Abstract
Chiral β-amino alcohols are crucial structural motifs found in pharmaceuticals, natural products, and chiral ligands in asymmetric catalysis. Despite previous advances, the development of catalytic approaches to access β-amino alcohols bearing vicinal stereocenters from readily available chemicals remains a prominent challenge. Herein, we describe the Cr-catalyzed asymmetric cross aza-pinacol coupling of aldehydes and N-sulfonyl imines. This protocol proceeds in a radical-polar crossover manner from the intermediacy of an α-amino radical instead of a ketyl radical. Key to the success is using a chiral chromium catalyst, which plays a triple role in the chemoselective single-electron reduction of the imine, fast radical interception to inhibit radical addition to imines, and chemo- and stereoselective addition to aldehydes instead of imines. This method provides a modular and efficient approach to accessing diverse β-amino alcohols bearing vicinal stereocenters.

Abstract
The use of two or more metal catalysts in a reaction is a powerful synthetic strategy to access complex targets efficiently and selectively from simple starting materials. While capable of uniting distinct reactivities, the principles governing multimetallic catalysis are not always intuitive, making the discovery and optimization of new reactions challenging. Here, we outline our perspective on the design elements of multimetallic catalysis using precedent from well-documented C-C bond-forming reactions. These strategies provide insight into the synergy of metal catalysts and compatibility of the individual components of a reaction. Advantages and limitations are discussed to promote further development of the field.

Abstract
Metallaphoto-catalysis has been established as a robust platform for efficient construction of a range of chemical bonds. Moreover, transformation of native functionalities such as C(sp3)-H bonds to produce functional molecules represents one of the most attractive strategies in organic synthesis. Merging two powerful methodologies, metallaphoto-catalyzed benzylic and allylic C(sp3)-H bond functionalizations provide a series of general and mild approaches for diversification of alkylbenzenes and alkenes.

Abstract
The addition of alkyl fragments to aliphatic aldehydes is a highly desirable transformation for fragment couplings, yet existing methods come with operational challenges related to the basicity and instability of the nucleophilic reagents commonly employed. We report herein that nickel catalysis using a readily available bioxazoline (BiOx) ligand can catalyze the reductive coupling of redox-active esters with aliphatic aldehydes using zinc metal as the reducing agent to deliver silyl-protected secondary alcohols. This protocol is operationally simple, proceeds under mild conditions, and tolerates a variety of functional groups. Initial mechanistic studies suggest a radical chain pathway. Additionally, alkyl tosylates and epoxides are suitable alkyl precursors to this transformation providing a versatile suite of catalytic reactions for the functionalization of aliphatic aldehydes.

Abstract
A mild, convenient coupling of aliphatic aldehydes and unactivated alkyl bromides has been developed. The catalytic system features the use of a common Ni(ii) precatalyst and a readily available bioxazoline ligand and affords silyl-protected secondary alcohols. The reaction is operationally simple, utilizing Mn as a stoichiometric reductant, and tolerates a wide range of functional groups. The use of 1,5-hexadiene as an additive is an important reaction parameter that provides significant benefits in yield optimizations. Initial mechanistic experiments support a mechanism featuring an alpha-silyloxy Ni species that undergoes formal oxidative addition to the alkyl bromide via a reductive cross-coupling pathway. Aliphatic aldehydes and alkyl bromides are reductively coupled using nickel catalysis. A BiOX ligand and 1,5-hexadiene paired with a silyl chloride and Mn as the terminal reductant are important features of the process.![]()

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transition metal-catalyzed reactions of alkynyl halides are a versatile means of synthesizing a wide array of products. Their use is of particular interest in cycloaddition reactions and in constructing new carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Transition metal-catalyzed reactions of alkynyl halides have successfully been used in [4+2], [2+2], [2+2+2] and [3+2] cycloaddition reactions. Many carbon-carbon coupling reactions take advantage of metal-catalyzed reactions of alkynyl halides, including Cadiot-Chodkiewicz, Suzuki-Miyaura, Stille, Kumada-Corriu and Inverse Sonogashira reactions. All the methods of constructing carbon-nitrogen, carbon-oxygen, carbon-phosphorus, carbon-sulfur, carbon-silicon, carbon-selenium and carbon-tellurium bonds employed alkynyl halides. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this review is to highlight and summarize research conducted in transition metalcatalyzed reactions of alkynyl halides in recent years. The focus will be placed on cycloaddition and coupling reactions, and their scope and applicability to the synthesis of biologically important and industrially relevant compounds will be discussed. CONCLUSION It can be seen from the review that the work done on this topic has employed the use of many different transition metal catalysts to perform various cycloadditions, cyclizations, and couplings using alkynyl halides. The reactions involving alkynyl halides were efficient in generating both carbon-carbon and carbonheteroatom bonds. Proposed mechanisms were included to support the understanding of such reactions. Many of these reactions face retention of the halide moiety, allowing additional functionalization of the products, with some new products being inaccessible using their standard alkyne counterparts.

Abstract
The first intermolecular carbonyl arylations via transfer hydrogenative reductive coupling are described. Using rhodium catalysts modified by tBu2PMe, sodium formate-mediated reductive coupling of aryl iodides with aldehydes occurs in a chemoselective fashion in the presence of protic functional groups and lower halides. This work expands the emerging paradigm of transfer hydrogenative coupling as an alternative to pre-formed carbanions or metallic reductants in C═X addition.

Abstract
Here we report the application of dual nickel/photoredox catalysis to the allylation of aliphatic, aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes by using commercially available reagents. The process utilizes the combination of a Ni(ii) complex, [Ru(bpy)3]2+ as a photoredox catalyst, and allylacetate under blue LED irradiation, and allows the synthesis of a large variety of homoallylic alcohols.

Abstract
Herein, we report the redox-neutral allylation of aldehydes with readily available electron-rich allyl (hetero-) arenes, β-alkyl styrenes and allyl-diarylamines. This process was enabled by the combination of photoredox and chromium catalysis, which allowed a range of homoallylic alcohols to be prepared with high levels of selectivity for the anti diastereomer. Mechanistic investigations support the formation of an allyl chromium intermediate from allylic C(sp3)-H bonds and thus significantly extends the scope of the venerable Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi reaction.

Abstract
Known stable [Cr(bpy)2(Ph)2](BPh4) complexes undergo reductive elimination of biphenyl with visible-light photolysis using household incandescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs. A series of [Cr(R-bpy)2(Ar)2](X) complexes (R = H or CMe3; Ar = Ph, C6H4-CMe3, or C6H4-OMe; X = I, BPh4, or PF6) were prepared, and the effect of varying the bipyridine and aryl ligands on the UV-visible spectra and electrochemistry of the chromium(III) complexes was investigated. Photolysis of a mixture of two different bis(aryl) complexes gave only the homocoupled biaryl products by 1H NMR and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. The initial product of photoinduced reductive elimination of [Cr(bpy)2(Ar)2](PF6) was trapped with bipyridine to generate [Cr(bpy)3](PF6) and with benzoyl peroxide to form [Cr(bpy)2(O2CPh)2](PF6). The latter chromium(III) bis(benzoate) complex was also synthesized by the addition of bipyridine and PhCO2H to Cp2Cr, followed by air oxidation. The neutral Cr(bpy)(S2CNMe2)Ph2 complex also generated biphenyl upon visible-light photolysis. While the treatment of Cr(tBu-bpy)(dpm)Cl2 [dpm = (OCtBu)2CH] with AgO2CPh gave trans-Cr(tBu-bpy)(dpm)(O2CPh)2, reaction of the dichloro precursor with PhMgCl produced anionic [Cr(tBu-bpy)Ph3]- with [Mg(dpm)(THF)4]+ as the countercation, with both complexes characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Protonolysis of Cr(bpy)Ph3(THF) with 8-hydroxyquinoline produced Cr(bpy)(quin)Ph2, which generated biphenyl under visible-light photolysis, and the initial product of reductive elimination was trapped by bipyridine or benzoyl peroxide. A related Cr(bpy)(quin)2 complex was synthesized by protonolysis of Cr(bpy)[N(SiMe3)2]2 and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The chromium-catalyzed enantioselective addition of carbo halides to carbonyl compounds is an important transformation in organic synthesis. However, the corresponding catalytic enantioselective arylation of ketones has not been reported to date. Herein, we report the first Cr-catalyzed enantioselective addition of aryl halides to both arylaliphatic and aliphatic ketones with high enantioselectivity in an intramolecular version, providing facile access to enantiopure tetrahydronaphthalen-1-ols and 2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ols containing a tertiary alcohol.

Abstract
We report an efficient and practical protocol for the Cr/Ni-catalyzed vinylation of aldehydes, based on the use of Mn/Cr alloy (ca. 10 % Cr) and TMSCl. No additional Cr salts need to be added. In the presence of NiCl2 (0.3 mol %) and a bis(ketimino)-2,2'-bipyridine as N4 -chelating ligand (1 mol %), the vinylations proceed smoothly at room temperature. The presence of catalytic amounts of MeOH and LiOAc as additives was found to further promote the efficiency of the catalytic system, even in the absence of the ligand. Detailed reaction monitoring revealed that LiOAc accelerates the product alcohol silylation, thus increasing the turnover rate.

Abstract
A convergent synthesis of the C(18)-C(34) fragment of amphidinolide C and the C(18)-C(29) fragment of amphidinolide F is reported. The approach involves the synthesis of the common intermediate tetrahydrofuranyl-β-ketophosphonate via cross metathesis, Pd(0)-catalyzed cyclization, and hydroboration-oxidation. The β-ketophosphonate was coupled to three side chain aldehydes using a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) olefination reaction to give dienones, which were reduced with l-selectride to give the fragments of amphidinolide C and F.

Abstract
A catalytic enantioselective propargylation in the presence of 10 mol % of Cr catalyst prepared from Cr(III) bromide and (R)-sulfonamide E furnishes homopropargyl alcohol 8 in 78% yield with 90% ee. Coupled with the workup based on Amano-lipase, this method provides a practical synthesis of optically pure 8 on a multigram scale. With maintenance of its optical purity, 8 has been converted to 1b, the C14-C19 building block of halichondrins and E7389, in two steps.
