Biomolecular control over local gating in bilayer graphene induced by ferritin

Electrical field-induced charge modulation in graphene-based devices at the nanoscale with ultrahigh density carrier accumulation is important for various practical applications. In bilayer graphene (BLG), inversion symmetry can simply be broken by an external electric field. However, control over charge carrier density at the nanometer scale is a challenging task. We demonstrate local gating of BLG in the nanometer range by adsorption of AfFtnAA (which is a bioengineered ferritin, an iron-storing globular protein with ∅ = 12 nm). Low-temperature electrical transport measurements with field-effect transistors with these AfFtnAA/BLG surfaces show hysteresis with two Dirac peaks. One peak at a gate voltage V_BG = 35 V is associated with pristine BLG, while the second peak at V_BG = 5 V results from local doping by ferritin. This charge trapping at the biomolecular length scale offers a straightforward and non-destructive method to alter the local electronic structure of BLG.

A Study on Technology Competition of Graphene Biomedical Technology Based on Patent Analysis

Graphene, with high biocompatibility, physiological solubility and stability, has been reported as an emerging material for biomedical applications such as biosensors, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. Recently, identifying the technological competition (TC) of graphene biomedical technology has received worldwide attention from stakeholders. However, few studies have attached great importance to review the TC of this field by the analysis of patents. The main objective of this study is to develop a new and comprehensive method to investigate TC in a given technology field by conducting a patent review and then employing a patent roadmap to dig out the technology opportunity. The effectiveness of the approach is verified with the case study on graphene biomedical technology. Compared to previous research, this study makes the following important contributions. First, this study provides a new and systematic framework for the dynamic analysis of TC in a given technology field. It also extends the research perspectives of TC for industry, assignees, and technology, employs a patent roadmap to dig out technology opportunities, and enables stakeholders to understand TC from a dynamic perspective. Second, this study integrates patent analysis with a patent roadmap that has not appeared in existing methodologies of patent review. Third, it first introduces indicators (e.g., high value patent and competition position of top assignees) to the previous patent roadmap and provides a new methodology for patent roadmaps from a country level and assignee level. Finally, this study provides useful information for stakeholders interested in graphene biomedical technology, helps them to find new technology opportunities in this field, encourages them to determine the direction of future research, and has important significance for its application to diverse other emerging technologies.

Metallo-Curcumin-Conjugated DNA Complexes Induces Preferential Prostate Cancer Cells Cytotoxicity and Pause Growth of Bacterial Cells

DNA nanotechnology can be used to create intricate DNA structures due to the ability to direct the molecular assembly of nanostructures through a bottom-up approach. Here, we propose nanocarriers composed of both synthetic and natural DNA for drug delivery. The topological, optical characteristics, and interaction studies of Cu²⁺/Ni²⁺/Zn²⁺-curcumin-conjugated DNA complexes were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and mass spectroscopy. The maximum release of metallo-curcumin conjugates from the DNA complexes, triggered by switching the pH, was found in an acidic medium. The bacterial growth curves of E. coli and B. subtilis displayed a prolonged lag phase when tested with the metallo-curcumin-conjugated DNA complexes. We also tested the in vitro cytotoxicity of the metallo-curcumin-conjugated DNA complexes to prostate cancer cells using an MTS assay, which indicated potent growth inhibition of the cells. Finally, we studied the cellular uptake of the complexes, revealing that DNA complexes with Cu²⁺/Ni²⁺-curcumin exhibited brighter fluorescence than those with Zn²⁺-curcumin.

Bioinorganic Nanohybrid Catalyst for Multistep Synthesis of Acetaminophen, an Analgesic

A bioinorganic nanohybrid catalyst was synthesized by combining esterase with a platinum nanoparticle (PtNP). The combination of two catalysts resulted in enhanced catalytic activities, esterase hydrolysis, and hydrogenation in PtNPs, as compared to each catalyst alone. This hybrid catalyst can be successfully used in the multistep synthesis of acetaminophen (paracetamol), an analgesic and antipyretic drug, in a one-pot reaction with high yield and efficacy within a short time, demonstrating that the nanobiohybrid catalyst offers advantages in the synthesis of fine chemicals in industrial applications.

Nanoparticle Assembly and Gelatin Binding Mediated by Triple Helical Collagen Mimetic Peptide

Peptide-conjugated nanoparticles (NPs) have promising potential for applications in biosensing, diagnosis, and therapeutics because of their appropriate size, unique self-assembly, and specific substrate-binding properties. However, controlled assembly and selective target binding are difficult to achieve with simple peptides on NP surfaces because high surface energy makes NPs prone to self-aggregate and adhere nonspecifically. Here, we report the self-assembly and gelatin binding properties of collagen mimetic peptide (CMP) conjugated gold NPs (CMP-NPs). We show that the orientation of CMPs displayed on the NP surface can control NP assembly either by promoting or hindering triple helical folding between CMPs of neighboring NPs. We also show that CMP-NPs can specifically bind to denatured collagen by forming triple-helical hybrids between denatured collagen strands and CMPs, demonstrating their potential use for detection and selective removal of gelatin from protein mixtures. CMP conjugated NPs offer a simple and effective method for NP assembly and for targeting denatured collagens with high specificity. Therefore, they may lead to new types of functional nanomaterials for detection and study of denatured collagen associated with diseases characterized by high levels of collagen degradation.

High second-order nonlinear response of platinum nanoflowers: the role of surface corrugation

Platinum nanoflowers (PtNFs) were elaborated using the seed-mediated growth technique applied to monodisperse platinum nanoparticles (∼3.0 nm) synthesized by the chemical reduction method. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the formation of face-centered-cubic platinum nanocrystals. We report the Harmonic Light Scattering (HLS) properties of PtNFs for six different diameters (∼7.0; 8.0; 10.0; 14.0; 20.0 and 31.0 nm). From these HLS data we infer, for the first time, large hyperpolarizability β values of PtNFs. These very high β values of PtNFs are assigned mainly to highly corrugated surfaces for nanoparticles with irregular shapes.

Photocurrent enhancement of SiNW-FETs by integrating protein-shelled CdSe quantum dots

We proposed a new strategy to increase the photoresponsivity of silicon NW field-effect transistors (FETs) by integrating CdSe quantum dots (QDs) using protein shells (PSs). CdSe QDs were synthesized using ClpP, a bacterial protease, as protein shells to control the size and stability of QD and to facilitate the mounting of QDs on SiNWs. The photocurrent of SiNW-FETs in response to light at a wavelength of 480 nm was enhanced by a factor of 6.5 after integrating CdSe QDs because of the coupling of the optical properties of SiNWs and QDs. As a result, the photoresponsivity to 480 nm light reached up to 3.1 × 10(6), the highest value compared to other SiNW-based devices in the visible light range.
