Microbiological Aspects of Unique, Rare, and Unusual Fatty Acids Derived from Natural Amides and Their Pharmacological Profile

In the proposed review, the pharmacological profile of unique, rare, and unusual fatty acids derived from natural amides is considered. These amides are produced by various microorganisms, lichens, and fungi. The biological activity of some natural fatty acid amides has been determined by their isolation from natural sources, but the biological activity of fatty acids has not been practically studied. According to QSAR data, the biological activity of fatty acids is shown, which demonstrated strong antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antineoplastic, anti-inflammatory activities. Moreover, some fatty acids have shown rare activities such as antidiabetic, anti-infective, anti-eczematic, antimutagenic, and anti-psoriatic activities. For some fatty acids that have pronounced biological properties, 3D graphs are shown that show a graphical representation of unique activities. These data are undoubtedly of both theoretical and practical interest for chemists, pharmacologists, as well as for the pharmaceutical industry, which is engaged in the synthesis of biologically active drugs.

Two New Protease-Inhibiting Glycosphingolipids fromBuddleja crispa

Crispins A (1) and B (2), two new glycosphingolipids, were isolated from the whole plant Buddleja crispa, along with three known compounds: alpha-amyrin, linoleic acid, and stigmasterol. Their structures were elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic techniques. Both 1 and 2 showed significant inhibitory activity against alpha-chymotrypsin in a concentration-dependent manner.

New Sphingolipids and a Sterol from a Lobophytum Species of the Indian Ocean

Chemical investigation of a soft coral species of the genus Lobophytum has resulted in the isolation of three new sphingolipids--(2S,3S,4R)-2-nonadecanoylamino-octadecane-1,3,4-triol (1), (2S,3R,4E,8E)-[(2'R)-2'-hydroxyheptadecanoylamino]-4,8-octadecadiene-1,3-diol (2), 1-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-(2S,3R,4E,8E)-2-[(2'R)-2'-hydroxynonadecanoylamino]-9-methyl-4,8-octadecadiene-1,3-diol (3) and a sterol--(24S)-ergost-5-en-3beta,7beta-diol (4) along with the known sphingolipid--(2S,3R,4E,8E)-2-hexadecanoylamino-4,8-octadecadien-1,3-diol (5) which showed cytotoxicity against human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).

Isolation of sterols from the marine fungusCorollospora lacera

Several marine fungi collected from the waters of Prince Edward Island, Canada, were screened for the presence of natural products exhibiting antibacterial activity. Both broths and mycelia of these fungi were studied using the bioassay-guided chromatographic separation. The 4 fractions from the extract of mycelia of Corollospora lacera exhibited weak antibacterial activity and were analyzed further. From these fractions, 2 sterols (5α,8α-epidioxyergosterol and 22E,24R-ergosta-7,22-diene-3β,5α,6β-triol) and a 3:1 mixture of linoleic and oleic acids were isolated. The presence of ergosterol was confirmed in dichloromethane extracts of mycelia of every fungus in this study and this sterol was isolated from the extract of mycelium of Corollospora lacera. Two other known compounds (5-hydroxymethylfuran-2-carbaldehyde and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate), were isolated from the dichloromethane extract of mycelium of Monodictys pelagica. The phthalate was reported in the literature as a metabolite isolated from the fungi, but in our study it was proven to be an artifact of the culturing and (or) extraction procedures rather than a true fungal metabolite.Key words: marine fungus, sterols, metabolites.
