Abstract
Design of conformationally stable compounds with planar chirality is a topic of great interest mainly because of their potential applications as enantioselective ligands or other functional materials. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of novel planar chiral cyclophanes, obtained by ortho, ortho″ anchoring of the p,p'-terphenyl unit, with bridges of different lengths and rigidities, along with their nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and X-ray characterizations. We investigated the influence of the structural particularities of the bridges over the stability of the enantiomers, by means of nuclear magnetic resonance and chiral high-performance liquid chromatography as well as by density functional theory calculations. We also demonstrated the ability of one of the cyclophanes to preferentially bind arginine with Ka > 110 M-1 (ΔG > -11 kJ mol-1) in acetonitrile solutions containig 10 % water, in the presence of other amino acids.

Abstract
Chiral, π-conjugated 3,4-butano-1-phenyl-2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)phosphole derivatives 1a(2,2') and 1a(3) with chiral trans-1,2-diol moieties and fused pinene derivatives, respectively, were prepared from the corresponding chiral diynes by using the Fagan-Nugent method. Their UV/Vis absorption and chiroptical properties (optical rotation and circular dichroism) were studied. Their behavior as N,P,N chelates towards coordination of Cu(I) and formation of chiral supramolecular assemblies with π-conjugated ditopic dicyano ligands was investigated. Chiral C(2)-symmetric rectangles that are [2,2]paracyclophane analogues were obtained, as demonstrated by X-ray crystallography. During the course of this study, the first stable water-soluble phosphole derivative (1a(2)·2 HCl) was prepared. Furthermore, achiral 3,4-butano-1-phenyl-2,5-bis(aza[4]helicene)phosphole 1a(4) was synthesized and displays extended π conjugation. A supramolecular rectangle was obtained by coordination to Cu(I) and assembly with a dicyano stilbene. This coordination-driven supramolecular assembly contains a total of four aza[4]helicene moieties and displays two types of π-π stacking interactions in the solid state, that is, between two helicene moieties and between one helicene and a bridging dicyano ligand. All the supramolecular arrangements are discussed by comparing them with previous work on the parent 3,4-butano-1-phenyl-2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)phosphole.

Abstract
A new type of rigid conjugated unsaturated strained cyclophane derivative containing dibenz[a,j]anthracene units was facilely synthesized through an intramolecular McMurry reaction without intermolecular dimerization products in good yields. The photophysical properties of these cyclophane derivatives in dilute solution were investigated, and molecular modeling was employed to study their electronic properties.

Abstract
Diels-Alder reactions between indoles (InHs) and 1,3-cyclohexadienes (CHDs) were achieved by using aromatic ketones as photosensitizers. For instance, irradiation of deaerated dichloromethane solutions containing benzoylthiophene (BT, 1 mM), indole (20 mM), and phellandrene (40 mM), in the presence of an acylating agent, led to the N-acetylated Diels-Alder cycloadduct in 46% yield (endo:exo ratio of 1.8:1). Energy transfer from the BT triplet to the CHD gave rise to diene dimers as byproducts. Several combinations of CHDs, InHs, and aromatic ketones were tested; the Diels-Alder reaction was found to be a general process, except when the indole nucleus was substituted at position 2 or 7 and when aromatization of the CHD was favored. Theoretical calculations support a stepwise mechanism involving a triplet ternary complex TC(T1), arising from a nearly barrierless reaction between CHD and the 3(BT...HIn) exciplex. All subsequent steps proceed downhill in the triplet excited state, leading to a triplet cycloadduct-sensitizer CA-BT(T1) radical pair. Attempts to detect this species, which is basically an aminyl/BT ketyl radical pair, were performed by laser excitation of a solution containing BT, phellandrene, and indole. The observed transient absorption spectra could be compatible with the added spectra of the expected components of the radical pair.

Abstract
The design, synthesis and structural analysis of architecturally new cyclophanes (monomers, dimers, and trimers) are reported. Variable temperature NMR experiments reveal a regular, tandem dynamic in the cyclophane 2a that enables its description as a "molecular rocking chair". The NMR and X-ray structure investigations show important intra- and intermolecular aromatic pi-stacking interactions.

Abstract
[structure: see text] The syntheses of two distinct families of phenylyne helical cyclophanes with potential for organic materials are described. The meta-bonded atropisomers afford interesting bowtie-like and butterfly-like conformers from a palladium(0), copper-mediated coupling sequence. Molecular modeling revealed the contrasting stereochemistry in these systems from differential molecular folding pathways during cyclization. The interplanar separation of the superimposed aromatic rings is approximately 3.5 A.

Abstract
Oxidative coupling of ethynylpropellane linked to 1,3,5-position of a benzene core 3b did not give the cage dimer 2 but the dimer 4 having a strained [12]metacyclophanedienetetrayne system. The spectral and structural features of the novel ring system were revealed for the simple dibenzo derivative 6, which was also prepared efficiently by the intramolecular cyclization of the open-chain precursor.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Indole N-substituted diyne tetracobalt complexes (4) undergo a Lewis acid mediated dimerization-cyclization reaction through the indole 3-position to afford indolophanetetrayne cobalt complexes (7). Substitution of the indole fragment of (4) with a 3-methyl function allows analogous formation of indolophanetetrayne complex (9), linked through the indole 2-position.

Abstract
New dendrons and dendrimers with dendritic arms composed of alternate phenyleneethynylene and phenylenevinylene moieties have been efficiently synthesized using orthogonal and convergent syntheses that combine Sonogashira and Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions. Two different iterative routes have been developed that allow specific control over the placement of double and triple bonds within the interior of the dendrimers. A preliminary study of the UV and photoluminescence (PL) properties of the resulting compounds is also described. All of the examples prepared are blue-luminescent.
