Engineering the hypersonic phononic band gap of hybrid Bragg stacks

Probing gigahertz coherent acoustic phonons in TiO2 mesoporous thin films

Ultrahigh-frequency acoustic-phonon resonators usually require atomically flat interfaces to avoid phonon scattering and dephasing, leading to expensive fabrication processes, such as molecular beam epitaxy. Mesoporous thin films are based on inexpensive wet chemical fabrication techniques that lead to relatively flat interfaces regardless the presence of nanopores. Here, we report mesoporous titanium dioxide-based acoustic resonators with resonances up to 90 GHz, and quality factors from 3 to 7. Numerical simulations show a good agreement with the picosecond ultrasonics experiments. We also numerically study the effect of changes in the speed of sound on the performance of the resonator. This change could be induced by liquid infiltration into the mesopores. Our findings constitute the first step towards the engineering of building blocks based on mesoporous thin films for reconfigurable optoacoustic sensors.

Engineering by Cuts: How Kirigami Principle Enables Unique Mechanical Properties and Functionalities

Kirigami, the ancient art of paper cutting, has evolved into a design and fabrication framework to engineer multi-functional materials and structures at vastly different scales. By slit cutting with carefully designed geometries, desirable mechanical behaviors-such as accurate shape morphing, tunable auxetics, super-stretchability, buckling, and multistability-can be imparted to otherwise inflexible sheet materials. In addition, the kirigami sheet provides a versatile platform for embedding different electronic and responsive components, opening up avenues for building the next generations of metamaterials, sensors, and soft robotics. These promising potentials of kirigami-based engineering have inspired vigorous research activities over the past few years, generating many academic publications. Therefore, this review aims to provide insights into the recent advance in this vibrant field. In particular, this paper offers the first comprehensive survey of unique mechanical properties induced by kirigami cutting, their underlying physical principles, and their corresponding applications. The synergies between design methodologies, mechanics modeling, advanced fabrication, and material science will continue to mature this promising discipline.

Origin of the Acoustic Bandgaps in Hypersonic Colloidal Phononics: The Role of the Elastic Impedance

How phonons propagate in nanostructures determines the flow of elastic and thermal energy in dielectric materials. However, a reliable theoretical prediction of the phonon dispersion relation requires experimental verification both near to and far from the Brillouin zone of the nanostructure. We report on the experimental hypersonic phonon dispersion of hard (SiO2) and soft (polymer) fcc colloidal crystals infiltrated in liquid polydimethylsiloxane with different elastic impedance contrast using Brillouin light spectroscopy. We discuss the distinct differences with first-principles full elastodynamic calculations involving a multiple-scattering theory. Interparticle contacts strongly impact the long-wavelength speed of sound and the nature of the particle vibration resonance-induced hybridization hypersonic bandgap. The absence of the order-induced Bragg bandgap in SiO2 and its presence in soft opals cannot be fully accounted for by the theory, limiting its predictive power. Bridging the elasticity of the two colloidal crystals with suitable SiO2 core-shell (polymer) particles reveals an unprecedented crossover behavior in the dispersion relation. In view of many conversational parameters, the control tuning of phonon propagation in soft matter-based hypersonic phononics remains challenging.

Nanoscale-Structured Hybrid Bragg Stacks with Orientation- and Composition-Dependent Mechanical and Thermal Transport Properties: Implications for Nacre Mimetics and Heat Management Applications

Layered nanomaterials fascinate researchers for their mechanical, barrier, optical, and transport properties. Nacre is a biological example thereof, combining excellent mechanical properties by aligned submicron inorganic platelets and nanoscale proteinic interlayers. Mimicking nacre with advanced nanosheets requires ultraconfined organic layers aimed at nacre-like high reinforcement fractions. We describe inorganic/polymer hybrid Bragg stacks with one or two fluorohectorite clay layers alternating with one or two poly(ethylene glycol) layers. As indicated by X-ray diffraction, perfect one-dimensional crystallinity allows for homogeneous single-phase materials with up to a 84% clay volume fraction. Brillouin light spectroscopy allows the exploration of ultimate mechanical moduli without disturbance by flaws, suggesting an unprecedentedly high Young's modulus of 162 GPa along the aligned clays, indicating almost ideal reinforcement under these conditions. Importantly, low heat conductivity is observed across films, κ_⊥ = 0.11-0.15 W m^-1 K^-1, with a high anisotropy of κ_∥/κ_⊥ = 28-33. The macroscopic mechanical properties show ductile-to-brittle change with an increase in the clay volume fraction from 54% to 70%. Conceptually, this work reveals the ultimate elastic and thermal properties of aligned layered clay nanocomposites in flaw-tolerant conditions.

Graphene-Based One-Dimensional Terahertz Phononic Crystal: Band Structures and Surface Modes

In this paper, we provide a theoretical and numerical study of the acoustic properties of infinite and semi-infinite superlattices made out of graphene-semiconductor bilayers. In addition to the band structure, we emphasize the existence and behavior of localized and resonant acoustic modes associated with the free surface of such structures. These modes are polarized in the sagittal plane, defined by the incident wavevector and the normal to the layers. The surface modes are obtained from the peaks of the density of states, either inside the bulk bands or inside the minigaps of the superlattice. In these structures, the two directions of vibrations (longitudinal and transverse) are coupled giving rise to two bulk bands associated with the two polarizations of the waves. The creation of the free surface of the superlattice induces true surface localized modes inside the terahertz acoustic forbidden gaps, but also pseudo-surface modes which appear as well-defined resonances inside the allowed bands of the superlattice. Despite the low thickness of the graphene layer, and though graphene is a gapless material, when it is inserted periodically in a semiconductor, it allows the opening of wide gaps for all values of the wave vector k// (parallel to the interfaces). Numerical illustrations of the band structures and surface modes are given for graphene-Si superlattices, and the surface layer can be either Si or graphene. These surface acoustic modes can be used to realize liquid or bio-sensors graphene-based phononic crystal operating in the THz frequency domain.

Low-frequency Raman spectrum of 2D layered perovskites: Local atomistic motion or superlattice modes?

We report the low-frequency Raman spectrum (ω = 10 cm^-1-150 cm^-1) of a wide variety of alkylammonium iodide based 2D lead halide perovskites (2D LHPs) as a function of A-site cation (MA = methylammonium and FA = formamidinium), octahedral layer thickness (n = 2-4), organic spacer chain length (butyl-, pentyl-, hexyl-), and sample temperature (T = 77 K-293 K). Using density functional theory calculations under the harmonic approximation for n = 2 BA:MAPbI, we assign several longitudinal/transverse optical phonon modes between 30 cm^-1 and 100 cm^-1, the eigendisplacements of which are analogous to that observed previously for octahedral twists/distortions in bulk MAPbI. Additionally, we propose an alternative assignment for low-frequency modes below this band (<30 cm^-1) as zone-folded longitudinal acoustic phonons corresponding to the periodicity of the entire layered structure. We compare measured spectra to predictions of the Rytov elastic continuum model for zone-folded dispersion in layered structures. Our results are consistent across the various 2D LHPs studied herein, with energetic shifts of optical phonons corresponding to microscopic structural differences between materials and energetic shifts of acoustic phonons according to changes in the periodicity and elastic properties of the perovskite/organic subphases. This study highlights the importance of both the local atomic order and the superlattice structure on the vibrational properties of layered 2D materials.

Elastic wave propagation in smooth and wrinkled stratified polymer films

Periodic materials with sub-micrometer characteristic length scale can provide means for control of propagation of hypersonic phonons. In addition to propagation stopbands for the acoustic phonons, distinct dispersive modes can reveal specific thermal and mechanical behavior under confinement. Here, we employ both experimental and theoretical methods to characterize the phonon dispersion relation (frequency versus wave vector). We employed Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy to record the phonon dispersion in stratified multilayer polymer films. These films consist of 4-128 alternate polycarbonate (PC) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layers along and normal to the periodicity direction. The distinct direction-dependent phonon propagation was theoretically accounted for, by considering the polarization, frequency and intensity of the observed modes in the BLS spectra. Layer-guiding was also supported by the glass transition temperatures of the PC and PMMA layers. The number of phonon dispersion branches increased with the number of layers but only a few branches were observable by BLS. Introduction of an additional in-plane periodicity, through a permanent wrinkling of the smooth PC/PMMA films, had only subtle consequences in the phonon propagation. Using the frequencies of the periodicity induced modes and momentum conservation equation we were able to precisely back calculate the wrinkle periodicity. However, a wrinkling-induced acoustic stopband utilizing flexible layered materials is still a challenge.

Anomalous Nanoscale Optoacoustic Phonon Mixing in Nematic Mesogens

Recent inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) experiments on mesogens have revealed entirely new capabilities with regards to their nanoscale phonon-assisted heat management. Mesogens such as nematic liquid crystals (LCs) are appealing systems for study because their structure and morphology can easily be tuned. We report on Q-resolved ultra-high-resolution IXS, X-ray diffraction, and THz time-domain spectroscopy experiments combined with large-scale all-atom molecular dynamics simulations on the dynamic properties of 5CB LCs. For the first time, we observe a strong mixing of phonon excitations originating from independent in-phase and out-of-phase van-der-Waals-mediated displacement patterns. The coexistence of transverse acoustic and optical modes of 5CB LCs at near room temperature is revealed through the emergent transverse phonon gap and THz light-phonon coupling taking place within the same energy range. Furthermore, our experimental observations are supported by analysis showing correlations of spontaneous fluctuations of LCs on picosecond time scales. These findings are significant for the design of a new generation of soft molecular vibration-sensitive nanoacoustic and optomechanical applications.

Elastic Modulus and Thermal Conductivity of Thiolene/TiO2 Nanocomposites

Metal oxide based polymer nanocomposites find diverse applications as functional materials, and in particular thiol-ene/TiO2 nanocomposites are promising candidates for dental restorative materials. The important mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites, however, are still not well understood. In this study, the elastic modulus and thermal conductivity of thiol-ene/TiO2 nanocomposite thin films with varying weight fractions of TiO2 nanoparticles are investigated by using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and 3ω measurements, respectively. As the TiO2 weight fraction increases from 0 to 90%, the effective elastic longitudinal modulus of the films increases from 6.2 to 37.5 GPa, and the effective thermal conductivity from 0.04 to 0.76 W/m K. The former increase could be attributed to the covalent cross-linking of the nanocomposite constituents. The latter one could be ascribed to the addition of high thermal conductivity TiO2 nanoparticles and the formation of possible conductive channels at high TiO2 weight fractions. The linear dependence of the thermal conductivity on the sound velocity, reported for amorphous polymers, is not observed in the present nanocomposite system.

Slow Photons for Photocatalysis and Photovoltaics

Solar light is widely recognized as one of the most valuable renewable energy sources for the future. However, the development of solar-energy technologies is severely hindered by poor energy-conversion efficiencies due to low optical-absorption coefficients and low quantum-conversion yield of current-generation materials. Huge efforts have been devoted to investigating new strategies to improve the utilization of solar energy. Different chemical and physical strategies have been used to extend the spectral range or increase the conversion efficiency of materials, leading to very promising results. However, these methods have now begun to reach their limits. What is therefore the next big concept that could efficiently be used to enhance light harvesting? Despite its discovery many years ago, with the potential for becoming a powerful tool for enhanced light harvesting, the slow-photon effect, a manifestation of light-propagation control due to photonic structures, has largely been overlooked. This review presents theoretical as well as experimental progress on this effect, revealing that the photoreactivity of materials can be dramatically enhanced by exploiting slow photons. It is predicted that successful implementation of this strategy may open a very promising avenue for a broad spectrum of light-energy-conversion technologies.

Directional elastic wave propagation in high-aspect-ratio photoresist gratings: liquid infiltration and aging

Determination of the mechanical properties of nanostructured soft materials and their composites in a quantitative manner is of great importance to improve the fidelity in their fabrication and to enable the subsequent reliable utility. Here, we report on the characterization of the elastic and photoelastic parameters of a periodic array of nanowalls (grating) by the non-invasive Brillouin light scattering technique and finite element calculations. The resolved elastic vibrational modes in high and low aspect ratio nanowalls reveal quantitative and qualitative differences related to the two-beam interference lithography fabrication and subsequent aging under ambient conditions. The phononic properties, namely the dispersion relations, can be drastically altered by changing the surrounding material of the nanowalls. Here we demonstrate that liquid infiltration turns the phononic function from a single-direction phonon-guiding to an anisotropic propagation along the two orthogonal directions. The susceptibility of the phononic behavior to the infiltrating liquid can be of unusual benefits, such as sensing and alteration of the materials under confinement.

Two-Dimensional Phononic Crystals: Disorder Matters

The design and fabrication of phononic crystals (PnCs) hold the key to control the propagation of heat and sound at the nanoscale. However, there is a lack of experimental studies addressing the impact of order/disorder on the phononic properties of PnCs. Here, we present a comparative investigation of the influence of disorder on the hypersonic and thermal properties of two-dimensional PnCs. PnCs of ordered and disordered lattices are fabricated of circular holes with equal filling fractions in free-standing Si membranes. Ultrafast pump and probe spectroscopy (asynchronous optical sampling) and Raman thermometry based on a novel two-laser approach are used to study the phononic properties in the gigahertz (GHz) and terahertz (THz) regime, respectively. Finite element method simulations of the phonon dispersion relation and three-dimensional displacement fields furthermore enable the unique identification of the different hypersonic vibrations. The increase of surface roughness and the introduction of short-range disorder are shown to modify the phonon dispersion and phonon coherence in the hypersonic (GHz) range without affecting the room-temperature thermal conductivity. On the basis of these findings, we suggest a criteria for predicting phonon coherence as a function of roughness and disorder.

Watching surface waves in phononic crystals

In this paper, we review results obtained by ultrafast imaging of gigahertz surface acoustic waves in surface phononic crystals with one- and two-dimensional periodicities. By use of quasi-point-source optical excitation, we show how, from a series of images that form a movie of the travelling waves, the dispersion relation of the acoustic modes, their corresponding mode patterns and the position and widths of phonon stop bands can be obtained by temporal and spatio-temporal Fourier analysis. We further demonstrate how one can follow the temporal evolution of phononic eigenstates in k-space using data from phononic-crystal waveguides as an example.

Phoxonic Hybrid Superlattice

We studied experimentally and theoretically the direction-dependent elastic and electromagnetic wave propagation in a supported film of hybrid PMMA (poly[methyl-methacrylate])-TiO2 superlattice (SL). In the direction normal to the layers, this one-dimensional periodic structure opens propagation band gaps for both hypersonic (GHz) phonons and near-UV photons. The high mismatch of elastic and optical impedance results in a large dual phoxonic band gap. The presence of defects inherent to the spin-coating fabrication technique is sensitively manifested in the band gap region. Utilizing Brillouin light scattering, phonon propagation along the layers was observed to be distinctly different from propagation normal to them and can, under certain conditions (SL thickness and substrate elasticity), reveal the nanomechanical properties of the constituent layers. Besides the first realization of unidirectional phoxonic behavior, hybrid (soft-hard) periodic materials are a promising simple platform for opto-acoustic interactions and applications such as filters and Bragg mirrors.

Single-crystal Brillouin spectroscopy with CO2 laser heating and variable q

We describe a Brillouin spectroscopy system integrated with CO2 laser-heating and Raman spectroscopic capabilities. Temperature is determined by measurements of the grey-body thermal radiation emitted by the hot sample, with the system response calibrated relative to a standard tungsten ribbon lamp. High-pressure laser-heating Brillouin scattering measurements of acoustic velocities on liquid water and ice compressed in a diamond-anvil cell were performed at temperatures up to 2500 ± 150 K at high pressure. Single-crystal laser-heating Brillouin measurements were made on the (111) plane of San Carlos olivine at ∼13 GPa, 1300 ± 200 K. The pressure as measured by ruby fluorescence is shown to be within ±0.5 GPa of the pressure on the olivine sample during laser heating when KCl and KBr are used as pressure-transmitting media. In addition, the system is designed for continuously variable scattering angles from forward scattering (near 0° scattering angle) up to near back scattering (∼141°). This novel setup allows us to probe a wide range of wave vectors q for investigation of phonon dispersion on, for example, crystals with large unit cells (on the scale of hundreds of nm).

High-performance TiO2 nanoparticle/DOPA-polymer composites

Many natural materials are complex composites whose mechanical properties are often outstanding considering the weak constituents from which they are assembled. Nacre, made of inorganic (CaCO3 ) and organic constituents, is a textbook example because of its strength and toughness, which are related to its hierarchical structure and its well-defined organic-inorganic interface. Emulating the construction principles of nacre using simple inorganic materials and polymers is essential for understanding how chemical composition and structure determine biomaterial functions. A hard multilayered nanocomposite is assembled based on alternating layers of TiO2 nanoparticles and a 3-hydroxy-tyramine (DOPA) substituted polymer (DOPA-polymer), strongly cemented together by chelation through infiltration of the polymer into the TiO2 mesocrystal. With a Young's modulus of 17.5 ± 2.5 GPa and a hardness of 1.1 ± 0.3 GPa the resulting material exhibits high resistance against elastic as well as plastic deformation. A key feature leading to the high strength is the strong adhesion of the DOPA-polymer to the TiO2 nanoparticles.

Anisotropic hypersonic phonon propagation in films of aligned ellipsoids

A material with anisotropic elastic mechanical properties and a direction-dependent hypersonic band gap is fabricated using ac electric field-directed convective self-assembly of colloidal ellipsoids. The frequency of the gap, which is detected in the direction perpendicular to particle alignment and entirely absent parallel to alignment, and the effective sound velocities can be tuned by the particle aspect ratio. We hypothesize that the band gap originates from the primary eigenmode peak, the m-splitted (s,1,2) mode, of the particle resonating with the effective medium. These results reveal the potential for powerful control of the hypersonic phononic band diagram by combining anisotropic particles and self-assembly.

Controlling the thermomechanical behavior of nanoparticle/polymer films

We show that the mesoscale (∼200 nm) thermomechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites formed from silica nanoparticles (NPs) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) critically depend on their interfacial structure, which can be controlled by the casting solvent. The composite films are solvent cast from either pyridine (PYR) or methylethylketone (MEK), with uniform NP spatial distribution obtained in both cases. In the films cast from MEK, our previous work has shown that a bound layer of P2VP is formed at the NP surfaces, while no such bound layer is formed when PYR is used as the casting solvent. In PYR as-cast films, Brillouin light scattering reveals a single acoustic phonon with its longitudinal sound velocity increasing with NP loading. This implies a homogeneous mixture of the NP and the polymer on the mesoscopic scales for all compositions examined. However, in the MEK as-cast films, two longitudinal and two transverse acoustic phonons are observed at NP loadings above ∼20 wt % (or ∼11 vol %), reminiscent of two metastable microscopic phases. The dense microphase is attributed to the bridging of NPs by P2VP chains, whereas for the softer medium, we conjecture that there exists an interfacial lower density P2VP layer whose longitudinal sound velocity barely changes with NP loading. These solvent-induced differences in the (elastic) mechanical behavior disappear upon thermal annealing, suggesting that these nanocomposite interfacial structures in the as-cast state (far from equilibrium) locally approach equilibrium (i.e., near equilibrium after annealing). Consistent with these conclusions, the abrupt decrease of the longitudinal sound velocity with temperature occurs at a single glass transition temperature for the annealed nanocomposites irrespective of the casting solvent used, which assumes only a slightly higher (∼5 K at 45 wt % or ∼29 vol %) value than that in bulk P2VP. The results emphasize the important role of solvent in determining the interfacial structure of nanocomposites, which can be used to tailor their thermomechanical behavior.

Anisotropic lattice expansion of three-dimensional colloidal crystals and its impact on hypersonic phonon band gaps

We report anisotropic expansion of self-assembled colloidal polystyrene-poly(dimethylsiloxane) crystals and its impact on the phonon band structure at hypersonic frequencies. The structural expansion was achieved by a multistep infiltration-polymerization process. Such a process expands the interplanar lattice distance 17% after 8 cycles whereas the in-plane distance remains unaffected. The variation of hypersonic phonon band structure induced by the anisotropic lattice expansion was recorded by Brillouin measurements. In the sample before expansion, a phononic band gap between 3.7 and 4.4 GHz is observed; after 17% structural expansion, the gap is shifted to a lower frequency between 3.5 and 4.0 GHz. This study offers a facile approach to control the macroscopic structure of colloidal crystals with great potential in designing tunable phononic devices.

25th anniversary article: ordered polymer structures for the engineering of photons and phonons

The engineering of optical and acoustic material functionalities via construction of ordered local and global architectures on various length scales commensurate with and well below the characteristic length scales of photons and phonons in the material is an indispensable and powerful means to develop novel materials. In the current mature status of photonics, polymers hold a pivotal role in various application areas such as light-emission, sensing, energy, and displays, with exclusive advantages despite their relatively low dielectric constants. Moreover, in the nascent field of phononics, polymers are expected to be a superior material platform due to the ability for readily fabricated complex polymer structures possessing a wide range of mechanical behaviors, complete phononic bandgaps, and resonant architectures. In this review, polymer-centric photonic and phononic crystals and metamaterials are highlighted, and basic concepts, fabrication techniques, selected functional polymers, applications, and emerging ideas are introduced.

Defect-controlled hypersound propagation in hybrid superlattices

We employ spontaneous Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and detailed theoretical calculations to reveal and identify elastic excitations inside the band gap of hypersonic hybrid superlattices. Surface and cavity modes, their strength and anticrossing are unambiguously documented and fully controlled by layer thickness, elasticity, and sequence design. This new soft matter based superlattice platform allows facile engineering of the density of states and opens new pathways to tunable phoxonic crystals.
