Abstract
Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have received increasing attention for offering a distinctive pathway for the activation and conversion of small molecules. Here, we employ density functional calculations to investigate the electronic and steric effects of FLPs and alkynes on the activity toward alkyne semihydrogenation, a crucial reaction in the production of pharmaceuticals and polymers. We investigated the steric effect of FLPs by replacing the LA-LB linker (d) of the model catalyst FLP, 1-NMe2-2-B(C6F5)2-C6H4 (d1), with various linkers. Additionally, we studied the steric effect of alkynes by varying the substrate from acetylene to but-2-yne, hex-3-yne, 2,5-dimethylhex-3-yne, 2,2,5,5-tetramethylhex-3-yne, and 1,2-diphenylethyne. Our computational results suggest that the overall activity of alkyne and alkene hydrogenation is influenced by both electronic and steric effects when using FLPs with varied LA-LB linkers. To achieve better activity, one could increase the steric hindrance of the LA neighboring environment and reduce the electron density of the LB site of FLPs. Structure-activity relationships for each elementary step involving alkyne semihydrogenation were identified in this work too. In contrast, when the reaction is catalyzed by the same FLP, the activity is solely governed by the steric hindrance of the alkynes. The overall activity exhibits a volcano-shaped trend as a function of the buried volume of the alkynes. FLP (d1) shows the highest activity toward hex-3-yne, as predicted by the volcano correlation, while it exhibits lower activity toward alkynes with either less or greater steric hindrance compared to hex-3-yne.

Abstract
1-Boryl-8-phosphinonaphthalenes 1-BCy2-8-PCl2-C10H6 (1) and 1-BCy2-8-PPhCl-C10H6 (2) were prepared and used as starting materials for the synthesis of B-substituted phosphides. The reduction of 1 and 2 by Mg provided neutral compounds [1-BCy-8-PCy-C10H6]2 (3) and [1-BCy2-8-PPh-C10H6]2 (4). Compound 3 represents the dimer of phosphinoborane 1-BCy-8-PCy-C10H6 while complex 4 is a rare example of a discrete B ← P coordinated diphosphine. The reduction of 2 by Na or K in THF yielded B-substituted group 1 phosphides [Na(THF)3]+[1-BCy2-8-PPh-C10H6]- (5) and {[K(THF)2]+[1-BCy2-8-PPh-C10H6]-}∞ (6), which structurally resembled bulky group 1 phosphides. Complex 5 showed easy activation of elemental chalcogens E (E = O, S, Se) to give B-substituted chalcogenophosphinites {[Na(THF)2]+[1-BCy2-8-P(E)Ph-C10H6]}2 (E = O (7), S (8), Se (9)) as the products of chalcogen insertion into the P-Na bond. Importantly no oxidation to dichalcogenophosphinates was observed. Compound 5 is tolerant of the CO polar bonds in organic substrates and the reactions of 5 with 2,3-butanedione or an acyl chloride provided {[Na(THF)2]+[1-BCy2-8-P{CHC(O)C(Me)O}Ph-C10H6]-}2 (10) and [1-BCy2-8-P{C(O)tBu}Ph-C10H6] (11). Finally, B-coordinated phosphatetrylenes [1-BCy2-8-P(SnL)Ph-C10H6] (12) and [1-BCy2-8-P(PbL)Ph-C10H6] (13) (L is {2,6-(Me2NCH2)C6H3}-) were also prepared by substitution reactions of 5.

Abstract
We describe a novel gold chloride complex supported by an ambiphilic phosphine/xanthylium ligand in which the AuCl moiety interacts with the π+ surface of the xanthylium unit as indicated by structural studies. Energy decomposition analyses carried out on a model system indicates the prevalence of non-covalent interactions in which the electrostatic and dispersion terms cumulatively dominate. The presence of these AuCl-π+ interactions correlates with the high catalytic activity of this complex in the cyclisation of 2-(phenylethynyl)phenylboronic acid, N-propargyl-t-butylamide, and 2-allyl-2-(2-propynyl)malonate. Comparison with the significantly less active acridinium and the 9-oxa-10-boraanthracene analogues reinforces this conclusion.

Abstract
Spectacular progress has recently been achieved in transition metal-catalyzed C-H borylation of phosphines as well as directed electrophilic C-H borylation. As shown here, P-directed electrophilic borylation provides a new, straightforward, and efficient access to phosphine-boranes. It operates under metal-free conditions and leverages simple, readily available substrates. It is applicable to a broad range of backbones (naphthyl, biphenyl, N-phenylpyrrole, binaphthyl, benzyl, naphthylmethyl) and gives facile access to various substitution patterns at boron (by varying the boron electrophile or post-derivatizing the borane moiety). NMR monitoring supports the involvement of P-stabilized borenium cations as key intermediates. DFT calculations reveal the existence and stabilizing effect of π-arene/boron interactions in the (biphenyl)(i-Pr)2 P→BBr2 + species.

Abstract
The review covers the chemistry of organoboron heterocycles structurally related to benzoxaboroles where one of the carbon atoms in a boracycle or a fused benzene ring is replaced by a heteroelement such as boron, silicon, tin, nitrogen, phosphorus, or iodine. Related ring expanded systems including those based on naphthalene and biphenyl cores are also described. The information on synthetic methodology as well as the basic structural and physicochemical characteristics of these emerging heterocycles is complemented by a presentation of their potential applications in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, the latter aspect being mostly focused on the promising antimicrobial activity of selected compounds.

Abstract
Triphenylphosphine (TPP)-based luminescent compounds are rarely investigated because of the low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Here, we demonstrate that introducing steric hindrance groups to the TPP moiety and separating the orbitals involved in the transition can drastically suppress the non-radiative decay induced by structural distortion of TPP in the excited state. High PLQY up to 0.89 as well as thermally activated delayed fluorescence are observed from the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) molecules with substituted TPP donors (sTPPs) in doped films. The red organic light-emitting diodes employing these emitters achieve comparable external quantum efficiencies to the control device containing a classical phosphorescent dye, revealing the great potential of the ICT emitters based on electrochemically stable sTPPs.

Abstract
The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of mixed group 13/group 15 compounds (E13 = B, Al, Ga, In, Tl; E15 = N, P, Sb, Bi) featuring a rigid (ace)naphthalene or (thio)xanthene backbone are discussed in this review. The backbone may either enforce or prevent E15→E13 interactions, resulting in Lewis pairing or frustration. The formation of strong E15→E13 interactions is possible upon peri-substitution of (ace)naphthalenes. This gives the opportunity to access and study highly reactive species, as exemplified by P-stabilised borenium salts and boryl radicals. In turn, rigid expanded spacers such as biphenylenes, (thio)xanthenes and dibenzofurans impose long distances and geometrically prevent E15→E13 interactions. Such P-B derivatives display ambiphilic coordination properties and frustrated Lewis pair behaviour towards small molecules, their preorganised structure favouring reversible interaction/activation. Throughout the review, the importance of the scaffold in enforcing or preventing E15→E13 interactions is highlighted and discussed based on experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Abstract
Diazaborinylphosphines based on the 1,8-diaminonaphthylboronamide heterocycle are prepared by a chlorosilane-elimination reaction, and their structural and bonding properties are compared to those of PPh3. The precursor chloroborane ClB{1,8-(NH)2C10H6} (I) is fully characterized including its crystal structure, which features intermolecular π-π stacking, B···N interactions, and N-H···Cl hydrogen bonding. Treatment of I with Ph3-nP(SiMe3)n gave the corresponding Ph3-nP(B{1,8-(NH)2C10H6})n, {L1 (n = 1), L2 (n = 2), and L3 (n = 3)}. The crystal structures of L1-3 reveal an increase in the planarity at P as a function of n, and the steric bulk of the diazaborinyl substituent B{1,8-(NH)2C10H6} is similar to that of a phenyl. Nucleus-independent chemical shift calculations were carried out that suggest that the 14 π-electron diazaborinyl substituent can be described as aromatic overall, though the BN2-containing ring is slightly antiaromatic. The complexes cis-[Mo(L1-3)2(CO)4] (1-3) are prepared from [Mo(nbd)(CO)4] (nbd = norbornadiene) and L1-3. From the position of the ν(CO) (A1) band in the IR spectra of 1-3, it is deduced that the diazaborinyl substituent has a donating capacity similar to an alkyl group.

Abstract
The synthesis and molecular structures of 1-(diphenylphosphino)-8-naphthyldimesitylborane (1) and 5-(diphenylphosphino)-6-acenaphthyldimesitylborane (2) are reported. The experimentally determined P-B peri distances of 2.162(2) and 3.050(3) Å allow 1 and 2 to be classified as regular and frustrated Lewis pairs. The electronic characteristics of the (non)bonding P-B contacts are determined by analysis of a set of real-space bonding indicators (RSBIs) derived from the theoretically calculated electron and pair densities. These densities are analyzed utilizing the atoms-in-molecules (AIM), stockholder, and electron-localizability-indicator (ELI-D) space partitioning schemes. The recently introduced mapping of the electron localizability on the ELI-D basin surfaces is also applied. All RSBIs clearly discriminate the bonding P-B contact in 1 from the nonbonding P-B contact in 2, which is due to the fact that the acenaphthene framework is rather rigid, whereas the naphthyl framework shows sufficient conformational flexibility, allowing shorter peri interations. The results are compared to the previously known prototypical phosphinoborane Ph3PB(C6F5)3, which serves as a reference for a bonding P-B interaction. The most prominent features of the nonbonding P-B contact in 2 are the lack of an AIM bond critical point, the unaffected Hirshfeld surfaces of the P and B atomic fragments, and the negligible penetration of the electron population of the ELI-D lone pair basin of the P atom into the AIM B atomic basin.
