Abstract
Nitroxides, also known as nitroxyl radicals, are long-lived or stable radicals with the general structure R1R2N-O•. The spin distribution over the nitroxide N and O atoms contributes to the thermodynamic stability of these radicals. The presence of bulky N-substituents R1 and R2 prevents nitroxide radical dimerization, ensuring their kinetic stability. Despite their reactivity toward various transient C radicals, some nitroxides can be easily stored under air at room temperature. Furthermore, nitroxides can be oxidized to oxoammonium salts (R1R2N═O+) or reduced to anions (R1R2N-O-), enabling them to act as valuable oxidants or reductants depending on their oxidation state. Therefore, they exhibit interesting reactivity across all three oxidation states. Due to these fascinating properties, nitroxides find extensive applications in diverse fields such as biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials science, and organic synthesis. This review focuses on the versatile applications of nitroxides in organic synthesis. For their use in other important fields, we will refer to several review articles. The introductory part provides a brief overview of the history of nitroxide chemistry. Subsequently, the key methods for preparing nitroxides are discussed, followed by an examination of their structural diversity and physical properties. The main portion of this review is dedicated to oxidation reactions, wherein parent nitroxides or their corresponding oxoammonium salts serve as active species. It will be demonstrated that various functional groups (such as alcohols, amines, enolates, and alkanes among others) can be efficiently oxidized. These oxidations can be carried out using nitroxides as catalysts in combination with various stoichiometric terminal oxidants. By reducing nitroxides to their corresponding anions, they become effective reducing reagents with intriguing applications in organic synthesis. Nitroxides possess the ability to selectively react with transient radicals, making them useful for terminating radical cascade reactions by forming alkoxyamines. Depending on their structure, alkoxyamines exhibit weak C-O bonds, allowing for the thermal generation of C radicals through reversible C-O bond cleavage. Such thermally generated C radicals can participate in various radical transformations, as discussed toward the end of this review. Furthermore, the application of this strategy in natural product synthesis will be presented.

Abstract
A new photocatalytic system was developed for carrying out desulfonylative α-oxyamination reactions of α-sulfonylketones in which α-ketoalkyl radicals are generated. The catalytic system is composed of benzimidazolium aryloxide betaines (BI+-ArO-), serving as visible light-absorbing electron donor photocatalysts, and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO), playing dual roles as an electron donor for catalyst recycling and a reagent to capture the generated radical intermediates. Information about the detailed nature of BI+-ArO- and the photocatalytic processes with TEMPO was gained using absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical measurements, and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
α-Tertiary hydroxyimines were stereoselectively synthesized from enantioenriched N-tert-butanesulfinyl ketimines using potassium tert-butoxide, molecular oxygen, and trimethyl phosphite. The stereoselective hydroxylation of acyclic ketimines bearing two sterically similar α-substituents was achieved by controlling the geometry of the metalloenamine intermediates and the facial selectivity of hydroxylation. The synthetic utility of the resulting α-tertiary hydroxyimines was demonstrated through the successful diastereoselective synthesis of highly substituted β-amino alcohols.

Abstract
Catalytic chemoselective reactions of innately less reactive functionalities over more reactive functionalities are described. A cooperative catalyst comprising a soft Lewis acid/hard Brønsted base enabled chemoselective activation of a hydroxyl group over an amino group, allowing for nucleophilic addition to electron-deficient olefins. The reaction could be applicable for a variety of amino alcohols, including pharmaceuticals, without requiring a tedious protection-deprotection process. Chemoselective enolization and subsequent α-functionalization of carboxylic acid derivatives were also achieved by a redox active catalyst through the radical process, providing unnatural α-amino/hydroxy acid derivatives bearing a complex carbon framework and a diverse set of functionalities. The present chemoselective catalysis described herein offers new opportunities to expand the chemical space for innovative drug discovery research.

Abstract
Oxazolidinone-based sodiated enolates (Evans enolates) were generated using sodium diisopropylamide (NaDA) or sodium hexamethyldisilazide (NaHMDS) in the presence of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), ( R,R)- trans- N,N,N',N'-tetramethylcyclohexanediamine [( R,R)-TMCDA], or ( S,S)-TMCDA. 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis in conjunction with the method of continuous variations (MCV), x-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) computations revealed the enolates to be octahedral bis-diamine-chelated monomers. Rate and computational studies of an alkylation with allyl bromide implicate a bis-diamine-chelated-monomer-based transition structure. The sodiated Evans enolates form mixed dimers with NaHMDS, NaDA, or sodium 2,6-di- tert-butylphenolate, the reactivities of which are examined. Stereoselective quaternizations, aldol additions, and azaaldol additions are described.

Abstract
Low-valent early transition metals are often intrinsically highly reactive as a result of their strong propensity toward oxidation to more stable high-valent states. Harnessing these highly reducing complexes for productive reactivity is potentially powerful for C-C bond construction, organic reductions, small-molecule activation and many other reactions that offer orthogonal chemoselectivity and/or regioselectivity patterns to processes promoted by late transition metals. Recent years have seen many exciting new applications of low-valent metals through building new catalytic and/or multicomponent reaction manifolds out of classical reactivity patterns. In this Review, we survey new methods that employ early transition metals and invoke low-valent precursors or intermediates in order to identify common themes and strategies in synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
The first method to access unsymmetrical aliphatic acyloins is presented. The method relies on a fast 1,3-hydride shift mediated by an IrIII complex in allylic alcohols followed by oxidation with TEMPO+ . The direct conversion of allylic alcohols into acyloins is achieved in a one-pot procedure. Further functionalization of the Cα' of the α-amino-oxylated ketone products gives access to highly functionalized unsymmetrical aliphatic ketones, which further highlights the utility of this transformation.

Abstract
Diastereoselective α-hydroxylation using molecular oxygen has been achieved with chiral α-alkyl N-tert-butanesulfinyl imidates and α-aryl N'-tert-butanesulfinyl amidines. The aza-enolates generated from deprotonation of imidates/amidines can be intercepted by O2 with excellent diastereocontrol and subsequently transformed into α-hydroxylation products in the presence of the reductant trimethyl phosphite.

Abstract
Organic synthesis boasts a wide array of reactions involving either radical species or ionic intermediates. The combination of radical and polar species, however, has not been explored to a comparable extent. Herein we present the hydrative aminoxylation of ynamides, a reaction which can proceed by either a polar-radical crossover mechanism or through a rare cationic activation. Common to both processes is the versatility of the persistent radical TEMPO and its oxidised oxoammonium derivative TEMPO+ . The unique mechanisms of these processes are elucidated experimentally and by in-depth DFT-calculations.

Abstract
A comprehensive analysis of the influence of the chiral auxiliary on the α-aminoxylation of titanium(iv) enolates with TEMPO indicated that (S) 4-tert-butyl-1-oxazolidine-2-thione is the most appropriate scaffold to provide a single diastereomer in high yields for a variety of substrates, which converts such a radical reaction into a highly chemo- and stereoselective oxidation.

Abstract
Quantum chemical calculations have unveiled the unexpected biradical character of titanium(IV) enolates from N-acyl oxazolidinones and thiazolidinethiones. The electronic structure of these species therefore involves a valence tautomerism consisting of an equilibrium between a closed shell (formally Ti(IV) enolates) and an open shell, biradical, singlet (formally Ti(III) enolates) electronic states, whose origin is to be basically found in changes of the Ti-O distance. Spectroscopic studies of the intermediate species lend support to such a model, which also turns out to be crucial for a better understanding of the overall reactivity of titanium(IV) enolates. In this context, a thorough computational analysis of the radical addition of titanium(IV) enolates from N-acyl oxazolidinones to TEMPO has permitted us to suggest an entire mechanism, which accounts for the experimental details and the diastereoselectivity of the process. All together, this evidence highlights the relevance of biradical intermediates from titanium(IV) enolates and may be a useful contribution to the foundations of a more insightful comprehension of the structure and reactivity of titanium(IV) enolates.

Abstract
The results of a combination of (6)Li and (13)C NMR spectroscopic and computational studies of oxazolidinone-based lithium enolates-Evans enolates-in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution revealed a mixture of dimers, tetramers, and oligomers (possibly ladders). The distribution depended on the structure of the oxazolidinone auxiliary, substituent on the enolate, and THF concentration (in THF/toluene mixtures). The unsolvated tetrameric form contained a D(2d)-symmetric core structure, whereas the dimers were determined experimentally and computationally to be trisolvates with several isomeric forms.
