Abstract
A practical synthetic route to construct a variety of 3-benzyl spiro[4,5]trienones was developed via transition-metal Cu/Ag-catalyzed oxidative ipso-annulation of activated alkynes with unactivated toluenes using TBPB as an oxidant under microwave irradiation. This method allows the formation of two carbon-carbon bonds and one carbon-oxygen bond in a single reaction through a sequence of C-H oxidative coupling, ipso-carbocyclization and dearomatization. The advantages of this protocol are its operational simplicity and broad substrate scope, and the ability to afford the desired products in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
A practical and efficient synthetic route to construct a variety of 3-arylselenenyl/3-arylthio spiro[4.5]trienones was developed using Selectfluor reagent as a mild oxidant. This reaction proceeds via a sequence of electrophilic cation addition, spirocyclization and dearomatization, then offers an approach to introduce Se/S-centered cation into the C–C triple bonds. The utility of this protocol were justified by the excellent compatibility of a wide range of functional groups, good yields and scalability under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
A series of new 2,5-disubstituted selenophene derivatives are described from elemental selenium and 1,3-diynes in superbasic media. The activation of elemental selenium in a KOH/DMSO system allows cyclization with conjugated diynes at room temperature. The cyclization reaction is extended to a broad range of functional groups, for which photophysics were experimentally and theoretically investigated. The selenophene derivatives present absorption maxima in the UV-A region and fluorescence emission in the violet-to-blue region. Fluorescence decay profiles were obtained showing a monoexponential decay with fast fluorescence lifetimes (∼0.118 ns), as predicted by the Strickler-Berg relations. In general, in both investigations, no dependence on the solvent polarity on the absorption and emission maxima location was observed. On the other hand, solvents and substituents are shown to play a role in the fluorescence quantum yield values. In addition, a fluorescence self-quenching behavior could be observed, related to a photoinduced electron-transfer mechanism. Theoretical calculations performed at the MP2/ADC(2)/cc-pVDZ level of theory were performed in order to investigate the photophysical features of this series of selenophene derivatives.

Abstract
Synthesis of complex di(selenophen-3-yl)diselenides and 3-methylene-3H-1,2-diselenoles directly from 1-bromobutadiynes is described. The transformation is performed under conditions used before for the synthesis of simple selenophenes from butadiynes. The reaction is operationally straightforward, and complex products were obtained in high yields. Structures of the final products were unambiguously confirmed by the means of 77Se NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Iodocyclization of silyl group-substituted homopropargylic carbamates and amides proceeded via 6-exo-dig mode to afford 6-vinylene-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazines in moderate to quantitative yields. This is the first report for silyl group-solely directed iodocyclization of alkynes utilizing the β-silyl effect. Under these mild reaction conditions, various functionalities such as secondary alcohol, acetal, urea, and sulfide were tolerated.

Abstract
A facile approach for the synthesis of substituted iodo-benzo[a]phenazines from 2-aryl-3-(aryl/alkylethynyl)quinoxalines via 6-endo-dig ring closure has been described under mild reaction conditions. Iodocyclization proceeds through the iodonium ion intermediate followed by nucleophilic cyclization with the C-H bond of the arene. Furthermore, the resulting 6-iodo-5-aryl/alkyl benzo[a]phenazine derivatives allowed for structural diversification by employing various coupling reactions. The structure of iodo-benzo[a]phenazine was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic studies of the compound.

Abstract
The retro-Favorskii reaction is an excellent way to achieve terminal alkynes. Methodologies that connect the synthesis of terminal alkynes and organochalcogen motifs are important for the construction of novel compounds. Fourteen new terminal alkynes containing either Csp -S or Csp -Se bonds were selectively prepared through the retro-Favorskii reaction from the respective carbinol precursors. It was discovered that terminal chalcogen alkynes were stable for weeks if stored as a solution in hexanes.

Abstract
In an effort to broaden the absorption of conjugated polymers, atomistic bandgap control was applied to the semi-random polymer architecture. Here, we report the physical properties of semi-random polyselenophenes as compared to analogous polythiophenes. In order to examine the effect of the selenium heteroatom on the optical properties of the polymers, UV-vis spectra were studied and it was found that all polyselenophenes exhibit lower bandgaps and higher absorption coefficients in thin films. Further, differential scanning calorimetry and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction results indicate that semi-random polyselenophenes are semicrystalline polymers and their (100) interchain distances are shorter than in the case of semi-random polythiophenes, which may be responsible for higher absorption coefficients. To probe the effect of the selenium heteroatom on the nano-organization of these polymers and their blends with PC61BM, thin films were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TEM images show a segregation between more densely packed areas from less densely packed areas in the pristine polymer films, which is more pronounced for polyselenophenes than for polythiophenes. The blends of polyselenophenes with PC61BM do not show the well-defined segregation observed for the polythiophene analogues. However, the broadened and extended absorption of semi-random polyselenophenes translates into an extended photocurrent response in the photovoltaic devices, as evidenced by external quantum efficiency measurements.

Abstract
Copper(II) halide mediated cyclization of homopropargyl chalcogenides gave three types of chalcogenophene derivatives. Selective product formation was achieved by controlling solvent, temperature, and atmosphere. By using CuBr2 and 1,2-dichloroethane at room temperature under ambient atmosphere, 4-bromo dihydroselenophene derivatives were obtained, whereas CuBr2 and 1,2-dichloroethane at reflux gave selectively 2-substituted selenophenes. When 1,2-dichloroethane was replaced by dimethylacetamide, 3-halo-selenophenes were obtained exclusively. The versatility of chalcogenophenes was also studied by reaction of 3-haloselenophenes with terminal alkynes under Sonogashira conditions affording the cross-coupled products. In addition, the reaction of 3-haloselenophenes with boronic acids gave the corresponding Suzuki-type products in good yields.

Abstract
The reaction of o-alkynylarenesulfoxide with iodine was investigated in detail, revealing functionalities of the formation of α-diketones with sulfenyl, sulfinyl, and sulfonyl. Additives can change the ratio of products to give medium-to-excellent yields. Results show that water is taken into only sulfonyl compound and that other oxygen atoms constructed in the products are presumably derived from sulfoxide of the starting material and molecular oxygen.

Abstract
A new, general method for the synthesis of spiro[4,5]trienones is described by the intramolecular ipso-halocyclization of 4-(p-unsubstituted-aryl)-1-alkynes. In the presence of halide electrophiles, a variety of 4-(p-unsubstituted-aryl)-1-alkynes underwent the intramolecular ipso-halocyclization with water smoothly, affording the corresponding halo-substituted spiro[4,5]trienones in moderate to good yields. The obtained spiro[4,5]trienones can be applied in constructing the azaquaternary tricyclic skeleton via Pd-catalyzed Heck reaction. Notably, the prepared spiro[4,5]trienones and azaquaternary tricycles are of importance in the areas of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The mechanism of the intramolecular ipso-halocyclization reaction is also discussed according to the (18)O-labeling experiments and DFT calculations.

Abstract
We have developed a new method of iodocyclization based on reagent-controlled oxidative aromatization. Our strategy takes advantage of the dual nature of iodine as both an iodinating and an oxidizing agent. This approach enabled "product switch" and enhanced the flexibility of the synthetic pathway toward pyrazoles and isoxazoles. In addition, the iodo moiety of the cyclized product could create further diversity. The utility of our methodology was demonstrated in the synthesis of valdecoxib and its 2,5-dihydro analogs.
