Abstract
Responsive synthetic receptors for adaptive recognition of different ionic guests in a competitive environment are valuable molecular tools for not only ion sensing and transport, but also the development of ion-responsive smart materials and related technologies. By virtue of the mechanical chelation and ability to undergo large-amplitude co-conformational changes, described herein is the discovery of a chameleon-like [2]catenane that selectively binds copper(I) or sulfate ions and its associated co-conformational mechanostereochemical switching. This work highlights not only the advantages and versatility of catenane as a molecular skeleton in receptor design, but also its potential in constructing complex responsive systems with multiple inputs and outputs.

Abstract
Fluorophoric [2]pseudorotaxanes {NiPR1(ClO4)2-NiPR3(ClO4)2} are synthesized by utilizing newly designed fluorophoric bidentate ligands (L1-L3) and a heteroditopic naphthalene containing macrocycle (NaphMC) with high yields via Ni(II) templation and π-π stacking interactions. Subsequently, a fluorophoric [2]rotaxane (NAPRTX) is established through a Cu(I) catalysed click reaction between an azide terminated pseudorotaxane, {NiPR4(ClO4)2}, which contains the newly designed fluorophoric ligand L4, and alkyne terminated bulky stopper units. All these fluorophoric [2]pseudorotaxanes and the [2]rotaxane were characterized using numerous techniques such as mass spectrometry, NMR, UV/Vis, PL, and elemental analysis, wherever applicable. Furthermore, to investigate the effect of the fluorophoric moieties, the coordinating ability of chelating units, and size and shape of the three dimensional cavity generated by the mechanical bond in the interlocked [2]rotaxane (NAPRTX), we have performed a sensing study of various metal ions. Thus, the interlocked [2]rotaxane is found to have potential as a selective fluorescent sensor for Zn(II) metal ions over other transition, alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, where the 2,2'-bipyridyl arylvinylene moiety of the axle acts as a fluorescence signalling unit.

Abstract
The rate at which the macrocyclic cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) ring of a bistable [2]rotaxane moves from a tetrathiafulvalene station to an oxyphenylene station upon oxidation of the tetrathiafulvalene station is found to be increased in the presence of added salts. Compared to the salt-free case, 0.1 M solutions of a series of tetraalkylammonium hexafluorophosphate salts (R4N·PF6, R = H, Me, Et or n-Bu) and of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (n-Bu4N·ClO4) all afford an increased switching rate, which is largest in the case of n-Bu4N·ClO4 with smaller anions. Variation in the size of the ammonium cation has no significant effect. These results indicate that the addition of excess ions can be used as an accelerator to speed up shuttling processes in rotaxanes and catenanes based on the mobile cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) ring, and that the choice of anion offers a convenient means of controlling the extent of this effect.

Abstract
This paper reports on the synthesis of a tri-stable [2]rotaxane molecular shuttle, in which the motion of the macrocycle is triggered by either selective protonation/deprotonation or specific carbamoylation/decarbamoylation of an alkylbenzylamine. The threaded axle is surrounded by a dibenzo[24]crown[8] (DB24C8) macrocycle and contains three sites of different binding affinities towards the macrocycle. An N-methyltriazolium moiety acts as a molecular station that has weak affinity for the DB24C8 macrocycle and is located in the centre of the molecular axle. Two other molecular stations, arylammonium and alkylbenzylammonium moieties, sit on either side of the triazolium moiety along the molecular axle and have stronger affinities for the DB24C8 macrocycle. These two ammonium moieties are covalently linked to two different stopper groups at each extremity of the thread: a tert-butylphenyl group and a substituted DB24C8 unit. Owing to steric hindrance, the former does not allow any π-π stacking interactions with the encircling DB24C8 macrocycle, whereas the latter residue does; therefore, this allows the discrimination of the two ammonium stations by the surrounding DB24C8 macrocycle in the fully protonated state. In the deprotonated state, the contrasting reactivity of the amine functional groups, as either a base or a nucleophile, allows for selective reactions that trigger the controlled shuttling of the macrocycle around the three molecular stations.

Abstract
We report on rotaxanes featuring a pyridyl-acyl hydrazone moiety on the axle as a photo/thermal-switchable macrocycle binding site. The pyridyl-acyl E-hydrazone acts as a hydrogen bonding template that directs the assembly of a benzylic amide macrocycle around the axle to form [2]rotaxanes in up to 85% yield; the corresponding Z-hydrazone thread affords no rotaxane under similar conditions. However, the E-rotaxane can be smoothly converted into the Z-rotaxane in 98% yield under UV irradiation. The X-ray crystal structures of the E- and Z-rotaxanes show different intercomponent hydrogen bonding patterns. In molecular shuttles containing pyridyl-acyl hydrazone and succinic amide ester binding sites, the change of position of the macrocycle on the thread can be achieved through a series of light irradiation and heating cycles with excellent positional integrity (>95%) and switching fidelity (98%) in each state.

Abstract
A cyclic network of chemical reactions has been conceived for exchanging the dynamic behaviour of di(acylamino)pyridine-based rotaxanes and surrogates. X-ray diffraction studies revealed the intercomponent interactions in these interlocked compounds and were consistent with those found in solution by dynamic NMR experiments. This particular binding site was incorporated into a molecular shuttle enabled for accessing two states with an outstanding positional discrimination through chemical manipulation. Furthermore, the ability of the di(acylamino)pyridine domain to associate with external binders with a complementary array of HB donor and acceptor sites was exploited for the advance of an unprecedented electrochemical switch operating through a reversible anion radical recognition process.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of an interlocked receptor based on a hydrogen bonded [2]rotaxane containing a hydrazodicarboxamide binding site are reported. An anion recognition process with tetrabutylammonium benzoate triggers the submolecular translational movement of its benzylic amide macrocycle developing a progressive increase of the fluorescence intensity, effectively quenched at the original state. The binding of the anion competes with the hydrogen-bond-connected cyclic component for the bis(urea)-based station pushing it towards a stoppered alkyl chain. Moreover, this interlocked system is able to work as a molecular switch restoring its initial state in two ways, either by an ion exchange reaction or by a high yielding oxidation/reduction sequence.

Abstract
Rotaxane molecular shuttles were studied in which a tetralactam macrocyclic ring moves between a succinamide station and a second station in which the structure is varied. Station 2 in all cases is an aromatic imide, which is a poor hydrogen-bond acceptor in the neutral form, but a strong one when reduced with one or two electrons. When the charge density on the hydrogen-bond-accepting carbonyl groups in station 2 is reduced by changing a naphthalimide into a naphthalene diimide radical anion, the shuttling rate changes only slightly. When station 2 is a pyromellitimide radical anion, however, the shuttling rate is significantly reduced. This implies that the shuttling rate is not only determined by the initial unbinding of the ring from the first station, as previously supposed. An alternative reaction mechanism is proposed in which the ring binds to both stations in the transition state.

Abstract
The preparation and dynamic behavior of degenerate rotaxane molecular shuttles are described in which a benzylic amide macrocycle moves back and forth between two naphthalimide-glycine units along a diphenylethyne spacer or an aliphatic spacer consisting of a C(9), C(12), or C(26) alkyl chain. Subtle differences in the (1)H NMR spectra of the rotaxanes can be related to the presence of conformers in which the macrocycle interacts simultaneously with both glycines, especially in the case of the C(9) spacer. The kinetic data of the shuttling behavior in the C(26) rotaxane were obtained from dynamic NMR spectroscopy. The Eyring activation parameters were found to be ΔH(‡) = 10 ± 1 kcal mol(-1), ΔS(‡) = -6.5 ± 2.0 cal mol(-1) K(-1), ΔG(‡)(298) = 11.9 ± 0.2 kcal mol(-1). For the systems with the shorter spacers, the shuttling rates were higher. Also in the diphenylethyne, rotaxane shuttling is rapid on the NMR time scale, indicating that the rigid unit does not impose a large barrier to the translocation of the macrocycle.
