Organocatalysis for the Asymmetric Michael Addition of Cycloketones and α, β-Unsaturated Nitroalkenes. Catalysts 2021. Abstract
Michael addition is one of the most important carbon–carbon bond formation reactions. In this study, an (R, R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine (DPEN)-based thiourea organocatalyst was applied to the asymmetric Michael addition of nitroalkenes and cycloketones to produce a chiral product. The primary amine moiety in DPEN reacts with the ketone to form an enamine and is activated through the hydrogen bond formation between the nitro group in the α, β-unsaturated nitroalkene and thiourea. Here, the aim was to obtain an asymmetric Michael product through the 1,4-addition of the enamine to an alkene to form a new carbon–carbon bond. As a result, the primary amine of the chiral diamine was converted into an enamine. The reaction proceeded with a relatively high level of enantioselectivity achieved using double activation through the hydrogen bonding of the nitro group and thiourea. Michael products with high levels of enantioselectivity (76–99% syn ee) and diastereoselectivity (syn/anti = 9/1) were obtained with yields in the range of 88–99% depending on the ketone.

Abstract
3-Decyl-β-proline, which has a highly lipophilic substituent, was synthesized, and its catalytic activities in Michael addition using water as the solvent were investigated. The decyl substituent promoted the reaction by hydrophobic interactions to afford the Michael adduct in a high yield and with high diastereoselectivity under low catalyst loading.

Abstract
Chiral nitroalkenes are used for the first time in Michael additions of aldehydes, catalyzed by pyrrolidine derivatives. They yield the same major stereoisomer with either (S)-proline or (R)-proline, but this asymmetric induction does not overcome the effect of sterically more congested catalysts. Nitrocyclobutane intermediates are often formed, which are more stable than those from (E)-1-nitro-2-phenylethene. The cyclobutanes and final products were characterized by 2D NMR and chemical correlations.

Abstract
The addition of aldehyde enamines to nitroalkenes affords cyclobutanes in all solvents, with all of the pyrrolidine and proline derivatives tested by us and with all of the substrates we have examined. Depending on the temperature, concentration of water, solvent polarity, and other factors, the opening and hydrolysis of such a four-membered ring may take place rapidly or last for several days, producing the final Michael-like adducts (4-nitrobutanals). Thirteen new cyclobutanes have now been characterized by NMR spectroscopy. As could be expected, s-trans-enamine conformers give rise to all-trans-(4S)-4-nitrocyclobutylpyrrolidines, while s-cis-enamine conformers afford all-trans-(4R)-4-nitrocyclobutylpyrrolidines. These four-membered rings can isomerize to adduct enamines, which should be hydrolyzed via their iminium ions. MP2 and M06-2X calculations predict that one iminium ion is more stable than the other iminium species, so that protonation of the adduct enamines can be quite stereoselective; in the presence of water, the so-called syn adducts (e.g., OCH-*CHR-*CHPh-CH2NO2, with R and Ph syn) eventually become the major products. Why one syn adduct is obtained with aldehydes, whereas cyclic ketones (the predicted ring-fused cyclobutanes of which isomerize to their enamines more easily) produce the other syn adduct, is also explained by means of molecular orbital calculations. Nitro-Michael reactions of aldehyde enamines that "stop" at the nitrocyclobutane stage and final enamine stage do not work catalytically, as known, but those of cyclic ketone enamines that do not work stop at the final enamine stage (if their hydrolysis to the corresponding nitroethylketones is less favorable than expected). These and other facts are accounted for, and the proposals of the groups led by Seebach and Hayashi, Blackmond, and Pihko and Papai are reconciled.

Abstract
A new chiral mesoporous hybrid material was synthesized based on pyrrolidine units included in a siliceous framework, HybPyr, and integrated into the organic-inorganic structure, from a specific bis-silylated precursor. A fluoride sol-gel methodology under soft synthesis conditions and in the absence of sophisticated structural directing agents allowed the generation of a mesoporous architecture with a homogeneous distribution of active chiral moieties along the network. The hybrid material was studied by means of different characterization techniques (TGA, NMR and IR spectroscopy, chemical and elemental analyses, TEM, and textural measurements), verifying the stability and integrity of the asymmetric active sites in the solid. The hybrid material, HybPyr, is an excellent asymmetric heterogeneous and recyclable catalyst for enantioselective Michael addition of linear aldehydes to β-nitrostyrene derivatives with high stereocontrol of the reaction products.

Abstract
A facile synthesis of 1,5-diketones from 3-acetyl-4-hydroxycoumarin, aldehydes and cyclic-ketones via a one-pot aldol condensation and subsequent Michael addition reaction in the presence of a single catalyst of l-proline under mild reaction conditions has been developed. Novel 1,5-diketones were further cyclized to unexpected 3,4-dihydropyridines rather than generally formed pyridine analogues with ammonium acetate in acetic acid. One pot, high yields (72-92%) for novel 1,5-diketones and (70-90%) for the 3,4-dihydropyridine adducts, easy work-up and purification of products are the key advantages of this method.

Abstract
Brønsted acids of anionic chiral CoIII complexes act as bifunctional phase-transfer catalysts to shuttle the substrates across the solvent interface and control stereoselectivity. The diastereomeric chiral CoIII -templated Brønsted acids, with the same chiral ligands, enabled a switch in the enantioselective bromoaminocyclization of olefins to afford the two enantiomers of 2-substituted pyrrolidines with high enantioselectivities (up to 99:1 e.r.).

Abstract
Using the reaction between phenylacetaldehyde and nitrostyrene catalyzed by pyrrolidine as a simple model, we have studied the diastereochemical outcome of the organocatalytic Michael reactions between benzylic aldehydes and nitrostyrenes. We found that the anti adduct was obtained in high yield and diastereoselection as was demonstrated by the X-ray structure of the product. In situ NMR studies showed a different reaction pathway when compared to aliphatic aldehydes that yield the syn adduct as major isomer.

Abstract
In this account, we discuss a mass spectrometric method that enables unambiguous identification of intermediates involved in the enantioselective step of a catalytic cycle. This method, which we originally developed for rapid evaluation of chiral catalysts, is based on monitoring the back reaction of mass-labeled quasi-enantiomeric products by ESI-MS. In this way, the intrinsic enantioselectivity of a chiral catalyst can be determined directly by quantification of catalytically relevant intermediates. By comparing the results from the forward and back reaction, direct evidence for the involvement of a catalytic intermediate in the enantioselective step can be obtained. In addition, insights about the energy profile of the catalytic cycle may be gained. The potential of back reaction screening as a mechanistic tool is demonstrated for organocatalytic aldol reactions, 1,4-additions of aldehydes to nitroolefins, Diels-Alder reactions, Michael additions, and Morita-Baylis-Hillman reactions.

Abstract
![]()
Cyclic amines such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline
undergo regiodivergent
annulation reactions with 4-nitrobutyraldehydes. These redox-neutral
transformations enable the asymmetric synthesis of highly substituted
polycyclic ring systems in just two steps from commercial materials.
The utility of this process is illustrated in a rapid synthesis of
(−)-protoemetinol. Computational studies provide mechanistic
insights and implicate the elimination of acetic acid from an ammonium
nitronate intermediate as the rate-determining step.

Abstract
The non-covalent interactions of S-(-)-proline with the surfaces of carbon nanostructures (fullerene, nanotubes and graphite) change the nucleophilic-electrophilic and acid-base properties of the amino acid, thus tuning its activity and selectivity in the organocatalytic Hajos-Parrish-Eder-Sauer-Wiechert (HPESW) reaction. Whilst our spectroscopy and microscopy measurements show no permanent covalent bonding between S-(-)-proline and carbon nanostructures, a systematic investigation of the catalytic activity and selectivity of the organocatalyst in the HPESW reaction demonstrates a clear correlation between the pyramidalisation angle of carbon nanostructures and the catalytic properties of S-(-)-proline. Carbon nanostructures with larger pyramidalisation angles have a stronger interaction with the nitrogen atom lone pair of electrons of the organocatalyst, thereby simultaneously decreasing the nucleophilicity and increasing the acidity of the organocatalyst. These translate into lower conversion rates but higher selectivities towards the dehydrated product of Aldol addition.

Abstract
This paper purports to review catalysis, particularly the organocatalysis and its origin, key trends, challenges, examples, scope, and importance. The definition of organocatalyst corresponds to a low molecular weight organic molecule which in stoichiometric amounts catalyzes a chemical reaction. In this review, the use of the term heterogenized organocatalyst will be exclusively confined to a catalytic system containing an organic molecule immobilized onto some sort of support material and is responsible for accelerating a chemical reaction. Firstly, a brief description of the field is provided putting it in a green and sustainable perspective of chemistry. Next, research findings on the use of organocatalysts on various inorganic supports including nano(porous)materials, nanoparticles, silica, and zeolite/zeolitic materials are scrutinized in brief. Then future scope, research directions, and academic and industrial applications will be outlined. A succinct account will summarize some of the research and developments in the field. This review tries to bring many outstanding researches together and shows the vitality of the organocatalysis through several aspects.
