Abstract
Chalcogenide glass (ChG) with unique material properties has been widely used in mid-infrared. Traditional ChG microspheres/nanospheres preparation usually uses a high-temperature melting method, in which it is difficult to accurately control the size and the morphology of the nanospheres. Here, we produce nanoscale-uniform (200-500 nm), morphology-tunable, and arrangement-orderly ChG nanospheres from the inverse-opal photonic crystal (IOPC) template by the liquid-phase template (LPT) method. Moreover, we refer to the formation mechanism of nanosphere morphology as the evaporation-driven self-assembly of colloidal dispersion nanodroplets within the immobilized template and find that the concentration of ChG solution and the pore size of IOPC are the key to control the morphology of the nanospheres. The LPT method is also applied to the two-dimensional microstructure/nanostructure. This work provides an efficient and low-cost strategy for the preparation of multisize ChG nanospheres with tunable morphology and is expected to find various applications in mid-infrared, optoelectronic devices.

Synergistic interventional photothermal therapy and immunotherapy using an iron oxide nanoplatform for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Acta Biomater 2022; 138:453-462. Abstract
Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the most lethal malignancy due to its high metastatic ability and poor drug permeability. Here, a synergized interventional photothermal-immunotherapy strategy was developed with imaging guidance and temperature monitoring by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, for the local treatment of metastatic PC. A tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive nanoplatform was fabricated via coating of DSPE-PEG and indocyanine green (ICG) onto imiquimod (IMQ) loaded amorphous iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs). This unique nanoplatform, IMQ@IONs/ICG, served as a contrast agent for MRI, a drug delivery vehicle for IMQ and ICG, and a catalyst for TME modulation. The biodegradable IMQ@IONs/ICG was also non-toxic, and improved the penetration of the loaded drugs in PC to maximize thermal ablation of the tumor and minimize damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. For the treatment of aggressive, metastatic Panc02-H7 pancreatic tumors in mice, ION-assisted MRI was employed to guide the administration of interventional photothermal therapy (IPTT) and monitor the temperature distribution in target tumor and surrounding tissue during treatment. The local IPTT treatment induced in situ immunogenic cell death (ICD), and, in combination with released IMQ, triggered a strong antitumor immunity, leading to decreased metastases and increased CD8+ in spleen and tumors. With precise local treatment and monitoring, treated primary tumors were completely eradicated, mesentery metastases were dramatically reduced, and the survival time was significantly prolonged, without damage to normal tissue and systemic autoimmunity. Overall, this synergistic strategy represents a promising approach to treat PC with significant potential for clinical applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most lethal malignancies because it is non-permeable to drugs and highly metastatic. In this study, we designed a tumor microenvironment-responsive amorphous iron oxide nanoplatform (ION) to co-deliver photothermal agent (ICG) and toll-like-receptor-7 agonist (IMQ). This biodegradable nanoplatform IMQ@IONs/ICG improved the penetration of the loaded drugs in pancreatic tumor. With MR imaging guidance and temperature monitoring, the precise interventional photothermal therapy on mouse Panc02-H7 orthotopic tumors releases tumor antigens to initiate tumor-special immune responses, amplified by the released IMQ. Our results demonstrate that IMQ@IONs/ICG overcomes the obstacle of drug delivery to pancreatic tumors, and when combined with photothermal therapy, induces a systemic antitumor immunity to control metastatic tumors.

Abstract
The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is known as a promising mean of nitrogen fixation to mitigate the energy crisis and facilitate fertilizer production under mild circumstances. For electrocatalytic reactions, the design of efficient catalysts is conducive to reducing activation energy and accelerating lethargic dynamics. Among them, hollow structural materials possess cavities in their structures, which can slack off the escape rate of N2 and reaction intermediates, prolong the residence time of N2 , enrich the reaction intermediates' concentration, and shorten electron transportation path, thereby further enhancing their NRR activity. Here, the basic synthetic strategies of hollow structural materials are introduced first. Then, the recent breakthroughs in hollow structural materials as NRR catalysts are reviewed from the perspective of intrinsic, mesoscopic, and microscopic regulations, aiming to discuss how structures affect and improve the catalytic performance. Finally, the future research directions of hollow structural materials as NRR catalysts are discussed. This review is expected to provide an outlook for optimizing hollow structural NRR catalysts.

Abstract
In this work, a hollow LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (H-NCM) nanosphere cathode with excellent electrochemical performance is developed for lithium-ion batteries. Preparation of the H-NCM nanospheres involves the sacrificial template method, in which carbon nanospheres work as the template and polyvinylpyrrolidone works as an additive. Structural and morphological analyses show that the as-prepared H-NCM nanospheres are highly uniform with diameters of approximately 50 nm and wall thicknesses of 10 nm. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the H-NCM cathode not only manifests outstanding rate performance in the potential window of 2.5-4.5 V with high reversible specific capacities of 205.6, 194.9, 177.8, 165.9, 151.7, 126.0, and 115.3 mA h g-1 at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 C, respectively, but also delivers excellent stability with a capacity retention of 60.1% at 10 C after 2000 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance of the H-NCM cathode can be put down to the distinctive hollow interior structure with thin nanostructured walls, which can synergistically benefit the significantly enhanced rate capability and cycling stability.

Abstract
We synthesize hollow spherical particles/membrane sacks of graphene oxide loaded with nanoparticles to be used as nanoparticles carriers, through a new method based on emulsion precipitation and sublimation of the cores. We vary the synthesis parameters, such as shear rate, pH, and graphene oxide and oil concentration ratios. Our results show a concentration dependent membrane thickness that varies between 3 and 25 nm depending on the concentration, and their mean diameters vary between 500 nm and 70 μm. In addition, polymeric nanoparticles are loaded inside the graphene oxide shells forming core-shell particles demonstrating that they can be used as carriers for nanoparticles. Our particles are characterized via laser diffraction, zeta potential, FE-SEM, TEM, BET, and AFM. Potential applications of this work include applications that benefit from core-shell structures and nanoparticle carriers, including drug formulation, catalysis, and electrochemical applications.

Abstract
A novel route for the synthesis of boehmite nanospheres with a hollow core and the shell composed of highly crumpled AlOOH nanosheets by oxidizing Al nanopowder in pure water under mild processing conditions is described. The stepwise events of Al transformation into boehmite are followed by monitoring the pH in the reaction medium. A mechanism of formation of hollow AlOOH nanospheres with a well-defined shape and crystallinity is proposed which includes the hydration of the Al oxide passivation layer, local corrosion of metallic Al accompanied by hydrogen evolution, the rupture of the protective layer, the dissolution of Al from the particle interior and the deposition of AlOOH nanosheets on the outer surface. In contrast to previously reported methods of boehmite nanoparticle synthesis, the proposed method is simple, and environmentally friendly and allows the generation of hydrogen gas as a by-product. Due to their high surface area and high, slit-shaped nanoporosity, the synthesized AlOOH nanostructures hold promise for the development of more effective catalysts, adsorbents, vaccines and drug carriers.

Abstract
Due to its amphiphilic property, graphene oxide (GO) can achieve a variety of nanostructures with different morphologies (for example membranes, hydrogel, crumpled particles, hollow spheres, sack-cargo particles, Pickering emulsions, and so on) by self-assembly. The self-assembly is mostly derived from the self-concentration of GO sheets at various interfaces, including liquid-air, liquid-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces. This paper gives a comprehensive review of these assembly phenomena of GO at the three types of interfaces, the derived interfacial self-assembly techniques, and the as-obtained assembled materials and their properties. The interfacial self-assembly of GO, enabled by its fantastic features including the amphiphilicity, the negatively charged nature, abundant oxygen-containing groups and two-dimensional flexibility, is highlighted as an easy and well-controlled strategy for the design and preparation of functionalized carbon materials, and the use of self-assembly for uniform hybridization is addressed for preparing hybrid carbon materials with various functions. A number of new exciting and potential applications are also presented for the assembled GO-based materials. This contribution concludes with some personal perspectives on future challenges before interfacial self-assembly may become a major strategy for the application-targeted design and preparation of functionalized carbon materials.

Abstract
Imaging labels, therapeutic drugs, as well as many other agents can all be integrated into one nanoplatform to allow for molecular imaging and therapy. With this in mind, herein we report the first example of a tailor-made charge-conversional nanocomposite composed of mesoporous γ-AlO(OH) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) via a simple and versatile method, and the obtained nanocomposite could be performed as a drug delivery carrier and applied for cell imaging. The nanocomposite (UCNPs-Al) was found to be able to efficiently transport DOX, a typical chemotherapeutic anticancer drug, into the cancer cell and release DOX from UCNPs-Al triggering by the mildly acidic environment. In vitro cell cytotoxicity assay verified that DOX-loaded nanocomposites (UCNPs-Al-DOX) exhibited greater cytotoxicity with respect to free DOX at the same concentrations, because of the increase in cell uptake of anti-cancer drug delivery vehicles mediated by the charge-conversional property. Moreover, the UCL emission from UCNPs and the red fluorescence of DOX allow the nanocomposite to track and monitor the drug delivery system simultaneously. These findings have opened up new insights into designing and producing the highly versatile multifunctional nanoparticles for simultaneous imaging and therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Templating is one of the most important techniques for the controlled synthesis of nanostructured materials. This powerful tool uses a pre-existing guide with desired nanoscale features to direct the formation of nanomaterials into forms that are otherwise difficult to obtain. As a result, templated synthesis is capable of producing nanostructures with unique structures, morphologies and properties. In this review, we summarize the general principles of templated synthesis and cover recent developments in this area. As a wide variety of synthesis techniques are utilized to produce nanomaterials using template-based methods, the discussion is organized around the various types of common templates. We examine the use of both physical and chemical hard colloidal templates, soft templates, and other non-colloidal templates, followed by our perspective on the state of the field and potential future directions.

Abstract
Monodisperse single-crystal hollow cerium dioxide nanocubes with exposed (001) facets have been synthesized with the assistance of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in a water and ethanol system. A series of experiments indicate that ammonium ion plays an important role in the formation of the hollow structure and PVP plays a key role in the formation of a cubic shape. The hollow cerium dioxide nanocubes exhibit excellent CO catalytic oxidation activity.

Abstract
Hierarchical macroporous Zn(2)SnO(4) consisting of nanoparticles has been synthesized for the first time through an in situ hydrothermal and a following annealing process in the presence of a polystyrene (PS) template. Zn(2)SnO(4) macropore sizes are tuned in the range of 180-650 nm by selecting the appropriate size of PS spheres, and the building unit size of the Zn(2)SnO(4)macropore is 4.2 nm regardless of the PS sizes. The photovoltaic performances of the dye-sensitized solar cell based on hierarchical macroporous Zn(2)SnO(4) with 200, 400, 600 and 750 nm PS spheres are 5.01, 4.76, 4.39 and 3.92%, respectively. The smaller pore size of Zn(2)SnO(4) exhibits higher photovoltaic performance, which is ascribed to the higher dye loading, faster electron transport rate and slower electron recombination rate. These are confirmed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy, intensity-modulated photovoltage spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The double layered photoelectrode based on a Zn(2)SnO(4) nanoparticles dye adsorption layer (4.2 nm in particle size, 15 μm in film thickness) and a macroporous light scattering layer (180 nm in macropore size, 4.0 μm in thickness) shows a remarkable enhancement in power conversion efficiency (6.10%) compared to that of Zn(2)SnO(4) nanoparticles photoelectrode (5.36%) because of its superior light scattering ability.

Abstract
Many colloidal synthesis routes are not scalable to high production rates, especially for nanoparticles of complex shape or composition, due to precursor expense and hazards, low yields, and the large number of processing steps. The present work describes a strategy to synthesize hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) out of metal chalcogenides, based on the slow heating of a low-melting-point metal salt, an elemental chalcogen, and an alkylammonium surfactant in octadecene solvent. The synthesis and characterization of CdSe HNPs with an outer diameter of 15.6 ± 3.5 nm and a shell thickness of 5.4 ± 0.9 nm are specifically detailed here. The HNP synthesis is proposed to proceed with the formation of alkylammonium-stabilized nano-sized droplets of molten cadmium salt, which then come into contact with dissolved selenium species to form a CdSe shell at the droplet surface. In a reaction-diffusion mechanism similar to the nanoscale Kirkendall effect it is speculated that the cadmium migrates outwardly through this shell to react with more selenium, causing the CdSe shell to thicken. The proposed CdSe HNP structure comprises a polycrystalline CdSe shell coated with a thin layer of amorphous selenium. Photovoltaic device characterization indicates that HNPs have improved electron transport characteristics compared to standard CdSe quantum dots, possibly due to this selenium layer. The HNPs are colloidally stable in organic solvents even though carboxylate, phosphine, and amine ligands are absent; stability is attributed to octadecene-selenide species bound to the particle surface. This scalable synthesis method presents opportunities to generate hollow nanoparticles with increased structural and compositional variety.

Abstract
Amphiphilic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were produced at liquid-liquid interface via ligand exchange between hydrophilic AuNPs and disulfide-containing polymer chains. By using oil droplets as templates, hybrid hollow capsules with AuNPs on the surfaces were obtained after interfacial cross-linking polymerization. The volume ratio of toluene to water exerts an important effect on the size of capsules. The average size of the capsules increases with the volume ratio. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the hollow structures. In this research, not only one-component but also multicomponent hollow capsules were prepared by copolymerization of acrylamide and hybrid AuNPs at liquid-liquid interface. Because of the improvement in hydrophilicity of the hollow capsules, the average size of multicomponent capsules is bigger than one-component ones in aqueous solution.
