Abstract
Herein, we report a controlled introduction of an amide unit at the ortho-position of an electron-deficient arylamide system without affording any cyclized products using user-friendly dioxazolone as an amidating reagent in the presence of a Rh(III)-catalyst. This is the first report where native primary amide has been utilized as a weakly coordinating group for site-selective C-N bond formation reaction. The developed protocol works under external auxiliary-free conditions with a wide substrate scope.

Abstract
Described herein is the first total synthesis of a marine isocyanide terpene, (±)-halichonadin C. Our synthetic strategy features nitrile-to-isocyanide interconversion utilizing hypervalent iodine-promoted Hofmann rearrangement. This approach led to successful construction of an isocyanide group at the stereochemically encumbered C-6 position in (±)-halichonadin C. Furthermore, in accord with a scenario we propose for the biosynthesis of halichonadins A-D, (±)-halichonadin C was transformed to halichonadins A and B via the missing link intermediate, halichonadin isocyanate.

Abstract
Aromatic C-H oxygenation is important in both industrial production and organic synthesis. Here we report a metal-free approach for phenol oxygenation with water as the oxygen source using oxoammonium salts as the renewable oxidant. Employing this protocol, various alkyl-substituted phenols were converted into benzoquinones in yields of 59-98%. On the basis of 18O-labeling and kinetic studies, the hydroxy-oxoammonium adduct was proposed to attack the aromatic ring similarly to electrophilic aromatic substitution. We suppose that the findings described here not only provide an efficient and highly selective protocol for aromatic C-H oxygenation but also may encourage further developments of possible transition-metal-free catalytic methods.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of aryl-substituted quinones via Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H functionalization of less expensive and abundant benzoquinones with aryl acetamides is demonstrated. An auxiliary ligand N,N-bidentate-directing group 8-aminoquinoline plays a crucial role in the success of the reaction. A broad range of substituted phenyl acetamides including commercially available drug molecules were examined and also found to be highly compatible with quinones. The aryl-substituted quinones were also easily converted into aryl-substituted hydroquinone derivatives. A plausible reaction mechanism was proposed to account for the selective distal C-H bond functionalization.

Abstract
Background: Chemical methods for glycan release have gained traction because of their cost efficiency, accelerated reaction time and ability to release glycans not amenable to enzymatic cleavage. Oxidative chemical glycan release via hypochlorite treatment has been shown to be a convenient and efficient method that yields N-glycans similar to classical PNGase F digestion. We observed that the initial steps of the suggested mechanism for the oxidative release of glycans from glycoproteins by hypohalites showed similarities to the initiating steps of the classical Hofmann rearrangement of carboxamides. Therefore, we investigated the ability of different stable effectors of a Hofmann-type carboxamide rearrangement to efficiently and selectively release N-glycans from glycoproteins. Methods: Released glycans obtained from different experimental chemical release approaches were analyzed by HILIC-FLD, BHZ-FACE and ESI-MS and evaluated with respect to electrophoretic mobility, retention time and integrated peak area for resolved glycans. Results: We show that the known Hoffmann catalysts 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, the hypervalent organoiodine (III) compound diacetoxy-iodobenzene as well as in-situ hypobromite generation using Oxone® and potassium bromide are all capable of releasing protein-bound N-glycans in good yield. Among the compounds investigated, diacetoxy-iodobenzene was capable of releasing glycans in the absence of alkali. Detailed investigations of the bromide/Oxone® method revealed a dependence of N-glycan release efficiency from the temporal order of bromide addition to the reaction mix as well as from a molar excess of bromide over Oxone®. Conclusions. These findings suggest that the oxidative release of N-glycans occurs via the initiating steps of a Hofmann carboxamide rearrangement. Hypervalent organoiodine compounds hold the promise of releasing glycans in the absence of alkali. The in-situ generation of hypobromite by bromide/Oxone® produces a consistent defined amount of reagent for rapid N-glycan release for both analytical and preparative purposes.

Abstract
![]()
Conversion of N-Boc-protected quaternary proline
derivatives under thermal Curtius rearrangement conditions was found
to afford a series of ring-opened ketone and unsaturated pyrrolidine
products instead of the expected carbamate species. The nature of
the substituent on the quaternary carbon thereby governs the product
outcome due to the stability of a postulated N-acyliminium
species. A continuous flow process with in-line scavenging was furthermore
developed to streamline this transformation and safely create products
on a gram scale.

Abstract
We report a convenient and practical method for the preparation of nonexplosive cyclic hypervalent iodine(III) oxidants as efficient organocatalysts and reagents for various reactions using Oxone® in aqueous solution under mild conditions at room temperature. The thus obtained 2-iodosobenzoic acids (IBAs) could be used as precursors of other cyclic organoiodine(III) derivatives by the solvolytic derivatization of the hydroxy group under mild conditions of 80 °C or lower temperature. These sequential procedures are highly reliable to selectively afford cyclic hypervalent iodine compounds in excellent yields without contamination by hazardous pentavalent iodine(III) compound.

Abstract
A novel transformation of primary amides to secondary amides promoted by hypervalent iodine reagents was developed. The hypervalent iodine reagent-mediated Hofmann-type rearrangement generated an isocyanate intermediate, which was subsequently trapped by an in situ generated carboxylic acid from the hypervalent iodine reagent to provide the corresponding secondary amides. This method provided a facile and efficient route for the synthesis of secondary amides from primary amides and also revealed novel reactivities of hypervalent iodine reagents.

Abstract
We present the synthesis and the spin switching efficiencies of Ni(II)-porphyrins substituted with azopyridines as covalently attached photoswitchable ligands. The molecules are designed in such a way that the azopyridines coordinate to the Ni ion if the azo unit is in cis configuration. For steric reasons no intramolecular coordination is possible if the azopyridine unit adopts the trans configuration. Photoisomerization of the azo unit between cis and trans is achieved upon irradiation with 505 nm (trans→cis) and 435 nm (cis→trans). Concurrently with the isomerization and coordination/decoordination, the spin state of the Ni ion switches between singlet (low-spin) and triplet (high-spin). Previous studies have shown that the spin switching efficiency is strongly dependent on the solvent and on the substituent at the 4-position of the pyridine unit. We now introduced thiol, disulfide, thioethers, nitrile and carboxylic acid groups and investigated their spin switching efficiency.

Abstract
A metal-free C-H allylation strategy is described to access diverse functionalized ortho-allyl-iodoarenes. The method employs hypervalent (diacetoxy)iodoarenes and proceeds through the iodane-guided "iodonio-Claisen" allyl transfer. The use of allylsilanes bearing electron-withdrawing functional groups unlocks the functionalization of a broad range of substrates, including electron-neutral and electron-poor rings. The resulting ortho-allylated iodoarenes are versatile building blocks, with examples of downstream transformation including a concise synthesis of the experimental antimitotic core of Dosabulin. DFT calculations shed additional light on the reaction mechanism, with notable aspects including the aromatic character of the transition-state structure for the [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement, as well as the highly stereoconvergent nature of the trans-product formation.

Abstract
An alternate formal synthesis of Sitagliptin phosphate is disclosed from 2,4,5-trifluorobenzadehyde in 8 linear steps with an overall yield of 31%. The chiral β-amino acid moiety present in sitaglitpin is installed via an asymmetric hydrogenation followed by a stereoselective Hofmann rearrangement as the key steps. The key chiral intermediate Boc-amino acid 1 prepared by this novel route was further converted to Sitagliptin phosphate following the known literature protocol.

Abstract
Asymmetric organocatalytic oxidations have been witnessed to an impressive development in the last years thanks to the establishment of important chiral hypervalent iodines(III/V). Many different approaches involving both stoichiometric and catalytic versions have provided a fundamental advance in this area within asymmetric synthesis. The easily handing, nontoxic, mild, environmentally friendly (green oxidants), and high stability that are features of these reagents have been applied to many reactions and also have allowed exploring further unprecedented enantioselective transformations. The intention of the present review is thus to highlight as a whole the many approaches utilized up to date to prepare chiral iodines(III/V), as well as their reactivity in a comprehensive manner.

Abstract
Herein, we report a modular synthetic route to linear and branched homoallylic amines that operates through a sequential one-pot Lewis base/transition-metal catalyzed allylic alkylation/Hofmann rearrangement strategy. This protocol is operationally trivial, proceeds from simple and easily prepared substrates and catalysts, and enables all aspects of regio- and stereoselectivity to be controlled through a conserved experimental protocol. Overall, the high levels of enantio-, regio-, and diastereoselectivity obtained, in concert with the ability to access orthogonally protected or free amines, render this a straightforward and effective approach for the preparation of useful enantioenriched homoallylic amines. We have also demonstrated the utility of the products in the context of pharmaceutical synthesis.

Abstract
The first synthesis of a pentacyclic ambiguine (ambiguine P) is reported. The synthesis takes advantage of sequential alkylations of an indole core to rapidly construct the pentacyclic framework of the natural product. Key to the success of the synthesis was the use of a Nicholas reaction to alkylate at C2, crafting a fused seven-membered ring that is characteristic of the pentacyclic ambiguines, as well as the use of an amide-directed functionalization at C12 to set a requisite quaternary center. A versatile late-stage intermediate was prepared that may be applicable to the synthesis of the other pentacyclic ambiguines.

Abstract
Herein we disclose the efficient Pd(II)-catalyzed and regioselective ortho C-H alkenylation of arylacetamide derivatives, viz. weakly coordinating aliphatic primary amides. This protocol utilizes ubiquitous free primary amides as the directing group and circumvents two troublesome steps of installation and removal of an external auxiliary. This strategy directly enables the incorporation of a synthetically versatile olefin in the products in moderate to good yields with regio- and distereoselectivity. The alkenylated acetamides can be easily manipulated and further transformed into a variety of useful derivatives.

Abstract
The preparation, structure, and chemistry of hypervalent iodine compounds are reviewed with emphasis on their synthetic application. Compounds of iodine possess reactivity similar to that of transition metals, but have the advantage of environmental sustainability and efficient utilization of natural resources. These compounds are widely used in organic synthesis as selective oxidants and environmentally friendly reagents. Synthetic uses of hypervalent iodine reagents in halogenation reactions, various oxidations, rearrangements, aminations, C-C bond-forming reactions, and transition metal-catalyzed reactions are summarized and discussed. Recent discovery of hypervalent catalytic systems and recyclable reagents, and the development of new enantioselective reactions using chiral hypervalent iodine compounds represent a particularly important achievement in the field of hypervalent iodine chemistry. One of the goals of this Review is to attract the attention of the scientific community as to the benefits of using hypervalent iodine compounds as an environmentally sustainable alternative to heavy metals.

Abstract
This review summarizes recent research on novel photochemical methods for the initiation and control of the polymerization of main chain fluorinated monomers as exemplified by vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and for the synthesis of their block copolymers. Such reactions can be carried out at ambient temperature in glass tubes using visible light. Novel, original protocols include the use of hypervalent iodide carboxylates alone or in conjunction with molecular iodine, as well as the use of photoactive transition metal carbonyls in the presence of alkyl, fluoroalkyl, and perfluoroalkyl halides. An in-depth study of the reaction parameters highlights the use of dimethyl carbonate as a preferred polymerization solvent and outlines the structure-property relationship for hypervalent iodide carboxylates and halide initiators in both the free radical and iodine degenerative transfer controlled radical polymerization (IDT-CRP) of VDF. Finally, the rational selection of metal carbonyls that are successful not only as IDT mediators but, more importantly, in the quantitative activation of both PVDF-CH2-CF2-I and PVDF-CF2-CH2-I chain ends toward the synthesis of well-defined PVDF block copolymers is presented.

Abstract
A mononuclear Cr(v)-oxo complex, [CrV(O)(6-COO--tpa)](BF4)2 (1; 6-COO--tpa = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-(6-carboxylato-2-pyridylmethyl)amine) was prepared through the reaction of a Cr(iii) precursor complex with iodosylbenzene as an oxidant. Characterization of 1 was achieved using ESI-MS spectrometry, electron paramagnetic resonance, UV-vis, and resonance Raman spectroscopies. The reduction potential (Ered) of 1 was determined to be 1.23 V vs. SCE in acetonitrile based on analysis of the electron-transfer (ET) equilibrium between 1 and a one-electron donor, [RuII(bpy)3]2+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The reorganization energy (λ) of 1 was also determined to be 1.03 eV in ET reactions from phenol derivatives to 1 on the basis of the Marcus theory of ET. The smaller λ value in comparison with that of an Fe(iv)-oxo complex (2.37 eV) is caused by the small structural change during ET due to the dπ character of the electron-accepting LUMO of 1. When benzyl alcohol derivatives (R-BA) with different oxidation potentials were employed as substrates, corresponding aldehydes were obtained as the 2e--oxidized products in moderate yields as determined from 1H NMR and GC-MS measurements. One-step UV-vis spectral changes were observed in the course of the oxidation reactions of BA derivatives by 1 and a kinetic isotope effect (KIE) was observed in the oxidation reactions for deuterated BA derivatives at the benzylic position as substrates. These results indicate that the rate-limiting step is a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from substrate to 1. In sharp contrast, in the oxidation of trimethoxy-BA (Eox = 1.22 V) by 1, trimethoxy-BA radical cation was observed by UV-vis spectroscopy. Thus, it was revealed that the mechanism of the oxidation reaction changed from one-step PCET to stepwise ET-proton transfer (ET/PT), depending on the redox potentials of R-BA.

Abstract
The long-standing quest for chiral hypervalent organoiodine compounds (i.e., iodanes) as metal-free reagents for asymmetric synthesis continues. Although remarkable progress has recently been made in organoiodine-catalyzed reactions using a terminal oxidant in stoichiometric amounts, there is still a significant need for "flaskable" chiral iodane reagents. Herein, we describe the synthesis of new iodobinaphthyls and iodobiphenyls, their successful and selective DMDO-mediated oxidation into either λ(3)- or λ(5)-iodanes, and the evaluation of their capacity to promote asymmetric hydroxylative phenol dearomatization (HPD) reactions. Most notably, a C2-symmetrical biphenylic λ(5)-iodane promoted the HPD-induced conversion of the monoterpene thymol into the corresponding ortho-quinol-based [4+2] cyclodimer (i.e., bis(thymol)) with enantiomeric excesses of up to 94%.

Abstract
A safe and convenient protocol was developed for in situ generation of various dichlorinating agents (cf. Cl2, NCl3, Et4NCl3, ArICl2) from oxone and chloride. The synthetic utility of this protocol was demonstrated by diastereoselective dichlorination of a series of allylic and homoallylic alcohol derivatives with excellent yields and diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
Aromatic substituents migrate in a novel oxidative cyclization mediated by iodine(III) reagents. 4-Arylbut-3-enoic acids are cyclized and rearranged to 4-arylfuran-2(5H)-ones by hypervalent iodine compounds in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Other ring sizes are also accessible. The mechanism of the reaction is described in detail, and calculations highlight the cationic nature of the intermediates in the rearrangement. The fast access to heavily substituted furanones is used for the synthesis of biologically active derivatives.
