Abstract
Fifteen rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes of the form fac-[Re(N,O')(CO)3(X)], where N,O'-bidentate ligand = 2-picolinic acid (Pico); 3,5-difluoropyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Dfpc); 3-trifluoromethyl-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Tfpc) and X = H2O; pyrazole (Pz); pyridine (Py); imidazole (Im); and methanol (CH3OH) were synthesized using the '2 + 1' mixed ligand approach with an average yield of 84%. The complexes were characterized using the following spectroscopic techniques: IR, 1H and 13C NMR, UV/Vis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effect of the fluorine atoms on the backbone of the N,O'-bidentate ligand was investigated and a trend was noticed in the carbonyl stretching frequencies: with Pico < Tfpc < Dfpc. The in vitro biological screening on Vero (healthy mammalian), HeLa (cervical carcinoma) and A549 (lung cancer) cells revealed one toxic complex, fac-[Re(Pico)(CO)3(H2O)], with respective LC50 values of 9.0 ± 0.9, 15.8 ± 4.9 (SI = 0.570) and 20.9 ± 0.8 (SI = 0.430) μg/mL. As a result, it can be used as a positive control drug of toxicity.

Abstract
By attaching pyridine groups to a diaza[6]helicene, a helical, bis-ditopic, bis-N N-coordinating ligand can be accessed. Dinuclear rhenium complexes featuring this bridging ligand, of the form [{Re(CO)3 Cl}2 (N N-N N)], have been prepared and resolved to give enantiopure complexes. These complexes are phosphorescent in solution at room temperature under one- and two-photon excitation. Their experimental chiroptical properties (optical rotation, electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized emission) have been measured. They show, for instance, emission dissymmetry factors of c.a. ±3x10-3 . Quantum-chemical calculations indicate the importance of stereochemistry on the optical activity, pointing towards further design improvements in such types of complexes.

Abstract
The development of fluorescent ligands for the estrogen receptor (ER) continues to be of interest. Over the past 20 years, most efforts have focused on appending an expanding variety of fluorophores to the B-, C- and D-rings of the steroidal scaffold. This review highlights the synthesis and evaluation of derivatives substituted primarily at the 6-, 7α- and 17α-positions, culminating with our recent work on 11β-substituted estradiols, and proposes an approach to new fluorescent imaging agents that retain high ER affinity.

Abstract
Although the interactions of transition metal complexes with biological molecules have been extensively studied, the use of luminescent transition metal complexes as intracellular sensors and bioimaging reagents has not been a focus of research until recently. The main advantages of luminescent transition metal complexes are their high photostability, long-lived phosphorescence that allows time-resolved detection, and large Stokes shifts that can minimize the possible self-quenching effect. Also, by the use of transition metal complexes, the degree of cellular uptake can be readily determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. For more than a decade, we have been interested in the development of luminescent transition metal complexes as covalent labels and noncovalent probes for biological molecules. We argue that many transition metal polypyridine complexes display triplet charge transfer ((3)CT) emission that is highly sensitive to the local environment of the complexes. Hence, the biological labeling and binding interactions can be readily reflected by changes in the photophysical properties of the complexes. In this laboratory, we have modified luminescent tricarbonylrhenium(I) and bis-cyclometalated iridium(III) polypyridine complexes of general formula [Re(bpy-R(1))(CO)3(py-R(2))](+) and [Ir(ppy-R(3))2(bpy-R(4))](+), respectively, with reactive functional groups and used them to label the amine and sulfhydryl groups of biomolecules such as oligonucleotides, amino acids, peptides, and proteins. Additionally, using a range of biological substrates such as biotin, estradiol, and indole, we have designed luminescent rhenium(I) and iridium(III) polypyridine complexes as noncovalent probes for biological receptors. The interesting results generated from these studies have prompted us to investigate the possible applications of luminescent transition metal complexes in intracellular systems. Thus, in the past few years, we have developed an interest in the cytotoxic activity, cellular uptake, and bioimaging applications of these complexes. Additionally, we and other research groups have demonstrated that many transition metal complexes have facile cellular uptake and organelle-localization properties and that their cytotoxic activity can be readily controlled. For example, complexes that can target the nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus have been identified. We anticipate that this selective localization property can be utilized in the development of intracellular sensors and bioimaging reagents. Thus, we have functionalized luminescent rhenium(I) and iridium(III) polypyridine complexes with various pendants, including molecule-binding moieties, sugar molecules, bioorthogonal functional groups, and polymeric chains such as poly(ethylene glycol) and polyethylenimine, and examined their potentials as biological reagents. This Account describes our design of luminescent rhenium(I) and iridium(III) polypyridine complexes and explains how they can serve as a new generation of biological reagents for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Metal-carbonyl complexes are attractive structures for bio-imaging. In addition to unique vibrational properties due to the CO moieties enabling IR and Raman cell imaging, the appropriate choice of ancillary ligands opens up the opportunity for luminescence detection. Through a classification by techniques, past and recent developments in the application of metal-carbonyl complexes for vibrational and luminescence bio-imaging are reviewed. Finally, their potential as bimodal IR and luminescent probes is addressed.

Abstract
Three novel Ru(II) complexes of the general formula [Ru(N-N)(2)(Norharman)(2)](SO(3)CF(3))(2), where N-N = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (DIP, 3) and Norharman (9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole) is a naturally occurring β-carboline alkaloid, have been synthesized and characterized. The molecular structures of 1 and 2 have been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The cellular uptake efficiencies, in vitro cytotoxicities and apoptosis-inducing properties of these complexes have been extensively explored. Notably, 1-3 exhibit potent antiproliferative activities against a panel of human cancer cell lines with IC(50) values lower than those of cisplatin. Further studies show that 1-3 can cause cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase and induce apoptosis through mitochondrial dysfunction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In vitro DNA binding studies have also been conducted to provide information about the possible mechanism of action.

Abstract
Tricarbonylchloro-rhenium(i) (1-4) and catecholato-platinum(ii) complexes (6, 7) of diimine ligands bearing phenol and O-protected phenol substituents have been prepared and fully characterised including single crystal structure analyses of 1, 4 and 7. The redox behaviour of the catecholato platinum(ii) complexes 6 and 7 has been probed by cyclic voltammetry, preparative oxidation and EPR spectroscopy (6˙(+), 7˙(+)). Reversible deprotonation of the hydroxy substituted complexes 1, 3 and 6 to 1(-), 3(-) and 6(-) resulted in significant changes in their electronic spectra. The luminescence properties of the diamagnetic complexes have been investigated using emission spectroscopy. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were invoked to shed some light onto the geometric and electronic structures as well as the experimental spectroscopic properties of the neutral complexes 1-7, the radical cations 6˙(+) and 7˙(+) and the conjugate bases 1(-), 3(-) and 6(-).
