Abstract
A phosphine-mediated deoxygenative condensation of 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds such as aroylformates, α-diketones, and isatins with arylazocarboxylates has been developed for a facile synthesis of N-aryl-N-acyl hydrazones in moderate to excellent yields under very mild conditions. Mechanistic investigation based on 31P NMR tracking experiments unveils that the reaction is initiated with the in situ formation of the modified Huisgen zwitterions from arylazocarboxylates and PPh3 and proceeds via a nitrogen to nitrogen ester group migration process. This study also represents the first exploration of the reactivity patterns of the modified Huisgen zwitterions derived from arylazocarboxylates toward electrophiles such as 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds.

Abstract
The hallmark of nucleophilic phosphine catalysis is the initial nucleophilic addition of a phosphine to an electrophilic starting material, producing a reactive zwitterionic intermediate, generally under mild conditions. In this Review, we classify nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions in terms of their electrophilic components. In the majority of cases, these electrophiles possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds: alkenes (section 2), allenes (section 3), alkynes (section 4), and Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) alcohol derivatives (MBHADs; section 5). Within each of these sections, the reactions are compiled based on the nature of the second starting material-nucleophiles, dinucleophiles, electrophiles, and electrophile-nucleophiles. Nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions that occur via the initial addition to starting materials that do not possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds are collated in section 6. Although not catalytic in the phosphine, the formation of ylides through the nucleophilic addition of phosphines to carbon-carbon multiple bond-containing compounds is intimately related to the catalysis and is discussed in section 7. Finally, section 8 compiles miscellaneous topics, including annulations of the Hüisgen zwitterion, phosphine-mediated reductions, iminophosphorane organocatalysis, and catalytic variants of classical phosphine oxide-generating reactions.

Abstract
Trialkyl phosphites were evaluated as phosphorus nucleophiles for addition to mesoionic 4-trifluoroacetyl-1,3-oxazolium-5-olates (1), thereby producing tetravalent phosphorus zwitterions (2) in good yields. The structure of 2 was determined to be a tetravalent phosphonium enolate via single crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract

Nucleophilic heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed annulation of enals and cyclic 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, opening a route to gamma-spirolactones, has been observed for the first time. The strategy works well with isatins, leading to spiroannulated oxindole derivatives. It is conceivable that the spiroannulation protocol reported herein will be applicable to the synthesis of important natural products that are endowed with a spiro gamma-butyrolactone motif, especially oxindoles and norsesquiterpenoids.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Reaction of the Huisgen zwitterion, derived from triphenylphosphine and dialkyl azodicarboxylate, with allenic esters affords highly functionalized pyrazolines and pyrazoles. The crystal structure of pyrazoline derivative 7a showed extensive C-H...O interactions. Pyrazole formation proceeds via a novel nitrogen to carbon migration of the carboalkoxy group.
