Reaction of the Transition Metal Hydrides [Cp*MH2]2 (Cp* = η5-C5Me5; M = Fe, Ru) with BH3·THF to Yield Metallaboranes. Improved Kinetic Control Leads to Novel Ferraboranes

Dehydrogenation of iron amido-borane and resaturation of the imino-borane complex

We report on the first isolation and structural characterization of an iron phosphinoimino-borane complex Cp*Fe(η²-H₂B Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> NC₆H₄PPh₂) by dehydrogenation of iron amido-borane precursor Cp*Fe(η¹-H₃B–NHC₆H₄PPh₂). Significantly, regeneration of the amido-borane complex has been realized by protonation of the iron(ii) imino-borane to the amino-borane intermediate [Cp*Fe(η²-H₂B–NHC₆H₄PPh₂)]⁺ followed by hydride transfer. These new iron species are efficient catalysts for 1,2-selective transfer hydrogenation of quinolines with ammonia borane.

Dehydrogenation of an amido-borane iron complex provides an imino-borane complex. Regeneration of the amido-borane precursor was achieved by protonation of the imino-borane followed by hydride transfer to the amino-borane intermediate.

Toward Transition-Metal-Templated Construction of Arylated B4 Chains by Dihydroborane Dehydrocoupling

The reactivity of a diruthenium tetrahydride complex towards three selected dihydroboranes was investigated. The use of [DurBH₂ ] (Dur=2,3,5,6-Me₄ C₆ H) and [(Me₃ Si)₂ NBH₂ ] led to the formation of bridging borylene complexes of the form [(Cp*RuH)₂ BR] (Cp*=C₅ Me₅ ; 1 a: R=Dur; 1 b: R=N(SiMe₃ )₂ ) through oxidative addition of the B-H bonds with concomitant hydrogen liberation. Employing the more electron-deficient dihydroborane [3,5-(CF₃ )₂ -C₆ H₃ BH₂ ] led to the formation of an anionic complex bearing a tetraarylated chain of four boron atoms, namely Li(THF)₄ [(Cp*Ru)₂ B₄ H₅ (3,5-(CF₃ )₂ C₆ H₃ )₄ ] (4), through an unusual, incomplete threefold dehydrocoupling process. A comparative theoretical investigation of the bonding in a simplified model of 4 and the analogous complex nido-[1,2(Cp*Ru)₂ (μ-H)B₄ H₉ ] (I) indicates that there appear to be no classical σ-bonds between the boron atoms in complex I, whereas in the case of 4 the B₄ chain better resembles a network of three B-B σ bonds, the central bond being significantly weaker than the other two.

The Bonding Situation in the Dinuclear Tetra-Hydrido Complex [{5CpFe}2(μ-H)4] Revisited by Hard X-Ray Spectroscopy

High energy resolution fluorescence detected XANES (HERFD-XANES) and valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (VtC-XES) are introduced as powerful tools to investigate hydride-iron interaction, the possible iron-iron bond, and iron spin state of the dinuclear tetra-hydrido complex [{⁵CpFe}₂(μ-H)₄] (1H, ⁵Cp = η⁵-C₅ iPr₅) by thoroughly accessing the geometric and electronic structure of this complex in comparison to the nonhydride reference [⁵CpCpFe] (1, Cp = C₅H₅). The so far observed most intense hydride induced signals in the pre-edge feature of the HERFD-XANES and in the VtC-XES spectra at the iron K-edge allow a precise analysis of the LUMO and HOMO states, respectively, by application of time-dependent density function theory (TD-DFT) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results of these calculations are further employed to understand the oxidation state, spin states, and potential Fe-Fe bonds in this complex.

Synthesis and structure of heterometallic complexes (RhFe, CoFe) containing bridging 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecarborane-1,2-dichalcogenolato ligands

The prototype hetero-binuclear complexes containing metal-metal bonds, {CpRh[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (Cp = Cp* = eta 5-Me5C5, E = S(5a), Se(5b); Cp = Cp = eta 5-1,3-tBu2C5H3, E = S(6a), Se(6b)) and {CpCo[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (Cp = Cp* = eta 5-Me5C5, E = S(7a), Se(7b); Cp = Cp = eta 5-C5H5, E = S(8a), Se(8b)) were obtained from the reactions of 16-electron complexes CpRh[E2C2(B10H10)] (Cp = Cp*, E = S(1a), Se(1b); Cp = Cp, E = S(2a), Se(2b)), CpCo[E2C2(B10H10)] (Cp = Cp*, E = S(3a), Se(3b); Cp = Cp, E = S(4a), Se(4b)) with Fe(CO)5 in the presence of Me3NO. The molecular structures of {Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (E = S(5a), Se(5b)), {CpRh[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (6a) {Cp*Co[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (7a) and {CpCo[S2C2(B10H10)]}[Fe(CO)3] (8a) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All these complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectra.

Reaction of BH4−with {Mo2Cp2(μ-SMe)n} species to give tetrahydroborato, hydrido or dimetallaborane compounds: control of product by ancillary ligands

The reaction of mono- or dichloro-dimolybdenum(III) complexes [Mo2Cp2(mu-SMe)2(mu-Cl)(mu-Y)] (Cp=eta5-C5H5; 1, Y=SMe; 2, Y=PPh2; 3, Y=Cl) with NaBH4 at room temperature gave in high yields tetrahydroborato (8), hydrido (9) or metallaborane (12) complexes depending on the ancillary ligands. The correct formulation of derivatives and has been unambigously determined by X-ray diffraction methods. That of the hydrido compound 9 has been established in solution by NMR analysis and confirmed by an X-ray study of the mu-azavinylidene derivative [Mo2Cp2(mu-SMe)2(mu-PPh2)(mu-N=CHMe)] (10) obtained from the insertion of acetonitrile into the Mo-H bond of 9. Reaction of NaBH4 with nitrile derivatives, [Mo2Cp2(mu-SMe)4-n(CH3CN)2n]n+(5, n=1; 6 n=2), afforded the tetrahydroborato compound 8, together with a mu-azavinylidene species [Mo2Cp2(mu-SMe)3(mu-N=CHMe)](14), when n=1, and the metallaborane complex 12, together with a mixed borohydrato-azavinylidene derivative [Mo2Cp2(mu-SMe)2(mu-BH4)(mu-N=CHMe)] (13), when n=2. The molecular structures of these complexes have been confirmed by X-ray analysis. Preparations of some of the starting complexes (3 and 4) are also described, as are the molecular structures of the precursors [Mo2Cp2(mu-SMe)2(mu-X)(mu-Y)] (1, X/Y=Cl/SMe; 2, X/Y=Cl/PPh2; 4, X/Y=SMe/PPh2).
