Abstract
Serendipitous discovery of bida (i.e., N1-Ar-N2-((1-Ar-1-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methyl)benzene-1,2-diamide; Ar = 2,6-iPr-C6H3), a potentially redox noninnocent, hemilabile pincer ligand with a methylene group that may facilitate proton/H atom reactivity, prompted its investigation. Chromium was chosen for study due to its multiple stable oxidation states. Disodium salt (bida)Na2(THF)n was prepared by thermal rearrangement of (dadi)Na2(THF)4 (i.e., (N,N'-di-2-(2,6-diisopropylphenylamine)phenylglyoxaldiimine)-Na2(THF)4). Salt metathesis of (bida)Na2(THF)n (generated in situ) with CrCl3(THF)3 or Cl3V═NAr (Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) afforded (bida)CrCl(THF) (1-THF) and (bida)ClV═NAr, respectively. Substitutions provided (bida)CrCl(PMe2Ph) (1-PMe2Ph) and (bida)CrR(THF) (2-R, where R = Me, CH2CMe2Ph (Nph)). Oxidation of 1-THF with ArN3 (Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) or AdN3 (Ad = 1-adamantyl) generated (bida)ClCr═NAr (3═NAr) and (bida)ClCr═NAd (3═NAd) and subsequent alkylation converted these to (bida)R'Cr═NR (R' = Me, R = Ad, Ar, 5═NR; R' = CH2CMe2Ph (Nph), R = Ad, Ar, 6═NR). In contrast, the addition of AdN3 to 2-Nph gave the insertion product (bida)Cr(κ2-N,N-ArN3Nph) (7). Addition of N-chlorosuccinimide to 1-THF produced (bia)CrCl2(THF) (8), where bia is the pincer derived via hydrogen atom loss from bida methylene. A similar HAT afforded (bia)ClCr(CNAr')2 (9, Ar' = 2,6-Me2C6H3) when 3═NAd was exposed to Ar'NC. An empirical equation of charge was applied to each bida species, whose metric parameters are unchanging despite formal oxidation state conversions from Cr(III) to Cr(V). Calculations and Mulliken spin density assessments reveal several situations in which antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling and admixtures of integer ground states (GSs) describe a complicated electronic structure.

Abstract
The reaction of TaMe3 Cl2 with the rigid acridane-derived trisamine H3 NNN yields the tantalum(V) complex [TaCl2 (NNNcat )]. Subsequent reaction with dioxygen results in the full four-electron reduction of O2 yielding the oxido-bridged bimetallic complex [{TaCl2 (NNNsq )}2 O]. This dinuclear complex features an open-shell ground state due to partial ligand oxidation and was comprehensively characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, LIFDI mass spectrometry, NMR, EPR, IR and UV/VIS/NIR spectroscopy. The mechanism of O2 activation was investigated by DFT calculations revealing initial binding of O2 to the tantalum(V) center followed by complete O2 scission to produce a terminal oxido-complex.

Abstract
Low-valent early transition metals are often intrinsically highly reactive as a result of their strong propensity toward oxidation to more stable high-valent states. Harnessing these highly reducing complexes for productive reactivity is potentially powerful for C-C bond construction, organic reductions, small-molecule activation and many other reactions that offer orthogonal chemoselectivity and/or regioselectivity patterns to processes promoted by late transition metals. Recent years have seen many exciting new applications of low-valent metals through building new catalytic and/or multicomponent reaction manifolds out of classical reactivity patterns. In this Review, we survey new methods that employ early transition metals and invoke low-valent precursors or intermediates in order to identify common themes and strategies in synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
The synthesis and redox reactivity of pentacoordinate phosphorus compounds incorporating a redox-active ONO amidodiphenoxide scaffold [ONO = N,N-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-phenoxide)amide] are described. Dichloro- and diphenylphosphoranes, 2·Cl2 and 2·Ph2, respectively, are synthesized and crystallographically characterized. Cyclic voltammograms of 2·Cl2 show only a single irreversible oxidation (Epa = +0.83 V vs Cp2Fe0/+), while the diphenyl analogue 2·Ph2 is reversibly oxidized at lower applied potential (E1/2 = +0.47 V vs Cp2Fe0/+). Chemical oxidation of 2·Ph2 with AgBF4 produces the corresponding radical cation [2·Ph2]•+, where electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal that the unpaired spin density is largely ligand-based and is highly delocalized throughout the ONO framework of the paramagnetic species. The solid-state structures indicate only minor geometrical changes between the neutral 2·Ph2 and oxidized [2·Ph2]•+ species, consistent with fast self-exchange electron transfer, as observed by NMR line-broadening experiments.

Abstract
A d0 niobium(V) complex, NbCl3(α-diimine) (1a), supported by a dianionic redox-active N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene (α-diimine) ligand (ene-diamido ligand) served as a catalyst for radical addition reactions of CCl4 to α-olefins and cyclic alkenes, selectively affording 1:1 radical addition products in a regioselective manner. During the catalytic reaction, the α-diimine ligand smoothly released and stored an electron to control the oxidation state of the niobium center by changing between an η4-(σ2,π) coordination mode with a folded MN2C2 metallacycle and a κ2-(N,N') coordination mode with a planar MN2C2 metallacycle. Kinetic studies of the catalytic reaction elucidated the reaction order in the catalytic cycle: the radical addition reaction rate obeyed first-order kinetics that were dependent on the concentrations of the catalyst, styrene, and CCl4, while a saturation effect was observed at a high CCl4 concentration. In the presence of excess amounts of styrene, styrene coordinated in an η2-olefinic manner to the niobium center to decrease the reaction rate. No observation of oligomers or polymers of styrene and high stereoselectivity for the radical addition reaction of CCl4 to cyclopentene suggested that the C-C bond formation proceeded inside the coordination sphere of niobium, which was in good accordance with the negative entropy value of the radical addition reaction. Furthermore, reaction of 1a with (bromomethyl)cyclopropane confirmed that both the C-Br bond activation and formation proceeded on the α-diimine-coordinated niobium center during transformation of the cyclopropylmethyl radical to a homoallyl radical. With regard to the reaction mechanism, we detected and isolated NbCl4(α-diimine) (6a) as a transient one-electron oxidized species of 1a during reductive cleavage of the C-X bonds; in addition, the monoanionic α-diimine ligand of 6a adopted a monoanionic canonical form with selective one-electron oxidation of the dianionic ene-diamido form of the ligand in 1a.

Abstract
Redox-active ligands have evolved from being considered spectroscopic curiosities - creating ambiguity about formal oxidation states in metal complexes - to versatile and useful tools to expand on the reactivity of (transition) metals or to even go beyond what is generally perceived possible. This review focusses on metal complexes containing either catechol, o-aminophenol or o-phenylenediamine type ligands. These ligands have opened up a new area of chemistry for metals across the periodic table. The portfolio of ligand-based reactivity invoked by these redox-active entities will be discussed. This ranges from facilitating oxidative additions upon d(0) metals or cross coupling reactions with cobalt(iii) without metal oxidation state changes - by functioning as an electron reservoir - to intramolecular ligand-to-substrate single-electron transfer to create a reactive substrate-centered radical on a Pd(ii) platform. Although the current state-of-art research primarily consists of stoichiometric and exploratory reactions, several notable reports of catalysis facilitated by the redox-activity of the ligand will also be discussed. In conclusion, redox-active ligands containing catechol, o-aminophenol or o-phenylenediamine moieties show great potential to be exploited as reversible electron reservoirs, donating or accepting electrons to activate substrates and metal centers and to enable new reactivity with both early and late transition as well as main group metals.

Abstract
The remarkable chemistry of mononuclear complexes featuring tridentate, meridionally chelating "pincer" ligands has stimulated the development of ligand frameworks containing multiple pincer sites. Here, the coordination chemistry of a novel pentadentate ligand (L(N3O2)) that provides two closely spaced NNO pincer-type compartments fused together at a central diarylamido unit is described. The trianionic L(N3O2) chelate supports homobimetallic structures in which each M(II) ion (M = Co, Cu, Zn) is bound in a meridional fashion by the bridging diarylamido N atom and O,N-donors of the salicyaldimine arms. The metal centers are also coordinated by a mono- or bidentate auxiliary ligand (L(aux)), resulting in complexes with the general form [M2(L(N3O2))(L(aux))2](+) (where L(aux) = 1-methyl-benzimidazole (1MeBI), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 4,4'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy(Br2)), or (S)-2-(4-isopropyl-4,5-dihydrooxazolyl)pyridine (S-(iPr)OxPy)). The fused nature of the NNO pincer sites results in short metal-metal distances ranging from 2.70 Å for [Co2(L(N3O2)) (bpy)2](+) to 3.28 Å for [Zn2(L(N3O2)) (bpy)2](+), as revealed by X-ray crystallography. The complexes possess C2 symmetry due to the twisting of the aryl rings of the μ-NAr2 core; spectroscopic studies indicate that chiral L(aux) ligands, such as S-(iPr)OxPy, are capable of controlling the helical sense of the L(N3O2) scaffold. Since the four- or five-coordinate M(II) centers are linked solely by the amido moiety, each features an open coordination site in the intermetallic region, allowing for the possibility of metal-metal cooperativity in small-molecule activation. Indeed, the dicobalt(II) complex [Co2(L(N3O2)) (bpy(Br2))2](+) reacts with O2 to yield a dicobalt(III) species with a μ-1,2-peroxo ligand. The bpy-containing complexes exhibit rich electrochemical properties due to multiple metal- and ligand-based redox events across a wide (3.0 V) potential window. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT), it was determined that one-electron oxidation of [Co2(L(N3O2)) (bpy)2](+) results in formation of a S = 1/2 species with a L(N3O2)-based radical coupled to low-spin Co(II) centers.

Abstract
A series of alkali metal cerium diphenylhydrazido complexes, M x (py) y [Ce(PhNNPh)4], M = Li, Na, and K, x = 4 (Li and Na) or 5 (K), and y = 4 (Li), 8 (Na), or 7 (K), were synthesized to probe how a secondary coordination sphere would modulate electronic structures at a cerium cation. The resulting electronic structures of the heterobimetallic cerium diphenylhydrazido complexes were found to be strongly dependent on the identity of the alkali metal cations. When M = Li+ or Na+, the cerium(iii) starting material was oxidized with concomitant reduction of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine to aniline. Reduction of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine was not observed when M = K+, and the complex remained in the cerium(iii) oxidation state. Oxidation of the cerium(iii) diphenylhydrazido complex to the Ce(iv) diphenylhydrazido one was achieved through a simple cation exchange reaction of the alkali metals. UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, and DFT studies were used to probe the oxidation state and the electronic changes that occurred at the metal centre.

Abstract
Iron(III) complexes of the tris(pyrrolide)ethane trianion have been synthesized by reaction of one- and two-electron oxidants with [(tpe)Fe(THF)][Li(THF)4] (tpe = tris(5-mesitylpyrrolyl)ethane). X-ray crystallography, (57)Fe Mössbauer, (1)H NMR and EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and density functional theory calculations were employed to rigorously establish the iron 3+ oxidation state. All oxidants employed are proposed to operate via an inner-sphere electron transfer mechanism. Dialkyl peroxides and dibenzyldisulfide served to oxidize iron by one electron, and group transfer of an aryl nitrene unit to the Fe(2+) starting material resulted in formation of Fe(3+) amido species following H-atom abstraction by a presumed nitrenoid intermediate. Single electron transfer to and from diphenyldiazoalkane was also observed to yield a diphenyldiazomethanyl radical anion antiferromagnetically coupled to the S = 5/2 Fe(3+). Isolation of Fe(3+) complexes of tpe, in comparison with previous results wherein the tpe ligand was the redox active moiety, presents an unusual juxtaposition of two noncommunicating redox reservoirs, each accessible via different reaction pathways (namely, inner- and outer-sphere electron transfer).
