Abstract
The performance of crystalline organic semiconductors depends on the solid-state structure, especially the orientation of the conjugated components with respect to device platforms. Often, crystals can be engineered by modifying chromophore substituents through synthesis. Meanwhile, dissymetry is necessary for high-tech applications like chiral sensing, optical telecommunications, and data storage. The synthesis of dissymmetric molecules is a labor-intensive exercise that might be undermined because common processing methods offer little control over orientation. Crystal twisting has emerged as a generalizable method for processing organic semiconductors and offers unique advantages, such as patterning of physical and chemical properties and chirality that arises from mesoscale twisting. The precession of crystal orientations can enrich performance because achiral molecules in achiral space groups suddenly become candidates for the aforementioned technologies that require dissymetry.

Abstract
Self-assembly of 3D interiors and iridescence properties of poly(β-hydroxybutyric acid-co-β-hydroxyvaleric acid) (PHBV) periodic crystals are examined using microcopy techniques and microbeam X-ray diffraction. Morphology of PHBV can be tailored by crystallizing in presence of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) or poly(trimethylene adipate) (PTA) for displaying desired periodicity patterns. The regular alternate-layered lamellae of banded PHBV crystal aggregates, resembling the structures the natural mineral moonstone or nacre, are examined to elaborate the origin of light interference and formation mechanisms of periodic lamellar aggregation of PHBV spherulites. By using PHBV as a convenient model and the crystal diffraction data, this continuing work demonstrates unique methodology for effectively studying the periodic assembly in widely varying polymers with similar aggregates. Grating structures in periodically assembled polymer crystals can be tailored for microstructure with orderly periodicity.

Abstract
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-valerate) (PHBV), being one of the most studied and commercially available polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), presents an intrinsic brittleness and narrow processing window that currently hinders its use in several plastic applications. The aim of this study was to develop a biodegradable PHA-based blend by combining PHBV with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH), another copolyester of the PHA family that shows a more ductile behavior. Blends of PHBV with 20% wt., 30% wt., and 40% wt. of PHBH were obtained by melt mixing, processed by cast extrusion in the form of films, and characterized in terms of their morphology, crystallization behavior, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and thermoformability. Full miscibility of both biopolymers was observed in the amorphous phase due to the presence of a single delta peak, ranging from 4.5 °C to 13.7 °C. Moreover, the incorporation of PHBH hindered the crystallization process of PHBV by decreasing the spherulite growth rate from 1.0 µm/min to 0.3 µm/min. However, for the entire composition range studied, the high brittleness of the resulting materials remained since the presence of PHBH did not prevent the PHBV crystalline phase from governing the mechanical behavior of the blend. Interestingly, the addition of PHBH greatly improved the thermoformability by widening the processing window of PHBV by 7 s, as a result of the increase in the melt strength of the blends even for the lowest PHBH content.

Abstract
The growth of lamellar crystals has been studied in particular for spherulites in polymeric materials. Even though such spherulitic structures and their growth are of crucial importance for the mechanical and optical properties of the resulting polymeric materials, several issues regarding the residual stress remain unresolved in the wider context of crystal growth. To gain further insight into micro-mechanical forces during the crystallization process of lamellar crystals in polymeric materials, herein, we introduce tetraarylsuccinonitrile (TASN), which generates relatively stable radicals with yellow fluorescence upon homolytic cleavage at the central C-C bond in response to mechanical stress, into crystalline polymers. The obtained crystalline polymers with TASN at the center of the polymer chain allow not only to visualize the stress arising from micro-mechanical forces during polymer crystallization via fluorescence microscopy but also to evaluate the micro-mechanical forces upon growing polymer lamellar crystals by electron paramagnetic resonance, which is able to detect the radicals generated during polymer crystallization.

Abstract
Chiral silica, which acts as a nucleating agent of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), was demonstrated to induce excess handedness of lamellar twist in the banded spherulites of PCL blended with poly(vinyl butyral). The d- and l-forms of silica enhanced the right- and left-handed twists, respectively. The influences of chiral silica on the twist handedness were statistically significant. These results indicate that the handedness of twisting can be controlled upon primary nucleation. The organic substances used as chiral templates of silica had no effect on the handedness; silica was shown to govern the handedness. The possible mechanisms of the chirality transfer are discussed.

Organization of Twisting Lamellar Crystals in Birefringent Banded Polymer Spherulites: A Mini-Review. CRYSTALS 2017. Abstract
In this mini-review, we summarize the evidences of lamellar twisting in the birefringent banded polymer spherulites demonstrated by various characterization techniques, such as polarized optical microscopy, real-time atomic force microscopy, micro-focus wide angle X-ray diffraction, etc. The real-time observation of lamellar growth under atomic force microscopy unveiled the fine details of lamellar twisting and branching in the banded spherulites of poly(R-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-17 mol% R-3-hydroxyhexanoate). Organization of the twisting lamellar crystals in the banded spherulites was revealed as well. The lamellar crystals change the orientation via twisting rather than the macro screw dislocations. In fact, macro screw dislocation provides the mechanism of synchronous twisting of neighboring lamellar crystals. The driving force of lamellar twisting is attributed to the anisotropic and unbalanced surface stresses. Besides molecular chirality, variation of the growth axis and the chemical groups on lamellar surface can change the distribution of the surface stresses, and thus may invert the handedness of lamellar twisting. Thus, based on both experimental results and physical reasoning, the relation between crystal chirality and chemical molecular structures has been suggested, via the bridge of the distribution of surface stresses. The factors affecting band spacing are briefly discussed. Some remaining questions and the perspective of the topic are highlighted.

Abstract
Nanoindentation provides clear evidence that spherulite banding can be associated with a continuous modulation of mechanical properties from the more compliant peaks to the stiffer valleys. The structural arrangement in polymer-banded spherulites has intrigued scientists for many decades, and the debate has been recently intensified with the advent of new experimental evidence. The present paper approaches this issue by exploring the local mechanical properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)-ringed spherulites via nanoindentation and discussing the confidence of the results. It was found that storage modulus and hardness across the banding morphology can be described as a sequence of regular oscillations with a periodicity that exactly matches the one observed using optical and atomic force microscopy. Results are consistent with the model of regular twisting of the lamellae, with flat-on arrangement in the low regions and edge-on lamellae in the crests.

Abstract
Crystals of a variety of substances including elements, minerals, simple salts, organic molecular crystals, and high polymers forgo long-range translational order by twisting and bending as they grow. These deviations have been observed in crystals ranging in size from nanometers to centimeters. How and why so many materials choose dramatic non-crystallographic distortions is analyzed, with an emphasis on crystal chemistries that give rise to stresses operating either on surfaces of crystallites or within the bulk.

Abstract
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB-co-3HV)] are produced by various microorganisms as an intracellular carbon and energy reserve from agricultural feedstocks such as sugars and plant oils under unbalanced growth conditions. P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV) have attracted the attention of academia and industry because of its biodegradability, biocompatibility, thermoplasticity, and plastic-like properties. This review first introduced the isodimorphism, spherulites, and molecular interaction of P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV). In addition, the effects of 3HV content on the melting temperature and crystallization rate were discussed. Then the drawbacks of P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV) including brittleness, narrow melt processing window, low crystallization rate, slow biodegradation rate in body, and so on were summarized. At last, the preparation, structure, and properties of P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV) fiber were introduced.

Abstract
The relation between the handedness of helical twist and the S-shaped cross section of the lamellar crystals is discussed for linear polyethylene. The lamellar crystals are found to rotate so that the convex surfaces of “S” push aside the melt when they advance in the growth direction. This relation, which has not been examined sufficiently so far, is found to be opposite from what was proposed earlier. A model to explain these observations is presented. This paper also demonstrates that the twist handedness can be clarified based on the stack order of crystalline lamellae without any treatment such as etching or extraction to isolate the lamellar crystals.

Abstract
Previously, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) classical ring-banded spherulites with periodic twisted lamellae and nonclassical concentric ringed structures induced by rhythmic growth were obtained by modulating the competition between diffusion flux and spherulitic growth. In this study, the modulation of diffusion flux and spherulitic growth on ring-banded structures is further studied, and hierarchical nested ring-banded patterns with a banded structure nested in the ridge rings of the other concentric ringed structure are prepared during slow solvent evaporation in poly(ethylene adipate) (PEA) solution films. The structural characterizations reveal that the big concentric ringed structure derives from periodic variation of thicknesses and that the small inner banded structure consists of periodic twisted lamellae. A diffusion-induced rhythmic growth mechanism and an unbalanced surface stress induced lamellar twisting model are proposed to illustrate the formation of the big concentric and the inner banded structures, respectively.
