Systematic Modifications of a Simple Tolan: Another Category of Viscosity Sensor

The first tolan derivative-based viscosity sensor (5d) has been synthesized, and its fluorescence intensity and lifetime increase when the viscosity of the solvent increases in methanol-glycerol mixtures. Phthalide (5d) was selected among structurally diverse tolan derivatives through systematic modifications of a simple tolan. To test 5d as a viscosity sensor, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) images of HeLa cells were obtained upon treatment with 5 μM of 5d to map the viscosity of the HeLa cells.

Coordination-Directed Assembly of Luminescent Semiconducting Oligomers and Weak Interaction-Induced Morphology Transformation

Luminescent semiconducting oligomers (LSOs) have been one of the most popular molecular materials that can be applied in various fields because of their distinctive optical properties. The study of molecular packing and morphological change of oligomers is essential for the rational design of materials and regulation functions. Herein, we report two novel LSOs (OFBB and OFBT) with a slight difference in chemical structures but show a distinct difference in self-assembly behaviors in the coordination-driven process. OFBB forms spherical particles with Zn(II). Compared with OFBB, OFBT has an additional thiazole moiety, which forms spherical particles with Zn(II) and then transforms to a crystalline nanobelt in 2 h. The process and mechanism of the nanosphere and nanobelt formation were investigated in detail. The double S···N interaction between two benzothiazoles in adjacent oligomers played a significant contribution in this dynamic morphology transformation. In addition, the as-prepared two products showed excellent sensing toward nitrobenzene with good selectivity over other nitro-aromatic explosives.

H-Bonded Duplexes based on a Phenylacetylene Backbone

Complementary phenylacetylene oligomers equipped with phenol and phosphine oxide recognition sites form stable multiply H-bonded duplexes in toluene solution. Oligomers were prepared by Sonogashira coupling of diiodobenzene and bis-acetylene building blocks in the presence of monoacetylene chain terminators. The product mixtures were separated by reverse phase preparative high-pressure liquid chromatography to give a series of pure oligomers up to seven recognition units in length. Duplex formation between length complementary homo-oligomers was demonstrated by 31P NMR denaturation experiments using dimethyl sulfoxide as a competing H-bond acceptor. The denaturation experiments were used to determine the association constants for duplex formation, which increase by nearly 2 orders of magnitude for every phenol-phosphine oxide base-pair added. These experiments show that the phenylacetylene backbone supports formation of extended duplexes with multiple cooperative intermolecular H-bonding interactions, and together with previous studies on the mixed sequence phenylacetylene 2-mer, suggest that this supramolecular architecture is a promising candidate for the development of synthetic information molecules that parallel the properties of nucleic acids.

Fluorescent and cooperative ion pair receptor based on tolan for Na+ (or Li+) and HSO4-: logic AND gate

A tolan derivative was synthesized as a fluorescent and cooperative ion pair receptor. As both Na⁺ and HSO₄^- ions were complexed to the receptor, only substantial fluorescence was quenched. Thus, it also acts as a logic AND gate.

Molecular Coplanarity and Self-Assembly Promoted by Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonds

Active conformational control is realized in a conjugated system using intramolecular hydrogen bonds to achieve tailored molecular, supramolecular, and solid-state properties. The hydrogen bonding functionalities are fused to the backbone and precisely preorganized to enforce a fully coplanar conformation of the π-system, leading to short π-π stacking distances, controllable molecular self-assembly, and solid-state growth of one-dimensional nano-/microfibers. This investigation demonstrates the efficiency and significance of an intramolecular noncovalent approach in promoting conformational control and self-assembly of organic molecules.

Polymeric Tubular Structures

Nature makes use of tubular structures for the spatial separation of matter on many different length scales, ranging from the nanometer scale (selective channels based on folded proteins) up to the centimeter scale (blood vessels). Today, polymer chemists and engineers can prepare polymeric tubular structures via a variety of different methods also covering many lengthscales, from nanometers to meters. The synthetic approaches described in this chapter vary significantly from the folding of single polymer chains via the self-assembly of DNA fragments to coordinative metal-organic nanotubes to tubes engineerd from bulk polymers using a range of porous or fibrous templates. While all examples reported in this chapter form tubular structures and thereby mimic their naturally occuring counterparts, it is mainly the engineered tubes that are more straightforward to prepare that also show some bio-inspired function.

Accelerated hydration reaction of an unsymmetrical tolan evidenced by a Hg(ii)-trapped macrocycle and its application as a Hg(ii)-selective indicator

Hg(ii)-mediated hydration reactions of unsymmetrical quinoline type tolans were studied. The observed accelerated reactions of the tolans rely on the additional binding motifs of the tolan, as supported by the X-ray structure of the macrocycle (2b). The analyte-specific reaction allows us to detect Hg(ii) in buffered media.

Conformationally Locked Tolans, β-Sheet Structures, and Photophysical Properties

Conformationally locked tetrasubstituted tolans were synthesized by introducing a tether on the tolan. To demonstrate the utilities of these motifs, a β-hairpin structure (15) was synthesized, and its additional stabilizing effects were evaluated. Moreover, the photophysical properties of cyclic tolans and their β-sheet structure were investigated. The fluorescence quantum yield of cyclic tolan 12 is >1000 times stronger than its congener 1 in CH3CN.

Ion-mediated conformational switches

Molecular switches are ubiquitous in Nature and provide the basis of many forms of transport and signalling. Single synthetic molecules that change conformation, and thus function, reversibly in a stimulus-dependent manner are of great interest not only to chemists but society in general; myriad applications exist in storage, display, sensing and medicine. Here we describe recent developments in the area of ion-mediated switching.

Syntheses and Properties of Enantiomerically Pure Higher (n ≥ 7) [n−2]Triangulanedimethanols and σ-[n]Helicenes

(P)-(+)-Hexaspiro[2.0.0.0. 0.0.2.1.1.1.1.1]pentadecane [(P)-17] as well as (M)-(-)- and (P)-(+)-octaspiro[2.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.2.1.1.1.1.1.1.1]nonadecanes [(M)- and (P)-25]-enantiomerically pure unbranched [7]- and [9]triangulanes-have been prepared starting from racemic THP-protected (methylenecyclopropyl)methanol 6. The relative configurations of all important intermediates as well as the absolute configurations of the key intermediates were established by X-ray crystal structure analyses. This new convergent approach to enantiomerically pure linear [n]triangulanes for n=7, 9 was also tested in two variants towards [15]triangulane. Some of the most prominent and unexpected features of the newly prepared compounds are the remarkable modes of self-assembly of the diols (P)-14, (E)-(3S,3'S,4S,4'S,5R,5'R)-21, (P)-(+)-22, and (E)-31 in the solid state through frameworks of intermolecular hydrogen bonds leading to, depending on the respective structure, nanotube- [(P)-14, (P)-(+)-22, and (E)-31], honeycomb-like structures [(E)-(3S,3'S,4S,4'S,5R,5'R)-21] or a supramolecular double helix [(P)-(+)- and (M)-(-)-22]. Liquid crystalline properties of the esters and ethers of the diols (P)-14, (P)-, and (M)-22 have also been tested. Although all of these [n]triangulanes have no chromophore which would lead to significant absorptions above 200 nm, they exhibit surprisingly high specific rotations even at 589 nm with [alpha](20)(D)=+672.9 (c=0.814 in CHCl(3)) for (P)-(+)-17, +909.9 (c=0.96 in CHCl(3)) for (P)-(+)-25, -890.5 (c=1.01 in CHCl(3)) for (M)-(-)-25, and -1302.5 (c=0.36 in CHCl(3)) for (M)-(-)-39, and the specific rotations increase drastically on going to shorter wavelengths. This outstanding rotatory power is in line with their rather rigid helical arrangement of sigma bonds, and accordingly these helically shaped unbranched [n]triangulanes may be termed "sigma-[n]helicenes", as they represent the sigma-bond analogues of the aromatic pi-[n]helicenes. Density functional theory (DFT) computations at the B3 LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory for the geometry optimization and time-dependent DFT for determining optical rotations with a triplet-zeta basis set (B3 LYP/TZVP) reproduce the optical rotatory dispersions (ORD) very well for the lower members (n=4, 5) of the sigma-[n]helicenes. For the higher ones (n=7, 9, 15) the computed specific rotations turn out increasingly larger than the experimental values. The remarkable increase of the specific rotation with an increasing number of three-membered rings is proportional neither to the molecular weight nor to the number of cyclopropane rings in these sigma-[n]helicenes.
