Abstract
The sterically hindered silicon compound 2-methyl-1,1,2,3,3-penta-phenyl-2-sila-propane, C33H30Si (I), was prepared via the reaction of two equivalents of di-phenyl-methyl-lithium (benzhydryllithium) and di-chloro-methyl-phenyl-silane. This bis-benzhydryl-substituted silicon compound was then reacted with tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonic acid, followed by hydrolysis with water to give the silanol 2-methyl-1,1,3,3-tetra-phenyl-2-silapropan-2-ol, C27H26OSi (II). Key geometric features for I are the Si-C bond lengths that range from 1.867 (2) to 1.914 (2) Å and a τ4 descriptor for fourfold coordination around the Si atom of 0.97 (indicating a nearly perfect tetra-hedron). Key geometric features for compound II include Si-C bond lengths that range from 1.835 (4) to 1.905 (3) Å, a Si-O bond length of 1.665 (3) Å, and a τ4 descriptor for fourfold coordination around the Si atom of 0.96. In compound II, there is an intra-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bond present. In the crystal of I, mol-ecules are linked by two pairs of C-H⋯π inter-actions, forming dimers that are linked into ribbons propagating along the b-axis direction. In the crystal of II, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯π and O-H⋯π inter-actions that result in the formation of ribbons that run along the a-axis direction.

Abstract
The development of a triflimide-catalyzed annulation of benzylic alcohols with allylsilanes for the synthesis of indane or tetralin structures is reported. In this fragment coupling reaction, complexity is built rapidly from readily available starting materials to yield diverse sets of products with up to three contiguous stereocenters. Indanes or tetralins can be generated from common precursors depending on the structure of the allylsilane reagent used. The concise synthesis of several lignan natural products highlights the utility of this newly devised methodology.

Abstract
The first catalytic asymmetric carboannulation with allylsilanes is presented. The enantioselective [3+2] annulation is catalyzed using a scandium(III)/indapybox complex with tetrakis-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-borate (BArF) to enhance catalytic activity and control stereoselectivity. Functionalized cyclopentanes containing a quaternary carbon center are derived from alkylidene oxindole, coumarin, and malonate substrates with high stereoselectivity. The enantioselective 1,4-conjugate addition and enantioselective lactone formation (by trapping of the β-silyl carbocation) is also described.

Abstract
Using the ortho-cyclometalated pi-allyl iridium precatalyst (R)-I derived from [Ir(cod)Cl](2), 4-cyano-3-nitrobenzoic acid, (R)-SEGPHOS, and allyl acetate, enantioselective transfer hydrogenation of alpha-(trimethylsilyl)allyl acetate in the presence of aldehydes 2a-i mediated by 2-propanol delivers products of (trimethylsilyl)allylation 4a-i in good isolated yields and with exceptional levels of anti-diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity (90-99% ee). In the absence of 2-propanol, but under otherwise identical reaction conditions, carbonyl (trimethylsilyl)allylation is achieved directly from the alcohol oxidation level to furnish an equivalent set of adducts 4a-i with roughly equivalent isolated yields and stereoselectivities. To evaluate the synthetic utility of the reaction products 4a-i, adduct 4g was converted to the 1,4-ene-diol 5g via dioxirane-mediated oxidative desilylation with allylic transposition, the allylic alcohol 6g via protodesilylation with allylic transposition, and the gamma-lactam 7g via chlorosulfonyl isocyanate-mediated cycloaddition.

Abstract
Four amphidinolide E stereoisomers, amphidinolide E (1), 2-epi-amphidinolide E (2), 19-epi-amphidinolide E (3), and 2-epi-19-epi-amphidinolide E (4), have been synthesized via the judicious union of aldehyde 5, allylsilanes 7 or 8, acids 9 or 10, and vinylstannane 6. The C19 stereocenters of the C19 epimeric allylsilanes 7 and 8 were introduced via crotylboration reactions early in the synthesis. [3+2]-Annulation reactions of aldehyde 5 with allylsilanes 7 and 8 were employed to set the core tetrahydrofuran units of 1-4. Finally, the C2 stereocenter was installed by esterification using acid 9, without incident, or with acid 10, in which case an unexpected and completely stereoselective inversion of C2 occurs.

Abstract
Chemoselective SN2' condensation of primary enolates of alkyl methyl ketones 2a-e with dimethyl bromomethylfumarate (1) followed by highly diastereoselective NaBH4 reduction of the ketone function in the formed ketodiesters 3a-e and the regioselective in situ lactonization of the unisolable intermediates 4a-e exclusively furnished the cis-3,5-disubstituted gamma-butyrolactones (+/-)-5a-e in very good yields. Similarly, the face-selective coupling reaction of cyclohexanone enolate with 1 to form a mixture of diastereomers in an 8:2 ratio followed by a highly selective reductive cyclization of 9 plus 10 exclusively provided the cis-octahydrobenzofuran (+/-)-12 in 70% overall yield.

Abstract
Organocopper-mediated anti-SN2' reactions of gamma-phosphoryloxy-alpha,beta-unsaturated-delta-lactams were used to prepare highly functionalized diketopiperazine mimetics. The substrate phosphates 24, 32, and 47 were prepared from alpha-amino acid-derived allylic alcohols 10 by a sequence of reactions that included ring-closing metathesis. In the reactions of phosphates with organocopper reagents, the addition of LiCl dramatically improved anti-SN2' selectivity, indicating that an organocopper cluster containing lithium chloride plays an important role in the determination of regioselectivity. This reaction system was applied to the preparation of novel low molecular weight CXCR4-chemokine receptor antagonists.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] An efficient synthesis of the tricyclic A-B subunit 2 of angelmicin B is described. A formal three-component coupling of aldehydes 4 and 6 with gamma-silylallylborane 7 was employed to assemble the tetrahydrofuranyl core of 2, a strategy highlighted by the stereoselective [3 + 2] annulation of allylsilanes 5a/5b with aldehyde 4. The efficiency of the [3 + 2] annulation was greatly improved by using the allylic benzhydryldimethylsilane 5b compared to the allylic phenyldimethylsilane 5a.

Abstract
[Structure: See text] Double asymmetric [3 + 2]-annulation reactions of chiral beta-silyloxyallylsilanes with chiral 2-tetrahydrofuranyl carboxaldehydes have been studied, leading to the stereocontrolled synthesis of six diastereomeric bis-tetrahydrofuran structures corresponding to the core subunits of members of the Annonaceous acetogenin family of natural products. Transition-state models are proposed to account for the stereoselectivity of the double-stereodifferentiating [3 + 2]-annulation reactions.

Abstract
Natural products containing a gamma-butyrolactone ring are abundant in nature; however, few general synthetic approaches to their stereoselective synthesis with broad structural variety are known. In this article, recent developments towards mono- and polycyclic gamma-butyrolactone natural products and analogs are discussed. A special focus is given to asymmetric methods applying transition metal or organocatalysts that allow not only the efficient introduction of a broad variety of functional groups but ideally also the flexible construction of various natural-product-like, polycyclic scaffolds from common precursors.

Abstract
A highly stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-asimicin (1) is reported. The synthesis features two chelate-controlled [3 + 2] annulation reactions-one of which (e.g., 2 + 3) constitutes a key, convergent fragment assembly step-that establish all of the stereochemistry of the bis-tetrahydrofuran unit of the natural product.

Abstract
In the presence of an acid catalyst, alpha-alkyl-substituted (Z)-vinylsilanes 1, bearing a tosylamino group, were smoothly cyclized to trans-2-alkyl-3-silylpiperidines 2 (1,2-silyl-migration products) and (2R*, 1'S*)-2-(1'-silylalkyl)pyrrolidines 3. The elaboration of the reaction conditions enabled the selective preparation of each cyclized product. The acid-catalyzed cyclization of (Z)-vinylsilane 5, whose methylene tether is shorter than that of 1 by one carbon, formed only the 1,2-silyl-migration product 6 with high trans-selectivity. These cyclizations were found to proceed in a stereospecific manner.

Abstract
Metal-mediated carbonyl allenylation and propargylation of 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes were investigated in aqueous environment. Different propargyl bromide and metal promoters showed varied regio- and stereoselectivities on product formation. In addition, an unprecedented one-pot stereoselective synthesis of beta-chlorinated allylic alcohols, which can also be considered as functionalized allylsilanes, has been developed, which involves tin(IV) chloride-mediated reaction of propargyltrimethylsilane and 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes. Some of the resulting coupling products were submitted to transition metal catalyzed reactions, such as the allenic Pauson-Khand and palladium-catalyzed reactions, leading to novel fused or bridged tricyclic beta-lactams. Remarkably, a novel domino process, namely the allene cyclization/intramolecular Heck reaction was found. A likely mechanism for the cascade reaction should involve an intramolecular cyclization on a (pi-allyl)palladium complex and a Heck-type reaction.
