Novel Cyclooctatetraene Radical Cation Planarized by Full Annelation with Bicyclo[2.1.1]hexene Units

Oxidation of a Dithieno[3,4-b:3',4'-d]thiophene Cyclic Dimer Containing a Planar Cyclooctatetraene Ring: Retention of High Antiaromaticity During Reactions

One-electron and peracid oxidations of dithieno[3,4-b : 3',4'-d]thiophene cyclic dimer, which contains an antiaromatic planar cyclooctatetraene (COT) core, were conducted. The reaction of the cyclic dimer with SbCl₅ produced isolable radical cation salts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the spin density of the radical cation resides not on the COT ring but on the peripheral sulfur and carbon atoms in the thiophene unit with retention of high antiaromaticity based on the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS). The peracid oxidation of the cyclic dimer was found to proceed not on the COT ring but on the bridging sulfur atom in the dithienothiophene moiety. The retention of the high antiaromaticity of the COT ring after the sulfoxide formation was experimentally confirmed based on the relative hardness, and also was theoretically supported by NICS calculations. Interestingly, the DFT calculations suggested that the high antiaromaticity does not enhance the reactivity towards the epoxidation on the COT ring.

Calculations of the Optical Spectra of Hydrocarbon Radical Cations Based on Koopmans' Theorem

The first few bands in the optical spectra of radical cations can often be interpreted in terms of A-type transitions that involve electron promotions from doubly occupied to the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) and/or B-type transition which involve electron promotion from the SOMO to virtual molecular orbitals. We had previously demonstrated that, by making use of Koopmans' theorem, the energies of A-type transitions can be related to orbital energy differences between lower occupied MOs and the highest occupied MO (HOMO) in the neutral molecule, calculated at the geometry of the radical cation. We now propose that the energies of B-type transitions can be related similarly to energy differences between the lowest unoccupied MO (LUMO) and higher virtual MOs in the dication, also calculated at the geometry of the radical cation, by way of an extension of Koopmans' theorem to virtual MOs similar to that used sometimes to model resonances in electron scattering experiments. The optical spectra of the radical cations of several polyenes and aromatic compounds, the matrix spectra of which are known (or presented here for the first time), and for which CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations are available, are discussed in terms of these Koopmans-based models. Then the spectra of five poly(bicycloalkyl)-protected systems and that of hexabenzocoronene, compounds not amenable to higher level calculations, are examined and it is found that the Koopmans-type calculations allow a satisfactory interpretation of most of the features in these spectra. These simple calculations therefore provide a computationally inexpensive yet effective way to assign optical transitions in radical ions. Limitations of the model are discussed.

A computational study of sulfur bridged cyclooctatetraenophanes

Calculations of several thiacyclooctatetraenophanes predicted, as part of their overall geometry, substantial flattening of the cyclooctatetraene (COT) structures relative to the tub conformation generally associated with the COT molecule. The COT structures were approximately parallel to each other and the interplanar distances were predicted to be within 2.787-2.803 angstrom at the DFT/UB3YLP level of calculation. DFT/UB3LYP optimized geometries afforded significant delocalization of the COT structures in each of the thiacyclooctatetraenophanes. Hartree-Fock (HF) methods and the semi-empirical Austin Model 1 (AM1) method deviated significantly from the DFT/UB3LYP optimized geometries. Cyclooctatetraenes can undergo reversible sizing by oxidation and reduction reactions to form the aromatic dication and aromatic dianion, respectively, which could then be used to prepare molecular backbones for polymeric organometallic molecular wires. The number of bridges and the introduction of the sulfur atom have been investigated to provide disparate synthetic routes.
