Zipping up tetraazaperylene: synthesis of tetraazacoronenes via double coupling in the bay positions

Substituted tetraazacoronene fluorophores have been obtained selectively by double Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of symmetrically substituted 1,2-bis(pinacolatoboryl)alkenes with a bay-substituted octaazaperopyrenedioxide (OAPPDO). Subsequent Scholl reaction of the dimethoxyphenylated derivative allowed further π-extension of the azaperylene core, yielding a highly redox-active bis(phenanthro)tetraazacoronene.

Green-Light Responsive Perylene Bisimides for Atom-Economic Thiol Generation and Click-Ligation

Novel methylthiophene/benzo[b]thiophene perylene bisimide thiol-precursors that would generate thiols via a green-light-induced (λ_exc = 530 nm, φ_re = 0.33) photorearrangement are presented herein. The "no-wash", photoreleased thiols thus enabled a subsequent thiol-ene click ligation with electron-deficient substrates. Moreover, by virtue of the intrinsic fluorescence evolution from the rearrangement of perylene bisimide scaffolds, the whole process of thiol formation could be self-reported, further potentiating themselves with application versatilities.

Cyclization of ortho-ethynylbiaryls as an emerging versatile tool for the construction of polycyclic arenes

Cyclization and cycloisomerization of ortho-aryl(ethynyl)arenes provide an easy direct access to fused polycyclic aromatic carbo- and heterocycles. This methodology has demonstrated an impressive progress in the recent years. The goal of this review is to give a comprehensive outlook on the synthetic potential, scope, limitations, and mechanistic aspects of the cyclization reactions. The material is arranged according to the activation method that can be used to induce cyclization: pyrolysis, metal catalysis, electrophilic activation, radical induction, base catalysis. Particular attention is paid to the specificity of ortho-ethynylbiaryls with a heterocyclic central core.

Synthesis, Regioselective Bromination, and Functionalization of Coronene Tetracarboxydiimide

A new method for the effective synthesis of coronene tetracarboxydiimide (CDI) was developed by utilizing inexpensive and nontoxic potassium vinyltrifluoroborate. Controllable brominations of CDI were accomplished to yield CDI mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-bromides, which could be used as synthon and functionalized by aromatic nucleophilic substitution and the Sonogashira coupling reaction.

Nanographene and Graphene Nanoribbon Synthesis via Alkyne Benzannulations

The extension of π-conjugation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via alkyne benzannulation reactions has become an increasingly utilized tool over the past few years. This short review will highlight recent work of alkyne benzannulations in the context of large nanographene as well as graphene nanoribbon synthesis along with a brief discussion of the interesting physical properties these molecules display.

Synthesis of Isomeric Perylenodithiophene Diimides

Two isoelectronic dithiophene-fused perylene diimides (PDTI-1 and PDTI-2) were synthesized via a " bay-derivatization toward lateral extension" strategy. Single-crystal analysis unambiguously confirmed their unique structures and packing arrangements. The new PDTI system manifested significantly red-shifted absorptions with intense bands at 500-700 nm. Further dimerization indicated the potential of these dithiophene-fused PDIs as new building blocks for the construction of versatile rylene dyes in optoelectronic devices.

Regioisomerically pure multiaryl coronene derivatives: highly efficient synthesis via bay-extended perylene tetrabutylester

By a facile strategy, we obtained three pure regioisomers of multiaryl coronene bisimide (CBI) derivatives via IBr-mediated annelation and subsequent Suzuki coupling reactions with high yields. A series of aromatic groups with different electron properties were efficiently introduced to obtain functional CBI derivatives under mild conditions with good yields. Furthermore, the annelation mechanism as well as the optical and electrochemical properties of CBI derivatives were further investigated.

A Low-Temperature, Solution-Processable Organic Electron-Transporting Layer Based on Planar Coronene for High-performance Conventional Perovskite Solar Cells

A low-temperature, solution-processable organic electron-transporting material (ETM) is successfully developed for efficient conventional n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). This ETM can show a high efficiency over 17% on rigid device and 14.2% on flexible PVSC. To the best of our knowledge, this efficiency is among the highest values reported for flexible n-i-p PVSCs with negligible hysteresis thus far.

1,3-Dien-5-ynes: Versatile Building Blocks for the Synthesis of Carbo- and Heterocycles

1,3-Dien-5-ynes have been extensively used as starting materials for the synthesis of a wide number of different carbo- and heterocycles. The aim of this review is to give an overview of their utility in organic synthesis, highlighting the variety of compounds that can be directly accessed from single reactions over these systems. Thus, cycloaromatization processes are initially commented, followed by reactions directed toward the syntheses of five-membered rings, other carbocycles and, finally, heterocycles. The diverse methodologies that have been developed for the synthesis of each of these types of compounds from 1,3-dien-5-ynes are presented, emphasizing the influence of the reaction conditions and the use of additional reagents in the outcome of the transformations.

Cyano- and chloro-substituted coronene diimides as solution-processable electron-transporting semiconductors

Tetracyano- and tetrachlorocoronene diimides with low LUMO levels are developed, exhibiting electron mobilities of up to 0.16 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹ in solution-processed OFETs.

Synthesis of pyridine-fused perylene imides with an amidine moiety for hydrogen bonding

Pyridine-fused perylene tetracarboxylic acid bisimides (PBIs) were synthesized via Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and acid condensation. The fused PBIs with electron-donating substituents exhibited an intramolecular charge transfer interaction. One of the N-alkyl substituents was selectively removed with BBr3 to create an amidine guest binding site. A hydrogen bonding interaction with pentafluorobenzoic acid changed the absorption spectra and enhanced fluorescence.
