Abstract
A series of ruthenium alkenylacetylide complexes trans-[Ru{C≡CC(=CH2 )R}Cl(dppe)2 ] (R=Ph (1 a), c C4 H3 S (1 b), 4-MeS-C6 H4 (1 c), 3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene (DMBT) (1 d)) or trans-[Ru{C≡C-c C6 H9 }Cl(dppe)2 ] (1 e) were allowed to react with the corresponding propargylic alcohol HC≡CC(Me)R(OH) (R=Ph (A), c C4 H3 S (B), 4-MeS-C6 H4 (C), DMBT (D) or HC≡C-c C6 H10 (OH) (E) in the presence of TlBF4 and DBU to presumably give alkenylacetylide/allenylidene intermediates trans-[Ru{C≡CC(=CH2 )R}{C=C=C(Me)}(dppe)2 ]PF6 ([2]PF6 ). These complexes were not isolated but deprotonated to give the isolable bis(alkenylacetylide) complexes trans-[Ru{C≡CC(=CH2 )R}2 (dppe)2 ] (R=Ph (3 a), c C4 H3 S (3 b), 4-MeS-C6 H4 (3 c), DMBT (3 d)) and trans-[Ru{C≡C-c C6 H9 }2 (dppe)2 ] (3 e). Analogous reactions of trans-[Ru(CH3 )2 (dmpe)2 ], featuring the more electron-donating 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane (dmpe) ancillary ligands, with the propargylic alcohols A or C and NH4 PF6 in methanol allowed isolation of the intermediate mixed alkenylacetylide/allenylidene complexes trans-[Ru{C≡CC(=CH2 )R}{C=C=C(Me)}(dmpe)2 ]PF6 (R=Ph ([4 a]PF6 ), 4-MeS-C6 H4 ([4 c]PF6 ). Deprotonation of [4 a]PF6 or [4 c]PF6 gave the symmetric bis(alkenylacetylide) complexes trans-[Ru{C≡CC(=CH2 )R}2 (dmpe)2 ] (R=Ph (5 a), 4-MeS-C6 H4 (5 c)), the first of their kind containing the dmpe ancillary ligand sphere. Attempts to isolate bis(allenylidene) complexes [Ru{C=C=C(Me)R}2 (PP)2 ]2+ (PP=dppe, dmpe) from treatment of the bis(alkenylacetylide) species 3 or 5 with HBF4 ⋅ Et2 O were ultimately unsuccessful.

Abstract
Complex [OsH(=C=C=CPh2)(CH3CN)2(PiPr3)2]BF4 (1) reacts with primary and secondary alcohols to give the corresponding dehydrogenated alcohols and the hydride-carbene derivative [OsH(=CHCH=CPh2)(CH3CN)2(PiPr3)2]BF4 (2), as a result of hydrogen transfer reactions from the alcohols to the Calpha-Cbeta double bond of the allenylidene ligand of 1. The reactions with phenol and t-butanol, which do not contain any beta-hydrogen, afford the alkoxy-hydride-carbyne complexes [OsH(OR)(CCH=CPh2)(CH3CN)(PiPr3)2]BF4 (R = Ph (3), tBu (4)), as a consequence of the 1,3-addition of the O-H bond of the alcohols to the metallic center and the Cbeta atom of the allenylidene of 1. On the basis of the reactions of 1 with these tertiary alcohols, deuterium labeling experiments, and DFT calculations, the mechanism of the hydrogenation is proposed. In acetonitrile under reflux, the Os-C double bond of 2 undergoes hydrogenation to give 1,1-diphenylpropene and [Os{CH2CH(CH3)PiPr2(CH3CN)3(PiPr3)]BF4 (11), containing a metalated phosphine ligand. This reaction is a first-order process with activation parameters of DeltaH = 89.0 +/- 6.3 kJ mol-1 and DeltaS = -43.5 +/- 9.6 J mol-1 K-1. The X-ray structures of 2 and 3 are also reported.

Abstract
Two methodologies of C-C bond formation to achieve organometallic complexes with 7 or 9 conjugated carbon atoms are described. A C7 annelated trans-[Cl(dppe)2Ru=C=C=C-CH=C(CH2)-C[triple bond]C-Ru(dppe)2Cl][X] (X = PF6, OTf) complex is obtained from the diyne trans-[Cl(dppe)2Ru-(C[triple bond]C)2-R] (R = H, SiMe3) in the presence of [FeCp2][PF6] or HOTf, and C7 or C9 complexes trans-[Cl(dppe)2Ru-(C[triple bond]C)n-C(CH3)=C(R1)-C(R2)=C=C=Ru(dppe)2Cl][X] (n = 1, 2; R1 = Me, Ph, R2 = H, Me; X = BF4, OTf) are formed in the presence of a polyyne trans-[Cl(dppe)2Ru-(C[triple bond]C)n-R] (n = 2, 3; R = H, SiMe3) with a ruthenium allenylidene trans-[Cl(dppe)2Ru=C=C=C(CH2R1)R2][X]. These reactions proceed under mild conditions and involve cumulenic intermediates [M+]=(C=)nCHR (n = 3, 5), including a hexapentaenylidene. A combination of chemical, electrochemical, spectroscopic (UV-vis, IR, NIR, EPR), and theoretical (DFT) techniques is used to show the influence of the nature and conformation of the bridge on the properties of the complexes and to give a picture of the electron delocalization in the reduced and oxidized states. These studies demonstrate that the C7 bridging ligand spanning the metal centers by almost 12 angstroms is implicated in both redox processes and serves as a molecular wire to convey the unpaired electron with no tendency for spin localization on one of the halves of the molecules. The reactivity of the C7 complexes toward protonation and deprotonation led to original bis(acetylides), vinylidene-allenylidene, or carbyne-vinylidene species such as trans-[Cl(dppe)2Ru[triple bond]C-CH=C(CH3)-CH=C(CH3)-HC=C=Ru(dppe)2Cl][BF4]3.

Abstract
The involvement of a catalytic metal vinylidene species was proposed for the first time in 1986 to explain the regioselective formation of vinyl carbamates directly from terminal alkynes, carbon dioxide, and amines. Since this initial report, various metal vinylidenes and allenylidenes, which are key activation intermediates, have proved extremely useful for many alkyne transformations. They have contributed to the rational design of new catalytic reactions. This 20th anniversary is a suitable occasion to present the advancement of organometallic vinylidenes and allenylidenes in catalysis.

Abstract
The allenylidene-ruthenium complexes [(eta6-arene)RuCl(=C=C=CR2)(PR'3)]OTf (R2 = Ph; fluorene, Ph, Me; PR'3 = PCy3, P(i)Pr3, PPh3) (OTf = CF3SO3) on protonation with HOTf at -40 C are completely transformed into alkenylcarbyne complexes [(eta6-p-cymene)RuCl([triple bond]CCH=CR2)(PR3)](OTf)2. At -20 degrees C the latter undergo intramolecular rearrangement of the allenylidene ligand, with release of HOTf, into the indenylidene group in derivatives [(eta6-arene)RuCl(indenylidene)(PR3)]OTf. The in situ-prepared indenylidene-ruthenium complexes are efficient catalyst precursors for ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctene and cyclopentene, reaching turnover frequencies of nearly 300 s(-1) at room temperature. Isolation of these derivatives improves catalytic activity for the ring-closing metathesis of a variety of dienes and enynes. A mechanism based on the initial release of arene ligand and the in situ generation of the active catalytic species RuCl(OTf)(=CH2)(PR3) is proposed.

Abstract
The elongated dihydrogen complex [formula: see text](1) reacts with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol and 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol to give the hydride-hydroxyvinylidene-pi-alkynol derivatives [OsH{=C=CHC(OH)R2}{eta2-HC(triple bond)CC(OH)R2}(PiPr3)2]BF4 (R = Ph (2), Me (3)), where the pi-alkynols act as four-electron donor ligands. Treatment of 2 and 3 with HBF(4) and coordinating solvents leads to the dicationic hydride-alkenylcarbyne compounds [OsH((triple bond)CCH=CR2)S2(PiPr3)2][BF4]2 (R = Ph, S = H(2)O (4), CH(3)CN (5); R = Me, S = CH(3)CN (6)), which in acetonitrile evolve into the alkenylcarbene complexes [Os(=CHCH=CR2)(CH3CN)3(PiPr3)2][BF4](2) (R = Ph (7), Me (8)) by means of a concerted 1,2-hydrogen shift from the osmium to the carbyne carbon atom. Treatment of 2-propanol solutions of 5 with NaCl affords OsHCl2((triple bond)CCH=CPh2)(PiPr3)2 (10), which reacts with AgBF(4) and acetonitrile to give [OsHCl((triple bond)CCH=CPh2)(CH3CN)(PiPr3)2]BF(4) (11). In this solvent complex 11 is converted to [OsCl(=CHCH=CPh2)(CH3CN)2(PiPr3)2]BF(4) (12). Complex 5 reacts with CO to give [Os(=CHCH=CPh2)(CO)(CH3CN)2(PiPr3)2][BF(4)](2) (15). DFT calculations and kinetic studies for the hydride-alkenylcarbyne to alkenylcarbene transformation show that the difference of energy between the starting compounds and the transition states, which can be described as eta(2)-carbene species [formula: see text] increases with the basicity of the metallic center. The X-ray structures of 4 and 7 and the rotational barriers for the carbene ligands of 7, 8, and 12 are also reported.
