Abstract
Quantum chemical calculations of the six valence isoelectronic complexes [FeL2]2-, [CoL2]-, and NiL2 with L = η4-P4, η4-C4H4 using density functional theory have been carried out. The molecular structures were investigated with a variety of methods. The analysis of the electronic structure in [Fe(η4-P4)2]2- shows that the bonding situation is very similar to valence isoelectronic Ni(η4-C4H4)2. The orbital interactions in the 18 electron complexes [TML2]q (TMq = Fe2-, Co-, Ni) come mainly from TM(dπ)→L2 backdonation, enhanced by smaller contributions from TM(dδ)→L2 backdonation and TM(s)←L2 donation. Calculations of the six TML2 species indicate that all of them are viable candidates for synthetic work. The bonding situation is very similar and can straightforwardly be explained with the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson bonding model in terms of dative bonding between d10 metal atoms and the ligands in the electronic singlet state. EDA-NOCV calculations using the ligands and the metal atoms with different charges and electronic states indicate that the metal-ligand bonds in the charged complexes [FeL2]2- and [CoL2]- are best described with fragments in the electronic triplet state between the metal atoms with d8 configuration and triplet ligands. The singlet fragments give the degenerate TM(dπ)→L2 π backdonation as the strongest component, whereas the triplet fragments have the related electron-sharing TMq (dπ)-(L2)2- π bonding as the major component, differing only by the assignment of the bonded two electrons to one or both fragments. The calculations of the charge distribution using the Hirshfeld and Voronoi partitioning methods suggest that the metal atoms are nearly neutral or carry small negative charges in all complexes. The NBO method gives erratic charges, because of the neglect of the 4p AOs of the transition metals as genuine valence orbitals.

Abstract
Since the dawn of organometallic chemistry, transition metal complexes of unsaturated organic molecules, namely π-complexes, have remained a central focus: our thorough understanding of the electronic nature of such species, and their importance in countless reactive processes continues to drive research in their synthesis and utilisation. Since the late 1900s, research regarding the related chemistry for the heavier group 14 elements has become increasingly more fervent. Today, heavier congeners of a vast array of classical π-complexes have been realised, from alkene to arene systems, involving Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb. This has given deeper insights into the bonding observed for these heavier elements, which typically involves a lessened degree of π-bonding and an increased polarisation. This review aims to summarise this field, identifying these disparities, and highlighting areas which we believe may be exciting for future exploration.

Abstract
Reactions of bis(benzene)chromium (Bz2Cr) and ozone (O3) were studied using low-temperature argon matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy with supporting DFT calculations. When Bz2Cr and O3 were co-deposited, they reacted upon matrix deposition to produce two new prominent peaks in the infrared spectrum at 431 cm-1 and 792 cm-1. These peaks increased upon annealing the matrix to 35 K and decreased upon UV irradiation at λ = 254 nm. The oxygen-18 and mixed oxygen-16,18 isotopic shift pattern of the peak at 792 cm-1 is consistent with the antisymmetric stretch of a symmetric ozonide species. DFT calculations of many possible ozonide products of this reaction were made. The formation of a hydrogen ozonide (H2O3) best fits the original peaks and the oxygen-18 isotope shift pattern. Energy considerations lead to the conclusion that the chromium-containing product of this reaction is the coupled product benzene-chromium-biphenyl-chromium-benzene (BzCrBPCrBz). 2Bz2Cr+O3→H2O3+BzCrBPCrBz, ∆Ecalc=-52.13kcal/mol.

Abstract
Catalytic π-arene activation is based on catalysts that allow for arene exchange. To date, cyclopentadiene (Cp)-derived catalysts are the most commonly used in π-arene activation despite their low arene exchange rates. Herein, we report the synthesis, analysis, and catalytic application of Ru(II) complexes supported by phenoxo ligands, which are isolobal alternatives to Cp. The phenoxo complexes exhibit arene exchange rates significantly faster than those of the corresponding Cp complexes. The rate can be further increased through the choice of appropriate counterions. The mechanism of the arene exchange process is elucidated by kinetic and computational analyses. We demonstrate the utility of the new catalysts through an SNAr reaction between fluorobenzene and alcohols, including secondary alcohols that could not be used previously in related reactions. Moreover, the catalytic thermal decarboxylation of phenylacetic acids is presented.

Abstract
Reaction of the terphenyl bis(anilide) ligand [{K(DME)2}2LAr] (LAr = {C6H4[(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC6H4]2}2-) with trivalent chloride "MCl3" salts (M = Ce, U, Np) yields two distinct products; neutral LArM(Cl)(THF) (1M) (M = Np, Ce), and the "-ate" complexes [K(DME)2][(LAr)Np(Cl)2] (2Np) or ([LArM(Cl)2(μ-K(X)2)])∞ (2Ce, 2U) (M = Ce, U) (X = DME or Et2O) (2M). Alternatively, analogous reactions with the iodide [MI3(THF)4] salts provide access to the neutral compounds LArM(I)(THF) (3M) (M = Ce, U, Np, Pu). All complexes exhibit close arene contacts suggestive of η6-interactions with the central arene ring of the terphenyl backbone, with 3M comprising the first structurally characterized Pu η6-arene moiety. Notably, the metal-arene bond metrics diverge from the predicted trends of metal-carbon interactions based on ionic radii, with the uranium complexes exhibiting the shortest M-Ccentroid distance in all cases. Overall, the data presents a systematic study of f-element M-η6-arene complexes across the early actinides U, Np, Pu, and comparison to cerium congeners.

Abstract
Addition of [UI2(THF)3(μ-OMe)]2·THF (2·THF) to THF solutions containing 6 equiv. of K[C14H10] generates the heteroleptic dimeric complexes [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2]2[U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]2·4THF (118C6·4THF) and {[K(THF)3][U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]}2 (1THF) upon crystallization of the products in THF in the presence or absence of 18-crown-6, respectively. Both 118C6·4THF and 1THF are thermally stable in the solid-state at room temperature; however, after crystallization, they become insoluble in THF or DME solutions and instead gradually decompose upon standing. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals 118C6·4THF and 1THF to be structurally similar, possessing uranium centres sandwiched between bent anthracenide ligands of mixed tetrahapto and hexahapto ligation modes. Yet, the two complexes are distinguished by the close contact potassium-arenide ion pairing that is seen in 1THF but absent in 118C6·4THF, which is observed to have a significant effect on the electronic characteristics of the two complexes. Structural analysis, SQUID magnetometry data, XANES spectral characterization, and computational analyses are generally consistent with U(iv) formal assignments for the metal centres in both 118C6·4THF and 1THF, though noticeable differences are detected between the two species. For instance, the effective magnetic moment of 1THF (3.74 μB) is significantly lower than that of 118C6·4THF (4.40 μB) at 300 K. Furthermore, the XANES data shows the U LIII-edge absorption energy for 1THF to be 0.9 eV higher than that of 118C6·4THF, suggestive of more oxidized metal centres in the former. Of note, CASSCF calculations on the model complex {[U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]2}2− (1*) shows highly polarized uranium–arenide interactions defined by π-type bonds where the metal contributions are primarily comprised by the 6d-orbitals (7.3 ± 0.6%) with minor participation from the 5f-orbitals (1.5 ± 0.5%). These unique complexes provide new insights into actinide–arenide bonding interactions and show the sensitivity of the electronic structures of the uranium atoms to coordination sphere effects. Use of Chatt metal-arene protocols with uranium leads to the synthesis of the first well-characterized, unsupported actinide–arenide sandwich complexes. The electronic structures of the actinide centres show a key sensitivity to ion pairing effects.![]()

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of the bis(η6 -benzene)lithium cation, the benzene metallocene of the lightest metal, is reported. The boron compound FmesBCl2 [Fmes: 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] reacted with three molar equivalents of the lithio-acetylene reagent Li-C≡C-Fmxyl [Fmxyl: 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]. Subsequent crystallization from benzene gave the [bis(η6 -benzene)Li]+ cation with the [{FmesB(-C≡C-Fmxyl)3 }2 Li]- anion. This parent [(arene)2 Li]+ cation shows an eclipsed arrangement of the pair of benzene ligands at the central lithium cation with uniform carbon-lithium bond lengths. The corresponding [(η6 -toluene)2 Li]+ and [(η6 -durene)2 Li]+ containing salts were similarly prepared. The bis(arene)lithium cations were characterized by X-ray diffraction, by solid-state 7 Li MAS NMR spectroscopy and their bonding features were analyzed by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Transition-metal sandwich complexes play key roles in various fields such as fundamental and applied chemistry; many of their unique properties arise from their ability to form stable or reactive ions. The first mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectra of mixed sandwich compounds, (Ch)(Cp)Cr and (Cot)(Cp)Ti (Ch = η7-C7H7, Cp = η5-C5H5, Cot = η8-C8H8), presented in this work provide an extremely accurate description of the electron detachment. The ionization energies of the neutrals and stabilization energies of the metal-ligand interactions upon ionization are derived from the MATI data with an accuracy of 0.0006 eV. In combination with DFT calculations, laser threshold ionization spectroscopy reveals surprisingly different structural variations accompanying the detachment of the non-bonding dz2 electron from the sandwich molecules. The geometry of (Ch)(Cp)Cr remains practically unchanged while the ionization of (Cot)(Cp)Ti causes a noticeable shortening of the inter-ring distance, similar to that resulting from the ionization of a typical antibonding orbital. Electron density analysis throws light on the nature of these amazing effects.

Abstract
Although the application of arene-osmium(II) complexes in homogeneous catalysis has been much less studied than that of their ruthenium analogues, different works have shown that, in some instances, a comparable or even superior effectiveness can be achieved with this particular class of compounds. This review article focuses on the catalytic applications of arene-osmium(II) complexes. Among others, transfer hydrogenation, hydrogenation, oxidation, and nitrile hydration reactions, as well as different C-C bond forming processes, are comprehensively discussed.

Abstract
ConspectusTransition-metal catalysis has traditionally been dominated by precious metals because of their high reactivity toward chemical transformations. As a cost-effective alternative, catalysis by earth-abundant group 6 metal chromium is underdeveloped, and its reactivity remains largely unexplored, although the industrially important Phillips catalyst, which is composed of Cr as the active metal, is currently used to supply almost 40% of the total world demand for high-density polyethylene. Cr has traditionally served in organoreagents with high-valent states (≥2+), which are typified by reactions involving Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi (NHK) and Takai-Utimoto one-electron transfer processes. Given that low-valent metals usually facilitate the process of oxidative addition (OA), studying the catalysis of Cr in the low-valent state provides the opportunity to develop new transformations. However, probably because of the low stability of reactive low-valent Cr or the lack of catalytic activity of structurally stable complexes, there has been limited success with respect to developing catalysis promoted by low-valent Cr. In recent years, our group has probed the reactivity of low-valent Cr in catalysis by adopting a strategy of forming reactive Cr in situ. In this Account, we detail our efforts to study the catalytic behavior and mechanism of low-valent Cr in challenging transformations, such as the cleavage of chemically inert bonds for the cross-coupling and hydrofunctionalization of arenes and nitro motifs, by developing strategies to address the prominent selectivity issues. We highlight the finding that low-valent Cr, being formed in situ, possesses the intriguing ability to promote the catalytic cleavage of unactivated C-O, C-N, and C-H bonds to achieve the Kumada couplings and even to enable challenging cross-coupling between two unactivated C(aryl)-O/C(aryl)-N bonds. During these catalytic processes, Cr usually adopts a high-spin state to interact with chemicals, allowing for insertion into unactivated σ-bonds. The OA catalytic model involving a two-electron process for the cleavage of unactivated bonds has rarely been considered for Cr. We highlight the finding that Cr allows for the breakage of two chemically inert bonds in one catalytic cycle. This ability is intriguing because most transition metals are suitable only for the cleavage of one unactivated bond in catalysis. Mechanisms involving two-electron OA for Cr are unusual, with processes involving one-electron transfer more often proposed, as exemplified in the NHK reactions. These reactions provide efficient strategies for forming functionalized benzaldehydes, amides, anilines, and amines, usually with high levels of selectivity. We hope that this account will extend the scope of cognition to Cr catalysis.

Abstract
The π coordination of arene and anionic heteroarene ligands is a ubiquitous bonding motif in the organometallic chemistry of d-block and f-block elements. By contrast, related π interactions of neutral heteroarenes including neutral bora-π-aromatics are less prevalent particularly for the f-block, due to less effective metal-to-ligand backbonding. In fact, π complexes with neutral heteroarene ligands are essentially unknown for the actinides. We have now overcome these limitations by exploiting the exceptionally strong π donor capabilities of a neutral 1,4-diborabenzene. A series of remarkably robust, π-coordinated thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) half-sandwich complexes were synthesized by simply combining the bora-π-aromatic with ThCl4 (dme)2 or UCl4 , representing the first examples of actinide complexes with a neutral boracycle as sandwich-type ligand. Experimental and computational studies showed that the strong actinide-heteroarene interactions are predominately electrostatic in nature with distinct ligand-to-metal π donation and without significant π/δ backbonding contributions.

Abstract
Recent advances on substituent effects in transition metal bisarene complexes studied with high-resolution threshold ionization spectroscopy are reviewed to demonstrate new aspects of the ligand influence on electronic structures of sandwich molecules. Unprecedented accuracy in the determination of ionization energies provided by the laser techniques makes it possible to reveal and describe quantitatively such fine phenomena as isotope effects, the mutual substituent influence or variations of substituent effects on replacing the central metal atom with its Group analogues. In combination with DFT calculations, laser ionization spectroscopy unveils mechanisms of the ligand influence on unique redox properties of sandwich complexes which are of key importance for their practical use.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and spectroscopic identification of the trisbenzene complexes of strontium and barium M(Bz)3 (M=Sr, Ba) in low-temperature Ne matrix. Both complexes are characterized by a D3 symmetric structure involving three equivalent η6 -bound benzene ligands and a closed-shell singlet electronic ground state. The analysis of the electronic structure shows that the complexes exhibit metal-ligand bonds that are typical for transition metal compounds. The chemical bonds can be explained in terms of weak donation from the π MOs of benzene ligands into the vacant (n-1)d AOs of M and strong backdonation from the occupied (n-1)d AO of M into vacant π* MOs of benzene ligands. The metals in these 20-electron complexes have 18 effective valence electrons, and, thus, fulfill the 18-electron rule if only the metal-ligand bonding electrons are counted. The results suggest that the heavier alkaline earth atoms exhibit the full bonding scenario of transition metals.

Abstract
In this article, we explore the capacity of formed Schiff base complexes to trap metal atoms or ions, using their aromatic ends. The intrinsic geometry of each complex defines the process of substitution. Two cases were studied; one involving a trans Schiff base complex and the other considering how a salen ligand, with nickel systems traps chromium. We also assessed the nature of the new bonds and the frontier molecular orbitals. Graphical abstract Two salen nickel compounds are joint by a Cr(0) atom forming an organometallic interaction.

Abstract
Known stable [Cr(bpy)2(Ph)2](BPh4) complexes undergo reductive elimination of biphenyl with visible-light photolysis using household incandescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs. A series of [Cr(R-bpy)2(Ar)2](X) complexes (R = H or CMe3; Ar = Ph, C6H4-CMe3, or C6H4-OMe; X = I, BPh4, or PF6) were prepared, and the effect of varying the bipyridine and aryl ligands on the UV-visible spectra and electrochemistry of the chromium(III) complexes was investigated. Photolysis of a mixture of two different bis(aryl) complexes gave only the homocoupled biaryl products by 1H NMR and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. The initial product of photoinduced reductive elimination of [Cr(bpy)2(Ar)2](PF6) was trapped with bipyridine to generate [Cr(bpy)3](PF6) and with benzoyl peroxide to form [Cr(bpy)2(O2CPh)2](PF6). The latter chromium(III) bis(benzoate) complex was also synthesized by the addition of bipyridine and PhCO2H to Cp2Cr, followed by air oxidation. The neutral Cr(bpy)(S2CNMe2)Ph2 complex also generated biphenyl upon visible-light photolysis. While the treatment of Cr(tBu-bpy)(dpm)Cl2 [dpm = (OCtBu)2CH] with AgO2CPh gave trans-Cr(tBu-bpy)(dpm)(O2CPh)2, reaction of the dichloro precursor with PhMgCl produced anionic [Cr(tBu-bpy)Ph3]- with [Mg(dpm)(THF)4]+ as the countercation, with both complexes characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Protonolysis of Cr(bpy)Ph3(THF) with 8-hydroxyquinoline produced Cr(bpy)(quin)Ph2, which generated biphenyl under visible-light photolysis, and the initial product of reductive elimination was trapped by bipyridine or benzoyl peroxide. A related Cr(bpy)(quin)2 complex was synthesized by protonolysis of Cr(bpy)[N(SiMe3)2]2 and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The synthetic procedure is amenable to boryl- and silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl and cyclooctatetraenyl ligands, thereby yielding the first functionalized derivatives. We found that the synthesis of the silyl-substituted mixed sandwich complexes produces higher yields when the ligand exchange is carried out stepwise, by isolating the intermediate trimethylsilylated half-sandwich complex [Sc(η8 -C8 H7 SiMe3 )Cl(THF)] (THF=tetrahydrofuran). The molecular structures of the parent complex, as well as of its mono-boryl-substituted derivatives, have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In addition, the optical and electrochemical properties of the mixed sandwich complexes are reported.

Abstract
To explore the coordination chemistry of dibenzopentalene dianion, reactions of two dilithium dibenzopentalenides having different silyl substituents with Cr(CO)3 (CH3 CN)3 were investigated. The products were unexpected anionic complexes, [Li(Et2 O)]+ [Cr(η5 -9-hydrodibenzopentalenyl)(CO)3 ]- . The proton at the 9-position is derived from Cr(CO)3 (CH3 CN)3 , as evidenced by the use of Cr(CO)3 (CD3 CN)3 . The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the chromium is coordinated by an anionic five-membered ring of the pentalene skeleton, and the lithium atom is coordinated by oxygen atoms of the carbonyl groups. The complexes form a dimer or a cage-like tetramer via carbonyl-lithium interactions, depending on the bulk of the silyl groups. The cubic tetramer appears to retain its cage structure in nonpolar solvents such as benzene.
