Abstract
The time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) vertex of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) makes it possible to extend TDHF theory to charged excitations. Here we assess its performance by applying it to spherical atoms in their neutral electronic configuration. On a theoretical level, we recast the TDHF vertex as a reducible vertex, highlighting the emergence of a self-energy expansion purely in orders of the bare Coulomb interaction; then, on a numerical level, we present results for polarizabilities, ionization energies (IEs), and photoemission satellites. We confirm the superiority of THDF over simpler methods such as the random phase approximation for the prediction of atomic polarizabilities. We then find that the TDHF vertex reliably provides better IEs than GW and low-order self-energies do in the light-atom, few-electron regime; its performance degrades in heavier, many-electron atoms instead, where an expansion in orders of an unscreened Coulomb interaction becomes less justified. New relevant features are introduced in the satellite spectrum by the TDHF vertex, but the experimental spectra are not fully reproduced due to a missing account of nonlinear effects connected to hole relaxation. We also explore various truncations of the self-energy given by the TDHF vertex, but do not find them to be more convenient than low-order approximations such as GW and second Born (2B), suggesting that vertex corrections should be carried out consistently both in the self-energy and in the polarizability.

Abstract
Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) is the most widely-used electronic structure method for excited states, due to a favorable combination of low cost and semi-quantitative accuracy in many contexts, even if there are well recognized limitations. This Perspective describes various ways in which excited states from TD-DFT calculations can be visualized and analyzed, both qualitatively and quantitatively. This includes not just orbitals and densities but also well-defined statistical measures of electron-hole separation and of Frenkel-type exciton delocalization. Emphasis is placed on mathematical connections between methods that have often been discussed separately. Particular attention is paid to charge-transfer diagnostics, which provide indicators of when TD-DFT may not be trustworthy due to its categorical failure to describe long-range electron transfer. Measures of exciton size and charge separation that are directly connected to the underlying transition density are recommended over more ad hoc metrics for quantifying charge-transfer character.

Abstract
Layered hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have intriguing optoelectronic properties, but some of the most interesting perovskite systems, such as defective, disordered, or mixed perovskites, require multiple unit cells to describe and are not accessible within state-of-the-art ab initio theoretical approaches for computing excited states. The principal bottleneck is the calculation of the dielectric matrix, which scales formally as O(N4). We develop here a fully ab initio approximation for the dielectric matrix, known as IPSA-2C, in which we separate the polarizability of the organic/inorganic layers into minimal building blocks, thus circumventing the undesirable power-law scaling. The IPSA-2C method reproduces the quasi-particle band structures and absorption spectra for a series of Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites to high accuracy, by including critical nonlocal effects neglected in simpler models, and sheds light on the complicated interplay of screening between the organic and inorganic sublattices.

Abstract
The ab initio GW plus Bethe–Salpeter equation (GW-BSE, where G is the one particle Green's function and W is the screened Coulomb interaction) approach has emerged as a leading method for predicting excitations in both solids and molecules with a predictive power contingent upon several factors. Among these factors are the (1) generalized Kohn–Sham eigensystem used to construct the GW self-energy and to solve the BSE and (2) the efficacy and suitability of the Tamm–Dancoff approximation. Here, we present a detailed benchmark study of low-lying singlet excitations from a generalized Kohn–Sham (gKS) starting point based on an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OTRSH) functional. We show that the use of this gKS starting point with one-shot G0W0 and G0W0-BSE leads to the lowest mean absolute errors (MAEs) and mean signed errors (MSEs), with respect to high-accuracy reference values, demonstrated in the literature thus far for the ionization potentials of the GW100 benchmark set and for low-lying neutral excitations of Thiel’s set molecules in the gas phase, without the need for self-consistency. The MSEs and MAEs of one-shot G0W0-BSE@OTRSH excitation energies are comparable to or lower than those obtained with other functional starting points after self-consistency. Additionally, we compare these results with linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations and find GW-BSE to be superior to TDDFT when calculations are based on the same exchange-correlation functional. This work demonstrates tuned range-separated hybrids used in combination with GW and GW-BSE can greatly suppress starting point dependence for molecules, leading to accuracy similar to that for higher-order wavefunction-based theories for molecules without the need for costlier iterations to self-consistency.

Abstract
The efficiency of plasmonic metallic nanoparticles in harvesting and concentrating light energy in their proximity triggers a wealth of important and intriguing phenomena. For example, spectroscopies are able to reach single-molecule and intramolecule sensitivities, and important chemical reactions can be effectively photocatalyzed. For the real-time description of the coupled dynamics of a molecule's electronic system and of a plasmonic nanoparticle, a methodology has been recently proposed (J. Phys. Chem. C. 120, 2016, 28774-28781) which combines the classical description of the nanoparticle as a polarizable continuum medium with a quantum-mechanical description of the molecule treated at the time-dependent configuration interaction (TDCI) level. In this work, we extend this methodology by describing the molecule using many-body perturbation theory: the molecule's excitation energies, transition dipoles, and potentials computed at the GW/Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) level. This allows us to overcome current limitations of TDCI in terms of achievable accuracy without compromising on the accessible molecular sizes. We illustrate the developed scheme by characterizing the coupled nanoparticle/molecule dynamics of two prototype molecules, LiCN and p-nitroaniline.

Abstract
In this work, a theoretical and computational set of tools to study and analyze time-resolved electron dynamics in molecules, under the influence of one or more external pulses, is presented. By coupling electronic-structure methods with the resolution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we developed and implemented the time-resolved induced density of the electronic wavepacket, the time-resolved formulation of the differential projection density of states (ΔPDOS), and of transition contribution map (TCM) to look at the single-electron orbital occupation and localization change in time. Moreover, to further quantify the possible charge transfer, we also defined the energy-integrated ΔPDOS and the fragment-projected TCM. We have used time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT), as implemented in ADF software, and the Bethe-Salpeter equation, as provided by MolGW package, for the description of the electronic excited states. This suite of postprocessing tools also provides the time evolution of the electronic states of the system of interest. To illustrate the usefulness of these postprocessing tools, excited-state populations have been computed for HBDI (the chromophore of GFP) and DNQDI molecules interacting with a sequence of two pulses. Time-resolved descriptors have been applied to study the time-resolved electron dynamics of HBDI, DNQDI, LiCN (being a model system for dipole switching upon highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) electronic excitation), and Ag22. The computational analysis tools presented in this article can be employed to help the interpretation of fast and ultrafast spectroscopies on molecular, supramolecular, and composite systems.

Abstract
The nature of optical excitations and the spatial extent of excitons in organic semiconductors, both of which determine exciton diffusion and carrier mobilities, are key factors for the proper understanding and tuning of material performances. Using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we investigate the excitonic properties of meso-tetraphenyl porphyrin-Zn(II) crystals. We find that several bands contribute to the optical absorption spectra, beyond the four main ones considered here as the analogue to the four frontier molecular orbitals of the Gouterman model commonly adopted for the isolated molecule. By using many-body perturbation theory in the GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, we interpret the experimental large optical anisotropy as being due to the interplay between long- and short-range intermolecular interactions. In addition, both localized and delocalized excitons in the π-stacking direction are demonstrated to determine the optical response, in agreement with recent experimental observations reported for organic crystals with similar molecular packing.

Abstract
The development of light-harvesting devices based on molecular materials depends critically on the ability to focus the electronic oscillator strength of molecules into the UV-vis spectral window. Typical molecular chromophores have only about 1% of their total electronic oscillator strength in this spectral region and thus perform at a small fraction of their possible effectiveness. This theoretical study finds that the electronic oscillator strength of polyenes in the UV-vis region may be enhanced by 1 order of magnitude using electrostatic fields, motivating specific experimental studies of oscillator strength focusing. We find scaling relationships between the polyene length, the intensity of the applied field, and the field-induced increase in oscillator strength that are useful for the implementation of light-harvesting strategies based on polyenes.

Abstract
Graphdiyne-based nanotubes (GDNTs) are a novel type of carbon nanotubes. While conventional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are generated by rolling graphene sheets, GDNTs are generated by rolling sheets that are similar to graphene but where the edges are elongated by the introduction of additional acetylene bonds between vertices (C6 aromatic rings). Such nanotubes are predicted to have many useful practical applications, but a thorough understanding of the relationship between their structure and their physical properties is still missing. We present a theoretical study of the electronic and optical properties of GDNTs. The structural, electronic, and optical properties of GDNTs with different diameters (i.e., 2-10 additional acetylene bonds) have been studied systematically by using density function theory (DFT) and self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) and by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE), with and without considering the electron-hole interactions. The results indicate that the GDNTs are semiconductors with the direct band gap in close range, which is beneficial for photoelectronic devices and applications. Moreover, the absorption spectra of the GDNTs with different edge structures, (armchair, and zigzag) revealed little differences between the optical spectra of armchair and zigzag GDNTs, which could mean that fine separation between those structures (a process that is likely difficult and expensive in practice) will not be necessary. Importantly, the nanotubes were highly stable based on their cohesive energies, and their exciton binding energies were as large as about ~ 1 eV. From a methodological point of view, SCC-DFTB was found to be in agreement with more elaborate DFT calculations for most systems. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
yambo is an open source project aimed at studying excited state properties of condensed matter systems from first principles using many-body methods. As input, yambo requires ground state electronic structure data as computed by density functional theory codes such as Quantum ESPRESSO and Abinit. yambo's capabilities include the calculation of linear response quantities (both independent-particle and including electron-hole interactions), quasi-particle corrections based on the GW formalism, optical absorption, and other spectroscopic quantities. Here we describe recent developments ranging from the inclusion of important but oft-neglected physical effects such as electron-phonon interactions to the implementation of a real-time propagation scheme for simulating linear and non-linear optical properties. Improvements to numerical algorithms and the user interface are outlined. Particular emphasis is given to the new and efficient parallel structure that makes it possible to exploit modern high performance computing architectures. Finally, we demonstrate the possibility to automate workflows by interfacing with the yambopy and AiiDA software tools.

Abstract
Pentacene is one of the most studied organic materials and in particular its optical properties have been the subject of intense research during the last two decades. In spite of such a widespread interest and of the extensive knowledge achieved so far, a number of issues are still debated. One of the most relevant questions concerns the role of polymorphism and how it affects the lowest-energy exciton, which appears in the visible region and is subject to a sizable Davydov splitting. We address this problem in a combined theoretical and experimental work, where the optical absorption properties of three pentacene polymorphs are investigated within the whole energy range of visible light. Optical spectra computed from first principles in the framework of many-body perturbation theory are directly compared with the polarization-resolved absorbance, measured for three different pentacene phases (the two bulk polymorphs and the thin-film phase). In this way, we unambiguously identify the two Davydov components of the first exciton and the optical fingerprints of each considered phase. With very good agreement between theory and experiment, we show that all polymorphs exhibit common features at the absorption onset, while phase-dependent characteristics appear only above 2 eV. We discuss the character of the lowest-lying singlet and triplet excitons, including dark ones, highlighting the contributions from the electronic bands and the role of the electron-hole interaction and of the local-field effects.

Abstract
We review state-of-the-art electronic structure methods based both on wave function theory (WFT) and density functional theory (DFT). Strengths and limitations of both the wave function and density functional based approaches are discussed, and modern attempts to combine these two methods are presented. The challenges in modeling excited-state chemistry using both single-reference and multireference methods are described. Topics covered include background, combining density functional theory with single-configuration wave function theory, generalized Kohn-Sham (KS) theory, global hybrids, range-separated hybrids, local hybrids, using KS orbitals in many-body theory (including calculations of the self-energy and the GW approximation), Bethe-Salpeter equation, algorithms to accelerate GW calculations, combining DFT with multiconfigurational WFT, orbital-dependent correlation functionals based on multiconfigurational WFT, building multiconfigurational wave functions from KS configurations, adding correlation functionals to multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (MCSCF) energies, combining DFT with configuration-interaction singles by means of time-dependent DFT, using range separation to combine DFT with MCSCF, embedding multiconfigurational WFT in DFT, and multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory.

Abstract
Organic materials are promising candidates for advanced optoelectronics and are used in light-emitting diodes and photovoltaics. However, the underlying mechanisms allowing the formation of excited states responsible for device functionality, such as exciton generation and charge separation, are insufficiently understood. This is partly due to the wide range of existing crystalline polymorphs depending on sample preparation conditions. Here, we determine the linear optical response of thin-film single-crystal perylene samples of distinct polymorphs in transmission and reflection geometries. The sample quality allows for unprecedented high-resolution spectroscopy, which offers an ideal opportunity for judicious comparison between theory and experiment. Excellent agreement with first-principles calculations for the absorption based on the GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) approach of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) is obtained, from which a clear picture of the low-lying excitations in perylene emerges, including evidence of an exciton-polariton stopband, as well as an assessment of the commonly used Tamm-Dancoff approximation to the GW-BSE approach. Our findings on this well-controlled system can guide understanding and development of advanced molecular solids and functionalization for applications.

A new energy transfer channel from carotenoids to chlorophylls in purple bacteria. Nat Commun 2017; 8:71. Abstract
It is unclear whether there is an intermediate dark state between the S2 and S1 states of carotenoids. Previous two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy measurements support its existence and its involvement in the energy transfer from carotenoids to chlorophylls, but there is still considerable debate on the origin of this dark state and how it regulates the energy transfer process. Here we use ab initio calculations on excited-state dynamics and simulated two-dimensional electronic spectrum of carotenoids from purple bacteria to provide evidence supporting that the dark state may be assigned to a new Ag+ state. Our calculations also indicate that groups on the conjugation backbone of carotenoids may substantially affect the excited-state levels and the energy transfer process. These results contribute to a better understanding of carotenoid excited states. Carotenoids harvest energy from light and transfer it to chlorophylls during photosynthesis. Here, Feng et al. perform ab initio calculations on excited-state dynamics and simulated 2D electronic spectrum of carotenoids, supporting the existence of a new excited state in carotenoids.

Abstract
The helium atom is the simplest many-body electronic system provided by nature. The exact solution to the Schrödinger equation is known for helium ground and excited states, and it represents a benchmark for any many-body methodology. Here, we check the ab initio many-body GW approximation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) against the exact solution for helium. Starting from the Hartree-Fock method, we show that the GW and the BSE yield impressively accurate results on excitation energies and oscillator strength, systematically improving the time-dependent Hartree-Fock method. These findings suggest that the accuracy of the BSE and GW approximations is not significantly limited by self-interaction and self-screening problems even in this few electron limit. We further discuss our results in comparison to those obtained by time-dependent density-functional theory.

Abstract
We have evaluated the accuracy of the Bethe-Salpeter singlet-triplet transition energies as well as singlet-triplet and triplet-triplet splittings for 20 organic molecules, using as reference the CC3 values determined by Thiel and co-workers with both the TZVP and aug-cc-pVTZ atomic basis sets. Our excitation energies are obtained on the basis of GW quasiparticle energy levels that are self-consistently converged with respect to the starting DFT eigenvalues. In its current form, BSE/GW is often unable to provide a balanced description of both singlet and triplet excited-states. While the singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet energy separations are obtained accurately, triplets are located too close in energy from the ground-state, by typically -0.55 eV when using standard functionals to generate the starting eigenstates. Applying the Tamm-Dancoff approximation upshifts the BSE triplet energies and allows reducing this error to ca. -0.40 eV, while using M06-HF eigenstates allows a further increase and hence a reduction of the error for triplet states, but at the cost of larger errors for the singlet excited-states. At this stage, the most accurate TD-DFT estimates therefore remain competitive for computing singlet-triplet transition energies. Indeed, with M06-2X, irrespective of the application or not of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation and of the selected atomic basis set, the deviations obtained with TD-DFT are rather small.

Abstract
New materials for OLED applications with low singlet-triplet energy splitting have been recently synthesized in order to allow for the conversion of triplet into singlet excitons (emitting light) via a Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) process, which involves excited-states with a non-negligible amount of Charge-Transfer (CT). The accurate modeling of these states with Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT), the most used method so far because of the favorable trade-off between accuracy and computational cost, is however particularly challenging. We carefully address this issue here by considering materials with small (high) singlet-triplet gap acting as emitter (host) in OLEDs and by comparing the accuracy of TD-DFT and the corresponding Tamm-Dancoff Approximation (TDA), which is found to greatly reduce error bars with respect to experiments thanks to better estimates for the lowest singlet-triplet transition. Finally, we quantitatively correlate the singlet-triplet splitting values with the extent of CT, using for it a simple metric extracted from calculations with double-hybrid functionals, that might be applied in further molecular engineering studies.

Abstract
We present a solution of the full time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) eigenvalue equation in the linear response formalism exhibiting a linear-scaling computational complexity with system size, without relying on the simplifying Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA). The implementation relies on representing the occupied and unoccupied subspaces with two different sets of in situ optimised localised functions, yielding a very compact and efficient representation of the transition density matrix of the excitation with the accuracy associated with a systematic basis set. The TDDFT eigenvalue equation is solved using a preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm that is very memory-efficient. The algorithm is validated on a small test molecule and a good agreement with results obtained from standard quantum chemistry packages is found, with the preconditioner yielding a significant improvement in convergence rates. The method developed in this work is then used to reproduce experimental results of the absorption spectrum of bacteriochlorophyll in an organic solvent, where it is demonstrated that the TDA fails to reproduce the main features of the low energy spectrum, while the full TDDFT equation yields results in good qualitative agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, the need for explicitly including parts of the solvent into the TDDFT calculations is highlighted, making the treatment of large system sizes necessary that are well within reach of the capabilities of the algorithm introduced here. Finally, the linear-scaling properties of the algorithm are demonstrated by computing the lowest excitation energy of bacteriochlorophyll in solution. The largest systems considered in this work are of the same order of magnitude as a variety of widely studied pigment-protein complexes, opening up the possibility of studying their properties without having to resort to any semiclassical approximations to parts of the protein environment.

Abstract
We study within the many-body Green's function GW and Bethe-Salpeter formalisms the excitation energies of a paradigmatic model dipeptide, focusing on the four lowest-lying local and charge-transfer excitations. Our GW calculations are performed at the self-consistent level, updating first the quasiparticle energies, and further the single-particle wavefunctions within the static Coulomb-hole plus screened-exchange approximation to the GW self-energy operator. Important level crossings, as compared to the starting Kohn-Sham LDA spectrum, are identified. Our final Bethe-Salpeter singlet excitation energies are found to agree, within 0.07 eV, with CASPT2 reference data, except for one charge-transfer state where the discrepancy can be as large as 0.5 eV. Our results agree best with LC-BLYP and CAM-B3LYP calculations with enhanced long-range exchange, with a 0.1 eV mean absolute error. This has been achieved employing a parameter-free formalism applicable to metallic or insulating extended or finite systems.

Abstract
Charge-transfer (CT) excited states play an important role in the excited-state dynamics of DNA in aqueous solution. However, there is still much controversy on their energies. By ab initio many-body Green's function theory, together with classical molecular dynamics simulations, we confirm the existence of CT states at the lower energy side of the optical absorption maximum in aqueous DNA as observed in experiments. We find that the hydration shell can exert strong effects (∼1 eV) on both the electronic structure and CT states of DNA molecules through dipole electric fields. In this case, the solvent cannot be simply regarded as a macroscopic screening medium as usual. The influence of base stacking and base pairing on the CT states is also discussed.

Abstract
The electronic and optical properties of semiconducting silicon nanotubes (SiNTs) are studied by means of the many-body Green's function method, i.e., GW approximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation. In these studied structures, i.e., (4,4), (6,6) and (10,0) SiNTs, self-energy effects are enhanced giving rise to large quasi-particle (QP) band gaps due to the confinement effect. The strong electron-electron (e-e) correlations broaden the band gaps of the studied SiNTs from 0.65, 0.28 and 0.05 eV at DFT level to 1.9, 1.22 and 0.79 eV at GW level. The Coulomb electron-hole (e-h) interactions significantly modify optical absorption properties obtained at noninteracting-particle level with the formation of bound excitons with considerable binding energies (of the order of 1 eV) assigned: the binding energies of the armchair (4,4), (6,6) and zigzag (10,0) SiNTs are 0.92, 1.1 and 0.6 eV, respectively. Results in this work are useful for understanding the physics and applications in silicon-based nanoscale device components.

Abstract
We study, using the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, the singlet excitation energies of the zincbacteriochlorin-bacteriochlorin dyad, a paradigmatic photosynthetic complex. In great contrast with standard time-dependent density functional theory calculations with (semi)local kernels, charge transfer excitations are correctly located above the intramolecular Q-band transitions found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. Further, the asymptotic Coulomb behavior towards the true quasiparticle gap for charge transfer excitations at long distance is correctly reproduced, showing that the present scheme allows us to study with the same accuracy intramolecular and charge transfer excitations at various spatial ranges and screening environments without any adjustable parameter.

Abstract
The classic density-functional theory (DFT) formalism introduced by Hohenberg, Kohn, and Sham in the mid-1960s is based on the idea that the complicated N-electron wave function can be replaced with the mathematically simpler 1-electron charge density in electronic structure calculations of the ground stationary state. As such, ordinary DFT cannot treat time-dependent (TD) problems nor describe excited electronic states. In 1984, Runge and Gross proved a theorem making TD-DFT formally exact. Information about electronic excited states may be obtained from this theory through the linear response (LR) theory formalism. Beginning in the mid-1990s, LR-TD-DFT became increasingly popular for calculating absorption and other spectra of medium- and large-sized molecules. Its ease of use and relatively good accuracy has now brought LR-TD-DFT to the forefront for this type of application. As the number and the diversity of applications of TD-DFT have grown, so too has our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the approximate functionals commonly used for TD-DFT. The objective of this article is to continue where a previous review of TD-DFT in Volume 55 of the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry left off and highlight some of the problems and solutions from the point of view of applied physical chemistry. Because doubly-excited states have a particularly important role to play in bond dissociation and formation in both thermal and photochemistry, particular emphasis is placed on the problem of going beyond or around the TD-DFT adiabatic approximation, which limits TD-DFT calculations to nominally singly-excited states.
