313 °C, independent of tacticity, which is substantially higher than that of P(3HB) (257 °C). This study demonstrates a new concept for controlling the physical properties of biosynthesized PHA by manipulating the polymers' tacticity using 3H2MP units.

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), such as poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrates] [(R)-P3HB], are produced by bacteria and are promising alternatives to nondegradable polyolefin plastics, but their semicrystallinity and high melting points are only maintained at high tacticity, which are commonly seen in other semicrystalline polymers like isotactic polypropylene (iPP). We herein report a class of synthetic PHAs, cis-poly(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate)s (cis-PHMBs), that exhibit tacticity-independent semicrystallinity. The syndiotactic, isotactic, and even atactic PHMBs all share high melting points (Tm > 170 °C) and nearly identical crystal structures. The isomorphism of these polymers across three different tacticities has allowed access to iPP-like, high-performance PHMB without the requirement of high tacticity.

Abstract
With the ever-growing demand for sustainability, designing polymeric materials using readily accessible feedstocks provides potential solutions to address the challenges in energy and environmental conservation. Complementing the prevailing strategy of varying chemical composition, engineering microstructures of polymer chains by precisely controlling their chain length distribution, main chain regio-/stereoregularity, monomer or segment sequence, and architecture creates a powerful toolbox to rapidly access diversified material properties. In this Perspective, we lay out recent advances in utilizing appropriately designed polymers in a wide range of applications such as plastic recycling, water purification, and solar energy storage and conversion. With decoupled structural parameters, these studies have established various microstructure-function relationships. Given the progress outlined here, we envision that the microstructure-engineering strategy will accelerate the design and optimization of polymeric materials to meet sustainability criteria.

Abstract
Polyolefin plastics are widely used due to their low cost and outstanding properties, but their environmental persistence presents a major societal challenge. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable substitutes for polyolefins, but their high cost and thermal instability are impediments to their widespread application. Here we report a series of methylated polyhydroxybutyrates, poly(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate)s, which are structurally inspired by natural PHAs. The cis homopolymers exhibit tacticity-independent crystallinity, which allows for the discovery of high-melting, thermally stable and mechanically tough copolymers, and a full range of polyolefin-like properties can be further achieved by tailoring the cis/trans ratio of the repeating units. Moreover, these materials can be synthesized from inexpensive carbon monoxide and 2-butene feedstocks, and they can be chemically recycled or upcycled at their end of life. The versatile properties, abundant feedstocks and end-of-life utility of this family of polyesters will enable a powerful platform for the discovery of sustainable alternatives to polyolefin plastics.

Abstract
Stereo-defects present in stereo-regular polymers often diminish thermal and mechanical properties, and hence suppressing or eliminating them is a major aspirational goal for achieving polymers with optimal or enhanced properties. Here, we accomplish the opposite by introducing controlled stereo-defects to semicrystalline biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), which offers an attractive biodegradable alternative to semicrystalline isotactic polypropylene but is brittle and opaque. We enhance the specific properties and mechanical performance of P3HB by drastically toughening it and also rendering it with the desired optical clarity while maintaining its biodegradability and crystallinity. This toughening strategy of stereo-microstructural engineering without changing the chemical compositions also departs from the conventional approach of toughening P3HB through copolymerization that increases chemical complexity, suppresses crystallization in the resulting copolymers, and is thus undesirable in the context of polymer recycling and performance. More specifically, syndio-rich P3HB (sr-P3HB), readily synthesized from the eight-membered meso-dimethyl diolide, has a unique set of stereo-microstructures comprising enriched syndiotactic [rr] and no isotactic [mm] triads but abundant stereo-defects randomly distributed along the chain. This sr-P3HB material is characterized by high toughness (UT = 96 MJ/m3) as a result of its high elongation at break (>400%) and tensile strength (34 MPa), crystallinity (Tm = 114 °C), optical clarity (due to its submicron spherulites), and good barrier properties, while it still biodegrades in freshwater and soil.

Abstract
Naturally produced, biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) promise more sustainable alternatives to nonrenewable/degradable plastics, but biological PHA's stereomicrostructures are strictly confined to isotactic (R)-polymers or copolymers of random sequences. Chemical synthesis via catalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic (di)esters offers expedient access to diverse PHA microstructures, including those with defined comonomer sequences and tacticities. However, the synthesis of alternating isotactic PHAs has not been achieved by the existing methodologies. Here, we report the design of unsymmetrically disubstituted eight-membered diolides (rac-8DLR1-R2) and their site- and stereoselective ROP with discrete chiral catalysts, enabling the synthesis of alternating isotactic PHAs, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-alt-3-hydroxyvalerate) (alt-P3HBV) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-alt-3-hydroxyheptanoate) (alt-P3HBHp), with high to quantitative (>99%) alternation and isotacticity and Mn up to 113 kDa and Đ = 1.01. Physical properties of such PHAs are substantially determined by the degree of backbone sequence alternation and tacticity, ranging from amorphous to semi-crystalline materials. The alt-P3HBV shows significantly improved mechanical performance relative to the constituent homopolymers. Intriguingly, enantiomeric (R)-alt-P3HBV and (S)-alt-P3HBV, synthesized by kinetically resolved ROP of rac-8DLMe-Et, form a stereocomplex with a significantly enhanced Tm (by 53 °C), while the enantiomeric homopolymers do not form a stereocomplex.

Abstract
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is naturally accumulated by bacteria but can also be synthesized chemically. Its processability is limited, as it tends to degrade at temperatures above its melting temperature; hence, investigation into crystallization kinetics and morphology of PHB materials of both natural and synthetic origins is of great need and interest to get a better understanding of structure-property relationship. Accordingly, this contribution reports a first study of the crystallization and morphology of synthetic PHB materials of different molecular weights. These synthetic PHBs are racemic mixtures (50/50 mol %) of R and S chain configurations and are compared with an enantiopure bacterial R-PHB. Nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization studies show that R and S chains of PHB can cocrystallize in the same unit cell as the R-PHB. Most significantly, the results show that the presence of S chains decreases the overall crystallization rate, which could enhance the processability and industrialization of PHB-based materials.

Abstract
We report here on the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic β-thiobutyrolactone (rac-TBL), as the first chemical synthesis of poly(3-thiobutyrolactone) (P3TB), the thioester analogue of the ubiquitous poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB). The ROP reactions proceed very fast (TOF >12 000 h-1 at r.t.) in the presence of various metal-based catalysts. Remarkably, catalyst systems based on non-chiral yttrium complexes stabilized by tetradentate amino alkoxy- or diamino-bis(phenolate) ligands {ONXOR1,R2 }2- (X=O, N) provide access to cyclic P3TB with either high isoselectivity (Pm up to 0.90) or high syndiotactic bias (Pr up to 0.70). The stereoselectivity can be controlled by manipulation of the substituents on the ligand platform and adequate choice of the reaction solvent and temperature as well. The cyclic polymer topology is evidenced by MALDI-ToF MS, NMR and TGA. Highly isotactic cyclic P3TB is a semi-crystalline material as revealed by DSC.

Abstract
A series of new zirconium complexes bearing bulkier amine bis(phenolate) tetradentate ligands, Me2NCH2CH2N{CH2(2-O-3-R-5-tBu-C6H2)}2ZrCl2 [R = CPhMe2 (1); CMePh2 (2); CPh3 (3); Ph (4); 3,5-Me2C6H3 (5); 3,5-tBu2C6H3 (6); 4-tBuC6H4 (7)], were synthesized and characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and elemental analyses. The molecular structures of complexes 1 and 3 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray crystallography analysis reveals that these complexes display a slightly distorted octahedral geometry around their metal centers. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), dry-MAO, MAO/butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), or AliBu3/CPh3B(C6F5)4, these zirconium complexes exhibit high catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization [up to 1.07 × 107 g PE (mol Zr)-1 h-1] and ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization [up to 2.78 × 107 g polymer (mol Zr)-1 h-1], affording (co)polymers with moderate to high molecular weights and good comonomer incorporations. The zirconium complexes with bulkier R groups show higher catalytic activities and longer lifetimes and produce polymers with higher molecular weights, while the zirconium complexes with aryls as R groups demonstrate relatively good comonomer incorporation ability for the copolymerization reactions. These catalytic systems also show moderate catalytic activities for the polymerization reactions of propylene, 1-hexene, and 1-decene. Upon activation with MAO, the zirconium complexes also show moderate catalytic activities for the copolymerization reaction of ethylene with 3-buten-1-ol (treated with 1 equiv of AliBu3), affording copolymers with the incorporation of 3-buten-1-ol up to 1.05%.

Abstract
Photoredox ring-opening polymerization of O-carboxyanhydrides allows for the synthesis of polyesters with precisely controlled molecular weights, molecular weight distributions, and tacticities. While powerful, obviating the use of precious metal-based photocatalysts would be attractive from the perspective of simplifying the protocol. Herein, we report the Co and Zn catalysts that are activated by external light to mediate efficient ring-opening polymerization of O-carboxyanhydrides, without the use of exogenous precious metal-based photocatalysts. Our methods allow for the synthesis of isotactic polyesters with high molecular weights (>200 kDa) and narrow molecular weight distributions (M w/M n < 1.1). Mechanistic studies indicate that light activates the oxidative status of a CoIII intermediate that is generated from the regioselective ring-opening of the O-carboxyanhydride. We also demonstrate that the use of Zn or Hf complexes together with Co can allow for stereoselective photoredox ring-opening polymerizations of multiple racemic O-carboxyanhydrides to synthesize syndiotactic and stereoblock copolymers, which vary widely in their glass transition temperatures.

Abstract
A series of new phosphasalalen pro-ligands, analogues of salalen but with an iminophosphorane replacing the imine functionality, and their corresponding rare-earth alkoxide and siloxide complexes were synthesized. The multinuclear NMR spectra and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that, for the tert-butoxide and ethoxide complexes, the resulting phosphasalalen rare-earth product was composed of a mononuclear alkoxide and a binuclear complex containing bridged alkoxo and hydroxo groups, while an analogous binuclear complex was isolated as the sole product for the siloxide complex. All the complexes could catalyze the heteroselective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide (Pr up to 0.77) with high catalytic activities and a controlled polydispersity. Remarkably, the yttrium and lutetium phosphasalalen complexes could also efficiently catalyze the ROP of rac-β-butyrolactone to produce syndiotactic polymers (Pr up to 0.73) while their salalen analogues were inert, revealing the special effects of the iminophosphorane moiety. Detailed end-group analyses and kinetic investigations suggested that the alkoxo-hydroxo-bridged complexes maintained their binuclear structures in the polymerization.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a new low-symmetry β-diketimine featuring a pendant amino(methyl)phenol donor and its corresponding heteroleptic rare-earth (RE) complexes. This includes the first structurally characterized examples of alcoholysis and insertion from an isolated REIII amide in a β-diketimine framework. The flexible methylene linkage leads to REIII complexes with tunable dynamic solution behavior that defines their stoichiometric and catalytic reactivity. The addition of a strong neutral donor ligand, tricyclohexylphosphine oxide, suppresses a prevalent catalyst degradation pathway (base-promoted elimination) and dramatically enhances the catalyst performance in the stereospecific ring-opening polymerization of rac-β-butyrolactone. Our results further demonstrate the importance of ligand reorganization in the stoichiometric and catalytic activity of REIII ions.

Abstract
Isoenriched poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) is a biodegradable material with properties similar to isotactic polypropylene, yet efficient routes to this material are lacking after 50+ years of extensive efforts in catalyst design. In this contribution, a novel lanthanum aminobisphenolate catalyst (1-La) can access isoenriched P3HB through the stereospecific ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-β-butyrolactone (rac-BBL). Replacing the tethered donor group of a privileged supporting ligand with a non-coordinating benzyl substituent generates a catalyst whose reactivity and selectivity can be tuned with inexpensive achiral neutral donor ligands (e.g. phosphine oxides, OPR3). The 1-La/OPR3 (R = n-octyl, Ph) systems display high activity and are the most isoselective homogeneous catalysts for the ROP of rac-BBL to date (0 °C: Pm = 0.8, TOF ∼190 h−1). Combined reactivity and spectroscopic studies provide insight into the active catalyst structure and ROP mechanism. Both 1-La(TPPO)2 and a structurally related catalyst with a tethered donor group (2-Y) operate under chain-end stereocontrol; however, 2-RE favors formation of P3HB with opposite tacticity (syndioenriched) and its ROP activity and selectivity are totally unaffected by added neutral donor ligands. Our studies uncover new roles for neutral donor ligands in stereospecific ROP, including suppression of chain-scission events, and point to new opportunities for catalyst design. Simple achiral neutral donor ligands modify catalyst structure and function to enable access to isoenriched poly-3-hydroxybutyrate, a biodegradable material with properties similar to isotactic polypropylene.![]()

Abstract
Bacterial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a unique class of biodegradable polymers because of their biodegradability in ambient environments and structural diversity enabled by side-chain groups. However, the biosynthesis of PHAs is slow and expensive, limiting their broader applications as commodity plastics. To overcome such limitation, the catalyzed chemical synthesis of bacterial PHAs has been developed, using the metal-catalyzed stereoselective ring-opening (co)polymerization of racemic cyclic diolides (rac-8DLR , R=alkyl group). In this combined experimental and computational study, polymerization kinetics, stereocontrol, copolymerization characteristics, and the properties of the resulting PHAs have been examined. Most notably, stereoselective copolymerizations of rac-8DLMe with rac-8DLR (R=Et, Bu) have yielded high-molecular-weight, crystalline isotactic PHA copolymers that are hard, ductile, and tough plastics, and exhibit polyolefin-like thermal and mechanical properties.

Abstract
Stereoselective polymerization of chiral or prochiral monomers is a powerful method to produce high-performance stereoregular crystalline polymeric materials. However, for monomers with two stereogenic centers, it is generally necessary to separate diastereomers before polymerization, resulting in substantial material loss and added energy cost associated with the separation and purification process. Here we report a diastereoselective polymerization methodology enabled by catalysts that directly polymerize mixtures of eight-membered diolide (8DL) monomers with varying starting ratios of chiral racemic (rac) and achiral meso diastereomers into stereosequenced crystalline polyhydroxyalkanoates with isotactic and syndiotactic stereodiblock or stereotapered block microstructures. These polymers show enhanced ductility and toughness relative to polymers of pure rac-8DL, subject to tuning by variation of the diastereomeric ratio and structure of the 8DL monomers.

Abstract
An effective route for ring-opening copolymerization of β-butyrolactone (BBL) with ε-decalactone (ε-DL) is reported. Microstructures of the block copolymers characterized by 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed syndiotactic-enriched poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) blocks. Several di- and triblock copolymers (PDL-b-PHB and PDL-b-PHB-b-PDL, respectively) were successfully synthesized by sequential addition of the monomers using (salan)Y(III) complexes as catalysts. The results from MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry confirmed the presence of the copolymers. Moreover, thermal properties of the block copolymers were also investigated and showed that the microphase separation of PDL-b-PHB copolymers into PHB- and PDL-rich domains has an impact on the glass transition temperatures of both blocks.

Abstract
Bacterial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) is a perfectly isotactic, crystalline material possessing properties suitable for substituting petroleum plastics, but high costs and low volumes of its production are impractical for commodity applications. The chemical synthesis of P3HB via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic β-butyrolactone has attracted intensive efforts since the 1960s, but not yet produced P3HB with high isotacticity and molecular weight. Here, we report a route utilizing racemic cyclic diolide (rac-DL) derived from bio-sourced succinate. With stereoselective racemic catalysts, the ROP of rac-DL under ambient conditions produces rapidly P3HB with perfect isotacticity ([mm] > 99%), high melting temperature (Tm = 171 °C), and high molecular weight (Mn = 1.54 × 105 g mol-1, Đ = 1.01). With enantiomeric catalysts, kinetic resolution polymerizations of rac-DL automatically stops at 50% conversion and yields enantiopure (R,R)-DL and (S,S)-DL with >99% e.e. and the corresponding poly[(S)-3HB] and poly[(R)-3HB] with high Tm = 175 °C.

Abstract
Band-selective (bs) HSQC, improving spectral resolution by restriction of the heteronuclear dimension without inducing spectral folding, has been recently used for polymer tacticity determination. Herein is reported an evaluation of various bs-HSQC and bs-HMBC sequences, first from a methodological point of view (selectivity, dependence to INEPT interpulse delay or relaxation delay), using the cyclic peptide cyclosporin selected as a model compound, and then from an applicative approach, comparing tacticity determined from bs-HSQC and bs-HMBC experiments to the one obtained from 1D 13C{¹H} on poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s samples. For HSQC sequences, the 13C selectivity scheme consisting in substituting a 13C broadband refocalization by a selective one revealed itself problematic, with unwanted aliased signals, whereas the insertion of double pulsed field gradients spin-echo (DPFGSE) or the use of opposite sign gradients bracketing a selective refocalization gave satisfactory results. Determination of the probability of syndiotactic enchainments, Ps, by bs-HSQC is fully consistent and no precision loss was observed when decreasing acquisition time (37 min vs. 106 min for 1D 13C{¹H}). Bs-HMBC, although not straightforwardly applicable for tacticity determination, could provide (after a calibration step) an alternative for compounds of which only 13C carbonyl signals are resolved enough for discriminating between syndiotactic and isotactic configurations.

Abstract
Biodegradable polyesters with various tacticities have been synthesized by means of stereoselective ring-opening polymerization of racemic lactide and β-lactones but with limited side-chain groups. However, stereoselective synthesis of functional polyesters remains challenging from O-carboxyanhydrides that have abundant pendant side-chain functional groups. Herein we report a powerful strategy to synthesize stereoblock polyesters by stereoselective ring-opening polymerization of racemic O-carboxyanhydrides with the use of photoredox Ni/Ir catalysts and a selected Zn complex with an achiral ligand. The obtained stereoblock copolymers are highly isotactic with high molecular weights ( > 70 kDa) and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.1), and they display distinct melting temperatures that are similar to their stereocomplex counterparts. Furthermore, in one-pot photoredox copolymerization of two different O-carboxyanhydrides, the use of such Zn complex mediates kinetic resolution of the comonomers during enchainment and shows a chirality preference that allows for the synthesis of gradient copolymers. The stereoselective synthesis of polyesters has been achieved via various methods; however, all routes show limited side-chain group functionality. Here the authors synthesize stereoblock polyesters by photoredox ring-opening polymerization of racemic O-carboxyanhydrides that have abundant side-chain functionality.

Abstract
Reported herein is the first stereoselective controlled ROP of a specific family of racemic functional β-lactones, namely 4-alkoxymethylene-β-propiolactones (BPLOR s). This process is catalyzed by an yttrium complex stabilized by a nonchiral tetradentate amino alkoxy bisphenolate ligand {ONOOR'2 }2- , which features both a good activity and a high degree of control over the molar masses of the resulting functional poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s. A simple modification of the R' substituents in ortho and para position on the ligand platform allows for a complete reversal from virtually pure syndioselectivity (Ps up to 0.91 with R'=cumyl) to very high isoselectivity (Pi up to 0.93 with R'=Cl), as supported by DFT insights. This is the first example of a highly isoselective ROP of a racemic chiral β-lactone.
