Highly sensitive and selective off-on fluorescent platform for tricresyl phosphate flame retardant based on twisted intramolecular charge transfer probe

BACKGROUND

Tricresyl phosphate (TCP), a typical organic phosphorus flame retardant (OPFR), is an emerging pollutant that causes great concern in recent years due to its high neurotoxicity and reproductive toxicity, etc. Conventional analysis methods for TCP such as gas chromatography and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry exhibit high sensitivity and accuracy. However, these techniques generally suffer from certain limitations, such as high cost, bulky equipment, time-consuming and operator-dependent properties. Therefore, the establishment of fast and efficient analytical methods for TCP still remains a great challenge.

RESULT

A "turn on" fluorescence sensing strategy for the efficient detection of TCP was established, based on a unique molecular rotor probe of 9-(2,2-dicyanovinyl)-julolidine (DCVJ). The introduction of TCP led to a significant enhancement of the fluorescence intensity of DCVJ. The results show that twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process might play an important role for this enhancement of fluorescence response via dynamic light scattering measurements and fluorescence lifetime analysis. Further investigations demonstrate that the hydrophobic interaction and conjugation effect between DCVJ and TCP constrain the molecular rotation and vibration of DCVJ, thereby regulating the TICT process, which contribute to this intriguing "turn on" behavior. In view of this, a new sensing platform with excellent performance for TCP was established, which offers quick response time, high selectivity, wide linear range (20-1200 ng mL-1, 1600-8000 ng mL-1), and low detection limit (4.82 ng mL-1).

SIGNIFICANCE

The established new sensing platform for TCP demonstrates the advantages of simplicity, high efficiency, excellent sensitivity and selectivity. The obtained results are also superior to some other previously reported fluorescence methods. This work opens up a new perspective for the efficient detection of emerging OPFRs pollutants.

A three-component network for OFF/ON catalysis was built from a protonated nanoswitch and a luminophore. Its activation by addition of silver(i) triggered the proton-catalyzed formation of a biped and the assembly of a fast slider-on-deck (k ₂₉₈ = 540 kHz).

Label free optical biosensor for insulin using naturally existing chromene mimic synthesized receptors: A greener approach

We currently reporting a simple and first label free optical insulin biosensor using a novel cum naturally existing Chromene mimic receptors via one pot greener methodology. Among synthesized 4H- Chromene derivatives, 2-amino-5,7-dihydroxy-4-(4-nitrophenyl)-4H-chromene-3-carbonitrile (Compound 1c) is showed a very good colorimetric response for insulin within the linear range of 20 fM -500 pM along with theoretically measured LOD of 15.38 fM based on the increment in absorbance. Meanwhile 2-amino-5, 7-dihydroxy-4-(pyren-2-yl)-4H-chromene-3-carbonitrile (Compound 1a) is depicted an excellent quenching in fluorescence response for insulin with LOD of 7.07 fM and along with wide working range from 10 fM -600 pM. The developed biosensor is tested for the detection of insulin in human blood serum using direct as well as standard addition method and the recovery results are showed a very good agreement with standard clinical chemiluminescent assay method. Hence, this developed biosensor is more reliable for clinical detection of Insulin and so a good analytical method for Diabetes diagnosis within a short period of time.

Over one century after discovery: pyrylium salt chemistry emerging as a powerful approach for the construction of complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules

Over one century after its discovery, pyrylium salt chemistry has been extensively applied in preparing light emitters, photocatalysts, and sensitizers. In most of these studies, pyrylium salts acted as versatile precursors for the preparation of small molecules (such as furan, pyridines, phosphines, pyridinium salts, thiopyryliums and betaine dyes) and poly(pyridinium salt)s. In recent decades, pyrylium salt chemistry has emerged as a powerful approach for constructing complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules. In this perspective, we attempt to summarize the representative efforts of synthesizing and self-assembling large, complex architectures using pyrylium salt chemistry. We believe that this perspective not only highlights the recent achievements in pyrylium salt chemistry, but also inspires us to revisit this chemistry to design and construct macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules with increasing complexity and desired function.

Thieno[3,2-c]pyran: an ESIPT based fluorescence “turn-on” molecular chemosensor with AIE properties for the selective recognition of Zn2+ ion

Thieno[3,2-c]pyran was synthesized as a fluorescent turn-on chemosensor for the selective recognition of Zn²⁺ ions with a low detection limit (0.67 μM), and it also exhibited AIE properties.

Synthesis of Fluorescent 1,7-Dipyridyl-bis-pyrazolo[3,4-b:4',3'-e]pyridines: Design of Reversible Chemosensors for Nanomolar Detection of Cu2

An efficient access toward novel tridentate ligands based on 1,7-dipyridinyl-substituted bis-pyrazolo[3,4-b:4',3'-e]pyridines (BPs) and their usefulness as fluorescent probes for cation detection is reported. The synthesis proceeds by a three-step sequence starting from 2-chloropyridine (1), all reactions were performed using microwave radiation under solvent-free conditions, and an overall yield of up to 63% was obtained. Photophysical properties of three representative 1,7-dipyridinyl-BPs (PBPs, 6a-6c) substituted at position 4 with different donor (D) or acceptor (A) groups were investigated. Compounds exhibited large Stokes shift in different solvents and strong blue light emission in both solution and solid state, and quantum yields were as high as 88% for some of them; thus, a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) fluorescence mechanism characteristic of the 1,4,7-triaryl-BPs was confirmed. The 4-phenyl-substituted probe (Ph-PBP, 6b) was used successfully in the detection of some metals (Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Hg2+) by fluorescence quenching phenomena, which could be reversed in the presence of ethylenediamine. This probe showed a greater sensitivity toward Cu2+ in concentrations as low as 26 nM, and in the process of "on-off-on" for this fluorescent molecular switch, only 1 equiv of the analyte was used.

A New Sensitive and Selective Off-On Fluorescent Zn2+ Chemosensor Based on 3,3',5,5'-Tetraphenylsubstituted Dipyrromethene

3,3',5,5'-Tetraphenyl-2,2'-dipyrromethene was described as a highly sensitive and selective Off-on fluorescent colorimetric chemosensor for Zn²⁺ based on the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect. The reaction of dipyrromethene ligand with Zn²⁺ induces the formation of the [ZnL₂] complex, which exhibits the increasing fluorescence in 120 fold compared with ligand in the propanol-1/cyclohexane (1:30) binary mixture. The Zn²⁺ detection limit was 1.4 × 10^-7 М. The UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopic studies demonstrated that the dipyrromethene sensor was highly selective toward Zn²⁺ cations over other metal ions (Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, Mn²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺), excluding Hg²⁺.

Solvent-dependent "turn-on" fluorescence chemosensor for Mg(2+) based on combination of C=N isomerization and inhibition of ESIPT mechanisms

A fluorescent chemosensor (L) for Mg(2+) has been synthesized and characterized, which exhibits turn-on fluorescence response for Mg(2+) only in alcohol solvent (methanol or ethanol) with high sensitivity and selectivity. But in both nonpolar and polar solvents (cyclohexane, DCM, DMSO or MeCN), L showed negligible fluorescent response for Mg(2+). In order to discover the unique phenomenon, optical measurements, liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and a high performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD) of L and L with Mg(2+) ions in solvents were studied. In alcohol solvent, [L+alcohol molecule] was formed and the mechanism aspect of L concerning the remarkable fluorescence response for Mg(2+) has been discussed.

A fluorescent probe for the detection of Mg(ii) and Cu(ii) and its application for imaging in living cells

A novel fluorescent probe 7-[4′-hydroxy-3′-(5′′-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl)styryl]nalidixic acid (HBIN) was synthesized that contains two independent fluorophores and acts as a very sensitive and selective probe for Mg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions.

Selective fluorescence sensing of Mg2+ ions by Schiff base chemosensor: effect of diamine structural rigidity and solvent

A new "turn-on" naphthalenedimide-based chemosensor for mercury ions with high selectivity: successful utilization of the mechanism of twisted intramolecular charge transfer, near-IR fluorescence, and cell images

For the first time, a new near-IR "turn-on" fluorescent chemosensor with high selectivity for Hg(2+) ions was designed according to the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) mechanism. The selective fluorescence enhancement effect can be optimized by modulating the solvent systems. And this naphthalenedimide-based sensor with long wavelength absorption and emission can be used to image intracellular Hg(2+) ions in living Hela cells.

Electronically tuned 1,3,5-triarylpyrazolines as Cu(I)-selective fluorescent probes

We have prepared and characterized a Cu(i)-responsive fluorescent probe, constructed using a large tetradentate, 16-membered thiazacrown ligand ([16]aneNS(3)) and 1,3,5-triaryl-substituted pyrazoline fluorophores. The fluorescence contrast ratio upon analyte binding, which is mainly governed by changes of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) driving force between the ligand and fluorophore, was systematically optimized by increasing the electron withdrawing character of the 1-aryl-ring, yielding a maximum 50-fold fluorescence enhancement upon saturation with Cu(i) in methanol and a greater than 300-fold enhancement upon protonation with trifluoroacetic acid. The observed fluorescence increase was selective towards Cu(i) over a broad range of mono- and divalent transition metal cations. Previously established Hammett LFERs proved to be a valuable tool to predict two of the PET key parameters, the acceptor potential (E(A/A(-)) and the excited state energy DeltaE(00), and thus to identify a set of pyrazolines that would best match the thermodynamic requirements imposed by the donor potential E(D(+)/D) of the thiazacrown receptor. The described approach should be applicable for rationally designing high-contrast pyrazoline-based PET probes selective towards other metal cations.
