Abstract
The electrical control and readout of molecular spin states are key for high-density storage. Expectations are that electrically-driven spin and vibrational excitations in a molecule should give rise to new conductance features in the presence of magnetic anisotropy, offering alternative routes to study and, ultimately, manipulate molecular magnetism. Here, we use inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy to promote and detect the excited spin states of a prototypical molecule with magnetic anisotropy. We demonstrate the existence of a vibron-assisted spin excitation that can exceed in energy and in amplitude a simple excitation among spin states. This excitation, which can be quenched by structural changes in the magnetic molecule, is explained using first-principles calculations that include dynamical electronic correlations.

Abstract
The active control of a molecular spin represents one of the main challenges in molecular spintronics. Up to now spin manipulation has been achieved through the modification of the molecular structure either by chemical doping or by external stimuli. However, the spin of a molecule adsorbed on a surface depends primarily on the interaction between its localized orbitals and the electronic states of the substrate. Here we change the effective spin of a single molecule by modifying the molecule/metal interface in a controlled way using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. A nickelocene molecule reversibly switches from a spin 1 to 1/2 when varying the electrode–electrode distance from tunnel to contact regime. This switching is experimentally evidenced by inelastic and elastic spin-flip mechanisms observed in reproducible conductance measurements and understood using first principle calculations. Our work demonstrates the active control over the spin state of single molecule devices through interface manipulation. Manipulating spin states of molecules in a controllable manner is essential to develop the molecule-based spintronics technologies. Here, Ormaza et al. show how to use the interaction between a single metallocene molecule and a metallic surface to reversibly switch spin from 1 to ½ in a junction.

Abstract
The manipulation of the molecular spin state by atom doping is an attractive strategy to confer desirable magnetic properties to molecules. Here, we present the formation of novel magnetic metallocenes by following this approach. In particular, two different on-surface procedures to build isolated and layer-integrated Co-ferrocene (CoFc) molecules on a metallic substrate via atomic manipulation and atom deposition are shown. The structure as well as the electronic properties of the so-formed molecule are investigated combining scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy with density functional theory calculations. It is found that unlike single ferrocene a CoFc molecule possesses a magnetic moment as revealed by the Kondo effect. These results correspond to the first controlled procedure toward the development of tailored metallocene-based nanowires with a desired chemical composition, which are predicted to be promising materials for molecular spintronics.

Abstract
As one of the most promising building blocks in molecular spintronics, spin crossover (SCO) complexes have attracted increasing attention due to their magnetic bistability between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. Here, we explore the electronic structures and transport properties of SCO magnet Fe2 complexes with three different spin-pair configurations, namely [LS-LS], [LS-HS], and [HS-HS], by performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function technique. Our calculations clearly reveal that the SCO magnet Fe2 complexes should display two-step spin transitions triggered by external stimuli, i.e. temperature or light, which confirm the previous phenomenological model and agree well with previous experimental measurements. Based on the calculated transport results, we observe a nearly perfect spin-filtering effect and negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior integrated in the SCO magnet Fe2 junction with the [HS-HS] configuration. The current through the [HS-HS] SCO magnet Fe2 complex under a small bias voltage is mainly contributed by the spin-down electrons, which is significantly larger than those of the [LS-LS] and [LS-HS] cases. The bias-dependent transmissions are responsible for the observed NDR effect. These theoretical findings suggest that SCO Fe2 complexes hold potential applications in molecular spintronic devices.

Abstract
The understanding of how the spin moment of a magnetic molecule transfers to a carbon nanotube, when the molecule is attached to it, is crucial for designing novel supramolecular spin devices. Here we explore such an issue by modeling the spin transport of a single-walled carbon nanotube grafted with one nickelocene molecule. In particular we investigate how the electron transport becomes spin-polarized depending on the specific linking group bonding nickelocene to the nanotube. We consider as linkers both aziridine and pyrrolidine rings and the amide group. Our calculations show that, at variance with aziridine, both pyrrolidine and amide, do alter the sp(2) character of the binding site of the nanotube and thus affect the transmission around the Fermi level. However, only aziridine allows transferring the spin polarization of the nickelocene to the nanotube, whose conductance at the Fermi level becomes spin-polarized. This suggests the superiority of aziridine as a linker for grafting magnetic molecules onto carbon nanotubes with efficient spin filtering functionality.

Abstract
The electronic structure and transport properties of the Cp(2)BzM(2) (M = Sc, Ti, and V) tripledeckers are studied by spin polarized density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function method considering high-spin and low-spin states. Total energy calculations show that the sandwich structured Cp(2)BzSc(2) exists in a singlet state with no local magnetic moment on the Sc atoms. Cp(2)BzTi(2) in triplet state exists as a distorted tripledecker and is more stable than singlet and quintet states. Cp(2)BzV(2) stabilizes in the quintet state with a spin density of 2.4 on each vanadium atom. Hund's coupling plays a vital role in stabilizing the higher multiplets in case of titanium and vanadium clusters. In bigger clusters like Cp(3)Bz(2)M(4), Sc multidecker has one unpaired spin, Ti multidecker has five unpaired spins, and V multidecker has seven unpaired spins in total. Spin polarized electronic transport is found for all states of vanadium tripledecker and one state of the titanium tripledecker when connected to a gold two probe junction. Moderate to high-spin filter efficiencies are calculated for these states. Cp(2)BzSc(2) shows spin-independent electronic transport for all electronic states when introduced in the gold two probe junction. Current versus voltage curves are reported for selected clusters in the two probe setup.
