Abstract
Bipyridines are ubiquitous in organic and inorganic chemistry because of their redox and photochemical properties and their utility as ligands to transition metals. Cationic substituents on bipyridines and azaarenes are valuable as powerful electron-withdrawing functionalities that also enhance solubility in polar solvents, but there are no general methods for direct functionalization. A versatile method for the preparation of trimethylammonium- and triarylphosphonium-substituted bipyridines and azaheterocycles is disclosed. This methodology showcases a C-H activation of pyridine N-oxides that enables a highly modular and scalable synthesis of a diverse array of cationically charged azaarenes. The addition of trimethylammonium functionalities on bipyridine derivatives resulted in more anodic reduction potentials (up to 700 mV) and increased electrochemical reversibility compared to the neutral unfunctionalized bipyridine. Additonally, metallation of 4-triphenylphosphinated biquinoline to make the corresponding Re(CO)3Cl complex resulted in reduction potentials 400 mV more anodic than the neutral derivative.

Abstract
The search for new metal-based photosensitizers (PSs) for anticancer photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a fast-developing field of research. Knowing that polymetallic complexes bear a high potential as PDT PSs, in this study, we aimed at combining the known photophysical properties of a rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complex and a ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complex to prepare a ruthenium-rhenium binuclear complex that could act as a PS for anticancer PDT. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of such a system and discuss its stability in aqueous solution. In addition, one of our complexes prepared, which localized in mitochondria, was found to have some degree of selectivity towards two types of cancerous cells: human lung carcinoma A549 and human colon colorectal adenocarcinoma HT29, with interesting photo-index (PI) values of 135.1 and 256.4, respectively, compared to noncancerous retinal pigment epithelium RPE1 cells (22.4).

Abstract
Tricarbonylchloro-rhenium(i) (1-4) and catecholato-platinum(ii) complexes (6, 7) of diimine ligands bearing phenol and O-protected phenol substituents have been prepared and fully characterised including single crystal structure analyses of 1, 4 and 7. The redox behaviour of the catecholato platinum(ii) complexes 6 and 7 has been probed by cyclic voltammetry, preparative oxidation and EPR spectroscopy (6˙(+), 7˙(+)). Reversible deprotonation of the hydroxy substituted complexes 1, 3 and 6 to 1(-), 3(-) and 6(-) resulted in significant changes in their electronic spectra. The luminescence properties of the diamagnetic complexes have been investigated using emission spectroscopy. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were invoked to shed some light onto the geometric and electronic structures as well as the experimental spectroscopic properties of the neutral complexes 1-7, the radical cations 6˙(+) and 7˙(+) and the conjugate bases 1(-), 3(-) and 6(-).
