Abstract
The Guerbet reaction is important for the synthesis of longer-chain monoalcohols like isobutanol through catalytic transfer hydrogenation from short-chain methanol and ethanol. However, the mechanism becomes complicated, especially considering the variations in the different metal-ligand cooperation (MLC) catalysts used. In order to further understand the Guerbet reaction, DFT studies were performed to figure out the detailed mechanism initiated by the unique Mn-PCP MLC Catalyst. Our results suggest that even with the assistance of the carbanion site of the PCP ligand, the direct substitution mechanism is less favored than the condensation-reduction mechanism. The key step of the reaction is the final reduction of the carbonyl, in which the 1,4-reduction of the unsaturated aldehyde is prior to the 3,4-reduction or 1,2-reduction due to the stronger interaction between the catalyst and the substrate. It is found that the production of isobutanol is preferred over n-butanol because of the lower total free energy barrier and lower relative free energy of the product. Finally, by changing the electronic effect of the carbanion site of the catalyst, we found that the relation between the electronic effect and the highest free energy span was not monotonous and a point with optimal electronic effect exists numerically.

Abstract
The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of vanadium pyridonate complexes are described. Vanadium(III) pyridonate complexes were accessed through protonolysis and reduction of a tetrakis(amido)vanadium(IV) starting material. Bis(pyridonate) vanadium(IV) precursors could be isolated depending on the amount of proteoligand added. The targeted vanadium(III) species tend to form dimers, but monomeric complexes can be achieved in the presence of neutral donors such as amines or pyridine derivatives or through the use of sterically demanding proligands. The reduction process is proposed to involve dimeric intermediates and be mediated by the amine released from protonolysis, thereby forming the corresponding imine as a byproduct. Isolated amine complexes of vanadium(III) are presented. In contrast, bis(amidate)vanadium(IV) complexes were not found to undergo a similar reduction. This work informs on design principles for the synthesis and application of new vanadium pyridonate catalysts for transformations involving dimerization and PCET for changes in oxidation state.

Abstract

Reaction of the dimers [(Cp*MCl)2(μ-Cl)2] (Cp* = η5-C5Me5)
with Ph2PCH2CH2NC(NH(p-Tolyl))2 (H2L) in the presence
of NaSbF6 affords the chlorido complexes [Cp*MCl(κ2N,P-H2L)][SbF6] (M = Rh, 1; Ir, 2).
Upon treatment with aqueous NaOH, solutions of 1 and 2 yield the corresponding complexes [Cp*M(κ3N,N′,P-HL)][SbF6] (M = Rh, 3; Ir, 4) in which the ligand HL presents a fac κ3N,N′,P coordination mode. Treatment of THF solutions
of complexes 3 and 4 with hydrogen gas,
at room temperature, results in the formation of the metal hydrido-complexes
[Cp*MH(κ2N,P-H2L)][SbF6] (M = Rh, 5;
Ir, 6) in which the N(p-Tolyl) group
has been protonated. Complexes 3 and 4 react
with deuterated water in a reversible fashion resulting in the gradual
deuteration of the Cp* group. Heating at 383 K THF/H2O
solutions of the complexes 3 and 4 affords
the orthometalated complexes [Cp*M(κ3C,N,P-H2L-H)][SbF6] [M = Rh, 7; Ir, 8, H2L-H = Ph2PCH2CH2NC(NH(p-Tolyl))(NH(4-C6H3Me))], respectively. At 333 K, complexes 3 and 4 react in THF with methanol, primary alcohols,
or 2-propanol giving the metal-hydrido complexes 5 and 6, respectively. The reaction involves the acceptorless dehydrogenation
of the alcohols at a relatively low temperature, without the assistance
of an external base. The new complexes have been characterized by
the usual analytical and spectroscopic methods including the X-ray
diffraction determination of the crystal structures of complexes 1–5, 7, and 8. Notably, the chlorido complexes 1 and 2 crystallize both as enantiopure conglomerates and as racemates.
Reaction mechanisms are proposed based on stoichiometric reactions,
nuclear magnetic resonance studies, and X-ray crystallography as well
as density functional theory calculations. In solution, masked transition-metal
frustrated Lewis pairs
(TMFLPs) give rise to the corresponding TMFLP species which activate
dihydrogen, water, and alcohols following FLP reaction pathways. When
D2O or alcohols with deuterated OH groups were employed,
H/D exchange at the Cp* ligand (involving C(sp3)−H
activation) was observed. C(sp2)−H bond activation
involving orthometalation of the p-Tolyl ring was
also observed.

Abstract
We disclosed a regio-selective C-H and N-H bond functionalization of indolines using alcohols in water via tandem dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles and alcohols. A diverse range of N- and C3-alkylated indolines/indoles were accessed utilizing a new cooperative iridium catalyst. The practical applicability of this methodology was demonstrated by the preparative-scale synthesis and synthesis of a psychoactive drug, N,N-dimethyltryptamine. A catalytic cycle is proposed based on several kinetic experiments, series of control experiments and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
Computational methods have emerged as a powerful tool to augment traditional experimental molecular catalyst design by providing useful predictions of catalyst performance and decreasing the time needed for catalyst screening. In this perspective, we discuss three approaches for computational molecular catalyst design: (i) the reaction mechanism-based approach that calculates all relevant elementary steps, finds the rate and selectivity determining steps, and ultimately makes predictions on catalyst performance based on kinetic analysis, (ii) the descriptor-based approach where physical/chemical considerations are used to find molecular properties as predictors of catalyst performance, and (iii) the data-driven approach where statistical analysis as well as machine learning (ML) methods are used to obtain relationships between available data/features and catalyst performance. Following an introduction to these approaches, we cover their strengths and weaknesses and highlight some recent key applications. Furthermore, we present an outlook on how the currently applied approaches may evolve in the near future by addressing how recent developments in building automated computational workflows and implementing advanced ML models hold promise for reducing human workload, eliminating human bias, and speeding up computational catalyst design at the same time. Finally, we provide our viewpoint on how some of the challenges associated with the up-and-coming approaches driven by automation and ML may be resolved.

Abstract
The detailed formation mechanisms of C-ribonucleoside and N-ribonucleoside via the reaction of 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP) with (d)-ribose in aqueous solution were explored using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations indicate that five isomers (α,β-furanose, α,β-pyranose and open-chain aldehyde) of (d)-ribose can exist in equilibrium in aqueous solution. In contrast to cyclic isomers, an open-chain aldehyde is most feasible to react with TAP. In general, the formation pathways of C-nucleoside and N-nucleoside proceed in three steps including nucleophilic addition, dehydration and cyclization. The calculated apparent activation energies are 28.8 kcal mol-1 and 29.2 kcal mol-1, respectively. It suggests that both C- and N-nucleoside can be formed in aqueous solution, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. The water molecule plays an important "H-bridge" role by the hydrogen atom relay. Finally, a model structure of nucleobase, which will be beneficial for the C-C glycosidic bond formation, is proposed.

Abstract
The mechanism of the Morita Baylis-Hillman reaction has been heavily studied in the literature, and a long series of computational studies have defined complete theoretical energy profiles in these reactions. We employ here a combination of mechanistic probes, including the observation of intermediates, the independent generation and partitioning of intermediates, thermodynamic and kinetic measurements on the main reaction and side reactions, isotopic incorporation from solvent, and kinetic isotope effects, to define the mechanism and an experimental mechanistic free-energy profile for a prototypical Morita Baylis-Hillman reaction in methanol. The results are then used to critically evaluate the ability of computations to predict the mechanism. The most notable prediction of the many computational studies, that of a proton-shuttle pathway, is refuted in favor of a simple but computationally intractable acid-base mechanism. Computational predictions vary vastly, and it is not clear that any significant accurate information that was not already apparent from experiment could have been garnered from computations. With care, entropy calculations are only a minor contributor to the larger computational error, while literature entropy-correction processes lead to absurd free-energy predictions. The computations aid in interpreting observations but fail utterly as a replacement for experiment.

Abstract
The catalysis of acceptorless alcohol dehydrogenation (AAD) is an important area of research. Transition metal-based systems are known to be effective catalysts for this reaction, but developing metal free catalytic systems would lead to highly desirable cheaper and greener alternatives. With this in mind, this computational study investigates design strategies than can lead to metal free frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) that can be employed for AAD catalysis. A careful study of 36 different proposed FLP candidates reveals that several new FLPs can be designed from existing, experimentally synthesized FLPs that can rival or be even better than state-of-the-art transition metal-based systems in catalyzing the alcohol dehydrogenation process.
