Abstract
Indoles and their derivatives have dominated a significant proportion of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds and play an essential role in synthetic and medicinal chemistry, pesticides, and advanced materials. Compared with conventional synthetic strategies, direct functionalization of indoles provides straightforward access to construct diverse indole scaffolds. As we enter an era emphasizing green and sustainable chemistry, utilizing environment-friendly solvents represented by water demonstrates great potential in synthesizing valuable indole derivatives. This review aims to depict the critical aspects of aqueous-mediated indoles functionalization over the past decade and discusses the future challenges and prospects in this fast-growing field. For the convenience of readers, this review is classified into three parts according to the bonding modes (C-C, C-N, and C-S bonds), which focus on the diversity of indole derivatives, the prominent role of water in the chemical process, and the types of catalyst systems and mechanisms. We hope this review can promote the sustainable development of the direct functionalization of indoles and their derivatives and the discovery of novel and practical organic methods in aqueous phase.

Abstract
Symmetrical diaryl sulfides and diaryl disulfides have been efficiently and selectively constructed via the homocoupling of sodium arenesulfinates. The selectivity of products relied on the different reaction systems: symmetrical diaryl sulfides were predominately obtained under the Pd(OAc)2 catalysis, whereas symmetrical diaryl sulfides were exclusively yielded in the presence of the reductive Fe/HCl system.

Abstract
A novel and efficient method for the selective synthesis of sulfinylated benzofulvenes has been developed through the BF3·Et2O-promoted electrophilic addition/cyclization of 1,3-enynes. This metal-free cascade reaction employs readily accessible arylsulfinic acids as sulfinyl cation sources at room temperature and provides a wide range of functionalized benzofulvenes in good to excellent yields under mild conditions.

Abstract
Chiral sulfinyl compounds, sulfoxides, sulfoximines, sulfinamides, and other derivatives, play an important role in asymmetric synthesis as versatile auxiliaries, ligands, and catalysts. They are also recognized as pharmacophores found in already marketed and well-sold drugs (e.g., esomeprazole) and used in drug design. This review is devoted to the modern methods of preparation of sulfinyl derivatives in enantiopure or enantiomerically enriched form. Selected new approaches leading to racemic products for which the asymmetric variant can be developed in the future are mentioned as well.

Abstract
An unexpected time-controlled highly selective C3- or C2-sulfinylation of pyrroles with sulfinamides is reported for the first time. The sulfinylation of indoles with sulfinamides using this protocol is oxidant-free and can be performed under obviously more feasible conditions (1.2 equiv. of indoles, 10 min) in comparison with the precedent procedure (3-20 equiv. of indoles, 16-18 h, ammonium persulfate as oxidant, hv). A variety of functional groups were tolerated, and various C2-thioindoles and C2/3-thiopyrroles were obtained in moderate to excellent yields.

Abstract
A series of bis-arylsulfenylated indoles (10), benzofurans (3), and benzothiophenes (3) and of monosulfenylated indoles (5), 12 of which are novel, were prepared in good yields via a Cu-catalysed direct sulfenylation of benzoheterocycles with arylsulfonyl hydrazides. Sulfonothioates are probably the major thiolated intermediates in this transformation.

Abstract
A novel and efficient method for selective synthesis of diaryl sulfoxides and m-arylthio sulfones has been achieved from readily available arylsulfinic acids and arenes via an unusual sulfinyl cation, providing a range of structurally diverse products in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Notably, mechanistic investigations suggested m-arylthio sulfones were generated from diaryl sulfoxides and sulfinyl cation by a sequence of redox reaction and electrophilic aromatic substitution process.

Cooperative catalysis by bovine serum albumin-iodine towards cascade oxidative coupling-C(sp(2))-H sulfenylation of indoles/hydroxyaryls with thiophenols on water. Org Biomol Chem 2018; 14:6111-8. Abstract
Cooperative cascade catalysis by bovine serum albumin (BSA)-iodine allows for the first time the performance of C(sp(2))-H sulfenylation of indole from readily available thiophenol (-SH bond) via in situ generation/cleavage of disulfide (S-S bond) in air under aqueous conditions, whereas BSA or I2 individually do not permit this two step sequence to occur in the same pot towards C-S bond formation. This green cooperative protocol is extendable to sulfenylation of hydroxyaryls (i.e. 2-naphthol or 4-hydroxycoumarin) with diverse thiols (aryl/heteroaryl) without using any toxic metal catalysts, bases or oxidants, thus rendering the process environmentally and economically reliable. Further, the gram scale synthesis of a COX-2 inhibitor (3-(pyridin-2-ylthio)-1H-indole), regioselectivity and recyclability (up to four cycles) are the additional merits of this cooperative cascade bio-chemocatalytic (BSA-I2) protocol. Moreover, HPLC and ESI-MS provide powerful insights into the mechanistic aspects of the above cascade sulfenylation reaction.

Abstract
Metal-free C-H thioarylation of arenes and heteroarenes using methyl sulfoxides constitutes a general protocol for the synthesis of high value diaryl sulfides. The coupling of arenes and heteroarenes with in situ activated sulfoxides is regioselective, uses readily available starting materials, is operationally simple, and tolerates a wide range of functional groups.

Abstract
The sulfinylation reaction of aromatic and hetero-aromatic compounds with sulfinic esters as electrophiles has been investigated in different ionic liquids and by means of different Lewis acid salts in order to get moderate to good yields of asymmetrical sulfoxides. Mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and aluminum chloride were found to be the most efficient and recyclable reaction framework. Ultrasound sonication appeared to be the most useful and green activation method to afford the sulfoxides in yields better than or equivalent to those obtained under the longer-lasting conventional stirring conditions.

Abstract
A regioselective C-H sulfanylation of aryl sulfoxides with alkyl aryl sulfides in the presence of acid anhydride was developed, which resulted in the formation of 1,4-disulfanylarenes after dealkylation of initially formed sulfonium salts. The reaction began with Pummerer-type activation of aryl sulfoxides followed by nucleophilic attack of alkyl aryl sulfides. The nucleophilic attack occurred exclusively at the para positions, or at specific positions in case the para position was not available, under perfect control by the dominating sulfoxide directors regardless of any other substituents. The initially formed aryl sulfonium salts were isolable and usefully served as aryl halide surrogates for palladium-catalyzed arylation with sodium tetraarylborates.

Abstract
A general and direct C3 functionalization of free (N-H) indoles with readily available electrophiles such as acid chlorides, chloroformates, thionyl chloride, and methylsulfonyl chloride via a common N-indolyl triethylborate intermediate is reported. The reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions in up to 93% yield. Indoles with substituents at the C2, C4, C5, C6, and C7 positions are well tolerated. The easy accessibility of a variety of important 3-acylindoles, indole-3-carboxylic esters, indole-3-sulfinic acids, and 3-(methylsulfonyl)indoles demonstrates the high degree of compatibility and practicability of this method.

Abstract
An unprecedented method for the synthesis of β-alkoxy sulfides via a NaI/HBr-mediated three-component oxysulfenylation reaction of alkenes with arylsulfinic acids and alcohols is reported. Furthermore, I2-promoted oxysulfenylation of alkenes using sodium arylsulfinates instead of arylsulfinic acids to synthesise various β-alkoxy sulfides is also described.
