Abstract
In this study, we present our findings on the synthesis of α-, β-, γ-carbolines via PIFA/BF3·OEt2-mediated intramolecular cyclization of isomeric azidomethyl(indolyl)acrylates. Alternately, 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene/1,8-diazabicyclo(5.4.0)undec-7-ene (TBD/DBU)-mediated Michael addition followed by intramolecular cyclization of isomeric 2/3-(azidomethyl)indol-3/2-yl)acrylates also furnished the respective β- and γ-carboline derivatives. Unexpectedly, the thermolysis of 2-(azidomethyl)-3-(indol-3-yl)acrylates led to the formation of ethyl 5-(2-(phenylsulfonamido)aryl)nicotinates along with γ-carbolines, via nitrene insertion followed by rearrangement and cyclization. The isomeric 2-(azidomethyl)-3-(indol-2-yl)acrylate upon thermolysis led to the expected δ-carboline. Thermal intramolecular nitrene insertion reaction could also be extended for accessing pyrido benzothiophene, pyrido thiophene, and quinoline.

Abstract
Concise synthesis of functionalized quinolines has received continuous research attention owing to the biological importance and synthetic potential of bicyclic N-heterocycles. However, synthetic routes to the 2,4-unsubstituted alkyl quinoline-3-carboxylate scaffold, which is an important motif in drug design, remain surprisingly limited, with modular protocols that proceed from readily available materials being even more so. We herein report an acidic I2-DMSO system that converts readily available aspartates and anilines into alkyl quinoline-3-carboxylate. This method can be extended to a straightforward synthesis of 3-arylquinolines by simply replacing the aspartates with phenylalanines. Mechanistic studies revealed that DMSO was activated by HI via a Pummerer reaction to provide the C1 synthon, while the amino acid catabolized to the C2 synthon through I2-mediated Strecker degradation. A formal [3 + 2 + 1] annulation of these two concurrently generated synthons with aniline was responsible for the selective formation of the quinoline core. The synthetic utility of this protocol was illustrated by the efficient synthesis of human 5-HT4 receptor ligand. Moreover, an unprecedented chemoselective synthesis of 2-deuterated, 3-substituted quinoline, featuring this reaction, has been established.

Abstract
An iodine-mediated environmentally benign synthesis of multi-substituted quinoline derivatives is developed using a solvent-free mechanochemical process. Appropriately designed and easily accessible protecting group-free aniline derivatives were used for the oxidative annulation reaction, and a series of quinoline derivatives with variable functionalities were synthesized up to 89 % isolated yield. Importantly, the activator iodine remains in the quinoline molecule and promotes further functionalizations. The present methodology is beneficial with regard to operational simplicity and mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
A new strategy for the synthesis of cyclopenta[a]inden-2(1H)-ones has been developed. An intramolecular Pauson-Khand reaction of the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) adducts, derived from 2-alkynyl benzaldehydes, provided the consequent novel cyclopenta[a]inden-2(1H)-ones bearing multifunctionalities including an ester group at the fused ring junction (tert-carbon center). The generality of this approach was illustrated by studying the several MBH derivatives containing diverse substitutions/functionalities.

Abstract
An iodine promoted tandem oxidative condensation of benzylamines and 2-methylquinazolin-4-(3H)-ones was developed to yield imidazo[1,5-a]quinazolin-5(4H)-ones via dual C(sp3)-H amination under metal free conditions in a greener way using molecular oxygen as a terminal oxidant. This tandem transformation provides an efficient approach to construct various functionalized imidazo[1,5-a]quinazolin-5(4H)-ones in a straightforward manner via a sequential amination-oxidation-annulation-aromatisation.

Abstract
A practical I2-mediated aromatic C–H amination reaction was established for benzimidazol-2-one synthesis under transition-metal-free conditions. The present reaction can be performed directly from disubstituted amines and isocyanates without the purification of the urea intermediates in a scalable fashion.

Abstract
The Rh-catalyzed hydroacylative union of aldehydes and o-alkynyl anilines leads to 2-aminophenyl enones, and onward to substituted quinolines. The mild reaction conditions employed in this chemistry result in a process that displays broad functional group tolerance, allowing the preparation of diversely substituted quinolines in high yields. Extension to the use of o-alkynyl nitro arenes as substrates leads to 2-nitrochalcones, from which both quinolines and quinoline N-oxides can be accessed.

Abstract
An efficient NaNO2 /I2 -mediated one-pot transformation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) acetates into alkyl 3-nitro-5-(aryl/alkyl)isoxazole-4-carboxylates is described. In a cascade event, initial Michael addition of NaNO2 to the MBH acetate furnishes the allylnitro intermediate which undergoes I2 -catalyzed oxidative α-CH nitration of the nitromethyl subunit followed by [3+2] cycloaddition to afford the title compounds. Structural elaborations of these highly substituted isoxazoles by SN Ar reactions and hydrogenolysis allows access to useful products.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of 2-aryl 4-substituted quinolines from stable and readily available o-cinnamylanilines, prepared from anilines and cinnamylalcohols, has been developed. The reaction occurred via a regioselective 6-endo-trig intramolecular oxidative cyclization using KO(t)Bu as a mediator and DMSO as an oxidant at rt. The reaction showed a broad substrate scope with good to excellent yields.
